    So about 200 of the 288 comments are people correcting me about ZF being their own independent company, and Mercedes not sourcing many of their transmissions there. Anybody else want to remind me???

    Here in germany we have a contraption to flush the gearbox.
    A bit like what you use to change the A/C fluid. The machine is spliced into the lines to the transmission oil cooler, the drain plug, the fill plug and instead of the oil filter. It has gauges for the fresh and the used oil so you can see the difference and then you start taking 1 liter oil out and put 1 liter fresh oil in, repeat until the oil in both gauges looks good :D
    You usually need double the amount of a full oil change to do this, but you get most of the crap out of the trans.

    • @user-cq6em5wt2r
      @user-cq6em5wt2r 5 років тому +3

      Yes absolutely correct the wizard has only changed about 4 litres of transmission oil , to do a full flush the manual way to get to seeing fresh oil colour he will need to use about 12 litres, the transmission oil with oil cooler is probably about 10 litres when full with the torque converter aswell, a 12 litre flush should see nice clean oil, so fully flushed .Normally about 4 litres out ,4 back in the transmission , pump 4 back out with the transmission radiator return pipe off into a 4 litre container turn engine off, 4 back in transmission and turn car back on to pump 4 back out which will be black ,i do this 3 times and after 12 litres approx it's clean transmission oil.
      Nice and cherry red colour, i cannot believe wizard only did the gearbox drain that is only about a third out of the old oil.

    Great channel with great interaction from the 2 guys and lots great repair tips. Beautiful collection of cars and plenty of space to work on them. Great to see professional honest mechanics who know what their doing!
    You know just a simple transmission with 4 gears clutches and bands and a valve body and couple of sensors and mysteriously will go for 30 years without a single fault and only a couple of oil changes. My Jap 4 speed is that old and i still dont get any error codes which i read with a led light plugged in!! I also have a ultrasonic AFS so not hot wires getting contaminated and tripping a code and one computer for the whole car and yea 4 wheel disks! My distributor is a mechanical type with a hall sensor and works perfectly and i carry a spare igniter and pugs and leads in case the ignition system plays up- its controlled from the computer but the computer just keeps working . My car costs me nothing and its reliable and in its day comfortable to drive and still is. 1987 mitsub Magna from Australia.
    Seems every new car is in the garage with misc codes tripping from little glitches and yet lot of the time, the car drives ok. For mechanics its a gold mine but many a time they are frustrated finding these problems and swap stuff out only to charge the customer yet the problem is just in the wiring but lack of skills for these new "techs", they cant diagnose properly. Channels like South main auto in upstate New York find these glitches when others cant and of course The wizard is so good as he knows whats hes doing and has tons of patience for these cars.
    Transmission with life time fluid- Yeah!- change all your fluids and DONT flush. Little bit of maintenance can extend the life of any metal to metal component and all cars need servicing or they simple wont last.

    Just to clarify Hoovie and all concerned, the ZF Trans-6HP26 is properly filled on the side fill plug, this ensures the proper level of fluid at 40 Celsius, once it you reaches a steady drip of fluid out of this fill plug opening, the trans is filled properly, this is per ZF, any other method cannot ensure the proper level of of trans fluid is reached. Only Ravenol and ZF Lifeguard6 fluids are approved by ZF. Source-Myself, Maserati Master Tech 17 years.

    I'm pretty sure this will get buried but for ZF transmissions you HAVE to use genuine ZF fluid, if you use anything else like that Valvoline stuff the transmission won't be for long. Not that it matters anyways because hoovie will probably sell it in 2 months but still

    Reminds me of when I changed the "sealed for life" fluid on my E36 BMW... Having to have the car running whilst I was underneath was not a nice experience!
    But hey, got over 250,000 miles from that car... And it wasn't the gearbox that finally condemned it as beyond economical repair!

  • @wurlyone4685
    @wurlyone4685 5 років тому +2

    Erm... There's a good reason why the fluid came out golden, rather than red - a lot of zf auto boxes don't use traditional red ATF, they use different fluid, that is a golden colour and traditional Dexron type ATF isn't compatible!
    Did you guys check this one specifically before ordering/filling it?

    Great show but I don’t think any ZF transmission of that era was used in a Mercedes automobile. As far as I know the transmission in question is the ZF 6HP26 and was used on BMWs and Jaguar models. It should be durable though since it’s rated by the manufacturer for 600 Nm.

    The ZF fluid is actually a clearish amber color, yours really wasn't that bad. Still a good idea to be proactive on it and you should be fine using the maxlife atf. The standard syn atf has a bit lower viscosity than the zf spec stuff. If it meets LT71141 it will be fine

    On the older Mercedes trans they usually need the speed sensor on the conductor plate, which is all 1 piece. (2 sensors built into the plate). The transmission computer plug that plugs into the transmission might have a little fluid in it, that could also be causing a failed connection.
