thank you for making this video! I've been thinking about buying a N64 flashcart for years and I'm glad I procrastinated until now. will definitely be purchasing
As you mentioned yourself, the reality is that there are already 64DD conversions for the (newer) Everdrive X7. Which isn't the selling point most would think it is anyway, because the library of 64DD games is perhaps even more limited than that of the SuperGrafx or Virtuaboy. Also, what Luigiblood said is mostly irrelevant if you just want to play Official 64DD games (which is 99.9% of people). The effort involved in converting 64DD games to .n64 is only really a relevant issue for 64DD home-brew - as the majority of known officially licensed 64DD games have ALREADY been converted. This includes (as of date): _Dezaemon 3D DD, F-Zero X, Kyojin no Doshin, Mario Artist Communication Kit, Mario Artist paint Stuido, Mario Artist Polygon Studio, Mario Artist Talent Studio, Nihon Pro Golf, Randnet Disk, Sim City 64, Super Mario 64 DD and Zelda DD (to name some)._ The main advantage of this Flashcart is really price more than anything else - which is almost $100 less than what a comparable Everdrive X7 typically sells for in 2024. Making this a EXTREMELY compelling option for people who can not get a newer Everdrive because of limited availability, prohibitively high price or lack of access to them in their market.
Thank you! Things of Interest has been going on since 2018 as basically a 'tag' for videos all about interesting things from my collection, so there will definitely be more in the future!
I have one of the original Everdrive 64s... I've been thinking for years on upgrading for RTC support and not accidentally losing my save turning off the console, this product will probably be the push I needed to upgrade my N64 flashcart. Thank you.
@@mateusds2425 I'll be honest... i kind of regret not getting a new high end Everdrive instead. Don't get me wrong, it's a great product and works, but the novelty of DD games just didn't outweigh how little documentation there was for troubleshooting things... updating the firmware was extremely hard for me, I couldn't figure out hiw to add a background, the internal clock i can't set even when it says it's been and it has a battery; and as for the battery, I was pretty disappointed i had to buy one and install it myself along with the labels on the cart. I may be young at heart and keep my love and childish whimsy for Nintendo, but I'm old now and things like that are hard with shaky hands. It's a wonderful product and works great once all the nuances are dealt with... but it just feels like a less complete product compared to when I setup my original Everdrive.
It's a good thing someone makes an actual opensource cartridge that improves upon what the EverDrive can do. I believe there's even another one that uses the Pi Pico and SD Cards but I could be wrong here.
The 64DD version of Super Mario 64 was the version that was shown at the trade fair when the N64 was introduced. The 64DD was supposed to be released shortly after the release of the N64, which as we know was delayed until 2000. The version was then shown at the trade fair to demonstrate the 64DD, things like the loading time, etc. Another thing where Nintendo is anything but happy that this has found its way onto the Internet🤣
Great vid on the SummerCart64! Was neat to hear about all its 64DD features and playability. Though a couple corrections. - The Master Quest expansion, is more a release of the original revision of Master Quest before it became the release on the gamecube which were found in the gigaleak. There are differences in puzzle layouts in a good portion of the dungeons. - Unfortunately, what was done for OOT with both the dawn dusk expansion and the Master Quest expansion cannot be replicated for Mario Party. In OoT, we knew what files the game replaces due to a 64DD file built into the game to exchange data with the disk. OoT upon boot only checks if the 64DD is connected with a correct ID disk, then proceeds to the title screen and file select. Only after the file select screen does it exchange data for certain files, Dungeons, minimaps, treasure map icons, text and staff credits. OoT is the only game with these data hooks as other DD games do not use this process. Mario Party confirms if the 64DD is hooked up then proceeds to gives priority to the disk to run whatever it likes and replace anything it needs while still being able to call assets from the cartridge. This comes as a problem as with no outline on how it would work, there's really no way to create a custom expansion disk.
That USB-C port would be cool if people start making homemade games that uses it were you can hook up like 2 N64’s to play multiplayer games between them
THIS why I LOVE competition ! Those Krikzz Everdrive carts have been overpriced and could be made cheaper ! The SummerCart 64 proves just that and it's open sourced ! I LOVE to see competition for other remaining Krikzz Everdrives and the Terraonion SD Super System 3 and the NEO SD Pro!
I wonder if the open source platform would allow the USB-C port to be accessible from games so that a webcam or network adaptor could be hooked up with a USB-C hub to act as the camera pack and network adaptor pack. It would depend on what chip on the cartridge is powering this setup.
7:55 Heya, im wondering if anyone knows if the Summercart64 also supports disk swapping between games to transfer information between them (the dd did that sometimes, for example between Mario artist and sim city). It seems its mentioned at this timestamp, so thats why im asking.
I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but the start is off a little, you show the X7 at $159 but then start to list upgrade over your old flashcart. Problem is it sounds like you have an older X5 at $99 as the X7 has all but the 64DD upgrade and works more or less the same. The problems listed are a X5 things not X7. This may give others that don't know anything of the X5 vs X7 the wrong idea. Also, maybe one day the X7 can be updated to have 64DD as well. If it has the power to do so. Like how the newest update for the FXPAK PRO can do Super GameBoy on its own. P.S. Other then that part at the start, great video.
I think I got doshin, f zero DD, and simcity 64 working on my old everdrive using conversions. Running the actual unconverted games is probably better? I dunno
8:30 Would it be possible in theory to emulate the modem using the USB-C port on the Flashcart itself? Could be something for a future revision or fork.
low yield, and needing expensive parts for a console that is nearly 30 years old at this point. if you are skint, you can build a picocart for around 10$ US but as its mainly used for experimentation don't expect much in the way of support or features.
