- In this presentation, Piet Stevens from ACA Technologies talks about the design and evolution of the Magoye Ripper, a land preparation tool.
The Magoye Ripper is an alternative to the plough. Ploughing turns the soil inside out, so much of the soil moisture is lost to evapotranspiration. The magoye ripper, on the other hand, creates linear grooves in the soil in which the seeds can be planted. The undisturbed part of the field preserves soil moisture underneath them. The ripper also makes it easier to prepare drier, harder soils. So farmers don't have to wait for the rainy season to prepare their fields.
The Magoye Ripper was developed in Magoye, Zambia. Through the WAHARA project (www.wahara.eu), it is now being tried out in northern Burkina Faso.
