    Waveform is becoming a real gem of a DAW, very understated in the community. It's hard to believe the free version is so fully featured.

    Looking into this Daw right now. Like the interface and seems very cool. Only thing i'm missing: There is no sound when dragging notes up or down using the keyboard shortcuts. (Like in Cubase & Reaper). Some setting i've missed? The mouse works fine.

      Hmm, I’m not sure about that. I’ll have to check it tomorrow but I’m pretty sure it should make a sound. There’s a little speaker button on the left that you might need to toggle on.

      @@tracktionwaveformtips I have only recorded in well equipped studios so I was apprehensive about the various DAWs I might get to know and I didn't want "too much personality" to take on like with Cakewalk of FL studio.. I settled with Studio One and I have had more successes than I had with Cakewalk, or my friends ver of Pro Tools and esp. Cubase.. I do like Reason but Studio One was available so I am pleased thus far.. and thank you for your stimulating instruction.. any suggestions or comments about Studio One?

      Thanks Jaye, glad you’re enjoying my videos. Studio One seems to be a great DAW too, and quite popular. I haven’t personally used it yet myself but I’ve been curious about it for a while now. It’s got some of the fancy look of Logic Pro and the included plugins look decent. I’ll try it eventually. Recently I’ve been in a regular flow of keeping up with updates from Waveform and Bitwig, my main DAWs atm. Best of luck with StudioOne, if I eventually get around to trying it I’ll probably make a few videos about it too.

    Hi Lismore Music! quick question for you - is midi synch to hardware working for you in 12 pro ? I'm trying to synch my Microfreak so I can record its audio but no matter what options I select it doesn't work. This works out of the box in waveform 11 and Ableton lite so its not hardware problem. :( :( :(

      I actually don’t have any hardware connected at the moment, besides usb stuff like keyboard and interface. Hopefully you’ll get it sorted. If it works in 11 it’s bound to be some small tweak that’s needed in 12.

      That's a strange phenomenon that I haven't encountered before. Hopefully someone in a forum or user group might be able to help. Check your settings and make sure you have the right settings selected for your interface with stereo out etc. That's all I can think of rn. I suspect there's a handy solution, hopefully you've found it already!

    How to gain separation between instruments.. I am getting everything in my face so to speak and I have done better in live situations but the DAW is quite formidable in the nuances so far.. I realize time will familiarize me to the labels and options but I had some issues with this regardless of DAT DAW or box.. I think my interfaces are good enough and I am using a Micro Freak and Akai for controllers but it seems crowded compared to the orchestras and large band recordings I've heard.. must be me bc same through speakers or headphones.. Thanks again..

      Oh I see, yeah studio recording is like a microscope and it takes a while to get to grips with all of the methods to make various things happen. I’d highly recommend studying up on EQ and compressors. Those two things help a lot once you learn how to use them, even subtly. I know how you feel though, when I started learning my way around DAWs I really appreciated the artistry of sound engineers!
      The first thing I used to do when I encountered clutter was to play with separating things in the stereo field with the pan knobs. It’s worth knowing though that most people listen in mono these days at least half the time through phones and portable speakers, so the clutter will still be there. With EQ you can choose different frequency ranges for each instrument to live in. That does a lot for separation of sounds. Compressors essentially make the quieter bits louder. With some subtle finessing this can help each instrument to shine through.
      I hope these tips help.

      @@tracktionwaveformtips Spot On Teach - I realize now how unintentionally disrespectful and unimpressed I must have seemed to look down from stage as if the sound techs were glorified roadies.. but just like it took years for me to master my instruments and keep working on them the same holds true for these great listeners who know their boards.. I am humbled but I connected a few dots today.. I remember words of wisdom: Whatever you do with all of your heart and power for a few hours everyday over 30 days will become yours to do with like a Pro.. Gotta Get Back To Work.. but I'm watching for your channel.. Peace

    I like Waveform Free v12 on my MacBook. I’m a Mac/Logic guy, but always interested in a free DAW alternative. What’s your option on Waveform Free versus Pro?

    • @tracktionwaveformtips
      @tracktionwaveformtips  2 роки тому +1

      I think Waveform Free is amazing for a free DAW, but I love all the extra stuff that comes with the pro version too. It depends on what you want/need in your own productions. You could definitely make pro quality tracks in Waveform Free, and it’s fantastic that there’s no restriction on using external plugins. In pro though you get more instruments, effects and midi tools to make your life easier, or simply to have more choices with sound design etc. I’d recommend trying the demo if you’re curious.
      I used to use Logic a lot on a MacBook but then changed OS with my new machine. Bye bye Logic, hello Waveform. I can do more or less all of the same stuff in either DAW.

      @@tracktionwaveformtips thx. I’m new to Waveform and can’t help but compare to Logic. So far I find Waveform has most of the equivalent features and tools. Of course it doesn’t have the same number of virtual instruments and plugins, but it looks like Traction sells bundles/extensions with more VSTs and plugins.

    • @tracktionwaveformtips
      @tracktionwaveformtips  2 роки тому +1

      @@JeffyG Yes, since version 12, they've added some nice bundles to add onto Waveform Free so that there's now a handy middle ground between free and pro. You can pick and choose what you add, including some of the extra features from Pro. I love that.
      As for Logic, a lot of the plugins in that DAW seemed to be getting dated or unexciting somehow. It might be just a personal thing though, I don't know. I got Waveform Pro entirely free as an educator a few years ago (long before this UA-cam channel) and I was really excited to find so many new and interesting sounds to use. I love that Tracktion is a small team, it feels like family, all very approachable people. Such a contrast to Logic. I have no idea who develops Logic besides it being from Apple. That's a very different feeling. Yes, Logic is an impressive DAW and looks slick, but I've been enticed to delve far deeper into Waveform and Bitwig than I ever was with Logic. That may also be personal preference, and my propensity to be drawn to underdogs and independent businesses.
      There are a lot of things that can be done in Waveform that I haven't seen in other DAWs besides Bitwig. Check out Racks. You can modulate anything anywhere (even plugins) with the DAW's own LFOs and you can set up all sorts of complex routing between series and parallel. Having used that stuff, I'm very unlikely to ever use a DAW that doesn't have them. Then the Pro version goes beyond just LFOs and offers steps and more besides. Well worth exploring that stuff. There's a 3 month trial period for Waveform Pro too so check it out if that sounds interesting to you.

      @@tracktionwaveformtips I share your inclination for a small, innovative, development team. Even running on Linux is attractive. Friends would call me an Apple fanboy, and I was an advocate during the Steve Jobs years, but Logic was acquired from eMagic and the current strategy at Apple is a bit of a mystery. What isn’t clear is the business strategy behind Traction either. Logic is only $199 usd but it drives hardware sales, where margins on Mac’s is high. Avid wants to sell ProTools to drive expensive control surfaces and all the hardware found in a studio. Presonus was doing the same, but was recently bought by Fender. I spoke to the Focusrite/Novation/Adam/Sequential team, and I think they’re also debating if their software and apps can drive hardware sales.

    • @tracktionwaveformtips
      @tracktionwaveformtips  2 роки тому +1

      @@JeffyG Yes, interesting. I was on Mac for about 20 years but couldn't really justify the expense with my most recent computer, especially when I looked into what I could build myself for the same price. Now I've got a beast of a machine that I mostly run Linux on and occasionally boot into Windows 11 on the odd occasion when I fancy using the plugins that don't support Linux.
      I got really mad a few times with Apple as a user. The first time was when they changed from PPC to Intel, making my laptop obsolete way too fast. The second time was when they changed their drive format with an OS upgrade that made lots of my software obsolete, yet they made it damn near impossible to roll back to a previous OS version. The third time was when my version of Logic Pro was rendered useless yet again by an OS upgrade, which also made my poor laptop to whine with the strain of whatever extra processes the new OS version was doing. To add insult to injury, I was expected to pay full price for Logic again, fo rI think the 4th time. No sense of rewarding customer loyalty. That made me mad. I also wondered whether Apple were about to lose all sense of direction without Steve Jobs, so I started playing with Linux as a dual boot. I've been really surprised at how much I can do with Linux, and how similar it feels to MacOS. Functionally it reminds me a lot of OS9, back when the user had a lot more control of what was going on and you could just dig around the system to see if you could figure out how it all worked. OSX kind of locked a lot of that down. Probably safer for the average user, but I have always liked to tweak things and customise to my own desires. Linux is great for that kind of mind.
      Regarding Tracktion, it's back in the hands of the original team after a while with Mackie. They're a sound bunch of people and I've spoken to them all directly since running this channel. They strike me as people who are simply driven by their love of the product. I think it's a fabulous DAW that deserves to be up there with the big names.
      I also love Bitwig. They regularly pump out great new features with admirable German efficiency and they've really taken the DAW world by storm. I enjoy that DAW for a lot of things but I gravitate towards Waveform for a lot of other things. There's a great simple logic to the workflow once you get the hang of it. I really enjoy mixing in Waveform. It's all very visual with handy hotkeys to navigate around, and some great tools to work with.
      Oh btw, back to Apple... Since building my new computer, I've been seriously impressed by Apple's M1 chip. It seems they're not as rudderless as I'd feared. If I can ever afford a new laptop I might just consider one of those. The efficiency, power and silence of them is something I'd adore in a laptop. No jumbo jet noises from fans while working on big projects. Amazing! For now though, I'm happy with my desktop. It's not mobile but it's got all the power I need.

      Your previous track shouldn’t record onto your new track. The steps I show are to select your input device on the left and record arm the track by pushing the little red button there, and make sure the same red button on the previous track is unarmed. If you do all of that, you’re good to go.
      If you fancy getting fancy, you could record your solo over and over on loop and then choose which take (or pieces of takes) that you like best:
