Dover Castle commands the Strait of Dover, the shortest sea crossing between England and continental Europe, a position of strategic importance throughout history.
Castle Hill was shaped into massive defences capped by medieval walls and towers and later, from the mid 18th century, by the earthworks of a garrisoned infantry and artillery fortress. Beneath the surface, cut into the chalk of the North Downs, are networks of tunnels to enable the garrison to move, plan and live in safety.
King Henry II began to build the present castle in the 1180s, and over the next 800 years its buildings, defences and tunnels were adapted to meet the changing demands of warfare, right into the era of nuclear weapons.

Thanks Chris, that was really cool to see the castle. I kept trying to peak around the corners, but the camera didn't follow me. Crazy! But did you know, Medieval Kings and Queens were afraid of the rain in the middle ages because the rain would storm the castle. Ah Haaaa!

Dover Castle is the quintessential castle. It was built by Henry II because was all about his image. When the King of France showed up on the beach of Dover unannounced one day he had no place to host (or impress) him in the area. So he decided to build the boldest castle he could right at the shore of Dover. The site has been a defensive point for centuries. There are even ruins of a Roman lighthouse on the grounds.

Spiral staircases in castle always turn in the same direction so that (right handed) invaders would have trouble wielding their swords while the defenders above would have more room to do so.

Chris, I don't know anything about this landmark in England and I was beyond amazed. What I picked up on this video was this castle was all built on manual labor. Back then, they didn't have a lot of resources to build these kind of things like they do now. The story about Dunkirk was so fascinating to learn in the movie, I can't emphasize how good it was. History really interests me so much and I can't wait to learn more about what England has to offer. I will put this down on my bucket list.
BTW, I have to say that PPP makes this world so much better in so many beautiful ways. Chris, Amanda, and Miles: You're such a wonderful Disney loving family who cares about their community so much! You guys bring so much peace, love, joy, and happiness to my life.

You notice the way the stairs curve means that you could have your sword arm free (right arm) on the way up the stairs. They would have had glass makers by the time the castle was made and it would have been plastered and painted too in places, other parts would have been wooden and their would have been tapestries all over the place too. As well as lots of plush soft furnishings, cushions, curtains etc in the main rooms, not the stair wells, they would likely have had shutters on windows too. It was great fun to explore it with you, many thanks PPP family :)

I LOVED visiting Dover Castle a few years ago. It was a big highlight of my trip to England. That hole they bored from whatever story of the castle to like a mile below ground a thousand years ago (or whatever it was)... amazing!! Like how did they do all that back then? "I'm not saying it was stone masons... but it was stone masons"

Thanks for Visiting Dover castle. It's on a site used for 1000's of years. Hope you enjoyed the Dunkirk tunnels. Return to the wartime hospital tunnels. Did you know Hitler demanded that Dover was not to be bombed because he wanted to capture Dover castle and call it his own as it would be seen as the bastion of the UK Falling. Another fact was that the castle was made big and grand because the French were going to be visiting but he had no fancy or strong place to welcome them. ... That's why it made big and grand. The castle has also been used for lots of Disney films including " into the woods."

  • @Cjerome2011

All spiral staircases in castles go up to the right (clockwise) because all swordsmen were right handed, so when the castle was under attack it was easier to fight and defend the castle by using your sword downwards. Trying to fight upwards was difficult

When I visited England castles the stairs were the worst. Have to remember they were shorter/smaller on average. The poor would generally only get meat once a week, because even if they raised meat animals they sold those. The royal guards were called Beef eaters as beef was part of their wages.

The stairs were built to defend with your right hand, but if your trying to fight your way up the right hand is a hindrance as you'll be hitting the wall.
The handrails are a modern addition they did not have any.

The castle was made from the hands of Benjamin Dover, First of his name. His friends called him Crafty Ben Dover, and he loved to entertain large masses of people. He would conscript the local townsfolk to raise 200 pigs every year in order to throw a large party where he'd serve them all traditional English breakfasts. Not to be outdone, his cousin Even Dover from Dublin built the exact same castle on the opposite side of England and would compete for who would throw the biggest party. Unfortunately Ben Dover fell ill with trying to keep up with additional pigs and Even Dover won over Ben Dover with his Dublin Pork Turnover. When Ben Dover tried the Dublin Turnover, he fell sick and doubled over. Thus the Dover blunder was done under.
