Since 1970 I've listened to the Carpenter's. I'm 69 now and sometimes I just want to hear Karen's voice and nothing else. Her voice had a way to draw you in. There have been good female singers but have felt none like Karen's. Oh the dance party's we had dancing to the Carpenter's. Especially with my lady friend. Wow the memories. Thank you Richard and Karen for being a part of my younger years.
Me too! Karen is the only voice I can listen to for an entire day.I usually need to change the music or stop listening to music after 2-3 hours with any singer.Karen's voice is so melodic.
That looks like Ronnie Tutt (Elvis) on the drums, and he sure looks impressed to be a part of this great music they were making that day. It just sounds so wonderful!
I have been a lifelong Carpenter fan but somehow never heard this one until 1993 at a country dance bar. I melted at the beauty of it and more so even now as so many memories are carried along within it.
Here, I would say it was "Country." This where she shoulda put her efforts on her Solo Album. It would've faired much better since she was already THERE.
She had an insanely beautiful voice that has inspired me to sing since I was a child. So sad that she passed so young. There was still so much inside her to share with the world.
This is certainly one of my FAVORITE songs by the Carpenters: the story in the lyrics, her gorgeous voice, back-up vocals, and the orchestration. All this combined makes this song incredibly melodious and magical!!!
Bless her as she was in the battle of her life with that dastardly anorexia nervosa... I sat there in my office in west Fort Worth and cried the day she died. I had to close the door to my office. She made millions happy with her & Richard's songs.
@@Coupydog yes. Richard said in an interview that in her very first attempts at singing she sounded a little country. Disco is easy which is why so many singers do it. Karen could handle any genre and was especially good at jazz based music.
@@Coupydog Great suggestion! But when when Richard went into rehab (by using Quaaludes to get to sleep, too much obligations, creations and things spinning into his head), Karen became idle. And went to New York, where therapist Steve Levenkrom was based. I guess Karen went disco because she was in NY. If she was in Nashville, certainly country would be her choice. In NY her environment was not appropriate. But anyway country or disco would difficult choices to bear. In the late 70's, country's successful acts were making crossovers to pop or were in related genres (country rock, etc.). Could Karen do a solo project going from pop to country? Maybe, but certainly better than disco, because in 1979 disco was overexposed, overlistened, over, over... nearing its backlash. So I believe that, if Karen's solo album was released and not shelved, it could open a space in the post-disco scene, because the songs already were post-disco, they were not too lush in orchestration, sounded rightly matched to its time. A country solo album could fare better, but it was not made, because it was not decided for. Did Phil Ramone produce a country album? Well, thank you for the comnent, it allowed me to go very far...
As someone who's only listened to country music all of my life, until three years ago, when I discovered the Carpenters, I sadly have to agree. Country just isn't the same. They're wonderful. No boundaries
Karen captured, like no one else, how you snatch illness, depression and despair from the ashes with the magic of her voice. Listen carefully; she captures the best that life has to offer.
When you consider the incredible dysfunction and pain in her life, she was still 100% devoted to the song and the spirit it embodied. This is why I love Karen even more now than when she was with us.
She had a talent and skill, and somehow she had it perfectly honed by the green age of 19, that are important to any high profile singer...she was a great actress.

One of their best songs ever. The harmonies / vocals in the chorus are beautiful. A "forgotten" gem. Richards arrangement is outstanding and Karens voice, as always, stellar...
I took the pilgrimage to Downey CA last weekend to just sit at the curb and absorb the memories of the Carpenter family that lived in the “Now and Then” house. Tho the yard is a disgraceful mess now, the home is still standing. I talked to a neighbor who knew the parents 30 years ago. I’ve been a huge fan for over 50 years and being there really got to me.

I am a classically-trained singer. I know more music history than can fit in my head. I have sung Verdi, G&S, and Sondheim, but I love this song as much as I love Schubert's "An die Musik", and it makes me cry with joy just as much.
I’m a classically trained piano accompanist who has worked mostly with singers. Opera, operetta, musical theatre, popular.. Schubert was where my formal training as an accompanist at uni began and holds a special place in my heart. I’ve worked with greats. And to my ear, Karen Carpenter’s voice is perfection. She was a one off.

After he passed I could not bring myself to hear it for a while, but now it's OK. Karen, I hope you have now met my Dad, as he knows how much I loved you growing up.

one of my favorite songs by The Carpenters!!! Karen is the best. We lost her too early in life and she is and always will be. . . . "A Star On Earth, A Star In Heaven"!!! The Carpenters music will always be loved by this devoted fan!!!
I am incredibly blessed that my intro to English pop music at age 9 was via Karen's songs in cassettes...that freed me up to listen to everyone like pink floyd, g&r, black sabbath, queen, sinatra, dylan, coltrane, kenny g.... Thats what clarity of music, melody and vocal performance builds in to you.. peace and love from Assam, India..
Oh, my......this is how TRUE MUSIC DEFINES ! it just replenishes your freshness unnoticed when you listen especially by a divine-quality voice as Karen !

As a child I was known for make-believing
All alone I created fantasies
As I grew people called it self-deceiving
But my heart helped me hold the memories
As I walk through the world I find around me
Something new yet familiar's in the air
I feel it everywhere like a child's eyes on a Christmas night
I'm lookin' at you now, finding answers to my prayers
It's a new day for those good old dreams
One by one it seems they're comin' true
Here's the morning that my heart had seen
Here's the morning that just had to come through
Same old stage but what a change of scene
No more dark horizons, only blue
It's a new day for those good old dreams
All my life I dreamed of lovin' you
You're a spark of a long forgotten fire
You're a touch of a slowly growing wind
You're a taste of the ever-changing seasons
Telling me there are some things that don't end
We have left all the darkness far behind us
All those hopes that we held along the way
Have made it to this day, like an old love song gone for much too long
You hear it once again and it carries you away
It's a new day for those good old dreams
One by one it seems they're comin' true
Here's the morning that my heart had seen
Here's the morning that just had to come through
Same old stage but what a change of scene
No more dark horizons, only blue
It's a new day for those good old dreams

This is by far the best and uplifting song The Carpenters ever recorded - it gets even better as the years pass.
Karen and Richard is a great inspiration in creating great music
I am incredibly blessed that my intro to English pop music at age 9 was via Karen's songs in cassettes...that freed me up to listen to everyone like pink floyd, g&r, black sabbath, queen, sinatra, dylan, coltrane, kenny g.... Thats what clarity of music, melody and vocal performance builds in to you.. peace and love from Assam, India..
Oh, my......this is how TRUE MUSIC DEFINES ! it just replenishes your freshness unnoticed when you listen especially by a divine-quality voice as Karen !
The carpenters make the best in every kind of music...
What a great song....especially in these times. Timeless.
She stand there, pure and simple.
Full of love and so warm and soft in her aura.
Who will ever be like her.
Nobody!!
Karen forever!
