I am just saying my opinion (concerning one aspect of her singing). Her "fry" sounds kind of artificial (not natural) and that is ruing her singing, despite how good she is in general.
Angelina actually doesn’t sing any type of genre. She sings her genre. It is her signature style. She can sing anything and make it her own. She does this by incorporating all types of genres into a song. Then she adds her magic Angelina dust to it.

Very nice reaction and analysis! As someone who learned to sing by listening to a lot of jazz music, Angelina does go back to those jazz vocal techniques in the songs she does. And you are correct that she has been combining Jazz, R&B, and Soul as she has gotten older. She had mentioned in a few interviews that she wants to combine old school sound with today's sound. How does one rate this performance when there is nothing on this level to compare it to? Angelina Jordan's jazzy version of "Bad Valentine" is indeed a testament to her monumental talent. But what she did in this song is what I am calling lyrical scat, which in my opinion was absolutely fantastic to hear and I hope we get more of that as I have never heard anyone do that before. I recommend you now go back in time to 8 year old Angelina singing a Dinah Washington cover of what a difference a day makes. This was 1 month after winning Norway's Got talent an out door concert with an audience of over a thousand (don't know if I can add the link just reply if you need me to)
I think it’s good for newcomers to start at the (near) beginning by watching her four Norway’s Got Talent performances at age 7/8. That way you can better compare her growth as an artist. Many of my very favorite of her performances were during her 10/12 years. She hit her stride at about age 10 and was arranging all her songs by then as well. Have fun! I think why this is a Pop/Jazz mix is the Toby is a Pop musician and AJ is best (in my opinion) as a Jazz singer. Her talent is so over the top that everything she sings is very listenable. When you advance through her repertoire, you will find Jazz elements mixed into her pop songs. I really love the Jazz and search out the more jazzy songs as opposed to her pop editions. If you can watch her rehearsal video for Fly Me to the Moon she did for Quincy Jones 85th birthday concert, you will hear more of a jazz sound (12 years old). The sound from her concert performance was layered over the video in order to see and hear her in the rehearsal. Have fun.
Great reaction! I get what you are saying about the jazz aspect. I just think that for an 18-year-old who can make it sound like a 40s track, it is such a gift. Easy on me the Adele cover and Billie Jean the Michael Jackson cover are exceptional, but there are so other many more including over a dozen self penned classics.

Yeah she slides amazingly too. There is more of that then you pointed out here, in every chorus and a few verses, with lots of other stuff and not big key changes, but it's fluid as opposed to steps probably half the note changes. For some crazy sliding around I adore her "MY Funny Valentine" she does it at 10, unreal, adorable and 16, way different, gorgeous sliding, and unreal. Amazing reaction thank you. ❤
Jazz is difficult to define because it encompasses a wide range of music spanning a period of over a hundred years, from ragtime to rock- infused fusion . I've always described this as Jazzy/ blues . If Angelina described it as Jazz/ Jazzy ? that's good enough for me .

In an interview during an "Little Big Shots" show she once was asked by the presenter if she does any scatting. She answered "not so much" and made clear that such thing is more or less only a warm up practice in her eyes. She then performed a little warm up for the audience and that was very funny. Great reaction. I love all the technical information. Also it is interesting you said you started the channel in part to boost up unknown singers. Angelina is in a sort of unique position here. She has superstar talent, and for a long time many in the industry have known this, but she is still unknown to most of the public. This is partly because back when she was 7 and 8 she won Norway's Got Talent and she was immediately flooded with concert and record offers, but she and her family decided to turn them down, and perform only a modest number ot times a year. This was partly because they wanted her to not have to go through the great stresses of being a child star, but instead enjoy a reasonably normal childhood. It was also because Angelina wanted to write her own songs, and didn't feel good enough yet. So she stayed in Norway, but then moved her family to L.A. when she was 12, and then when she graduated from high school she finally started working at her career full time. The other reason is that Angelina is such a unique singer and so rooted in jazz, a style of singing that has unfortunately gone out of style. She has been working on developing a pop style. In addition she needed to find the right song writer and producer to work with, and she seems to finally have that with Toby Gad, who worked with her on this song.
Angelina's two main influences are Billie Holiday and Elvis! She has said that without Billie Holiday there would be no Angelina Jordan! Only time I've heard her scat is in a video from an album recording session when she was 11 y.o. It was between two takes of "Cheek to Cheek" and she scat sang the melody to her self in the recording booth.. 🙂

Thank you Tim , my take on BV she is too focused on her career and is too busy to give this guy what he wanted, she had told him from the start about her life but her hadn't listened or didn't want to , she had to end it, and not allow him to continue creating his own version of the relationship or what could be, so she isn't bad, just a bad valentine, she is a sweetheart but also a strong mature women who can't be doing with distractions, so she actually did what was best for them both, she has briefly said she cared for him but he is no longer in her life , at another interview asked about relationships she just said guys are trouble. some have there own perspective without understanding the lyrics. Love this song and performance by AJ you might want to go back to the her first audition on Norway's Got Talent "Gloomy Sunday" Billie cover ,to where the legend was revealed to the world it is an important moment in the real time fairy-tale of the barefoot princess. I know that you have heard Angelina 3 times now, and I feel like a car spinning on pure ice, going absolutely nowhere, because I know that you have heard nothing yet that can make you understand this young girl's immense vocal talent and musical genius. But I feel comforted in the fact that you'll keep reacting to her, so with time you'll understand for real. She is a one off and more than a generational talent. She is not called the girl with 1000 voices for nothing. You never know what you will hear with her, one of the many things which make her so addictive.

There is no question, you'll be over 100K sooner than I can say, "You're Great!" Okay, now I'm not asking you to compare Angelina to anyone. BUT, besides the depth of her voice with all it's soulfulness and traces of jazz the other component which elevates her onto another level is her artistic qualities which I have to admit, I've never heard anyone sing like her before in my life. I don't know how much you've read about her but the one ingredient which attracts a listener more than any other one is her soulfulness which is genuine. Singers can apply vocal techniques to create an emotional feeling but Angelina finds the love in the message of anything she sings and she relates to it so genuinely we become mesmerized and react to every word, every note she sings. When Angelina was very young and became recognized as a prodigy she was interviewed often times and one of the questions always had to do with why doesn't she ever appear nervous. Her reply: "I am most comfortable IN MY LIFE when I am on stage singing to and for people." She wants her audience to feel her love when she sings and she also believes very strongly in order to make the world a better place to live for everyone we, as a people, must begin to love one another. I know you will concentrate on her musical journey and tell us what she is doing but I sincerely hope you take an interest in finding out more about her because she is someone very special. I don't know if you noticed but she was singing barefoot. She is a strong woman ( young lady) and she needs a strong partner who holds their own, that challenges her without negating her. Many women want a strong partner that add strength to the relationship, not water it down. Thus she wants someone who is fiery and is a "fighter".

Also listen to her EDM song Head above the water which is way out there, her rendition of Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley and her rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody are big treats... there is a great "leaked" fan made video of a demo for a song by Baby Fuzz "I'm still holding out for you" that was not released officially because Angelina was around 12 years old and her family did not like one of the last lines that hinted at suicide. But Baby Fuzz authorized the sharing of the leaked video.
Here is a Korean girl group, Oh My Girl(OMG). They are amazing and their songs are very addictive and overwhelming. Once you hear their songs, they won't leave your head. They won the 2nd prize in Queendom, the Korean survival contest in 2019.(creative and solid vocalists) They are a girl group whom girl groups hope to resemble, and called a master of remakes and monsters of dance moving line. Angelina has indeed stated she is focussing on her career over relationships in real life. HOWEVER that is not the point of the lyrics here. In this song she clearly wants a genuine relationship but ends up with a "Mr. Nice Guy" who is blinded by romantic fantasy and is idealizing her. Even when she reacts badly, that does not shatter the romantic illusions, so she does the only thing possible and just walks away.
So far she has not demonstrated true scatting, using just sounds. In this she does the first scat-rythme inspired few lines of words I've heard. Nothing yet like a Haley Reinhardt run. But I've heard that's an acquired skill requiring experience to sound natural and she's relatively young yet

I think she is a bad valentine because the guy is not being real. He just hears what he wants to hear and see what he wants to see. He doesn't even get mad when he should. So she warned him from the start, but he didn't listen.
She was born to sing jazz (or jazz inspired). I actually don’t really like the « Hollywood » version of her and her songs. It feels forced and not her. She is at her best when she lets her hair down and sings expressively.
I have an unpopular opinion; she's a very talented singer, but at the end of the day, you have to make music people want to listen to. And the vocal style is overwhelming for me and I don't really want to listen to her music.

And you are correct that she has been combining Jazz, R&B, and Soul as she has gotten older. She had mentioned in a few interviews that she wants to combine old school sound with today's sound. Angelina Jordan's jazzy version of "Bad Valentine" is indeed a testament to her monumental talent. But what she did in this song is what I am calling lyrical scat, which in my opinion was absolutely fantastic to hear and I hope we get more of that as I have never heard anyone do that before. I recommend you now go back in time to 8 year old Angelina singing a Dinah Washington cover of what a difference a day makes. This was 1 month after winning Norway's Got talent an out door concert with an audience of over a thousand (don't know if I can add the link just reply if you need me to)

I think it’s good for newcomers to start at the (near) beginning by watching her four Norway’s Got Talent performances at age 7/8. That way you can better compare her growth as an artist. Many of my very favorite of her performances were during her 10/12 years. She hit her stride at about age 10 and was arranging all her songs by then as well. Have fun! I think why this is a Pop/Jazz mix is the Toby is a Pop musician and AJ is best (in my opinion) as a Jazz singer. Her talent is so over the top that everything she sings is very listenable. When you advance through her repertoire, you will find Jazz elements mixed into her pop songs. I really love the Jazz and search out the more jazzy songs as opposed to her pop editions. If you can watch her rehearsal video for Fly Me to the Moon she did for Quincy Jones 85th birthday concert, you will hear more of a jazz sound (12 years old). The sound from her concert performance was layered over the video in order to see and hear her in the rehearsal. Have fun.

Yeah she slides amazingly too. There is more of that then you pointed out here, in every chorus and a few verses, with lots of other stuff and not big key changes, but it's fluid as opposed to steps probably half the note changes. For some crazy sliding around I adore her "MY Funny Valentine" she does it at 10, unreal, adorable and 16, way different, gorgeous sliding, and unreal. Amazing reaction thank you. ❤

Jazz is difficult to define because it encompasses a wide range of music spanning a period of over a hundred years, from ragtime to rock- infused fusion . I've always described this as Jazzy/ blues . If Angelina described it as Jazz/ Jazzy ? that's good enough for me .

In an interview during an "Little Big Shots" show she once was asked by the presenter if she does any scatting. She answered "not so much" and made clear that such thing is more or less only a warm up practice in her eyes. She then performed a little warm up for the audience and that was very funny. Great reaction. I love all the technical information. Also it is interesting you said you started the channel in part to boost up unknown singers. Angelina is in a sort of unique position here. She has superstar talent, and for a long time many in the industry have known this, but she is still unknown to most of the public.
This is partly because back when she was 7 and 8 she won Norway's Got Talent and she was immediately flooded with concert and record offers, but she and her family decided to turn them down, and perform only a modest number ot times a year. This was partly because they wanted her to not have to go through the great stresses of being a child star, but instead enjoy a reasonably normal childhood. It was also because Angelina wanted to write her own songs, and didn't feel good enough yet. So she stayed in Norway, but then moved her family to L.A. when she was 12, and then when she graduated from high school she finally started working at her career full time.
The other reason is that Angelina is such a unique singer and so rooted in jazz, a style of singing that has unfortunately gone out of style. She has been working on developing a pop style. In addition she needed to find the right song writer and producer to work with, and she seems to finally have that with Toby Gad, who worked with her on this song.

Thank you Tim , my take on BV she is too focused on her career and is too busy to give this guy what he wanted, she had told him from the start about her life but her hadn't listened or didn't want to , she had to end it, and not allow him to continue creating his own version of the relationship or what could be, so she isn't bad, just a bad valentine, she is a sweetheart but also a strong mature women who can't be doing with distractions, so she actually did what was best for them both, she has briefly said she cared for him but he is no longer in her life , at another interview asked about relationships she just said guys are trouble. some have there own perspective without understanding the lyrics. Love this song and performance by AJ you might want to go back to the her first audition on Norway's Got Talent "Gloomy Sunday" Billie cover ,to where the legend was revealed to the world it is an important moment in the real time fairy-tale of the barefoot princess. I know that you have heard Angelina 3 times now, and I feel like a car spinning on pure ice, going absolutely nowhere, because I know that you have heard nothing yet that can make you understand this young girl's immense vocal talent and musical genius. Okay, now I'm not asking you to compare Angelina to anyone. BUT, besides the depth of her voice with all it's soulfulness and traces of jazz the other component which elevates her onto another level is her artistic qualities which I have to admit, I've never heard anyone sing like her before in my life. I don't know how much you've read about her but the one ingredient which attracts a listener more than any other one is her soulfulness which is genuine. Singers can apply vocal techniques to create an emotional feeling but Angelina finds the love in the message of anything she sings and she relates to it so genuinely we become mesmerized and react to every word, every note she sings.
When Angelina was very young and became recognized as a prodigy she was interviewed often times and one of the questions always had to do with why doesn't she ever appear nervous. Her reply: "I am most comfortable IN MY LIFE when I am on stage singing to and for people." She wants her audience to feel her love when she sings and she also believes very strongly in order to make the world a better place to live for everyone we, as a people, must begin to love one another. I know you will concentrate on her musical journey and tell us what she is doing but I sincerely hope you take an interest in finding out more about her because she is someone very special. I don't know if you noticed but she was singing barefoot. There is a very long story which explains what that is all about and the story is, well, it will explain what I meant when I say she's very special.

The closest I've ever heard Angelina get, that sounds like scatting, is in this song, but with lyrics, not pure scatting.
Very nice professional reaction. I like your view on "vocal fry". There is not one unanimous theory on singing, the different schools, except maybe when it comes to anatomy and physiology involved. But most of the vocal coaches would call her crackly sound vocal fry. I think I agree with you! Her flavors are very varied, which is great! And her emotional approach special.
You might like to watch the way she started as a 7yo in Norway's got Talent. Talking Jazz. She sang Billie Holiday (twice, one a capella, perfect) in a way people start mentioning reincarnation. Really incredible! And Ella (Summertime) and Bang Bang (Nancy Sinatra, better than the original)! Mind blowing, I promise!

Yes, that’s a good example and I loved 7th heaven, and it should’ve gotten more attention as an original that she wrote herself.
While she does, at times, incorporate the 'slurring' style of Amy Winehouse, that is a small part of her
repertoire that is filled with all the musical elements she learned from her mentor, the great Billie Holiday
who was the most improvisational singer in history. Angelina has stated, 'If not for Billie Holiday, there
would be no Angelina Jordan'. She has never stated anything this profound about any other singer.

Angelina has indeed stated she is focussing on her career over relationships in real life. HOWEVER that is not the point of the lyrics here. In this song she clearly wants a genuine relationship but ends up with a "Mr. Nice Guy" who is blinded by romantic fantasy and is idealizing her.
Even when she reacts badly, that does not shatter the romantic illusions, so she does the only thing possible and just walks away.

So far she has not demonstrated true scatting, using just sounds. In this she does the first scat-rythme inspired few lines of words I've heard. Nothing yet like a Haley Reinhardt run. But I've heard that's an acquired skill requiring experience to sound natural and she's relatively young yet

She was born to sing jazz (or jazz inspired). I actually don’t really like the « Hollywood » version of her and her songs. It feels forced and not her. She is at her best when she lets her hair down and sings expressively.
I have an unpopular opinion; she's a very talented singer, but at the end of the day, you have to make music people want to listen to. And the vocal style is overwhelming for me and I don't really want to listen to her music.

A friend recommended your channel to me. I’m not the biggest AJ fan but respect her talent and rapidly growing fan base! She is something very special. I see some gray hair, I have a bit more. I’m an OG Carpenters fan and grew up with Karen on my turntable until she wasn’t. Recently I discovered, thanks to UA-cam algorithms, Tori Holub. A 21 year old singer who has a similar Alto/Contralto voice. She also can sing at Soprano levels, effortlessly. Has a vibrato that seemingly goes on forever. Butter, honey, molasses, syrup; you name the smooth liquid she’s been described that way. I’m going to leave two examples below for your perusal, if you’d like.
