      I really hope I did it justice, it was difficult finding decent reference photos of 845. I have decals for a few more aircraft from HMAS Melbourne from that same time that I plan on doing eventually, an A-4 and a Seaking. Hope you'll stick around for those! Cheers!

    My late Father used to build the Airfix models back in the late 1960/70s where you had the model, the archetypal "tube of glue" and a fist full of paint brushes - he's have loved watching this build and marvelled at how the scope of what is available has expanded both in terms of parts and tools but also the paints, all he had was the Humbrol range. That Tracker is an outstanding piece.

    G'day Brett, an absolutely outstanding build and a stunning finished effect! Interesting that you mentioned the near pristine condition of these RAN aircraft. As a member of the RAAF, back in the 70s, mostly involved with our two C-130 Squadrons; I can tell you that the blokes at the squadrons and their 486th Maintenance Squadron took particular pride in keeping the exterior and interior of their aircraft in 'as new' condition.
    This was even though our Hercs did hard work in dusty outback regions and around the world in all kinds of adverse conditions.
    In repeated international air forces' C-130 competitions, RAAF Hercs had a habit of winning the display and presentation categories. I am pretty much sure this level of care applied, and probably still does, to all ADF aircraft.
    It's a logical extension of our military personnel dressing impeccably while on parade and during duties where they are on show to the public.
    The ADF 'Federation Guard' formation, from all three services, are a great example of this as they are used to represent our military at all official national and international events.
    Your RAN S-2 Tracker is one of the best models, used in a diorama, I've seen in a long time. You are a highly skilled, meticulous modeller who deserves genuine praise.
    Cheers, and all the best, Bill H.

      Hi Bill, thank you for the kind words. As I mentioned in my previous response, hearing from someone with the first hand knowledge is so very helpful and definitely a huge moral boost! This project was a lot of fun, but additionally I really out a lot of my heart and soul into it and wanted to do right by it, so I'm very glad for your approval! Your pride in your clean aircraft is well deserved as I could not find a single photo that showed the aircraft in anything short of spotless (minus some exhaust staining)! Thanks again for your comments and for watching!
      Cheers
      Brett

    The coating on aircraft carrier and all ship decks is called nn skid or non skid. Its been a while since Ive served. Used to be a sonar tech. Also was cross trained to be a torpedo man and to strap on the torpedoes to the SH60s we had on the FFG7 I was on. That wouyld make a nice diorama. An SH60 sitting on the RAST gear that traps the helo so it can be reeled in onto the flight deck and moved into the hangar. You could model the side rails and the helo bay door and the raised windowed area that the officer who is in charge of landings hides inside of. Lots of interesting details in a small area.

    A great build and video Brett. I've flown a couple of times in a RAN Tracker many years ago in my early RAN days. Interestingly, I served in RAN submarines so have many recollections of exercising with the Trackers at sea when they were in service. As an "aviation nut", I think they are a great aircraft and the big twin radials sound just outstanding. Here's my philosophy , for what its worth. Each new kit you get, try something new on it, a new technique, new product
      or new tool (even if its a simple technique). You can keep doing this with the Airfixt starter kits, just start slowly trying new things, you'll see a lot of improvement in your skills. And, I still enjoying to the little airfix kits, they are decent kits that go together well enough. Keep at it and you'll get there!! Thanks for watching!

    Great build. I had to create a mold from the empty spaces in the cockpit behind the instruments panel and the area around the front landing gear bay to create a custom lead piece (actually 3, also behind the cockpit back bulkhead) all lead to impide the tail-sitting... it is a lot of weight and the landing gear is just there in their design limit... 2 years and still holding, but don't think it will forever.
    The torpedo bay is a shame... needs a full scratch rebuild or replacement. I did almost the same mods/scratch you did (up to the paper clip, really necessary)... the engineering of the kit is weird at some points, but overall the result is great. Very good explanations, thanks!

    Really nice work mate. I have the Italeri re-boxing of this kit in the stash that I intend to tackle one of these days and had been intending to do it in an Aussie scheme as well as the decals come with the kit. Probably wont do the photo-etch as my hands and eyes are just not up for it these days.

      You can easily get away with out the PE, most of it is hidden anyways, and really the exterior only needs some sanding and TLC to get it looking good.

    Nice build, man!
    This kit requires brass landing gear legs due to its weight.
    Other than that it's OK (accurate geometry, crisp detail, etc.).
    The only drawback is very sparse detail in the cockpit, bomb bay and gear wells.

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  9 місяців тому

      I agree, I think the torpedo bay is the most unfortunate area on the kit, being that this aircraft's whole purpose is to take torpedoes!

    • @gadeeshi
      @gadeeshi 9 місяців тому +1

      @@HammerheadModelMaking it's only purpose is to search submarines and just in rare cases attack them with torpedoes :)
      Also panel lines and overall surface require good sanding with fine greed sandpapers and melamine foam before priming and painting.

    I had a whole lot of trouble building the Grumman S2N model from Kinetic. Mine is modelled after our own Navy. " Koninklijke Marine" from the netherlands V 159. The folding part of the wings weren't easy to fit correctly also the searchlight provided was terrible. I had to make my own. Otherwise i turned out great. I have photo's for the result. ( V is for Valkenburg before that it had the D on the rudder.

    Meu amigo, muito bom dia! Eu sou mecânico de TRACKERS e servi no porta aviões brasileiro Minas Gerais. No Brasil daquela época, os Trackers pertenciam à FORÇA AÉREA BRASILEIRA e viajávamos embarcados no navio para operarmos aviões. Tenho um carinho enorme pelo Tracker e na minha coleção de modelos tenho três deles e mais outros três para serem montados. Meus parabéns pelo teu excelente trabalho. Os meus modelos estão bonitos, porém os teus são incomparáveis. Continue assim e um forte abraço desta velha águia altaneira. Cap VARGAS

    Outstanding job Brett. I'm new to your channel and I'm loving catching up with your builds. You strike a great balance between detail and brevity. One question on this one. The "Y" on the starboard aft NAVY decal. Is that intentional? It seems odd. And once seeing it, it kept drawing my eye. Keep up the good work and great videos!

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  7 місяців тому

      You're the first to catch that! Yeah, I actually didn't even catch it myself until after I had taken the final pictures and had them up in photoshop. Best I can guess is some of the decal of the "Y" lifted off with some masking tape when I was making a small correction in that area. I keep meaning to go back in and try and fix it, but just haven't wanted to yet.

The E-1Tracer is still there, which is a derivative of the S-2, and of that same visit, it was sitting normally on all its gear. There are photos of the E-1 sitting with its nose gear off the ground, even on the Intrepids official website.

      @HammerheadModelMaking  5 місяців тому

      Normally I will do some sort of either pre or post shading on a 1/48 scale aircraft, but the Aussies kept their Trackers in such good condition that I felt it didn't really fit in this case. If I were to do another one of these trackers, but in American markings I think I would, they tended to get a little more abused (not that they weren't taken care off, but probably just being used more).

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  8 місяців тому

      Hey, thanks for watching, as for the PE for the P-61, its going to depend on which P-61 kit you have, but I find the best place to start is the Eduard website:
      www.eduard.com/index.php?cur=2&cl=search&searchparam=p-61#nextproducts
      I know they ship world wide, but at the least if you can at least confirm which set you need, then it might be easier to search for that one at more local online retailers.
