You failed to mention that 14 of the 27 EU countries recognise Palestine. You mentioned Ireland's, Spain's and Norway's recent recognition of Palestine. Not once did you mention that 11 other EU countries recognise Palestine and have done so long before the 3 countries you did mention. You also failed to mention the Slovenia recognised Palestine since them, (on June 4, 2024) or that Armenia recognised Palestine on June 21, 2024
You failed to mention, too, that 147, of 193, states around the world recognise Palestine.
You could have put that very important context at the heart and centre of your description of the situation.
You also failed to mention that Alan Shatter is Jewish. His Jewishness is not, and never has been, an issue in relation to his membership of an Irish political party, or to his being a member of the Irish parliament, or to his being a government minister.
He was regularly elected to the Irish parliament and his Jewishness was never a hindrance to his being elected.
In fact his parliamentary colleague Mervyn Taylor (Labour) was also Jewish and his Jewishness was not a hindrance to him being elected to the Irish parliament.
Robert Brisco was also a Jewish member of the Irish parliament, and was a member of the IRA during the Irish War of Independence, and his Jewishness was not a hindrance to being in the IRA or to serving as a member of the Irish parliament for almost 40 years. He was also elected as Lord Mayor of Dunlin, on two occasions.
Robert Brisco's son Ben Brisco, also served as a member of the Irish parliament, again serving for almost 40 years, and he too was elected Lord mayor of Dublin. His Jewishness was not a hindrance to him holding either position.
It should be noted that during the period when the Briscos were members of the Irish parliament the 3 main parties had Jewish members elected to that parliament.
Would Mr Shatter like to educate me, since I cannot find out through various computer searches, if there are Catholic members of the Knesset, and if any have been ministers in the Israeli government, and if there are Catholic members in the 3 main Israeli political parties?
Ireland is not anti-semitic and has the right to defend itself against such accusations. Having the right to defend itself is a crucial issue, something that Israeli politicians regularly point out, so I'm shocked that you did not interview a representative of Ireland to defend itself in regard to these accusations.
Nor did Mr Shatter encourage you to do so.
Is your failure to do so a sign of you being anti-Irish?

This is a particularly nasty piece of propaganda, Ireland is critical of the Israeli governmental actions, not of Israel, israelis or Jewish people. Shatter, as a Jewish individual and ex politician, is completely misrepresenting the situation in Ireland. This is pure overblown misinterpretion that does nothing to clarify what is the reality on the ground. Ireland was seen as a soft touch for the right wing Israeli government before they got stood up too. This is just inflaming the hyperbole exactly when it's not needed. Horrific journalism

As an Irish man, with Jewish in-laws, we have absolutely nothing against Jews (either individually or collectively), however we find the actions of the Israeli state, in Gaza, South Lebenon, the West Bank and especially in the way that they continuously steal.more land through the expansion of the settlements, to be absolutely abhorrent. It reminds us of the way that we have been treated by the British for centuries. To be fair to the British, after the civil rights campaign in the North of Ireland in the 70s, a recognition that they had allowed the unionists to abuse their power for 50 years was made. The British recognised the need to remove the underlying causes for the huge support that was given to the Republican cause. This is why peace was finally negotiated in 1998. We are completely sympathetic to the Palestinian cause for these reasons.

I suppose the Irish government could ignore the International Legal system ,we could ignore the warrants , it’s interesting though that two of the Judges on the ICC were Holocaust survivors, one of the Judges Theodor Meron a holocaust survivor himself recommended the ICC seek an arrest warrant for Netanyahu after seeing the evidence presented to the court !
The Israeli courts want to see Netanyahu on other criminal charges , they are hardly Antisemites are they ?
Ireland are a small insignificant country in terms of international affairs we are an easy target for Israel. The incoming US administration won’t investigate the charges against Ireland they will assume we are AntiSemites and that will have a chilling effect on US Ireland relations , which will be a very effective warning to anyone else who might speak out against Netanjahus government.
That’s a pity given Ireland was the first country to give explicit protection under its 1937 constitution to its small Jewish population ,it was thought to be a necessary move given the rise of antisemitism in Europe at the time .
Post WW2 the systems of international law were set up to protect Civilians from attack , like the bombing of Dresden and Hiroshima .
I’m not a Lawyer but I think it’s important to protect the laws and institutions that protect civilians even if they have been pretty ineffective at doing that in recent conflicts.

We have always supported people who either have been(Jewish people) or currently are institutionally oppressed (Palestinians). We have a history as a former colony of being oppressed. This is the reason why we empathise with the plight of the Palestinian people against the extreme right wing Israeli government's actions that have resulted in the current ICJ judgements/ICC arrest warrants. @@solvingpolitics3172 Egypt, Turkey, Iran etc basically most of them because they are not stealing the land of others, or supporting terrorists, it was the Likud that supported Hamas because this made sure they never needed to make peace: In 2015, Bezalel Smotrich, currently the finance minister in Netanyahu’s government, summed up the strategy by stating, “The Palestinian Authority is a burden. Hamas is an asset.” Conservative Arab regimes allied with the United States, like those of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, followed a similar policy. For well over two decades after the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, Israel did much the same thing with the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoot Hamas in Gaza as a counterweight to the nationalist Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). This reached the point where the Israeli military occupation encouraged Brotherhood thugs to intimidate PLO supporters. Upon a visit to Israel from Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Turkish lawmaker Feyzi İşbaşaran [tr] in 1998, it was revealed that Netanyahu suggested Turkey support Hamas. Netanyahu said, "Hamas also has bank accounts for aid in banks, we help them too, you [Turkey] can help too."

There's 1 million terrified children living in gaza under constant bombardment by the Israeli occupation forces.
They have nothing but the end to look forward to. All human beings are the same, but some just can't see it.
Ian, you aren't better than anyone and avoiding the atrocities in Gaza where 20,000 kids have perished is just ludicrous and completely dishonest.
Have you considered speaking to a Palestinian child to see what their life is like or is it only certain ethnicities you rely on for human interactions?

What about Serbia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania...getting tired with this list... Spain, Poland, Bosnia, Iceland, Sweden, Albania and Slovenia. Can we add the likes of Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia - I'm always a little confused about their continental definitions as they generally get to play European football. Anyway, that's at least 15 other countries so the host clearly framed the discussion in an inaccurate way in his introduction.

Alan Shatter is a neigbhour of mine and in the past, I have donated to his electoral campaign when he was a member of Fine Gael, he is a man who has lost his way, the Irish are not anti Jewish, but we despise what the Israeli Government is doing in Gaza, just like any Imperial nation has done in the past, we should know, we were ruled by the English for 800 years and lost half our population under their rule, but we bear no ill will and are perfect neigbhours and trading partners. In essence, Israel is killing 41 thousand Palestinian's for every 1000 Israelis.. Alan Shatter was a former Minister for Justice, if Ireland was a nation that hated members of the Jewish faith, we would not have put him in such a revered and important position in our Government.

Now Netanyahu and his government we have absolutely great criticism of in fact we have condemned them for the treatment of Palestinians civilians and illegal grabbing of lands.I stand by Simon Harris and I'm proud of him to speak up, we condemn the terrorist group hamas and their actions 100% but the inappropriate response of Netanyahu and his government is criminal and against human rights, it's unhuman to the Palestine people and nobody with any morals can justify their actions, and also to your speaker you've got to talk on air ,my family is of mixed religions here in Ireland including Jewish and we've never experienced anything that he's saying ,one member of the family has a close young friend who's in custody in Israel because he won't serve his required national time in the army because he doesn't believe in what the Israeli government is doing to the people of Palestine.Dont start spreading rumours about Ireland and the Irish people for your own agenda,I stand by Simon Harris in what he said Ireland knows right from wrong
