In reference to 1:30:05 - Saren downloaded the information he needed from the Beacon (signified by when he was glowing and floating in front of it). Afterwards he ordered the Geth to set up bombs and blow up the Beacon and the whole colony. Shepherd and crew diffuse the bombs and then Shepherd sees a vision from the Beacon as well, causing it to explode.
Saren literally used the beacon. It’s in the cutscene. Saren floats up in the air in front of the beacon. It was painful to watch them not understand how that worked.
I LOVE JOE JUBA! !!! All these former GI folk contributing to Minnmax is just heaven! All of my favorite people getting back together! Now, if we could persuade Dan Tack to drop by, it would be perfect! Much love!
The soundtrack for this game is so incredibly good. The music that plays when Shephard becomes a Spectre does such a good job of portraying just how important that moment is. I'm new to the series and I immediately understood just how special that appointment was for humanity.
That intro was amazing and I love me some Joe Juba! After listening to this 3 hour discussion, I realized that I could listen to them talk about ME all day. I know its ridiculous but I wanted them to keep going.
This was a delight, I’m absolutely engrossed in Mass Effect 1 right now. It’s insane to think it came out 14 years ago, meaning at the time I was 8 years old!!! I’m 22 now, but I remember vividly the night it came out, watching my older sister create her character and thinking, “Wow, they’ve done it. Graphics can’t get any better than this.” Playing it now is filling me with all this nostalgia I didn’t know I had.
That's so cool. I was about 18 when it first came out in 2007. Now 32. Glad this trilogy is making it's way into the collections of people who missed out the first time around.
I absolutely love the dynamic between Joe and Sarah, they're both super articulate and respectful. It feels like I watched them go from strangers to old friends in less than a few hours! Kudos to Ben for always putting together a great panel
What was that opening?! Holy smokes. Just jumping in now, but I am looking forward to this. In regards to the comments about how amazing the voice acting is, Jennifer Hale's youtube channel (just her name) has the "Cast and Crew Reunion" from just a couple days ago.... really, really worth a watch.
Hate to double dip comments BUT: Saren got the information from the beacon and then rigged explosives to blow it up: he's not upset that it was destroyed, he's upset that Shepard used it.
I have played Mass Effect for almost 9 years, it is by far my favorite game lol. I'm not into podcasts, so I've never heard a podcast of the game before. But this video is very enjoyable and I love seeing other people get so excited and enjoy talking about it, because almost everyone I talk to doesn't know this game 🙃 Keep up the great work 🙏
What a crew! Surprised to see ol' Joe Juba show up, especially with no big exit interview that Minnmax is sort of known for at this point. Fabulous surprise! Mass Effect is neat, I finally played and beat the trilogy for the first time during lockdown.
Regarding Sheps age, In ME1 Shephard is a Lieutenant Commander, (equivalent to Major in Army rank), Assuming the Systems Alliance is similar to our military, Shephard went to college or a officer academy at 18/19, graduating ~4 years later and getting commissioned as an Ensign at 22/23, (since they seem to use Navy ranks only for officers, and not Second Lieutenant) Shephard could conceivably be a fresh O-4 (Lieutenant Commander) by age 29 if their career was as meteoric as implied (and depending on your background choice, shep also may have gotten the equiv. of modern day Medal of Honor, that helps, and being N7 qualified is likely a career booster as well.
Hey am I the odd one out for never jumping on the Jennifer voice acting train? Ive played all the mass effect games several times over and I thought id try fem Shep with the collection.. but as soon as I started up the character creation screen I picked male Shep without a 2nd thought.
Don’t worry about it, there’s been a bit of revisionist history with Mass Effect where people act like Femshep is the only one worth talking about. I googled it and found a GI article from when the series was new and BioWare admitted 18% of players chose Femshep.
Tbf I replayed recently having always done maleshep when I originally played and I think femshep as paragon and maleshep as renegade is defo the best way to go.
Best OST song is the track, of the same name “C-Cec Academy”, while in C-Sec Academy. I love it so so much and now have it on repeat while driving the Mako.
1:08:34 Kudos for giving credit to Mark Meer as well. Yes, Jennifer Hale did great, but Meer did an awesome job as Shepard too. IMHO there isn't a bad voice acting performance in the series. How important that was for the overall quality of the game is underrated. Writing, acting and music were all top notch in Mass Effect. The arts matter, and this is where BioWare, at their best, shined, and have yet (IMO) to be equaled.
I don't understand Joe's complaint with the Citadel. I feel he's being too nitpicky. I'm delighted that we got so much freedom within the Citadel, along with the vast amount of content to discover. In later games, the Citadel is extremely restricted and vapid. One visit to the citadel in ME2 & ME3 and it's as if you've experienced it a hundred times because it's so sparse in content. There is barely anything to experience and there isn't any mystique behind it. I love how multi-dimensional the Citadel is in ME1 and there is always something new to discover throughout the game. It lends the location additional purpose. The Citadel in ME2 and ME3 are rudimentary and entirely forgettable.
Thanks for reading my comment, Ben! I'll be sure to write in with the continuing adventures of War Criminal Shepard, the most inept Spectre, if I accidentally do anything else hilariously stupid.
I hadn’t fully appreciated when I played these games as a young teen just how special and timeless they are. This is the definitive sci-fi epic video game story in my opinion. It’s mind blowing how in depth the lore is and to know it’s a fully original IP is an absolute credit to the writing team, it’s as lore-rich as Star Wars or LOTR.
2:14:25 You get this information from Wrex. He explains that a Quarian had data linking Saren with the Geth. She went to Fist, who went to Saren rather than the Shadow Broker. Hence Fist betrayed the Shadow Broker. Which was the reason for Wrex's contract.
Alright after watching you guys since the G.I days I finally made a Patreon account and sub at the Podcast Feed Tier Redownloaded Discord and sign back in and man yeah such a warm welcome right off the bat Feels like home
Joe, if you play on PS5, pick "quality mode", not "framerate mode". On PS5 "framerate mode" is 1440p 60fps. "Quality mode" is 4k 60fps. So the fps are 60 in both modes on PS5, but you get a higher resolution in quality. (Only on PS4 "Quality mode" is 30fps)
Mass Effect 1 is the best narrative of the trilogy. For older games, i dont mind the aged graphics because i find them so charming, and i appreciate their artistic and novel value.
2:36:20 One of the things I found very funny about Avina is when you ask "You needed the Krogan to stop the Rachni, you needed the Turians to stop the Krogan, who's going to stop the Turians." To which Avina responds with her usually "I am an AI construct" spiel, but then pointedly says "The Turians are a Council Race, they are not a threat to the galaxy." It seems Avina is allowed opinions when they're the right opinion.

watching this now, it's funny how it seemed like Sarah was getting bothered by Joe complimenting the male voice actor over Hale in regards to the renegade playthrough. Like she seemed to want to jump in so bad and defend Hale's honor.
Just finished watching/listening and I can't wait to dive back into the game this weekend! This really was a perfect crew between Sarah's VO/Bioware expertise, Joe's vast knowledge on Mass Effect as a whole, Leo's first full playthrough, and Hanson as the steadfast anchor. And that intro! My first time playing Mass Effect 1 was the summer before I started high school, so it really has been interesting seeing how it hits as an adult now
I was thinking about how old Shephard is. Some of the dialogue definitely gave me the feeling they were younger than 30. Hit different since i just turned 30 🤣 But also works. Lots of people left their marks on the world earlier rather than later in life. I think Americas founding fathers were pretty young. MLK was in his 20s when he was leading for civil rights.
I did my shepherd with the cannon male look-a-like but made everything else different. Playing all those years ago I did earthborn, war hero, vanguard. This time I chose colonist, sole survivor, sentinel. If I play again I’ll do a female renegade.
Do the deepest dive on the whole trilogy you cowards!!! But seriously, I usually just listen to the podcast version but this was a great video to watch, keep up the great work MinnMax!
Leo not really feeling it so far is equivalent to a 40 year old dad showing his 10 year old son Star Wars 1977 and the kid thinking it’s dumb. You can’t teach nostalgia!
Dang I should've commented I'm team kaiden all the way I really am interested in the lore with his m2 implant and how he comments on the statue making a vibrating sound when you walk past it on the citadel! First time player so maybe it amounts to nothing but yeah he's intriguing me right now.
I played through this segment and a little beyond. More than any other game I’ve played, something feels off about the combat, weapon upgrades, etc. Can’t put my finger on it. Just an uneasy feeling I don’t quite know what I’m doing. The abilities seem to do nothing 80% of the time.
I played the original Mass Effect back when it came out and then I played the second one when it came out but never finished it (never played the 3rd one). So I basically played 1 and a half ME games. Loved the original back in the day, but I remember not liking the second one as much, because you were not able to explore planets freely like in the first game. I think I was looking more for a No Mans Sky like game, than for what ME actually was. I now started ME1 again and obviously you can see its age and I will probably like 2 or 3 more today. The combat doesn't feels, honestly, terrible. But the characters are still interesting. And I hope the combat gets better in the sequels. I played the original as male Shepard and I played the whole Citadel part with male Shepard again, but I kind of felt turned off by his performance. Obviously the dead pan look on his face, which is obviously because of the age of the game, but also the voice acting of male Shepard at least in ME1 sounds very bored and emotionless. Back in the day I didn't care much, but now... So, I started the game again as Femshep. And I actually didn't like the standard face, but I was surprised to see that I was actually able to build a very good looking custom female Shepard (which was absolutely impossible with male Shepard, you had to play standard face). And yes, Jennifer Hale's performance is better, while also not perfect IMO, but definitely better. But my Shepard actually looks kinda cute now and I'm enjoying myself haha. The only question is, if it can hold my attention for 3 games. Probably unlikely, but I hope so. The world is really cool.
Yeah when I saw that in the description I said "Wait a minute" out loud, then went and searched online. March 29th was his last week at GameInformer, here's the tweet he sent out at the time: twitter.com/Joejuba/status/1376567762852675587
@@RyderTZ thanks, seems a bit weird that he left without having something else lined up. Makes me suspicious and sad that now I'll never get the Tuba Jack show. That's a show i made up where Dan tack and Joe juba talk rpgs.
It was never in Mass Effect 1. It is still in the sequels but all the DLC items have been integrated into the game naturally. You can buy them at various shops throughout the game. Same thing with the story expansions... they unlock at the appropriate time during the game.
2:14:00 - that's exactly what my problem was with Final Fantasy XIII-2. Some random NPC says some throwaway line and Noel and Serah jumps to page long conlcusion with their monologue that why that thing happened and what to do next. It's a sign of bad writing. I kinda liked that game, the visuals are top notch, but the pacing, story and writing was just terrible. And the whole game felt empty. But this is not about FFXIII-2, I just felt Hanson phrased perfectly my feelings about FFXIII-2. Back to Mass Effect :)
What, they don't understand what "the Mass Effect" means? Mass Relays affect objects biotically, to reduce their physical "mass" (basically weight but there's more to it) and send you through a mass-corridor. So there's a link of complete masslessness between two Mass Relays. In essence, you warp instantaneously because you are "nothing" in that moment. Your everything is reduced to so little weight that it can instantly go from point to point where there's a Mass Relay link. Biotics is also Mass Effect, that's why biotics send enemies floating weightlessly.
1:41:10 - Anderson looks like he has some skin problems or burned. Is it really that bad in the game or just this tiny little stamp makes it look weird?

I miss my dragon age armor for pre ordering
I think it’s actually there, but it’s only in the second and third games!
It was never in Mass Effect 1. It is still in the sequels but all the DLC items have been integrated into the game naturally. You can buy them at various shops throughout the game. Same thing with the story expansions... they unlock at the appropriate time during the game.
I could literally listen to Sarah Elmaleh talk allllll day.
Sarah Elmaleh's facial expressions are amazing.
I'm curious: do you think the voice actor/race issue is applicable to Kratos in the GoW reboot? Not trying to be a jerk, just curious.
Prepare for some pretzels
@@freeMHan11 Im afraid I don't know what that means.
I have never played as a female shepard and I never will. Shepard is me, I'm not a girl. The male voice is really good.
That girl in video sounds like AI. She talks so fast like a robot lol.
Time to sign up for fake YT accounts and have them run this video non stop for weeks to get that million view count.
1:41:10 - Anderson looks like he has some skin problems or burned. Is it really that bad in the game or just this tiny little stamp makes it look weird?
The deepest dive into a game.......one of the panelist hasn't even played it.
