  • Comic books retailer Rod Lamberti sounds nearly inconsolable over the state of the comic industry in 2023. Wes breaks down what the owner of Rodman Comics had to say about the numerous missteps from DC and Marvel that got the industry to this state. From gimmick marketing, to devaluing characters, to Bendis' run at DC Comics. LCS owner inconsolable over the state of comic books.

    FACTS!

I used to work at a comic shop in Sacramento called "Comics and Collectibles." My boss had a few other comic book owner friends and when things started to dip many of them became bitter. I can only imagine how much that bitterness has festered. Especially when you consider, so many factors are out of the comic shop owners control. IT SUCKS.

Yea it’s terrible for these shop owners just watching on as Marvel/DC continue to crash their industry and make sure they get no money.

The sad thing is that every first appearance issue of fly by night characters will indeed be worth $45 in a couple decades but not because of popularity. With the rates of inflation over the past couple of years, the new comic shop discount bin will be the $50.00 box instead of the $1.00 box.

"Marvel comics is not bigger than Spider-Man, Spider-Man is bigger than Marvel comics" Sooooo true!!!

  • @shotsavereboundscore

I've stopped at his shop quite a bit. He's a nice guy

There was a Time, black in the eighties, when comics reached the level of literature. Now, they can't even be consideres trash, they aré beneath thrash, unreadable AND most of the Time, unwatchable.Ive been reading comics since the Sixties AND I've experiences this decline. I also think it's over AND there's nothing else that can be done.

I do feel some sympathy for LCS owners, but they helped make this bed and they can now lie in it. LCS owners are not innocent in this sh*t show. How many years did LCS allow Diamond and publishers to push predatory practices on them? How many years of dwindling readers did they see and shrug off? They all had the power to say something; oh, wait, some did try and point out the troubling signs and they were shamed by the bigger stores.

This is not a hobby, this is a business. Seen too many folks like Mr. Rodman over the decades, not just in comics. Watched my father's circle of Stamp Stores and my circle of Sports Memorabilia dealers go through the same death spirals. At this point, Mr. Rodman works out of his house, or he gets 'bottle return money' and gets a one time tax write off. 😢

    Rod's a solid citizen.

It's a pretty bad deal for current comic shop owners. They were hit bad by Covid and shutdowns and with the comics getting worse and more expensive it's lucky that any of them are able to stay open. The really good days of the mid 1980s-late 1980s for comic shops were a while ago and I still remember them well (10 comics for $5.00, sometimes more depending on the sales that were going on) - and if any of my old Berkeley comic shop haunts are still open the next time I come around I will make a visit and buy something.

The N52 was the worst idea that DC have in your entire history and destroyed your universe forever.Until tthis present day the DCU never recovered in full of the N52 damage. There 's no more a continuity in DC anymore.Everything is a huge mess. I don't believe that a new reboot can fix DC again. The latest Captain America run was a huge letdown,Bucky goes rogue and was easily forgived by Steve in the end.Crap stuff.

  • @DonMegaPLP

You should do a writer tier list.

  • @RollingDodge

I want to know what happened with Rebirth? I mean why did DC just let it go all to waste, instead of building on momentum they wasted all their potential for what? Also the All New, All Different, made no sense either.

  • @ascorvinus

Wes, you moved to the Philippines. You gotta show more loyalty to your adopted home. Darna is the best superhero!

  • @jbbrolic

You are in a horrible place if Jed McKay or Joshua Williamson are the headliners.

  • @hankscorpion9939

I think at this point, maybe DC and Marvel actually need to change things up and offer a few different things

  • @kdott9476

The only big 2 comic I’m reading is the Mark Bagley Spider-Man.

  • @gregorychiasson7739

Nothing like seemingly intentionally destroying your own business Marvel DC

When I tried to address some of these issues, way back in 2019, my FLCS owner openly scoffed, and mocked me. I took my business to a further shop, which made him pussed off at me so much he tried to get them to ban me. Now, his shop is a chain CBD store.
