But you have to learn basics to be able to use it or some variation of it in fight. Same goes for any MMA or boxing or anything. Pad holder placing pads for already prepared pattern and fighter does it slowly and than faster and after that goes to sparring to modify and learn to use it in real situation. Same goes for this. Same is in Sparring in any martial sport. You can go and sparrnand do anything or cooperate and just attack at some speed or some atracks and not everything when you train or show it to public to promote your sport or martial art

Well in theory that situation will always work, but what if you don't outpace the attacker with your retreat? Then he'll hit your ribs. Facts are maintain a distance to begin with and close it when you can as you did in the end. Or instead of leaving your ribs open at all then protect them with your forearms as with typical boxer stance.
I had to use this, everything came by instinct. Let me tell you it works like a charm. Self defense is one of those skills that should be learned but hope you never need to use.

The thing is I went out and played foam tag every weekend for many, many years. I did grow up in a rougher area, but being aware is the best self defense tool for an environment like that.

Not necessarily. From what I have seen personally at my old job with people attacking someone with a long weapon of some sort the attacker also kind of stands in a resistance position hesitating. In other words they don't really move forward when they swing because they fear getting disarmed or just getting hit after missing. But I have also seen the Berserker type lol.

Facts are maintain a distance to begin with and close it when you can as you did in the end. Or instead of leaving your ribs open at all then protect them with your forearms as with typical boxer stance.

I had to use this, everything came by instinct. Let me tell you it works like a charm. Self defense is one of those skills that should be learned but hope you never need to use.
what i'm getting from this is, when i swing a bat at someone, swing top down. got it.
Pro-tip: Aim for the collarbone. They break easy.
Start your swing for the head. They will either raise hands to block, close distance, or duck. No matter which one they do, you adjust the swing to the lead knee. Step back immediately after impact to avoid getting tangled up.

@@cwr8618 a decent amount of martial arts training and 2 decades of larping. Which people scoff at because until recently it was a little too nerdy even for nerds. The thing is I went out and played foam tag every weekend for many, many years. Got to practice concepts from training like distance management, reading telegraphs, fighting multiple people...well you get the idea. The soft skills of the fighting world.
I did grow up in a rougher area, but being aware is the best self defense tool for an environment like that.

This advice that he gave is actually valid. Letting them miss the first swing and than closing in applies to so much more than just baseball bats.
Obviously if you can run just run but if you are cornered having a plan is better than nothing.

Not necessarily. From what I have seen personally at my old job with people attacking someone with a long weapon of some sort the attacker also kind of stands in a resistance position hesitating. In other words they don't really move forward when they swing because they fear getting disarmed or just getting hit after missing. But I have also seen the Berserker type lol.
