    That last section, where she sounds more operatic, is in honour of the fact that Screaming Jay was a trained opera singer who couldn't get work in that area.

    i can tell she was going to be a star when she sang Tom Jones "I who have nothing" .. her voice was strong and mature at that age , she had a sense of knowing how to put the feeling in it as so many adults can't do . thank you for the reaction ..till next time

    The fact that she can either memorize all the words of those 3 songs (or reading off cards?) in her 2nd language at the age of 6 seems miraculous to me. Her timing, her concept of the music accompaniment tells me she’s going to be a 🌟STAR! Her focus is superb! Plus she even sounds like Billie Holiday ! And she sounds like the trumpet!! Her stage presence at such a young age is amazing! She never seems nervous. Her various tones in her voices and her range... absolutely astonishing! PLEASE don’t let Hollywood or whomever ruin her! Ages 6,7,8 & 9! This video.

    I truly think that Angelina like many other musicians draws more inspiration when they are in front of an audience.
    I've seen this with many of her live performances.
    There's a video in AJ fanclub mosarz of Angelina preparing to go to her audition which seems very early. She didn't have anything to do with combing her hair, lol. Love this girl!

    • @thealanpapier
      @thealanpapier  3 роки тому +6

      What you say makes sense.
      She always says she wants to sing for the world- so she would be inspired in front of an audience
      And it would explain the difference between the 2 Gloomy Sunday performances

      Angelina said that what she misses most during this shutdown period is singing live in front of an audience. She gets amped up in those situations, and feeds off of the energy of the audience.

    • @DonaldLancon

      Are you referring to this video? ua-cam.com/video/r5GzS25fziY/v-deo.html It's not from "Fanclub Mosarz", nor was it recorded on the day of her audition, but it does show her waking up (or perhaps pretending to?) on the morning she is "going to _Norske Talenter_ " (as she says at the beginning of the video). And it shows her brushing her hair… so, we know she did do that at least occasionally. [wink]
      The video shows up as having been posted on 2014-02-06, the day _before_ she reportedly sang "I'm a Fool to Want You" in the second round. But according to a UA-cam help page, video upload dates are based on U.S. Pacific Time. So, that would mean the video could have been recorded and posted before 9 a.m. Norway time on the day she performed (because then it would have still been before midnight "the day before" on the U.S. West Coast). We know that the girl in the red dress seen behind Angelina as she sang IAFTWY (her name is Inna) performed in the second round in Oslo (according to an article Ole M found), so Angelina would have already been relatively close to the venue (but I don't know which venue, exactly). I say this because she seems to have needed to travel to Trondheim from Oslo (a 7-hour road trip, or perhaps even a plane ride) for her "Gloomy Sunday" audition (unless she was already in Trondheim for some reason). Given that she was said to have been waiting a long time to audition (in the long video with English subtitles [v=d3gSho9yf88]), that probably means they left Oslo the day before. That seems to have not been necessary for the second round.

    • @madelaca4589
      @madelaca4589 3 роки тому

      @@DonaldLancon I'm not so knowledgeable as you Donald, lol. So from the top of my mind, I thought the video was on Mosarz and not Sara's channel. And you're probably right when you say it was not her first audition. But about the hair, she just comb one single strand and left the rest as it was, lol. That was so cute for me!

    I enjoyed that a lot Alan. And you are so right about her arrangement and performance of "I Put a Spell on You". It now has over 8M views, and I believe that someday when she is more recognized all around the world, it will have 200M views. Plain and simply, it is a MASTERPIECE! And I only know of one performance by a 9 year old that comes even close to it. Amira Willighagen's audition at age 9 on Holland's Got Talent: ua-cam.com/video/qDqTBlKU4CE/v-deo.html It has over 41M views, and is made even more amazing when you realize that she taught herself to sing opera by watching You Tube. She had never had a lesson. Talk about mind-blowing. But again, I have never seen anything like what Angelina did with "I Put a Spell on You". I'm still Amazed every time I see/hear it. Thanks again Alan. I always love your Angelina compositions. 💕

  • @lengould9262
    @lengould9262 3 роки тому +1

    Wonderful analysis Alan. What most impresses me is the stunning improvment she made in her technique from age 7 at the start of NGT (Gloomy Sunday) and age 8 in the finale (Summertime)! Amazing! In Gloomy she was great, but made almost no use of that signature jazz vibrato, and at age 7 had little natural vibrato either. She just did a stunning job "for a 7 year old". By the end, she had learned controlled vibrato, perfect breath control, ability to hold notes long beyond what a child her age should be able to do, and jazz phrasing at an expert level.
    It's almost like she had always had these capacities, but just didn't realize that judges thought they were important until an expert teacher, in a single short lesson (really, how much time did she have between appearances?), explained to her that these abilities, if demonstrated, would impress the audience. So she just decided to include them. Like "Oh! That would help? OK then!" And suddenly she's doing all the things pro's spend years learning, if ever. Incredible!

    Alan, right off the bat, I will remain on Angelina's journey literally, forever. But I will never, ever forget the early days when she started out. I don't treat the early performances as unbelievable. Rather, I regard them as incredible and works of art. Her focus "when the curtain goes up" is totally professional and she scores 100! I loved your 6-9 outlook and I would like to comment, too. "6" You were right on! Happy go lucky havin' a ball! "7" What you pointed out has continued to follow her in her career. Like a great ballplayer, she's good, but in the clutch she turns it on. You said the rehearsal and live performance of Gloomy Sunday sounded the same. I agree. But, take another look at both clips and see what I see. The brightness in her eyes and her focus transformed into energy because of the drama of the situation. Again, coming through in the clutch. "8" She now has become loaded with confidence. She can't wait to perform. I love it when she smiles and also when she looks over at the trumpet player to make sure he's following the script perfectly! And, that one note blows everybody out of the water! I, personally, rank this version of Summertime by Angelina right up there close to the MASTERPIECE, Bohemian Rhapsody. (My opinion.) "9" I like to compare this to Dimash's SOS song. For a first time listen, yes, this one is "off the charts". Alan, you are so right. Preparing for this production she put all her dolls in the attic and knew, this is what she does! Here, she began to start arranging music and also recognized her ability to be creative. Alan, I don't want to jump ahead because I know you will devote an entire video to more of the upcoming years, maybe 10-12 or 13. But, in my view, when Angelina hits 10, she becomes a full fledged pro and someone who has to be taken very seriously.

  • @brucecumming8803
    @brucecumming8803 3 роки тому +3

    Interesting Alan. I too have noticed how Angelina doesn't attempt to produce her live performances in the rehearsals I've seen. She appears to just try things out and often has a bit of a laugh, but when she performs live she always rises to the occasion.
    I have a DVD of Elvis Presley's first big show in Los Vegas and the first half shows his rehearsals and the preparation.
    Elvis starts his rehearsals in a small room and it is similar to the way Angelina rehearses. It is very relaxed, with a lot of joking around and trying things out. Maybe all great performers work that way.
    Elvis's show was a big production with a backing choir and large band, so there were more formal dress rehearsals later, but they were also in a layback style.

    Fantastic, again. One of my favorite parts is her 2nd Verse Howl followed by the out-of-rhythm I LOVE YOU's. That is SO strange because the first two are 'in time' then she pauses and growls out #3 out-of-time, which draws our attention to her drama even more, I think. But your MELODIC moment is also fantastic where she's leading all those instruments. Of course, they all hold a steady note - no vibrato, no wavering - intentionally. But it's her voice to leads that passage. That's soooo uncommon. I've seen this over a year or so, and I remain blown away - some reactors mention this upon initial viewing but after so many viewings, and such a long history with music, I still think this is at the top of my performances list.
    As a coda, I was halfway hoping you'd step into Year 10 with her remarkable orchestral performance of SUMMERTIME. Slower and even more hypnotic.

      Screaming Jay Hawkins' original of this has three "I love you"s. Angelina groups her four with the second and third slightly tighter, as if gathering force, and then on the fourth one really lets rip. It's my favourite bit of the performance.

    That's a good idea Alan. Thank you for the work. It actually seems like a talent explosion 😀. There are a few factors at play here. The girl who promised to pray for Angelina's career. The music school from about 6 years. And then she discovered jazz for herself (I haven't heard any jazz songs from Angelina that were earlier than "Gloomy Sunday"). Perhaps the real explosion was during the Norske Talenter time. But the impression can also arise because we are dealing with different "sports". The rehearsals and exercises don't have to be perfect. At the auditions she has to do a good one take. And in "I put a Spell on You" in the studio she has an infinite number of attempts for every single line, can take full risk (she never dared to do this scream live) and in the end deliver a perfect work of art. I've read here a hundred times: "The B&W!"

    Alan, a reactor recently wrote, using convincing sounding evidence based on NGT recording/transmission schedules, that the elapsed time between 'Gloomy Sunday' and 'Summertime' was a shade under four months. If that's true, Angelina's visible (and audible) growth in confidence and as an artist over less than 12 weeks was nothing short of meteoric! Ron (Australia)

      @@thealanpapier In the long video of her "Gloomy Sunday" audition, with the on-screen subtitles (v=d3gSho9yf88), the voice-over says it had been a long day of waiting on the first day of auditions. As the episode was cut together, it's presented if as it she was last to perform that day (and I don't doubt that, as the producers probably usually try to "save the best for last"). So, she could have been waiting backstage for many hours.
      As for the clothing, they might have just waited until she was scheduled to go on to have her change into the white dress. Look at what she's wearing as they are leaving at the end of the video. As she waves goodbye, you can see that she's wearing a purple long-sleeved shirt (sweater, cardigan, whatever), that could be the same thing we see in the backstage video.

    Regarding how she sings "Summertime": in the past, I've talked about the crazy amount of "resonance" or "emphasis" she put on the "ah" sounds (including the diphthongs with that sound in them, as in "time" and "high"). Eventually, I hit on the perfect word to describe the sound she was going for: "brassy". When I first thought of that word, it suddenly dawned on me that she might have intentionally been "mimicking", as you put it, the sound of the trumpet, and that idea sent a chill through my entire body. It _stunned_ me. Because if it's true that she actually thought about it that way, and came up with the idea on her own, it's hard (IMO) not to see that as an instance of musical genius. (Before that idea came to me, I had assumed that she was simply adopting a kind of Dinah Washington vocal style, and she did it for "Summertime" because she was already preparing "What a Difference a Day Makes" when she was still in the competition, possibly as an alternate song choice [she performed WADADM less than 6 weeks later, on _Allsang på Grensen_ ]. But I like the "trumpet" explanation even better. [grin])

    Can you comment on Angelina’s explosion of contemporary , non-jazz covers in 2018-19? It seems that these videos were her shout to the world that she can do contemporary music. And right after she did AGT Champions 2020. And then Republic signed her and the covers ground to a near halt. Mission accomplished!

      Complicated question.
      On one hand, AJ is musically fearless. She just loves to sing and dives into everything.
      But then sometimes life circumstances get in the way. She moved to LA in 2018 so that must have been a bit of an upheaval. I think over the past 12 months, Covid more than Republic Records has cramped her output

    I'm not sure why, but the another very impressive thing that seems to get overlooked by most reactors to this song (including here) is the sustained last note. At least half the reactors have their comments almost finished while she is still holding that note (almost 8 seconds). You see a sort of confused look on their face when they realize she is still singing. I used to find it annoying, but now I look for it.

      So true! That note and the one Alan highlighted are super impressive!

      If you’re talking about “I Put A Spell On You” the last phrase goes on for a little over 14 seconds on a single breath!

      What I find annoying is when reactors cut the last note short and start commenting before it's completed. Not only because they miss how long the note is; they also miss what happens next. Angelina remains in the "very special, wonderful place" she goes when she sings, as she describes it, folds her arm over the chair, and deeply contemplates what she has just done. Check out the look on her face and the fluttering eyes. For me, it's one of the most poignant revelations of Angelina's inner life.

      Roger, yes, and I realize that most-used video is from Angelina's own channel, but I absolutely HATE the ending where the "Fly Me To The Moon" balloon overlays her wonderful final gesture... AND I see many blown-away reactors - realizing they have no words - then hop onto that FLY ME link and talk about it. (Probably because they have no other words!)

      @@rogerherbst6978 You know Alan did a previous video where he talked about sublime moments and that would certainly qualify as one of them. Another, for me, was in the Feeling Good "LIVE on The Stream Gir Tilbake" video, when the camera starts out behind her, comes forward and pauses in front of her face, then continues around. Her eyes stay on the camera for a second or two and she gives a little smile like, "I got this."

    hi Alan. Danilo here. I'd been wondering, what has he been up to after Kongsberg? working on AJ of course. going back to the roots to remind us all that what we were privileged to witness a couple of months ago is the result of a growth that started 10 years ago. exellent job. Keep it up. We Angels are all with you. You know that. love from your Italian friend.

    Have you ever noticed the two different styles of vibrato she uses on that word "care" in IPASOY? She starts with a very slow, "wide" vibrato and then switches to a "narrower", quicker vibrato, as she seems to deliberately "chop the end off" of each individual, um, cycle, I guess you would call it. I don't think I've ever heard that talked about in a reaction, but it certainly seems like a "remarkable" thing, to me.

    You must have seen enough of Angelina by now to know that she always goes up a notch or two in front of a live audience. How she lifts is open to interpretation, and focus may be one aspect, but she certainly does. The live "This is a Man's Word" @ ua-cam.com/video/HEm7tGrjIKk/v-deo.html is probably the best example. Apart from the vocal phrasing, I think that there are some clear body language changes as well, particularly facial expressions. If you can work it all out and bottle it, you will be a very rich man :-)

    It seems everyone likes to explain why Angelina goes barefoot on stage. But no one has explained why, especially when she was younger, she likes to wear a ring of flowers on her head. Is this a Norwegian tradition or just something Angelina does?
