Stephen Malkmus is just one of those musicians who touches something and turns it into gold. I took a break from his projects for a little while, came back and decided to look up if he was going on tour. Literally bought tickets for tomorrow's show. Coincidence? Or good timing? Usually I miss the boat with shows, I lucked out with this one. After watching this video I have butterflies! Amazing performance.
Fell in love with sm sonic youth dirty gig 1992 ... Pavement blew me away....such fun when i listen to in the mouth a desert im 19 again...great performer king of slacker

Saw them in Minneapolis at the start of their tour a week and a half after this performance, such a good show! Excellent band to watch live, Stephen Malkmus is absolutely amazing.
@@thebeaumonts1348 Maybe... but I can't get into this record. Can't even listen to it. It's preachy with the whole Middle America thing. I have no interest in what SM is saying here- musically of lyrically.
Malkmus has one of the best voices, poetry, and guitar stylings in the history of human music. I listened to all the Pavement albums obsessively for years. Lately I listen only to electronic music, but decided to see what Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks have been up to, and I was very pleased. I can't tolerate guitars anymore, except for a few bands, and this is really great.
So refreshing to see an artist still at work, unlike R. Cuomo. Although, I think a collaboration in which they alternated songwriting, for example, could possibly refresh Cuomo.
Saw SM and the Jicks live in Milwaukee and it was great. Second show of the tour, it was high energy the whole way through. The new album, Sparkle Hard, is complete with a great track flow.
I didn't know either Stephen Malkmus's face or name. Just checked it out on google with the idea that he really sounds like the singer from Pavement. In fact he is... Amazing live performance.. I just love his guitar sound and his voice, that's emotionally between Punk/Rock and Pop melodies.
Really tight. I remember seeing them circa 2003 for the Pig Lib tour. I thought the same then. Honestly, think I prefer them to Pavement overall. Definitely much better live.
same. i only started listening to him as solo / with the kicks. i always thought pavement were fuckin boring. idek enough about them to know if he as the driving force / main writer with them
i luv this luv it. but steve needs to give joanne some eye contact-shes feeling ignored. or is it just me Every time I watch these guys live I get that feeling
@@ciaranosullivan9352 You sound a bit entitled, heaven forbid if my 18 year old self went to go see Stephen Malkmus. How it would detract from the experience.
Millennial here... 34 now and grew up listening to Pavement. I also saw Steve and the Jicks back in 2007 in Chicago. Bought Brighten the Corners, Slanted and Enchanted and Pig Jib on CD when I was in high school and Face the Truth maybe a year after graduating.
Ciaran O Sullivan the funny thing is, I see more 40 year old women with phones in the audiences recording the whole show to put on their facebooks later than millennials or teenagers. Most of them are having a good time enjoying the music they love. The more toxic of the new generations aren’t going to these types of concerts. They’re into Ariana grande and lil whoever the fuck. Or whatever it is they’re listening too these days.

I love Malkmus' fuzz tone. To me, it's one of the most pleasant sounds a human can produce.
Although what I can see about 7:45 is a T Rex Replica (Delay, Echo), and an Earthquaker Grand Orbiter (phaser), so there must be a fuzz out of shot.
meant to reply to you and the guy above. It looked to me in a few recent videos like he's using EQD's Hoof Reaper (the Red/White variant)
Found it. Here's an alternate view @ 1:30 in to Shiggy you can see the Hoof Reaper off to the left

I didn't think he used the Big Cheese anymore.
Ah, yes... The Hoof Reaper. It sounds like he's just using the Hoof side. It sounds so good.
I bought the 'Sparkle Hard' album off the back of this performance and it's become my album of the year! A modern American classic.

I bought tix but then the show was canceled because of COVID. Brilliant album though.
Sorry to hear that I hope you have the chance to see him one day! @@frankrogers2968
SM is a modern day poet and guitar god.
That f'ing TONE.. bass & guitar, both... Jesus, it's satisfying!
like fine wine
Steve is such an awesome person and so many great songs many bands over the years and has his own unique sound , love it still in 2023
Brilliant. Exactly what we need in early 2021. Thank you Stephen.

Slacker prince of indie rock is what the New York Times coined him in the 90's.

So many great songs on this album. Love it

Pure idiosyncratic brilliance.
New found like for Cast Off from this vid
I like the guitar sound of Malkmus.
It makes me sentimental.

Not even 100,000 views. This makes me mad. And sad.
Edit: As of July 29th 2021: Still not there yet. This is outrageous!
love the piano.
Yeaah, so sweet !
I love Stephen Malkmus. It's like a LSD - free Of Montreal. ¡I love both!
Bravo!!!!!
8:30 nice passage...what a song writer
I love it how he tries to censure "shit" but censores "face" instead 17:07
I love Pavement!
oh fuck yes thank you kexp
can you dial back the ads please
hellllll yeahhhhh
Great
Is the intro to Refute supposed to sound like Range Life? (probably a deliberate tease...)
Anyone know what pedals he's using?
Fuck yeah
Stephen reminds me of Tony Hawk.
Pavement forever!
May get crucified for this but I like the Jicks more than I like Pavement!
Dude, not at all! Jicks are AMAZING!

Is it weird that 3 out of the 4 musicians are wearing teal??
Songs list pls🙏
Por qué el baterista es Gabriel Boric?
They're getting jicker
I'll never let a jicker date my daughter!
Nice Guild S-100 that Malkmus has...
Yeah and how sweet is that LP?
I. Curtis or S. Malkmus? It is a toss up.
Sparkle Hard is the long lost album that Pavement never made. Spiral has no songwriting credits, but we all know the truth.
i luv this
luv it. but steve needs to give joanne some eye contact-shes feeling ignored. or is it just me
Every time I watch these guys live I get that feeling
itll just make the jams that much better

Wadda voice :)

How entertaining?
I didn't know Billy Corgan is a member of the Jicks.
That's funny in more than one way

Billy Corgan lookalike on the other guitar? lol
Estamos esperando a King Gizzard¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Malkmus just can’t stop looking like an aging lesbian, can he.
dad noise
Cool but i'm still missing Pavement
This band could go so much bigger if the songwriter had good vocal melodies...Great guitar work but the vocals throw it all to waste
let's say you don't understand it. I find them greater than most I've heard in 2018.
He busts out more fantastic vocal melodies on a single album than most artists do in an entire career.
Sacrilege !
So over the quirky indie rock bands
Well get out there and change the scene, Larry Paul. What's holding ya back?
Nolan Neises yeah I’m trying
