  • Breadfruit taste similar to bread with a little butter. The text is similar to bread and is very filling. Breadfruit was a canoe plant which means the ancient Hawaiians brought this plant in ocean canoes over thousands of miles to Hawaii.

I noticed that bread fruit cooked green had no flavor, but once it ripened and softened it is very delicious when fried and added in with other foods. sort of like when a plantin softens and is fried. there so much more flavor.

FYI. If your breadfruit heart has sap then its not roasted yet put it back on the fire.
To check if its ready just poke the heart with your knife and see if its still sticky when it comes out.
And you would never get me to eat that white tasteless breadfruit. Its prickly or nothing for me. Next time get some ackee and saltfish with that.
Love your channel. Keep em coming.
    Nuff respect from Ja.

In Puerto Rico, breadfruit is called panapen or pana, for short. In some in-land regions it is also called mapén. Pana is often served boiled with a mixture of sauteed bacalao (salted cod fish), olive oil and onions. It is also served as tostones or mofongo. In the Dominican Republic, it is known by the name buen pan or "good bread".

When I was 4years old my neighbor and best old man taught me this he did all the time when he made this into Hawaiian Ulu poi out in the yard next to our house I would smell the smoke and run over. That was in 1959 and whenever I do this it takes me back to his gentle smiling face. He also made underground roast pig (kalua) often for parties. This gentle old Hawaiian man taught me open fire is the best and I never boil it. And you don't need to add any thing to make it taste better it's naturally sweet and yellow meat is tasty.

in philippines particularly in visayas where i came from, we call it kulo or dimas. for me best roasted when it's ripe (soft when squeezed) - roast until it becomes so black all over to make sure it's well cooked all the way through the innermost part. it's sweet and delicious...
if not ripe, we cut it into quarter size and boil it 'til its cooked, peel off the skin and remove the core, cut it further into chunks, then separately we prepare coconut milk and sugar reduce it into syrup at certain consistency, mix in the breadfruit chunks. it's yummy...
we also make it into like chips if not so ripe but almost there, we cut it into thin slices (skin and core removed of course) dry it under the sun for a day or two, then fry it. it's so good...
we also mix it with other vegetables to make a soup base dish. very nice...

We eat it boiled and served with olive oil or butter (other people add a little bit of vinegar), mashed, fried like " tostones" usually made with green plantains, fried and mashed like "mofongo", and also mix with "calabaza" (a Caribbean variety of squash) and other root vegetables ("yuca", "yautía", ñame", "malanga") in a baked dish my great grand mother called it "CAZUELA"; following the Spanish styled dish, but meatless.

In my Country in the Southern Caribbean we pick the Bread Fruit when it is Matured and we call it " Full " So when it is Full or Matured then it's picked and use for Cooking in Many Ways. If you Pick it young you can boil it with Rice to eat with other Cook Meats. If you Pick it """ Full """ you have to Roast it then peel off the Roast skin sliced up and eat with your favourite Stewed Meats like " Stewed Beef" Stewed Chicken or Roasted fish dishes etc. They make the best Chips with the Roasted left overs also. The spots/pattern on the breadfruit becomes wider and flatter and the spikes are lost when it's mature and best to eat. This is true for most species, including the one shown in this video. Best to let the fire die down then you cook it over the embers. Burning fire can char the outside while the inside is still raw. 🤗

This breadfruit is better than potatoes, we cook it in water with salt just like potatoes and then after cooked we add extra virgen olive oil I can eat it all. We cook cut it chunks and fry for a time then take the chunks out smashed not to thing and fried every chunk again just like tostones or fried plantain, before I fried I put ea.piece in salty water. I have never ever eat it that way I'm going to try it. I need to travel to PR and get some cause right they don't sale it. We called it PANAPEN, and this is SOOOO DELICIOUS.

Good video Brother... In Puerto Rico they are called Panas or Panapen. We boiled them with other starchy vegetable or fried or puddings. It true if everyone had a breadfruit tree there would be less hungry people. People in Puerto Rico have invested so many dishes with this vegetable is amazing. I make french fries and fried ball stuff with cheese. Amazing vegetable.

Ha! Just in time! I just found a breadfruit and wondered what to do with it. So, actually I'm not going to do anything with it, because I learned from your video, that it's no good anymore. It's too soft! :-(
By the way, what do you do against mosquitoes? Any survival tricks? Or are you one of those that don't feel it anymore?
Aloha back! And mahalo for all the great videos! :-)

As for mosquito repellent you gotta burn coconut meat (matured brown cobra), that's how islanders (Micros) do. Just cut cobra in half to drain water and put on fire (if husk not wet). Or take out wet husk and smash shell, toss on fire with meat still attached on shell. You need that smoke so take it off if burn too fast.....mosquitoes hate that smell, aloha!

    • @laly4man
      @laly4man 6 років тому +2

Soft breadfruit means it is fully ripe and is very sweet. Mash it up (remove the skin first), mix in a little flour (not too much that it becomes dry), add in baking powder and fry into little balls of goodness. If your mixture is too dry, drip in a little milk. When they come out hot, sprinkle with powder sugar or anything else you like. They are little round doughnut balls after all.

  • @pauldale3695

I got this recipe from Sri Lanka
Get a matured breadfruit, not ripen
peel it, do not go deeper,
cut it in to small chunks, remove the axis in the middle.
    Slice a red onion
    3 green chilies chopped
    1 tsp turmeric powder
    2 tsp red chili powder
    1 tomato chopped
    Salt
add all the ingredients with breadfruit, add water and cook it in a clay pot lid on medium flame
until it becomes very soft, this may take about20-30 mins. Then mash it to partial paste form.
Reduce flame to medium low then add some coconut milk, mix it well and cook for about 5 mins.
    Enjoy with bread.
