  • Judy Garland sings Jobim's classic How Insensitive at her closing night performance at the Palace Theater. Remaster (I know, I know. Trust me, I use the term loosely) of an audience member made bootleg recording. Recorded August 26, 1967.

I hope Buzz and everyone else, yourself included will agree that her “wobbling” is not bad, and quite the contrary. Judy Garland's version of "How Insensitive" showcases several notable singing techniques that contribute to its emotional depth and musicality. Here are some key techniques:
      1. **Phrasing and Dynamics**: Garland is known for her expressive phrasing and dynamic control. She uses these techniques to convey the emotional nuances of the song, varying the volume and intensity to match the lyrics' sentiment.
      2. **Legato Singing**: Garland often employs a smooth, connected style of singing (legato), which enhances the song's melancholic and reflective mood. This technique helps in creating a seamless flow between notes and phrases.
In Judy Garland's version of "How Insensitive," she uses legato to enhance the song's emotional and lyrical quality. Here’s how:
      1. **Smooth Phrasing**: Garland sings the melodic lines in a smooth, connected manner, ensuring that each note flows seamlessly into the next. This creates a gentle, uninterrupted flow that matches the melancholic and reflective mood of the song.
      2. **Emotional Expression**: By using legato, Garland can sustain the emotional depth of each phrase. The continuous, flowing quality of legato singing allows her to maintain a sense of longing and introspection, which is central to the song's theme.
      3. **Melodic Emphasis**: Legato helps to highlight the melody, making it more lyrical and expressive. Garland’s use of legato ensures that the melody is presented in a smooth, cohesive manner, enhancing its beauty and emotional impact.
Overall, Garland's use of legato in "How Insensitive" contributes to the song's haunting and poignant atmosphere, allowing her to convey deep emotion and connect with the listener on a profound level.
There are many other techniques present too she also uses that contribute to the song’s emotional depth
      3. **Vibrato**: She uses a controlled vibrato, adding warmth and richness to sustained notes. This subtle vibrato gives her performance a distinctive emotional resonance that is purposefully employed but not necessarily noticeable by the audiences part, that is perhaps a bit why they are entranced by her performance also.
      4. **Breath Control**: Garland's breath control allows her to sustain long phrases without interruption, adding to the fluidity and expressiveness of her performance.
      5. **Expressive Use of Timbre**: She varies her vocal timbre or the “texture of her sound as in soft and quiet along with loud and harsh to match the song's mood, sometimes using a more breathy or delicate tone to convey vulnerability, and at other times a fuller, richer tone to express deeper emotions.
      6. **Emotional Interpretation; Beyond technical prowess, Garland's ability to infuse her singing with genuine emotion is a hallmark of her style. Her interpretation of the lyrics brings a profound sense of sorrow and introspection to the song.
These techniques, combined with her innate musicality and emotional intelligence, make Judy Garland's rendition of "How Insensitive" particularly compelling and memorable. That is why I have the opinion her song should be considered better than that in this instance and better defined by technique than the fact she is “really wobbling here”. If anything during this song she does more than “wobble” she captivates and fascinates her audience by putting to words the thoughts one has when looking back at the past and realizing what they did to make their past love move on from them to others and regretting their own consequences.
