Dear guys, girls and others, sorry about the audio being mono at the start of this video. It was my first time ever using OBS and I hadn't quite figured out how to set up the audio properly yet. Oops! 😅
Another great video, Bren. For me, the biggest strengths of Waveform are: (1) the pattern generator (easy song setup), (2) the customizable action bar (and flexible interface), (3) the midi editor (and the many midi tools), and (4) the intuitive "favorites" feature. I'm able to quickly find the plugins I need (that I can organize with tags), then use the pattern generator to quickly build chords and parts, and then work the details out in the midi editor with all the midi tools. And the action bar really helps open windows and move notes around - things like that. Overall, I've never used a program that made songwriting so easy (and fun).
Thanks John, yes I have used all of those things a lot more since I made this video and you’re right, they’re great. I’ve made videos about some of them since, but I probably should do an updated take on my favourite stuff sometime. There’s so much to love!
well done for persisting with Waveform even though it felt uncomfortable to start with. I'm still at that point. Haven't finished any tracks with it yet. I used to use Studio ONE mostly but now I'm on Linux (with Bitwig, Reaper, Harrison Mixbus, and Waveform) all running natively. I still have to figure out stuff like yaBridge so I can run my other plugins like Scaler2 and Melda production.
Thanks! I also use Bitwig and Harrison Mixbus. I'll probably get around to Reaper sometime too since so many people rave about it. For now, I have enough different DAWs to keep me occupied. As a matter of interest, which of those DAWs do you find most intuitive to use? For me it's Bitwig most of the time, although I enjoy some of the unique features of Waveform, and I really like the feel of Mixbus for mixing, and the sound of it. I've got a few projects that I've been working on in Waveform that I'll make videos about soon. It's amazing to have such choice these days. Also Zrythm is shaping up to be a very interesting DAW. Still in alpha but seems great so far. I'm with you on the Yabridge thing. I have yet to figure it all out. It might be a project I'll tackle in the winter.
@@tracktionwaveformtips I suppose out of all the Linux ones, reaper would be the easiest (most intuitive), but honestly, Bitwig is the most rewarding, but it does take some applied effort to learn. It's taken me about 2 years to really appreciate Bitwig as a casual user of it, and I still have a long way to go with it. I haven't even really played with it's modular grid yet (I have cherry audio for that).
Killer feature for me is the scrub navigator on the timeline, arrow keys left and right, and the zoom in and out, arrow keys up and down. Perfectly weighted, ultra fast to jump a bit back or ahead without missing a beat (badabum). Other DAWs makes you fumble with mouse clicks and 2 or 3 diff. keyb. shortcuts way too much *edit: also rewire is baked in, makes it a good companion to Ableton Lite or Reason (win/mac). *edit2: very lean code, audio editing on a Win 10 Atom tablet is feasable Great to see a new Linux audio YT channel, good man.
Yeah I hate having to mouse click for stuff. I love keyboard shortcuts, especially simple ones! I still forget sometimes which DAW does what since I’m currently learning Waveform and Bitwig simultaneously, but I’m getting there. I might one day decide to stick to just one DAW but that depends on features added in future updates. And then there’s Harrison Mixbus. Loads of potential in that one too, but I can’t split my focus 3 ways at once. I use it for mixing sometimes and like it a lot. Not for midi production though, too awkward compared to the other two.
@@tracktionwaveformtips we seem to be on the same page re. prefs and such looking fw to seeing more on your channel will comment everywhere all the time for sure
I'm really glad I found your channel. I wonder how many people like myself are only using DAWs to a fraction of their capability? The chord/arpeggio feature looks very useful, I've not used it so far, I must give it a try. One problem with all the DAWs is that I find I spend far too much time getting to grips with the features, plugins, tools and shortcuts, instead of making a finished composition.
Great, I’m glad you’re getting something out of it! Wait until you see what you can do with automation, and the amazingness of racks! I think learning a daw just takes time and patience. There’s no wrong way really, just a learning curve. You’re doing well if you’re making full tracks already. Some people spend all their time playing with stuff and never finish anything. A good way to learn without even noticing is when you’re bored, to pick something you’ve never used before (or a technique you haven’t tried) and play with it. You might find inspiration on UA-cam or in the manual itself, which is huge and pretty comprehensive. I’m learning my way around Bitwig at the moment like that. I like having a few different DAWs for different workflows.
Cool video man! I could never get to grips with this DAW when i tried it, seems really powerful though! If i was gonna change DAWs id definitely have another look at this!
Thanks Garron! I doubt you’ll be changing from Bitwig though, it’s amazing and keeps getting better and better. Then again, you could be like me and end up using 2 or 3 DAWs for different purposes. I also use Bitwig and Mixbus.
Great video! I just have a question though, when I'm using Waveform and I try to split a clip it doesn't split it in the cursor's position, it does it at random, sometimes 2 bars ahead, a half-bar behing, and so on. Has it happened to you as well? is there a way to fix it?
Thank you! That thing of your clip splitting in a random place sounds familiar. I may have encountered it at some point. There are little annoying bugs like this in Waveform from time to time. I’d recommend joining the Facebook groups or subreddits or forums. You can find a lot of answers on these places. I certainly have.
When you use the Tracktion Sampler on linux do you find it cpu peaks? I loaded basic samples from sample packs into 5 instances of the sampler on an i7 and it was almost 70% of the daw cpu usage. Find it really weird. Its a great daw but seems a bit buggy on Linux
That’s interesting and must be annoying! You should have plenty of headroom on an i7. I’ve never noticed cpu peaks with it but I’ll keep an eye on it and see.
Also, yes, it certainly has some bugs to iron out but I’m hopeful about Waveform 12. I’ve heard that a whole lot of rebuilding has been done. I can’t wait!
Awesome I wasn't sure if you made this one yet :P, the midi stuff looks awesome I can't wait to check that out, I am horrific at staying on tempo lol I wonder if groove docter could help, also a big linux, and open source supporter I was happy to find out that waveform is open with all its code and works on linux
Yeah Groove Doctor can help a lot, but there are other ways of doing things in Waveform too that are worth exploring where you can move notes around without it affecting phase (which can cause strange washy sounds sometimes like they’re coming from a distant bathroom)... I’d highly recommend reading the manual for any stuff you’re doing. There’s some great tips in there. While you’re waiting, I’m pretty sure you can download a fully functioning trial version with the pro features for 90 days. You might need to turn them on in settings. Lastly, I don’t think that Waveform is 100% open source, but the Tracktion engine that the DAW is built on certainly is.
Wow, I’d heard really good things about Studio One. I wonder why it’s crashing so much on a new system. Waveform is very good. It crashes very occasionally, but has excellent auto save. Bitwig is also worth a try if you don’t get on with Waveform I’ve made a couple of videos about it and find it great for a particular kind of workflow.
Hi Brin have chatted before but Im still getting frustrated with trying to make my fantom 0 work with ableton lite which it comes with. So I bought a windows 10 laptop and I spend so much time with crashes of both windows and ableton. If you have knowledge and access can you show how to set it up with waveform so you can use the keyboards sounds etc. Not worried about daw control on the keyboard. i think if it is at all doable ableton can go.
ok have made some progress and pleased to say it is working. How can yu control the recording level on a track and wondering if recording a drum track canbe done from the fantom too = maybe needs to be track 8. Anyway enjoy listening to you so thx again.
Thanks Rodney. Oh good, glad to hear you got it sorted to some degree. Yes you absolutely can control the recording level. That features in some of my getting started videos. As for the drums, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to do that too. I'm not familiar with that particular keyboard so your best bet is to ask around forums dedicated to that, or ask the company directly for advice.
Thanks Richard, Carla seems to run OK in Waveform. However, the DAW can be finicky about some 3rd party plugins like an issue I had with Vital today where it lasted about 20 mins each time and then crashed... I also tried installing yabridge again, and I failed again. It might be that Manjaro’s kernel might be too new, or maybe it’s because I need to read the wiki about yabridge, or maybe I’m just an idiot! 🤔😂 I’ll probably go with my original plan of booting into Windows sometime just to give it a go, if I can stomach it! 😝
@@richardpress9551 at the moment it’s Manjaro. I keep coming back to it any time I distro-hop. I play around in lots of distros from time to time though.
