I lived in the Florida keys and I would find breadfruit once in a while, A friend from Nicaragua turned me on to it and I loved it, I love it ripe and green! Thank you for your presentation.
in philippines particularly in visayas where i came from, we call it kulo or dimas. for me best roasted when it's ripe (soft when squeezed) - roast until it becomes so black all over to make sure it's well cooked all the way through the innermost part. it's sweet and delicious... if not ripe, we cut it into quarter size and boil it 'til its cooked, peel off the skin and remove the core, cut it further into chunks, then separately we prepare coconut milk and sugar reduce it into syrup at certain consistency, mix in the breadfruit chunks. it's yummy... we also make it into like chips if not so ripe but almost there, we cut it into thin slices (skin and core removed of course) dry it under the sun for a day or two, then fry it. it's so good... we also mix it with other vegetables to make a soup base dish. very nice...
In Puerto Rico, breadfruit is called panapen or pana, for short. In some in-land regions it is also called mapén. Pana is often served boiled with a mixture of sauteed bacalao (salted cod fish), olive oil and onions. It is also served as tostones or mofongo. In the Dominican Republic, it is known by the name buen pan or "good bread".
Breadfruit has been stuck in my head. Since reading the book, "Mutiny on the bounty". It was mentioned a lot in the book. I had recently watched some of your videos and this one was recommended. You show stuff in your videos that is not well known on the mainland. So this time around I subbed.
I Wii Teach yuo how to put fire.to.init..First.you..make.holl..in. Your place and put into.. jackfruit..Then close full.. with fire Woodsl lots..now you keep 🔥.to After 30Minits...you can see...... What happened...
FYI. If your breadfruit heart has sap then its not roasted yet put it back on the fire. To check if its ready just poke the heart with your knife and see if its still sticky when it comes out. And you would never get me to eat that white tasteless breadfruit. Its prickly or nothing for me. Next time get some ackee and saltfish with that. Love your channel. Keep em coming. Nuff respect from Ja.
Oh my mouth is watering. I love roasted breadfruit . Introduced to me by my late husband who was from Jamaica, hence I'm familiar with alot of the tropical fruits n vegetables plus provisions like yellow yams, edoes and the like.
I noticed that bread fruit cooked green had no flavor, but once it ripened and softened it is very delicious when fried and added in with other foods. sort of like when a plantin softens and is fried. there so much more flavor.
When I was 4years old my neighbor and best old man taught me this he did all the time when he made this into Hawaiian Ulu poi out in the yard next to our house I would smell the smoke and run over. That was in 1959 and whenever I do this it takes me back to his gentle smiling face. He also made underground roast pig (kalua) often for parties. This gentle old Hawaiian man taught me open fire is the best and I never boil it. And you don't need to add any thing to make it taste better it's naturally sweet and yellow meat is tasty.
In Thailand we called it Sa-Ke (pronounced like Japanese rice rum Sake) we peeled the green skin out, cut the core then added sugar and boiled it for an hour or two, eat with salted coconut milk very yummy.
In Zanzibar we cook it in various ways, either we cook it in coconut milk and serve it with fried fish, you can also cook in oil as chips with garlic, salt and pepper. or just bake it.
Oh my goodness, I'm from Barbados and I LOVE breadfruit, especially the "yellow meat" variety. Yellow meat meaning the colour of the flesh inside. They're sweet and buttery tasting. Gosh I wish I could find them much easier in my side of Florida.
I am Canadian but i have had breadfruit in Jamaica it was big like a basketball and tasted like mashed potatoes when i put butter on it very yummy i thought

Yummy breadfruit dish is that when breadfruit is boiled in fresh coconut milk. Pork or shrimp can be added too for flavour. If breadfruit is not available, an unripe jackfruit will do. Yum!
I am from Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 We called it here, PANAPÉN or simply, PANA. We eat it boiled and served with olive oil or butter (other people add a little bit of vinegar), mashed, fried like " tostones" usually made with green plantains, fried and mashed like "mofongo", and also mix with "calabaza" (a Caribbean variety of squash) and other root vegetables ("yuca", "yautía", ñame", "malanga") in a baked dish my great grand mother called it "CAZUELA"; following the Spanish styled dish, but meatless.
Try eat Roasted Breadfruit like that with coconut milk....not the one from the can but the milk straight from the coconut meat....fresh!...it's so delicious...better than eating it with butter
We call that in Puerto Rico "Pana". It's rich boiled with codfish and onion, tomatoes and olive oil, also in toast fritters with garlic and little salt; we make pudding also in the oven. Very rich. In soups too.
In goa (india ) its a very common vegetable and called "nil fanas" .locals here peel off the skin and than cut it into medium size pieces .than apply red chilli powder, salt & keep 5 minutes for marination.than applly suji (form of coarse rice) and fry on a pan with sprinkling little oil.it tastes yummy !

Very delicious , we had a 200 feet high tree and size of a basket ball fruit in my back yard. sliced and fry it,boil it in chunks; and when its soft you can make bread out of it.
We have 3 big tress of breadfruit at home. I basically love cooking it with coconut or frying it. Really delicious. Missing the old tropical life in my hometown.
Ha! Just in time! I just found a breadfruit and wondered what to do with it. So, actually I'm not going to do anything with it, because I learned from your video, that it's no good anymore. It's too soft! :-( By the way, what do you do against mosquitoes? Any survival tricks? Or are you one of those that don't feel it anymore? Aloha back! And mahalo for all the great videos! :-)
connectingTheDots I'm not really bothered by mosquitoes. I would say maybe a diet high in vinegar and spices could help deter mosquitoes. Shoooots brah!!! Mahalo
As for mosquito repellent you gotta burn coconut meat (matured brown cobra), that's how islanders (Micros) do. Just cut cobra in half to drain water and put on fire (if husk not wet). Or take out wet husk and smash shell, toss on fire with meat still attached on shell. You need that smoke so take it off if burn too fast.....mosquitoes hate that smell, aloha!
Soft breadfruit means it is fully ripe and is very sweet. Mash it up (remove the skin first), mix in a little flour (not too much that it becomes dry), add in baking powder and fry into little balls of goodness. If your mixture is too dry, drip in a little milk. When they come out hot, sprinkle with powder sugar or anything else you like. They are little round doughnut balls after all.
This breadfruit is better than potatoes, we cook it in water with salt just like potatoes and then after cooked we add extra virgen olive oil I can eat it all. We cook cut it chunks and fry for a time then take the chunks out smashed not to thing and fried every chunk again just like tostones or fried plantain, before I fried I put ea.piece in salty water. I have never ever eat it that way I'm going to try it. I need to travel to PR and get some cause right they don't sale it. We called it PANAPEN, and this is SOOOO DELICIOUS. 🍈🍈🍈🍈🍈🍈🍈🍈
Before the do these videos , why don't they do some research or asked for info from people ,GOSH I missed them days. By the way it was roasted, why didn't he take a slice and eat, the proof of the pudding is in the eating , how then can you say it's delicious if you don't taste it . My friend that breadfruit want more. Fire

or....u can cut them into long pieces first and then slice them directly into boiling oil in pan....and u get crisp...same concept as making potato crisp
Thank you ABH!,. So they do taste like potatoes?..
Apparently they taste like bread and butter
Taste like fresh bread + fluffy potatoes, slightly buttery.
boil it and ad salt or the seasoning you love.

By the way, what do you do against mosquitoes? Any survival tricks? Or are you one of those that don't feel it anymore?
Aloha back! And mahalo for all the great videos! :-)
connectingTheDots I'm not really bothered by mosquitoes. I would say maybe a diet high in vinegar and spices could help deter mosquitoes. Shoooots brah!!! Mahalo
connectingTheDots when it's ripe or soft you can still roast it!!!! try it !!!
Ah thank you! Good tip! I will try that next time I "find" one!
The amazonian jungle has lots too, mostly near highways (rivers).
Breadfruit
Fish
Dasheen bush
Coconut milk
Yam

Yummy
bread fruit - i never knew such a thing existed, and to think it really tastes like bread is even more amazing!
its so good
This breadfruit is better than potatoes, we cook it in water with salt just like potatoes and then after cooked we add extra virgen olive oil I can eat it all.
