Chatham43. Its not an odd post. A lot of what he said was complete BS. Sounded more like an Israeli politician than an Irish one to me. One of the big problems defenders of Israel have now is people don’t believe their lies anymore.
When you criticise the Saudi government’s human rights record, nobody says that’s Islamophobic. Why then is it inherently antisemitic to criticise the actions of the Israeli government?
The argument is that if you criticize Israel bombing and killing of what is now approaching 50,000 people, the majority of which being women and children, is that you are an anti-semite. This is a deliberate conflation of anti-semitism and any criticism of Israel .This is used as the Irish prime minister stated recently, is to deflect from Israel's actions.

@@chatham43 Hello again my friend, do you go along with the River Nile to the River Euphrates rhetoric of Greater Iz? I regularly march in the pro Palestine marches in London with many of my Jewish friends including holocaust survivors. We chant "From the river to the sea". Anybody and everybody I know, that expresses this sentiment, means that EVERYBODY living between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea shall have freedom, equality, dignity and justice unless it is someone referring to the Likud charter. For my part if such a state could exist I would be over the moon, if it could include justice for the Palestinians that have been brutally subjugated and subject to gross inhumanities for far, far too long.
Why Ireland? Why not South Africa, Spain, Norway, et all? I'd love to hear an example of the 'rhetoric' mentioned, but these accusers never provide any.
I think because the republic is seen as a close friend of the US, so it seems more hurtful that they'd call 'em out for bombing migrant camps, using Palestinians as human shields or denying food and water to people on the point of starvation. Usual naughty Israeli shenanigans!
Spain and Norway could still possibly be silenced with being labelled anti-semites. That won't work here so they must have figured we were a lost cause. For South Africa I'm guessing it's to do with the trial.

Ireland was seen as a soft touch for the right wing Israeli government before they got stood up too. This is just inflaming the hyperbole exactly when it's not needed. Horrific journalism

He's been desperate for attention since his political career crashed and burned. A 'politician' who thinks opening an embassy in Iran is 'supporting' that state is an idiot.
That's only because he closed 1200 police stations in Ireland when he was justice minister. His solution was to replace them with 12 mobile vans which he called 'mobile police stations'.He was a lifelong member of Fine Gael party but took umbrage with the recent comments of Harris. He should move to Israel.Ireland doesn't want him.
As an Irish person I have worked & lived in Jewish areas (Portobello & Rathmines, 1960's & 1970's) but I have never seen anyone wearing a Kippah except on a Saturday. Any work parties were held on Thursday's instead of Friday so they did not run into Saturday. There is a difference between the despicable dislike/hatred of a people for their believes/religion and the calling out of a government for their actions. The calling out of the Israeli government is not antisemitic its political differences.
As an Irish man, with Jewish in-laws, we have absolutely nothing against Jews (either individually or collectively), however we find the actions of the Israeli state, in Gaza, South Lebenon, the West Bank and especially in the way that they continuously steal.more land through the expansion of the settlements, to be absolutely abhorrent. It reminds us of the way that we have been treated by the British for centuries. To be fair to the British, after the civil rights campaign in the North of Ireland in the 70s, a recognition that they had allowed the unionists to abuse their power for 50 years was made. The British recognised the need to remove the underlying causes for the huge support that was given to the Republican cause. This is why peace was finally negotiated in 1998. We are completely sympathetic to the Palestinian cause for these reasons.
Can you explain why the actions of the Israeli state, in South Lebanon is absolutely abhorrent? (Lebanon based) Hezbollah attacked Israeli civilians on October 08 a day after the Hames attack on October 07. Was Israel not supposed to defend itself? Sounds very biased to me but of course you are not antisemitic!
Im a catholic but you as an irish man , as you say - which land are you referring to ? are you aware of international law ? when a country is attacked by any country it is allowed to defend itself - not in ireland ? the ongoing rockets fired into israel over many years by both hamas and hezbollah - in your mind these didnt happen ? the 'west bank ' was taken by israel after it was attacked in 1967 - again check rules of international law. isreal did not take lebabon but was attacked by it and gaza was gov by hamas since 2006 (no israel in there ) SO what are you talking about
@@SeanOFaininactually if you check the facts, in 8th Oct 2023 Hezbollah attacked an Israeli military base in the Shebaa farms area of Lebanon which does NOT belong to Israel. Israel are illegally occupying that area. You think civilians were there? What would civilians be doing on a military base?
As an American Jew who wants nothing to do with Israel and its horrific crimes, I’m truly happy for Ireland’s brave stance (compared to the United States’ cowardly and deplorable position).
Me neither! However, for a long time now we’ve known that if you say one thing against the Israeli government no matter the criticism, you were considered or should I say you are considered antisemitic even though it has nothing to do with their ethnicity, but the way that day Conduct themselves as a state.
If Irish children are afraid to show what religion they are for fear of being attacked, that is an example. All the nonsense in the world, and this comment section attests to that, will not erase the truth.
Totally disagree with Alan Shatter, Irish people do differentiate between Israeli Government and Jews around the world. The majority of Irish people are sick of watching the oppression of Palestinians by Israel. Israel is totally dominating the region with their brutality, I condemn Hamas for their atrocities including Oct 7th but Israel has reacted by slaughtering Palestinians indiscriminately as collective punishment, which is a war crime , it’s as simple as that.
The ADL recently published a report showing an 800% increase in anti-semitism. The ADL recently changed its definition of anti-semitism to include any criticism of the Israeli government.
That definition is essentially constructed to describe Judaism and Israel as completely intertwined. It makes anything more than the most benign criticism immediately open to the label of anti-semism beyond applied. And I don't say 'accusation of' for a reason - the label is applied the moment Israeli politicians don't like what another country says about is.
Exactly why the figures need to be taken with a grain of salt. Many outward Jews are pro palestine so I'm not sure who is "feeling" scared. Just another way to silence us. Not happening.
I suppose the Irish government could ignore the International Legal system ,we could ignore the warrants , it’s interesting though that two of the Judges on the ICC were Holocaust survivors, one of the Judges Theodor Meron a holocaust survivor himself recommended the ICC seek an arrest warrant for Netanyahu after seeing the evidence presented to the court ! The Israeli courts want to see Netanyahu on other criminal charges , they are hardly Antisemites are they ? Ireland are a small insignificant country in terms of international affairs we are an easy target for Israel. The incoming US administration won’t investigate the charges against Ireland they will assume we are AntiSemites and that will have a chilling effect on US Ireland relations , which will be a very effective warning to anyone else who might speak out against Netanjahus government. That’s a pity given Ireland was the first country to give explicit protection under its 1937 constitution to its small Jewish population ,it was thought to be a necessary move given the rise of antisemitism in Europe at the time . Post WW2 the systems of international law were set up to protect Civilians from attack , like the bombing of Dresden and Hiroshima . I’m not a Lawyer but I think it’s important to protect the laws and institutions that protect civilians even if they have been pretty ineffective at doing that in recent conflicts.
@chatham43 When scholars, international courts, international aid and charitable operations, even Israeli newspapers and some of their own citizens call out Israel for their crimes it's pretty clear they need condemning. But cool, edgy comment. You're clearly a top bloke.
Well worn, crazy propaganda and deflection tactics laid bare by Mr Shatter. Our well-renowned Irish curriculum correctly enunciates the full horrors of the Holocaust to a minute degree. We have a strong history of countering anti-Semitism as part of the historic profile of our nation. We have always supported people who either have been(Jewish people) or currently are institutionally oppressed (Palestinians). We have a history as a former colony of being oppressed. This is the reason why we empathise with the plight of the Palestinian people against the extreme right wing Israeli government's actions that have resulted in the current ICJ judgements/ICC arrest warrants. Nothing anti-Semitic about that. We support international law, end of.
Shatter has always shouted from the rooftops that he is Jewish first. As he ages, his isolation from Politics has left him bitter and prone to inventing Likud backed Drama. Like most dramas, the thicker the plot. The thicker the audience.

Alan Shatter tried to get elected to Dáil Eireann in the recent election and failed miserably. His position on Israel is well known and the Irish voters gave him their opinion on his position.
Criticism of Israel is not equivalent to dislike of Jews. Some Jewish people may feel uncomfortable but is it the actions of Israel or the legitimate criticism of Israel that is the ultimate cause of their discomfort?
The criticism of the actions of the Israeli governnent shouldn't be making any non-Israeli jews uncomfortable. Any non-Israeli jews who do feel uncomfortable about it are conflating Zionism and Judaism - which ironically is anti-semitic.
@@solvingpolitics3172 Egypt, Turkey, Iran etc basically most of them because they are not stealing the land of others, or supporting terrorists, it was the Likud that supported Hamas because this made sure they never needed to make peace: In 2015, Bezalel Smotrich, currently the finance minister in Netanyahu’s government, summed up the strategy by stating, “The Palestinian Authority is a burden. Hamas is an asset.” Conservative Arab regimes allied with the United States, like those of Jordan and Saudi Arabia, followed a similar policy. For well over two decades after the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza in 1967, Israel did much the same thing with the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoot Hamas in Gaza as a counterweight to the nationalist Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). This reached the point where the Israeli military occupation encouraged Brotherhood thugs to intimidate PLO supporters. Upon a visit to Israel from Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Turkish lawmaker Feyzi İşbaşaran [tr] in 1998, it was revealed that Netanyahu suggested Turkey support Hamas. Netanyahu said, "Hamas also has bank accounts for aid in banks, we help them too, you [Turkey] can help too."
Absolutely disgraceful misinterpretation by this charlatan of an " Irish lawyer " unsurprisingly not challenged by the pro Israeli host. Thank goodness for proper investigative journos like Matt Kennard and Owen Jones
There's 1 million terrified children living in gaza under constant bombardment by the Israeli occupation forces. They have nothing but the end to look forward to. All human beings are the same, but some just can't see it. Ian, you aren't better than anyone and avoiding the atrocities in Gaza where 20,000 kids have perished is just ludicrous and completely dishonest. Have you considered speaking to a Palestinian child to see what their life is like or is it only certain ethnicities you rely on for human interactions? Absurd show... Where's James!
Ireland does not have a pro-Palestine or anti-israel stance.... Ireland is simply pro-human Rights and pro international law. Whichever country is on those sides as Irelands support.
Alan Shatter is way off the mark here! He makes it out we are changing history books towards the atrocities during WW2. I went to Auschwitz in October and felt that horrible sense of dread and sickness over what happened to the Jewish people. Would I feel the same if I visited Gaza, yes I probably would.
Hardly an anti Israeli line if they condemn violence against innocents on both sides. The anti Israeli feeling in Ireland isn’t because of the Irish government it is due to Israeli government statements and actions.
Alan Shatter presented himself and his views to the Irish electorate at the general election last month. They were roundly rejected. Maybe this is what drives the invective.
In 2014 Alan Shatter resigned from government in disgrace after a string of controversies and failures. I'm not sure he should be lecturing anyone on morals.
I'm not following you there, Just pointing out that Alan Shatter is pro the current israeli government, which is at odds with the irish government's position and that of many Irish Jewish people
Propaganda right from the start, rather like the tactics Goebbels might have used to get people on side, phrase it in a way that immediately gets the attention of who he wants. Anti Zionist or anti Netanyahu government is not Anti-Semitism, doesn't even imply it.
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain , Greece, France Germany, Sweden, Iceland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Romania, Hungary, Finland, Portugal, Netherlands, Malta, UK and a few other European countries have embassies and diplomatic missions in Iran. However, how anti -semite was Ireland to open one in September gone...is this guy serious or is he having a laugh....
Without the live-streamed images/videos of people burning, starving & blown up etc.. there wouldn’t be so much focus on the state of Israel. Blame the government/media for blending the state of Israel with Judaism, they’re separate & should be kept that way.
Some info on Alan Shatter. As Minister for Justice in Ireland he released private privileged info on an opponent he was having a debate with on live TV . He left his party and ran as an independent. He remains un-elected.
Ireland has one of the lowest rates of antisemitic incidents per capita in the world. America, the UK and Germany dwarf Ireland in recorded cases of antisemitism…
Disappointing but unsurprising that an English person does not understand Irish history, England’s own colonial history and the nexus between the two, and the parallels between occupied Palestine and occupied Ireland.
At 1:16 he says Ireland is one of the very few European states to recognize Palestine, alongside Norway. Hmmm, is that right, is it really 'very few'... What about Serbia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belarus, Ukraine, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania...getting tired with this list... Spain, Poland, Bosnia, Iceland, Sweden, Albania and Slovenia. Can we add the likes of Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Georgia - I'm always a little confused about their continental definitions as they generally get to play European football. Anyway, that's at least 15 other countries so the host clearly framed the discussion in an inaccurate way in his introduction.

Alan Shatter is a neigbhour of mine and in the past, I have donated to his electoral campaign when he was a member of Fine Gael, he is a man who has lost his way, the Irish are not anti Jewish, but we despise what the Israeli Government is doing in Gaza, just like any Imperial nation has done in the past, we should know, we were ruled by the English for 800 years and lost half our population under their rule, but we bear no ill will and are perfect neigbhours and trading partners. In essence, Israel is killing 41 thousand Palestinian's for every 1000 Israelis.. Alan Shatter was a former Minister for Justice, if Ireland was a nation that hated members of the Jewish faith, we would not have put him in such a revered and important position in our Government.
Sorry but I just disagree with this. Israelis completely disproportionate actions against gaza is just deplorable. It needs to be called out. + Ireland is right to take the stand that it is.
Ireland and Irish people have absolutely nothing against Jewish people or Israeli people. Now Netanyahu and his government we have absolutely great criticism of in fact we have condemned them for the treatment of Palestinians civilians and illegal grabbing of lands.I stand by Simon Harris and I'm proud of him to speak up, we condemn the terrorist group hamas and their actions 100% but the inappropriate response of Netanyahu and his government is criminal and against human rights, it's unhuman to the Palestine people and nobody with any morals can justify their actions, and also to your speaker you've got to talk on air ,my family is of mixed religions here in Ireland including Jewish and we've never experienced anything that he's saying ,one member of the family has a close young friend who's in custody in Israel because he won't serve his required national time in the army because he doesn't believe in what the Israeli government is doing to the people of Palestine.Dont start spreading rumours about Ireland and the Irish people for your own agenda,I stand by Simon Harris in what he said Ireland knows right from wrong

They'd prefer to leave it open ended so you can use your imagination. Directly reporting would just prove that it's Israeli policies and not the Jewish people that Irish are upset about.
South Africa and Ireland know racism and how it feels to be brutalized by settler colonists and they have all their excuses.

It doesn’t matter what is worn or not worn, the fact that the community feels unsafe and continues to shrink reflects prejudice in Irish society.
How so?

There’s a huge difference between anti semitism and anti Zionism and anti butchery of innocent children in Gazza

Criticism of Israel is not equivalent to dislike of Jews. Some Jewish people may feel uncomfortable but is it the actions of Israel or the legitimate criticism of Israel that is the ultimate cause of their discomfort?
@nick So what should the Israeli government have done. Nothing. That wouldn't have pleased Hamas.
@Andrew-ti8hi my comment was not about what Israel should have done in response to Oct 7th, so your question is puzzling.

Disappointing but unsurprising that an English person does not understand Irish history, England’s own colonial history and the nexus between the two, and the parallels between occupied Palestine and occupied Ireland.
