Homestead Harvest: Lychee

- Lychee is one of my favorite fruits and grows well on a Hawaii homestead. It is a tropical tree native to China, where cultivation is documented from 1059AD. Watch out for the seed and enjoy.

Hello! I come from China. My hometown is one of the origins of lychee. Now it's harvest season. I don’t know if you know. What I want to tell you is that lychee also have many varieties and each taste is difference. The lychee you show in the video we call bingtangang in the local which is precocious one. My favorite lychee are nuomizhi, feizixiao and guiwei. All of names are their local names. Lychee is so juicy and we should eat it when it's fresh otherwise it will lose the special taste. Oh, I want to eat now!
Thanks for shareing!
In hawaii i believe this variety is called kai mana
The other 2 varieties ive seen on island have been called cheramoya(not sure of the spelling)
And bosworth
They are wonderful!
I agree totally about eating Lychee when it's fresh. The fruit lose its smell and juice as days go by. Sometimes, it has the fermented flavor and not pleasant.
How do you feel about Hong Kong
Ohh my hometown’s is zhengcheng lychee
I’m amazed at how many different foods you have just in your backyard
gotta mix it up
Very nice and beautiful Lychee. Love it very nice fruits thank you for sharing.
Lol I miss home soo much!! Your video made me smile. I’m growing a lychee in a container lol
Gabe,You have it made living in Hawaii,Lychee looks like red plums on those branches.I enjoy watching videos of Hawaii,Thank You so much,Michael in the States (WV).

Awesome homestead sir thank you Gabe for sharing.
A heartfelt shout-out to you, my friend! Your videos are not just content; they're a reflection of your passion and unique storytelling style. And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.
Fantastic and lovely presentation Friend thanks for so much friend
Lovely and nice presentation of litchi plant fruit
Hello from Florida! Thank you so much for the tip about leaving them on the cut branch to continue to ripen!! We have trouble with birds taking them if we let them tree- ripen to dark red! Grateful for the tip!!
I love lychee my uncle lives in Homestead and he has 10 acres and we go up every June and July to pick as many as we want for free they're amazing and very sweet.
Homestead what? Florida?
such an amazing fruit. they are so juicy and sweet. almost like a juicey grape without the skin in texture, but a sweeter, brighter flavor.
Indeed, I did enjoy it, thanks, Gabe. Apparently, you put those seeds in your cheek pouch. I wish you'd sell me some of your homemade chocolate and some of that wonderful fruit with which you've been making my mouth water. :-)
Gabe, got turned onto your channel, when you made the chocolate video with Gary. Gary and I worked together in an Oregon winery, before he moved to Hawaii. He and Cheryl are in Colorado, just talked to him on phone the other day. Really enjoy this channel, and your work. By the way, the best gewurtztraminer wine smells just like lychee!
Gary talked a lot about that winery. It's good to hear stories about old school ingenuity and ruggedness. Thank you for watching.
Such a beautiful tree! Lychee is one of my favourite fruits as well! But i've never tried a truly fresh ones... The downside of living in Sweden. But we do get them fresh (ish) when they're in season and sometimes canned.
Zetsuki nothing like fresh lychee from the tree you'll have to come visit Hawaii
Never heard of the bell symbol thing til' now. Love lychees!

I just tried Lychee today and WOOOOOW my new favourite fruit it is 😂
I have a question I planted lychee and it's starting to grow... I live in USA so I was wonder will it be okay in the snow?
I am looking for some tips to care lychee. like additional nutrition, pest control, different chemical spray at different fruit developmental stages.
Do we have to prune litchi?
Can you tell me about the thing you were using to harvesting those lychees? I need one for my fruit trees
awesome! keep em coming!
looks really good. We don't get many fresh lychee fruits here in my part of Ohio

FYI. In hudson fl. Any idea on place to get a starter tree with active fruit
Do you have to grow these in a mountainous part of Hawaii? Or will they grow near sea level?

Do you know how lucky you are?? I only wish I could live in a place like this but oh no I'm cursed to live in Minnesota where we have not seen the sun in days. so do you sell wholesale or know of any farms I could buy from. just wondering.? I shop the Asian markets, but the food is trash, can't even find sweet plantain anymore.
Ask your Asian market if they could carry them. Looks like they are in season.
Unfortunately lychee do not continue to ripen once picked
This means they must be shipped and refridgerated within about a day, 2 can be ok depending on the fruit, 3 is pushing it
So shipping from hawaii to minnesota would not be a cost efficient way to recieve them.
Though if you have the ability to take a month or 2 away from home, there are many work trade opportunities on big island that could allow your stay here to be very inexpensive.
Minnesota is beautiful. Fall leaves and snow in winter. I live in Florida which I love too. Be happy where you are. Every place has its advantages and disadvantages.
First of all humans should only be in Minnesota between May and August
secondly you're invited to Florida
but third if you want to stay in Minnesota you can build a greenhouse and grow tropical plants such as lychee right there in your yard.
Omggggg loveeee lychee! Im living in Cabramatta in Sydney suburb Australia. We can get lychee easy here when in season. But..they are a bit expensive. I could eat a kg in 1 sitting haha!
They look a lot better fresh off the tree than when they are on the shelf here in Canada. Do you try to preserve some, or are they an enjoy while they are here fruit? Thank you for the video, Gabe
shovelhead8 lychee taste change after pick from tree 3days . When put in fridge ,turn from red to brown. Hope u can try them fresh :)
you rock!
how many trees do you have?
Are you in Kauai? When is the lychee season there? I will visit Kauai in the first week of June, is it possible to find lychee there?
I Have A question Plz: Lychee Or Chicko?
I started the tree from Lychee seed, I put 5 in the dirt and they all came up and growing leaves now. Make sure you have good soil and it will grow...
How is it today? From what i know it takes so many years for lychee tree to grow fruit
@@giftycustom5560it does but it sure would be worth it
Do they plant durian trees in Hawaii

Uncle Lar island life LOL mahalo brah
These are so good 😊
Cagama123 , I agree they're delicious one of my favorite
Occasionally the Vietnam store in our neighborhood offers these. They are juicy, sweet, and floral tasting, quite exotic, with a large seed inside. The seed is very tannic and I dont' know whether it can be made edible. Rambutan is very similar.
Amazing👍
Lychee or mangosteen? Which do you prefer and how do they differ in flavor?
Men, it is delicious, lychee, longan…everything taste so much better in Hawaii. Just came back from my vacation, and already missing it, love Puna.
Irina Harder This is something I always try to convey to family. Island fruit is just infinitely better. The ones that always hit me hardest are the bananas. After eating island bananas, I swear that mainland bananas taste pretty much like moist sawdust...
Yap, mass production never tastes good. I grew up on a small farm in germany. And than we moved to a big city, and I just never understood how people can eat those plastic-ie veggies. But I am done with that, I want the real thing.
Irina Harder nice!! Hawaii is Magic. Mahalo for watching
How many can you eat per day? Is it true that they are dangerous in large amounts?
great vid greetings from germany:)
Fabian Herr Aloha!! Mahalo for stopping by

Hey! Gabe, why don’t you do a video on “Rambutans” am sure someone grows them over in Hawaii!!

I could kill for a bucket of lychee right now😂cool video
I only just tried my first one about a month ago, but it was yellow, I have not tried the red ones yet.
Paul Smith how'd you like it was a good?
Hallo! Nice vid! I wonder if you can help me with a promblem with my lychee tree...its about one meter high ,i grow it in Greece, and its having lychees that fell off the tree after two, three weeks growing :( is this a watering problem? Especially at summer with temperatures almost 40 degrees celcius i water it day by day...
fruit falls off cuz of hard rain mostly. what are you feeding it?
H.I.S Survival we dont have a lot of rains during summer.what i use is a mix of nitrogen, phosphurus, sulfur but not so often( once per six months).is there anything more appropiate to help?
Isnt it a subtropical fruit? here in Guangdong, china grown many lychee, its hot n extreme humid in summer. Temp 30-35, humidity >90%

I love lychee. It's got a tangier, fruitier taste than longan and rambutan. Always gotta grab a bag at the farmers market. :-) Can't wait to grow my own. Three months until I finally get to be a Puna lava pioneer. Can you hook me up with some starts?
Aardaerimus D'Aritonyss I don't have any lychee starts. I do have connections to all sorts of different trees and also you can go to the Farmers Market they sell fruit trees for a reasonable price. Hit me up when it's time and I possibly could have a plethora interesting choices. Mahalo
H.I.S Survival Sounds great, Gabe. Mahalo! Your lychee is pretty good sized. Did you get lucky with some soil depth, or does it actually grow that big in native cracks and fissures in the pahoehoe?
Aardaerimus D'Aritonyss here in Pune you're lucky to have 6" of soil and this tree is growing in a natural dip still unconcerned about it falling over. After it fruits I will prune it heavily on the side that it's leaning
Aardaerimus D'Aritonyss are the seeds safe to eat? Are the seeds large?

I remember eating these in Guatemala and Mexico when I went to visit my family. I was confused about what these were because I never seen these in Florida and my cousin handed me one , I thought it was a joke or something lol than I seen him eat one , I tried it and I loved them and I can’t find any here in Florida 😭
Lychee is all over Manatee county. People grow them in their yards next to their citrus trees. If you are in central or south Florida, somebody's growing them. I found a new one last week. Now I need to get permission..
OMG, i love those. but they are so expensive in where i live. luxury fruits.
Konata Izumi 1$ 1 kilogam in Vietnam. So cheap :)))
please you trying Takop fruit. in thaland
I will
Where in hi is this

I love lychees, but they don't grow in Canada; for obvious reasons. I loved seeing how they grow, and how they are harvested. Of course the ones I get in Toronto probably come from an industrial farm somewhere in the tropical part of Asia,
Go to China! There are many different kinds of lychee. love it much
Coldasiceprincezz you are even more lucky dan me i live in Denmark where the sun hasn’t been here for months!!
its been raining here a ton no sun for 2 months
Got to get some of those. Hilo market maybe?

What does lychee taste like? it looks delicious!!
I’m missing out I’ve never had a lychee
It tastes kinda like but sweeter than juicy peach and water melon, with texture similar to jelly.
My home town have alot of lychee but now every replace with orange
How are your plants doing. Aren't you close to the gas? Oh my, I really hope your plants are ok.
I make a video on that.
The flavour in my humble opinion is like a pine favoured mango.
Is that my favourite fruits
I had lychee flavoured jelly belly jelly beans and they are out of this world I would so love to try the real thing are lychees available in the UK
Stephanie Gouldson quite rare to get but yea they are possible to get here in the uk, best place to look is in asian markets, they have any type of fruit you can think of there😋
