Actually, I have listened to Arrau's. His interpretation is very good. But still I would slightly favor Mr. Zimerman for this piece as his interpretation is seamlessly smooth, subtle, yet without sacrificing the breathtaking passion and power of Ludwig. No disrespect for Arrau. I always admire him : )
Yeah. Likewise, as far as I know, Arrau's interpretations of many Beethoven's piano music works especially sonatas are unsurpassed, which I'm a huge fan of. But as far as this particular concerto, Zimerman did really really well.
10:48 one of the most dramatically beautiful passages I have ever heard in any concerto. This is absolute perfection that can’t be stated into words! You can feel the fury and fire of every single note.
It always makes me cry when I watch "The king's speech" and in the end, after the speech and as the war had just started, they play the second movement. I heard this was a symbol of "forgiveness" for us Germans. Thank you
Forgiveness for those germans existing today is hypocrisy. Children during the war and those who lived afterwards. A sign of forgiveness of all living soldiers perhaps.
Is it just me or was this rendition amazing? I've listened to this concerto by other orchestras but this one just stands out as particularly incredible.
The power and precision of the Vienna Phil is awesome! Recording engineers deserve a mention - as does Leonard Bernstein for his incredible dynamism and control - the tempo being exactly right for this masterpiece. Krystian Zimerman was born to perform the Emperor. His interpretation of the adagio is stunning, placing slightly differing time intervals between the single notes which no other concert pianist would dream of doing ...inspirational!
The Emperor was the first Beethoven composition I ever heard (Arrau/Philharmonia/Silvestri), and one of the first classical pieces. It entered my soul, and changed my life.
Amazing performance. Zimerman is supreme. Bernstein lives every note . It's difficult for me to say which is my favourite of Beethoven piano concertos but the second movement of the fifth always moves me to tears in it's sheer beauty. I remember the first time of hearing being literally stopped in my tracks. That was almost 30 years ago and the beauty lives on. ♥️
I really love Beethoven's 3rd & 4th Concertos, but the 5th is absolute perfection. The first movement is all heroic & full of moments of tenderness, the second inner sadness, redemption & ¡nner peace, the 3rd movement is sheer unbridled joy & a few moments of reprise... then back to true hear felt joy. My God... Beethoven truly is an immortal figure. His music will transcend times as long as intelligence exists. Beethoven was more than a man. He was a prophet & an angel.
Beethoven is truly amazing! The more you listen to it the more you love it and the more patterns you see and emotions you feel. I have come across nothing that improves with more and more time than LVB’s music
Absolute musical genius no doubt. Who can compare. But an angel, he was not, if the biographical movie - "Immortal Beloved", is in any way accurate. He was a jealous, envious controlling tyrant. I wouldn't dream of treating people and my own siblings the way he did. And it had absolutely nothing toi do with his deafness or that people couldn't understand his pain and inner turmoil due to his deafness. Certainly won't stop me from listening to his music though. It's divine, and I think, divinely inspired.
One of the most enjoyable things of this concert, is to see a man who really loved his work like Leonard Bernstein, it’s amazing see him smiling and jumping of happiness 😊
ZImerman is gifted beyond belief and the entire piece is flawlessly conducted and executed by the very best musicians, at the height of their power. This is by far my favorite performance of this Beethoven standard.
So good. Just made my morning, listening to this and sipping my coffee and thinking about the endless possibilities of this world. Would not trade it away for anything.
I was introduced to this concerto by my mother over 30 years ago and loved it immediately and still get just as excited to hear it now as I did then. It is by far one of the best pieces of music written. But what else would one expect from Beethoven.
Just imagine what the first listeners must have felt when, instead of the usual first few minutes of à piano concerto in which the main theme is played by the orchestra and only then picked up by the piano, they heard a single chord, followed by the bravura playing of the pianist. I bet that made them sit up and take notice!
The performance is fabulous! Here is Beethoven speaking to humanity, giving vent to his personal tragedy, his deafness But his soul remains unconquered! To me, the greatest composer & the greatest concerto ever. An artistic & emotional experience. Thanks for the post. Jamshed Delvadavala from Mumbai.
Le plus beau morceau du répertoire classique mené L. Bernstein et le pianiste Zimerman, la perfection est de ce monde. Quelle émotion! Merci pour le partage.
He’s perfect for Beethoven : his timing is excellent, his crescendi are very intense and his forte very powerful. I would not take him over Khatia Buniatishvilli for more romantic works though
Tim Heavner Yes, I totally agree! I really like his interpretation of Ballade No. 3 in particular. His ability to interpret composers from various eras so well is impressive.
By the time I’m watching this there are no commercials (2019)! I am a classical musical lover for over 55 years but I must say Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto has to be my favorites. Love Mozart, Schubert, Rachmaninov, and the list goes on but...Beethoven is my favorite and this 5th piano concerto is at the top of my list! So is Bernstein....
@@hossameddinriyad Yes Hossam, I have listened to Fredrisch Gulda (1966 with the Vienna Phil). You probably know that the number of viewings is far less than Bernstein/Zimerman who have attracted nearly 3 million on youtube - and there is the clue. It is hard to believe that both performances were with the Vienna Philarmonic! The playing of Gulda - especially the demanding Adagio - is very wooden, just like the orchestra which may be due to the influence of the conductor? There is no passion, dynamics or excitement that you hear with Bernstein in this wonderful interpretation. As a classically trained musician I could not listen to Gulda from choice, it is too painful to my ear. This performance by Bernstein/Zimerman will probably never be equalled, and I think many other music lovers agree with me.
I get it, I really do. I could never explain the beauty of this to someone who doesn’t get classical music. Yet I know my fellow classical music lovers that post, can understand and feel this music the way I do.
After having studied and listened to music all my life , this concerto is the crowning glory in all the keyboard literature ! Beethoven the TITAN of music .!
I have never ever heard a more perfect performance of the Adagio of this concerto. Zimerman raises it to a level of sublimity unmatched by far by any other pianist i have heard. The rest of the work is maintained at this Olympian level..Thank you Zimerman. You are god-like in your artistry and humanity.
It is very very spectacular that Sound like real emperor is marching in from the beginning !!! Orchestra and Zimmerman are excellent together, best concerto No 5 ever listened , real beauty !!!!!
The power generated by the orchestra is incredible... OK it's a good sound recording, but there is an extra dimension going on between Bernstein, Zimerman and the Vienna Phil. that elevates this rendition of the Emperor to a completely new level. Check out Zimermans' second movement solo, each single note varies slightly in time interval from the previous one - no other concert pianist has ever dared to make such a bold interpretation ...wonderful! Not strictly ballroom you might say - but Zimerman is the ultimate showman after all.
You are so right, i follow every single word your wrote. This interpretation is the ultimate, gives me the chill right from the beginning and makes me cry so i am overwhelmed by emotions....
In reference to what you said above about how he varies the time on each note just slightly, I often wondered if it was written like that or if he did it on purpose or by accident. For a split second you think he slipped in his timing but then you realize it was intentional and that it was thought out and done on purpose. What I am trying to say is this thought process happens in my mind every time I listen to it and it somehow makes it even better. Like it's more personal.
@@katrinat.3032 Benjamin Zander talks about disappearing 8th notes in his lectures, I think this is something similar happening here, being more flexible and having more freedom in playing. :)
Along with his 4th concerto, this Beethoven´s work is the greatest piano concerto ever. The model to be follow and one of the summits of the universal art. Majestic and deep beyond any description. All the words in the universe are not enought to describe this marvel.
Eduardo Guerra I agree this is indeed his very best piano concerto And the 4th is good too. I know classical music had different eras , but Beethoven to me is just the best. And there are many masters Mozart chief among many but this guy and his style is just in your face. If I might borrow a modern description. Thank you Herr Beethoven.
I disagree, I believe, since it is a "piano" concerto, than without a doubt, Chopin's concerti should be up there with Beethoven's 3rd, 4th, and 5th concerti. I would also add Brahms 1st piano concerto, Rach's 2nd, Tchaikovsky's 1st, and Schumann's.
But there is a 5th concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979!! Deutsche gramophone! Vienna Orchestra!! This is a masterpiece of high quality sound!!
I'm a rock music aficionado, but this is the most beautiful piece of music ever created. (a sublime performance too) It flicks a switch deep inside me.
I love rock music too. But my first love is classical music. It's so nice to figuratively meet ppl who lappreciate different kinds of music. And this piece is sublime.
Headbanger here, but I also listen to most kinds of music. But for someone to not acknowledge the roots of where music comes from would just be a sad mistake. This is one of the most amazing pieces of music ever written. One of the few that still give me chills each time to hear it again. This is an amazing performance of this piece, and it really shows the skill of the performers well.
I believe that music is just music and we tend to group music into many forms that just have to do with structure and rhythm. I believe music is just music.
Leonard Bernstein, the conductor of this performance, and also an accomplished pianist, music teacher and ingenious composer himself, always fought against an artificial division of music in genres, especially that in ( allegedly superior ) "serious music" vs. ( allegedly inferior ) "music for entertainment". He did always teach, that basically there are only two sorts of music : good music and bad music ! 🙂 Simply as that !
When I listen to such magnificent music,, I think that perhaps there may be hope for humanity in spite of everything. Perhaps we are not such a lost cause after all.
+Steven Yourke These kinds of beautiful music reflects humans future in spite of war, misery etc. This new earth must come thats sure, but it takes a very long time because the condition is FREEDOM, individually and collective. Freedom, that respects personal growth, nature life and creation, unity in diversity, we are still far away from that..
+Wim Beuming Especially freedom from a surveillance state tyrannical government that feels free to enact their police-state measures under the pretext of fighting those who hate our "freedoms", thereby aiding and abetting the so-called "terrorists".
among other composers, the Nazis listened to and elevated music like this as a matter of state policy. Not at all to say this music does that to a person; in fact, I agree with most of what you say. it's just that human subjectivity is capable of corrupting the sublimest works of art.
+Steven Yourke Yes, the music is beautiful, refreshing, moving, and so necessary...but, the world is collapsing around us and all the conductors in the world can't stop it. The Fall of the Holy Roman Empire all over again.
It has often been stated that music can touch the soul. Mr.Zimmerman has captured the soul of Beethoven in his interpretation of this Concerto. To me when I hear this particular Concerto I feel it is an Auto Biography by Beethoven in Music instead of words. The music creates images of people and places long ago. It is a wonderfull story. I have been listening to the Emperor Concerto for many decades now and each time I hear it, it is like the Very First Time. It is simply amazing how it stirs some of ones deepest emotions!
I can hear that the start of the 3rd movement was probably an improvisation, something he experimented with before committing to it. You can hear this in some of his sonatas. This particular performance was the epitome of perfection, combining incredible skill, a superb orchestra, artful camera work and, of course, Bernstein himself. Bravo!

The most beautiful piece of music ever written. Thank you, UA-cam for your immense contribution to magnificence, and Maestro Bernstein was such a great artist of the genre.
There are sublime passages in the first movement which are truly “other worldly” and move me to tears on occasions. I cannot help but think of my dear deceased partner and how much I miss him and yearn for his presence and company. Such a reality would truly be heavenly and an emotional feast.
I’ve listen to this piece almost every day this summer. I think I have a piano Concerto No. 5 addiction
understandable behaviour honestly
omg me tooooooooooo
Love it as well.
me too 😎
Mee too!! Just my absolute all time favorite!!
coming back after years and in tears! how beautiful can music be?
10:48 one of the most dramatically beautiful passages I have ever heard in any concerto. This is absolute perfection that can’t be stated into words! You can feel the fury and fire of every single note.
So true

Zimmerman and Bernstein made perfect combination. Best version of Beethoven piano concerto5 . Pure beauty. 🌹
Absolutely! Bernstein being my favorite conductor and Zimerman my favorite pianist, what a combination!
Et Rubinstein-Barenboim, c'était du poulet ?
Proof we were created by something incomprehensible- definition of beauty and humanity. More than “Art”.
Simply superb combination of Conductor and pianist, but the rest of the orchestra made the total experience what it was, simply magnificent.

I had the pleasure to translate an interview from a non english speaking journalist to the great Zimerman. He was nice, goodlooking and polite to me.
😮
Cool
The most magnificent execution of The Emperor. I've listened to this at least a hundred times over the years and I never lose my joy.
Xandrosi the execution of the emperor 😂 ok... depends which one of them 😉
@@radiumdude Somehow "The Execution of the Emperor" sounds like an epic movie, or perhaps a novel, when you say it that way. :O

This was my father’s favorite concert , bring me tears , miss you Dad . What a masterpiece
Yes! That meandering of the notes!
legendary pianist, legendary conductor, legendary philharmonic orchestra and greatest composer of all times. too good.
All true.
Its beautiful how Beethoven uses every instrument to its full extent. Beethoven brings about something primal.
In the final movement Bernstein is overjoyed. He knows he just conducted a masterpiece.
Definitely!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Oh yeah and that answer between the solist and the orchestra is amazing!
Thank you for uploading this video.
This is the most favorite classical music because my father who died three years ago loved.
Geniul compozitorului +măiestria dirijorului + rafinamentul pianistului = momente divine! ❤ Este cea mai buna interpretare!

The Emperor was the first Beethoven composition I ever heard (Arrau/Philharmonia/Silvestri), and one of the first classical pieces. It entered my soul, and changed my life.
arrau, the best
Amazing performance. Zimerman is supreme. Bernstein lives every note . It's difficult for me to say which is my favourite of Beethoven piano concertos but the second movement of the fifth always moves me to tears in it's sheer beauty. I remember the first time of hearing being literally stopped in my tracks. That was almost 30 years ago and the beauty lives on. ♥️
6:45 - 7:00 waawww som amazing. And you can see the passion in Bernstein's conducting. Beautifull
The very last moments of the piano are beyond any description. Just music coming from the sky. Bravo Zimerman e Great, great Beethoven.
OK 100/100.
Yes, he was merely practicing his stuff on the ones leading up to no. 5 since it is so clearly the superior piece!
MUSIC THERAPY
Beethoven was way ahead of his time!!! Phrasing, transition, progression. Perfect!
One of the most enjoyable things of this concert, is to see a man who really loved his work like Leonard Bernstein, it’s amazing see him smiling and jumping of happiness 😊
A dire il vero non è il solo, molti direttori si divertono o si commuovono dirigendo questi capolavori: non si fa mai l'abitudine alla bellezza!
ZImerman is gifted beyond belief and the entire piece is flawlessly conducted and executed by the very best musicians, at the height of their power. This is by far my favorite performance of this Beethoven standard.
You are correct! This is the most inspired recorded performance of the 5th there has ever been.
So good. Just made my morning, listening to this and sipping my coffee and thinking about the endless possibilities of this world. Would not trade it away for anything.
☕👍🎼🎶🎵... same
I agree. As long as I have music like this to go to I can survive anything
Unbelievable... I'm lost for words. Orchestra, Conductor & one of the finest pianists plus of course immortal Beethoven.
I was introduced to this concerto by my mother over 30 years ago and loved it immediately and still get just as excited to hear it now as I did then. It is by far one of the best pieces of music written. But what else would one expect from Beethoven.
23:36 has to be one of the most beautiful passages I’ve ever heard in any song of any genre
In my opinion, the most beautiful and melodic 9 minutes of music ever written........
lagente,que
I get goosebumps when I listened to that part.
Check out Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 2nd movement ;)
"song"
And for 41 minutes and 24 seconds, the world was ok
Just imagine what the first listeners must have felt when, instead of the usual first few minutes of à piano concerto in which the main theme is played by the orchestra and only then picked up by the piano, they heard a single chord, followed by the bravura playing of the pianist. I bet that made them sit up and take notice!
The performance is fabulous!
Here is Beethoven speaking to humanity, giving vent to his personal tragedy, his deafness
But his soul remains unconquered! To me, the greatest composer & the greatest concerto ever. An artistic & emotional experience.
Thanks for the post.

The more I listen to Krystian Zimerman, the more I like his playing.
He’s perfect for Beethoven : his timing is excellent, his crescendi are very intense and his forte very powerful. I would not take him over Khatia Buniatishvilli for more romantic works though
His recordings of the Chopin Ballades is my top favorite.
Tim Heavner Yes, I totally agree! I really like his interpretation of Ballade No. 3 in particular. His ability to interpret composers from various eras so well is impressive.

Did you listen to the interpretation of that piece by Fredrisch Gulda. He is the best.

I totally agree
After having studied and listened to music all my life , this concerto is the crowning glory in all the keyboard literature ! Beethoven the TITAN of music .!
i like how Bernstein embraced Zimerman at the end, it's like a father saying "i'm proud of you" to his son, which moved me a lot
Siempre fue su favorito, desde sus inicios.
I have never heard this piece played more perfectly than Mr. Zimmerman. Bravo!
Love to see this brilliance move Lenny to DANCE 💃
OMG THAT PIANIST!! Those perfect trills w unbelievably exact timing with his runs!!!
@@renokenzo2198 I never get tired of it
In reference to what you said above about how he varies the time on each note just slightly, I often wondered if it was written like that or if he did it on purpose or by accident. For a split second you think he slipped in his timing but then you realize it was intentional and that it was thought out and done on purpose. What I am trying to say is this thought process happens in my mind every time I listen to it and it somehow makes it even better. Like it's more personal.
Indeed. The combination of Bernstein, Zimerman and the Vienna Philharmonic produced something that transcends playing
@@katrinat.3032 Benjamin Zander talks about disappearing 8th notes in his lectures, I think this is something similar happening here, being more flexible and having more freedom in playing. :)
The most beautiful piece of music ever written? And this rendition, combination of pianist, conductor and orchestra... brings me to tears
I have exactly the same sentiment. I have never heard anything to surpass this - and Beethoven stands supreme.

Along with his 4th concerto, this Beethoven´s work is the greatest piano concerto ever. The model to be follow and one of the summits of the universal art. Majestic and deep beyond any description. All the words in the universe are not enought to describe this marvel.
Eduardo Guerra Mozarts concerto in d minor tho :D
Eduardo Guerra I agree this is indeed his very best piano concerto And the 4th is good too. I know classical music had different eras , but Beethoven to me is just the best. And there are many masters Mozart chief among many but this guy and his style is just in your face. If I might borrow a modern description. Thank you Herr Beethoven.
totalmente de acuerdo con usted.
Coincido. Es una obra maestra.
I have heard quite a few recordings of this beauty, but none were half as good as this interpretation. This one hits the heart hard💘
But there is a 5th concert performed by Pollini and Karl Boehm in 1979!! Deutsche gramophone! Vienna Orchestra!! This is a masterpiece of high quality sound!!
Breathtaking. Best concerto for piano ever written, hands down.

@@MsBettyRubble Same i love rock and loved motown punk pop actually very eclectic taste but classical always in first place
Leonard Bernstein, the conductor of this performance, and also an accomplished pianist, music teacher and ingenious composer himself, always fought against an artificial division of music in genres, especially that in ( allegedly superior ) "serious music"
vs. ( allegedly inferior )
"music for entertainment".
He did always teach, that basically there are only two sorts of music :
good music and bad music ! 🙂
Simply as that !
One of my favourite moments in all music. 07:47. It's so mysteriously brilliant.
+Steven Yourke
+Steven Yourke Yes, the music is beautiful, refreshing, moving, and so necessary...but, the world is collapsing around us and all the conductors in the world can't stop it. The Fall of the Holy Roman Empire all over again.
One of the best Piano Concerto, Pianist and Conductor.❤
If anyone can listen to this without a tear in their eyes, they are not human.
Or at least goosebumps ❤
There are sublime passages in the first movement which are truly “other worldly” and move me to tears on occasions. I cannot help but think of my dear deceased partner and how much I miss him and yearn for his presence and company. Such a reality would truly be heavenly and an emotional feast. Love, like this epic music, is surely immortal?
You are right x
