Literally waiting to watch this b4 playing ME2 so I could know the start stop points for the next game and how long I had to do it. It pains to know this did not happen. I'm sure between e3 n summer vacations coming its too much to do but dammit like the Reapers we demand it 🖖🙏👍
I just about stumbled out of my seat hearing Ben has only played the trilogy with Wrex dead. Trying not to spoil future games, but race relations including the Krogan are a big aspect.
Im sure the deepest dives are a lot of work and ive watched and loved them all. But i would be at a loss if i didnt voice the want for Me2 and ME3 deepest dive. I'm already a patreon supporter but I would gladly throw more money to whatever will make that happen. Love you MinnMax!
The end credit song is amazing!! I was very pleased to see (and hear) when they got the same band for mass effect 3 end credits too. A great dive as always!
I know this is only ME1 but I could not agree more with Joe when he talked about ME3 and how that entire game is an ending to this story not just the last 15 minutes. ME3 is also my favorite in the trilogy and I cannot wait to replay it. The way 1 sets up the universe and scope of the narrative is truly amazing though. Its just hardcore sci fi at its very best
We all know everyone's going to continue the trilogy so why not deepest dive it? It'd also good to hear Leo's opinion on 2 and 3. He was so quiet in the first two episodes because he wasn't into it until the end it seemed.
Joe: It's explained that the combined forces of the galaxy could destroy Sovereign (that's why he needs a back door onto the citadel), but it wasn't certain that they could do it before he opened up the citadel relay.
Sovereign conversation was DEFINITELY one of the highlights of ME1 for me... Along with the Wrex confrontation, Citadel attack finale, and credits music of course!
2:03:40 There's a little bit more to it than that. The council is replaced by Humans if you're a majority renegade character. If you're a majority paragon character, it's replaced by a new council made of multiple species.
I am late to the party, but just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Ben was a great moderator and Joe and Sarah contributed many insightful and entertaining thoughts about the game. The conversation was lively, and natural. However, for the same (somewhat sadistic) reason that watching videos of people eating really bad tasting food is popular, watching Leo Vader suffer through this series was also entertaining. So much so that I'd happily tune into a live stream of Leo being forced to play ME2 and ME3. :)
a big thing that i kinda forgot that help put Wrex and Krogan into perspective is that they seem to live longer than the Asari or don't even die from ageing. i think wrex is meant to be like 1000 years old which is why he is more introspective than most. but yeah having only even half beaten the game previously in the end i thought it was great but the whole virmire and ending section espically really helps bump it up into that great teritory. i'm well into 2 now and havening beaten that before i am loving it so much... Thank God for Variety.
Sarah is somewhat incorrect regarding the First Contact war; humans were opening mass relays willy nilly yes, but had NOT YET met an alien race; the Turians saw the violations and chose to open fire first without making another form of contact.
Loved Sarah's comments and insights throughout (MVP!), but, yeah. I was arguing with my computer screen when she said this too. Humans had no idea they were doing anything wrong, were never told not to do what they were doing, and, from the human perspective, the Turians DID just attack us immediately for no apparent reason. Add humanities experience with the Batarians in the Skyllian Blitz and you can clearly see that Ashley is not a 'space racist.' As a soldier, she's has taken on the responsibility of protecting humanity from danger, which, so far, has already included 2 races attacking us, one with a sucker punch out of nowhere. If she was a 'space racist' she'd be all about Cerberus. She hates Cerberus. At the point ME1 begins, humanity (AND Shepard) has more reason to be extremely wary in their dealings with other races than most players realize, I think. That doesn't mean that we can't eventually count aliens among our friends and allies, that's a big part of the journey Shepard and humanity takes over the span of this series, but at the start, humanity has good reasons to be wary.
Truly enjoyed this deep dive on the start of my favourite trilogy of games, 4 different perspectives and choices throughout is why I love this series. Absolutely bonkers to me that anyone would let Wrex die but then that’s the alternate playthrough joy! Played this trilogy 6 times and still finding alternative dialogue and decisions! Voicing my vote for Mass Effect 2 deep dive whenever possible Big hugs all
Awesome Deepest Dive! I’m just catching up now after rolling credits on ME3 last night. The Legendary Edition was my first time playing the Mass Effect Trilogy and I absolutely loved it! I’m obviously aware of BioWare’s stellar reputation and was a big fan of KOTOR but trying to be a realist, I went in with my expectations tempered and fully expected Mass Effect to be great but ultimately unable to live up to such lofty hype. I’m very pleased to say that Mass Effect was every bit as special as everyone says and in fact it exceeded my expectations of how good it was! It’s not a perfect game or series by any means but it’s up there for me now as one of my favourite series of all time! A simply phenomenal experience! Would love to see you do Deepest Dives for ME2 and 3 but totally understand if you can’t spare the time or feel you’d just be going over similar ground. I’m off to give Andromeda a go to help me come down from my Mass Effect high. What an incredible series!
Great Deepest Dive, you should seriously consider do ME2, is by far the best game of the three, the best stories and the best characters. I also want to see Leo's reaction to the game.
Please do the DD on the whole trilogy!! I just finished ME 1 on LE and am now about 15 hrs into ME2. No one else inches my craving for deep ME analysis like you guys!! You are the only hope!
What a fun wrap up! Loved Sarah’s “You’re trying to play a game against people who made the board” and Joe’s “That problem is solved.” Thanks for another great Deepest Dive!
Im literally waiting to play ME2 and 3 until these guys make videos for them. I never beat 3 so I'm eager to go back and replay (with a guide) alongside these fine folks. Hopefully they drop them sooner rather than later I know the community is eagerly awaiting them. Great job with ME1 btw I watched all 9 hours haha.
I've been to the California Great America theme park a few times and knew Mass Effect: New Earth was there. I'm surprised the gang did not! That particular theater attraction has had a few fascinating things over the last two decades, a Spongebob thing was there before Mass Effect, and before that was James Bond: License to Thrill. That experience was incredible, a first person 007 adventure where I specifically remember jumping a motorcycle onto a moving train chasing the baddie. The pre-show was hosted by Desmond Llwelyn as Q too. It seems like there's only one video on the internet about License to Thrill, but it will live in my heart forever.
As far as the being more of a Captain question. It got me thinking. Considering all of the sci-fi influences, it would have been great to have some Battlestar Galactica references. We already have the Quarians and Geth relationship which is highly similar to the Cylons and the 12 colonies, but being Admiral Adama and commanding the ship during a enemy engagement that requires strategy to avoid losing crew members would have been really neat. Surprised that the series has yet to take that opportunity.
I can’t believe you’re not doing ME2 and 3!!! All the times you had to stop yourselves from spoiling things in the future won’t be paid off! Come on, you don’t have to do it now but just have those games be the next two games you play for the deepest dive. You know everyone will watch… it truly will be the best, most thorough discussion of Mass Effect on the internet. Great content either way!
Uriel51 I am so sad that the panel thinks Tali is a dud. She is my favorite gal, and imo the quarian \ geth story is by far the best in the whole trilogy. She also has the most personal growth arc and rewarding romance. My mind is blown! Tali ride or die baby!
Fair enough, something each of you spoke about is how hard it is to separate out your knowledge of the whole trilogy when playing through 1. Still though, even on my first playthrough I remember being disappointed that you aren't able to romance her.
Captain Kirrahe and his squad are also on the Normandy after the mission. They're down in the hanger in the corner to the left I think. There's nothing super meaningful from this (that I know of), just a cool touch they included. If none of you used the explosive rounds attachment I'd recommend seeking it out. Putting it on my shotgun plus giving it to Wrex's shotgun makes the game very fun as you round corners and immediately delete the enemy standing there or you see an enemy fly across your screen from Wrex's devastation. The physics of this game were overall satisfying between using the Mako cannon, biotics, or an explosive shotgun round to the face.
22:25 - The main antagonist in Shadow Man is called Legion, and it's the very same Legion that we know and love from the Bible, Mark 5.9 - "And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many."
I was continuing to listen to this on my run. I was on the sex scene talk part. Juba's "AHHHWOOOGA" made me laugh too hard and had to stop running for a bit!
I agree with Leo on that I was kind of middling on the middle part of the game but from Virmire on it's a way better experience and memorable. I just started ME2 last night and man, lot's of stuff I wasn't expecting.
Concerning the vulnerability of Sovereign and the Reapers; if you’re playing renegade or just feeling tough, while talking to sovereign on Virmire you have a choice that says “But you’re just a machine, and machines can be broken.” I think it kind of plays into the conflict between organically and synthetics that even when anyone who knows anything about the reapers says the unstoppable (never invulnerable I might add as well), that almost out of spite organics, humans, would rather die fighting that submit or be rolled over. Like the reapers are only unstoppable if you believe them to be so.
Damn I wish you guys would continue But I can’t force it so I’ll just say That was a good deep dive with a strong cast and MASS EFFECT 2 is a lot darker then my little kid mind remembered
The Vigil bright strobing thing is a problem with the remaster. The original is no where near as bright. It practically looks like a different model and animation in fact.
Funnily enough, Bioware's older games, Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2 had you importing your save file from the first into the second and some decisions would carry over. I don't think it was as in depth as Mass Effect but it still affected the player character quite significantly.
I am very late here, but I find it super interesting that the majority of the fanbase genuinely still doesn’t get it. They don’t get that the intelligence and the Reaper program are separate things, they don’t get the reasons for the reapers existence, they don’t get that no matter what ending you chose, the Reapers lose, and the Reaper program in its current form is destroyed.
I'm so curious what the "thing" was in ME3 that caused Ben Hanson's friend to quit. *Spoilers* My first thought was Admiral Gerrel's decision re: the geth dreadnought.

Ben, you really need to play the trilogy with Wrex ALIVE. I can't imagine playing ME2 and ME3 without him in the universe.
