      what you do is you gotta use a mix tool and a level meter and get it at 12 input gain and the meter will read it can be a little under in your studio daw

    Thanks for the videos. I have a question. For the life of me, I cannot get a smooth sound out of amplitube. I have made sure the input on my 2i2 interface is not clipping, I made sure the "input meter" was in an acceptable range, I made sure the "output" also wasnt too loud and my amps just sound a bit more distorted like it is a pedal instead of an AMP Sim. I see no one with a fix for this online. Any thoughts? My guitar is an epiphone les paul custom and I also tried a Gibson SG to test out two guitars.
    I even recorded an amp in room with an SM57 which sounds killer, but when I go direct for an amp sim it just sounds... fake.

      I feel your pain! I couldn’t have said it better! I’m trying to finish a composition and all I need is to record a slide guitar track. I prefer an on-the-edge breskup tone or as they say, “mild overdrive” (like the sound of Derek Trucks). I really like Amplitube 5’s interface but as you said, “for the life of me” I cannot get a decent or realistic sound. It all just doesn’t sound real and way too fizzy! Even lowered the input gain on my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 audio interface to ZERO (as recommended by Cody) but still No-Go. Then I found the free amp sim called “The Classic Thirty” by Dave Clark (exe-consulting). Totally impressed. In fact floored! It works without all the pain and frustration! Link below: click the word “downloads” under the “free” box (green rectangle). Not an overly attractive interface (like amplitube 5) and yes, only one amp but it’s loaded with effects at the bottom of the interface using on/off LEDs. Looks complicated but it really isn’t. Follow the tutorial link below as well. The tutorial shows a different amp but the interface layout is basically the same. Wait until you hear it!!

      Tutorial:

      Other free amps and effects by Dave Clark: the “Classic F” sounds great as well but I could not get the “Tiny F” to sound as good as both the “Classic Thirty” and “Classic F”. If using your phone, scroll down to see the list of free products.

    This advice only works for those who do not care about accuracy; while being bad advice for those looking to get the most realistic response from plugins. Haven't you heard all the fuss lately about the community trying to move away from messing around with the input knob on audio interfaces so we can get the most accurate response from amp sim plugins? A guy named Ed S got the ball rolling on this with his video "how to set optimal input level for amp sim plugins" and plenty of major channels (John Cordy, Rhett Shull, Rabea Massad just to name a few) have been discussing this issue, with this particular amp sim taking a lot of heat. I see you've only used Amplitube in this video, they are notorious for refusing to give out accurate numbers for what to set their plugin levels at, and are suspected to have used different levels when making different models! Ed S and others have videos specifically regarding amplitube for those who are interested. \m/

      I think some people just don't get it.... or don't want to... .
      I mean its much easier to watch a peak meter and/or a vu meter and fiddle around with the input on your interface each time you plug in a different guitar (maybe even risk clipping) and then again fiddle around with the input on the plugin, hoping that it's right (but basically just stepping in the dark) and never go over the red (in the plugin). and then use tons of different pedals because theres not enough distortion even if the amp is fully cranked. and then realize that this distortion pedal adds his own character that you dont want, so you use a clean boost, because your input meter is already nearly "clipping" and therefore you can't just use the (plugin)input slider (whitch makes no sense at all). and then realize that the real amp doesn't even sound close to your tone. and then beeing even more confused because everyone is telling you something different. and then... and then.... ..... ...
      Much easier than to look up one spec thats easy to find in your interface manual and do some very simple maths. Then set it and forget it. Amplitube/IK doesn't make it as easy as it could be, but still... there are "workarounds" and i made a video about it, a spreadsheet and even ToneNet presets to make it as easy as possible.
      (would be much better and more accurate if we would get official numbers from IK, but if they don't want to tell us,... we can't change it...)
      @Now, We Break It DOWN
      I understand that this video is intended to be as easy to understand as possible but maybe also think about, that some people (especially beginners) think this "gainstaging" makes ALL ampsims (especially amplitube) sound (more) realistic.
      They like it beacause it sounds different than before and they trust you and the plugin manufacturer and think this is what this amp(s) should sound like.
      Being even more confused when they find out (if they do....) that their amp sim tones are miles away from the tone you would get with the real amp at same settings.

      @Amusiastudio Місяць тому

      Was about to mention this also. Once you start gain staging properly like ED S suggests you realise how all over the place Amplitube is. Which is a shame because imo the modelling is actually better than neural dsp once you compare it with correct input and the same IR.

    Jorge, like you said this is sound engineer stuff but the end user is a guitar player. With how available amp sims, DAW, and everything else is now the guitar player needs to learn a little audio engineering. What make things worse is the interface companies don't have in their manuals where the sweet spot is for gain controls, or at least where DB 0 is. It seems like almost all new guitar players starting with amp sims already start with bad gain structure beginning at the interface.
    Exploring a DAW, programming drums, and things like that interest me, but I'm still learning going through the intermediate phase of guitar playing.
    I just bought the new PRS SE CE24 standard satin that has the 85/15 S (not be confused with 85/15) pickups, it's like the more muddy / noisy version of the 85/15. The 85/15 S tone makes me think of it as a little better version of the Ibanez Quantum. I really like the guitar, and it's set up the way I like it straight out of the shipping box with a nice feeling satin neck.

    Hola Jorge! I've checked my pickups dc impedance (6.7k bridge, 6.5 middle, 6.3k neck). My amp sim is in hardware format (Line 6 Hx Stomp)...there are no meters or input volume knob so I open up Logic Pro to watch the vu meters. I just want to make sure I'm on the right track... when I load a preset logic's meter is hitting around -12. Does it sound good you may ask? As a beginner guitar player I like it. So the rest of the story goes I bought a preset from a youtuber (the guy has a solid reputation doing Line 6 presets). The presets main output in the HX Stomp says +8.0dbs. So the way I'm thinking is, the output volume of my preset may vary due to the amp/pedals I'm using as long as I'm hitting around -12db in Logic. Do I stand correct?

    • @Itsjorgelanzas
      @Itsjorgelanzas  2 місяці тому +1

      Hello my friend!! To answer the first part of your question, -12 might it what I recommend for full PAF style humbuckers, like 8-9k. For strat like guitars, I suggest you’re around -16 if you want to use some kind of OD to liven up your tone, and -14 if you prefer a little more pushed sound. Just as a reference, a tube screamer or a Klon cenatur and many others with the drive at minimum, start clipping your signal at around -15db, with different curves of course, so that gives you an idea of what’s happening with your tone. At -12, most pedals you use, you will already be clipping, even when the gain is on minimum. But, arguably that’s what you want. 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I hope this numbers and references help you my friend!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

    Wow. There is a lot to experiment with. One thing that is throwing me is that with Amplitude input set to 0.0db, I can still get a clean input at about 55% even with my Gain turned all the way down on my Behringer interface. Any downside to running with Gain on my interface all the way down?

    • @Itsjorgelanzas
      @Itsjorgelanzas  Місяць тому

      No down side at all really. Most interfaces and preamps have somewhere around 20db of gain when in zero. So you’re perfect, that’s why I like to use that meter as a simple amplitube convention to make sure you’re not destroying the signal before even hitting Amplitube. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏼 I hope this helps friend!

    I take a different, not "one size fits all approach" to setting input gain with my interface And amplitube. We all have a main guitar, so I use that guitar to judge input gain for my baseline input setting. My 1984 Baretta is a single humbucker with coil splitting main guitar. This sounds crazy but I use my ears to see how a distorted guitar set up sounds in amplitube and A/B that with a real world similar set-up. The only way I can get authentic tone is to clip my interface just slightly and keep the amplitube input meter just below red lighting. You can always back off on the amp within amplitube's gain knob, but without enough input right into amplitube, you'll never reach proper authentic saturation levels to sound convincing. It's a "you can always dial the sweet distortion" out but you won't hear the sweet distortion to begin with if the input is too low approach and you also get more sustain, dynamics and harmonics as a side benefit! :) Rock on friend.

    Thanks for putting this out. I’m curious how the “set your input level to right before it clips” advice even started. Was us metal heads always looking to push more distortion through?

    • @Itsjorgelanzas
      @Itsjorgelanzas  3 місяці тому

      Yeah. Hahaha it comes far beyond that 🤣🤣it’s an old sound engineering practice back in the day when you had to stay as far off from the hissssss and all the analog noise, so the idea was, you cut to tape as hot as possible, and then you can gate or whatever to bury the hiss. And I guess it stuck till today, but even then, their “almost clipping” was much quieter than what we’re working with now. And of course hahahaha the more input more gain, it became a thing amongst distortion junkies 🤣🤣 it’s just what it is! But now we don’t have to worry about that noise, unless the computer gets too hot and the fans start blasting 🤣🤣 anyway, have a great weekend my friend!!

I said this same thing on almost every video I made and on every video, I get many comments asking to explain what I’m doing with my input and they tell me something on their end.
