  • Hey cockatiel fans,
    This video is the last in my cockatiel mini series! I wanted to refresh some of my older videos and add some new ones too for all my cockatiel subscribers!
    This is an updated version of my cockatiel cage set up video, showing how our cockatiel's cage is currently set up! The boys seem to really enjoy this current environment, so I thought it might inspire others too!
    Any comments or questions as always, feel free!

      They are moulting so they go from exploring, to napping to wanting pets rapidly lol

    Thumbs UP! Thank you. What a thorough and helpful educational video. I have this and Sophie's version of this both saved. I really struggle with setting up my two cockatiels' cages. I also cannot find organic substrate, but I am going to keep looking (I am in the U.S.). My two girls are afraid of everything so I will have to take time introducing them to some things. They do like the bambo toys. Anyway, thank you both for all you do.

      Cockatiels can definitely be a bit neophobic about things but they do adapt with desense work!

    Great cage - I also have the pineapple palm leaf toy and the balsa busy center toy for one of my cockatiels - she loves the pineapple one but she wasn’t a fan of the balsa busy center. I think the large size intimidated her. She also has one similar to the preening toy you have - it’s called a pinwheel and has the finger traps filled with paper but that also seemed a bit large for her liking. I find they enjoy smaller toys but I also have some plastic toys in addition to their natural ones.

      Thank you!
      It does depend on the individual birds tastes and what they prefer!
      The boys aren’t too bothered by larger toys but I know some cockatiels do prefer smaller ones!
      They also aren’t into plastic toys (unless it’s training) whereas another cockatiel may be happier with them

    Can you please give more details about the cage substrate you use? I'm not in the UK.

    I know you regularly change out their toys, but what are your thoughts on changing up perch placement?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +3

      We tend to swap out perches when they get worn out or need replacing, sometimes we will adjust their positioning if we feel they can be better placed.
      As a rule we don’t move them too much if they are working where they are!

    Do your birds ever get sunlight? Is that important?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +3

      They do through an open window where possible or when we can take them out in a travel carrier!
      We live in a top floor apartment so it makes it difficult to just pop them outside in a garden!
      It is important yes mostly for vitamin D! This can also be supplemented in the diet though!

    Is it required to wash a new cage (if it smells like protective grease)? And which tool is better to choose?

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +2

      If it smells of grease I’d say yes. We sent one back as it had grease over it!
      You can use a pressure washer, or hose and washing up liquid provided it’s washed off thoroughly or just swap it as no cage should have loads of residue! We use f10 disinfectant mostly.

    • @pavlopotapenko2686
      @pavlopotapenko2686 Рік тому +1

      @@TheParrotTeacher Thank you! It seems like there is no any grease's residues on the cage, only a light smell (like machine oil). It's a Yaheetech 69-inch cage, ordered on their official site from USA (but as it turned out made in China 😥)

    Great video, as always! : ) I have a question: Do you ever have any issues with the gap at the bottom of the cage in the bottom back and the cockatiels sticking their head through? I want to take the grate out of my cockatiel's cage and add substrate at the bottom in the tray, but there's a gap and I worry he might get his head stuck or try to get out.

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +2

      Someone else also mentioned this and I facepalmed myself a bit!
      This was filmed around clean out day and some things weren’t in place and I didn’t address it in the video due to rushing!
      So there’s a couple of ways of sorting that! You can use small wooden runners to prop up the tray and close the gap or just folded card in the corners. We usually just use the card as it’s so easy to replace when worn out and less dirty.
      However even without the gap isn’t big enough for the boys to get their heads through!

    Great video im curently doing some investigation into cages ready for getting birds in the summer i like this cage except for the gap at the bottom on the back of the cage, would this be safe for 2 conures? I like the 31" length i could go wider but my prblem seems to be the bar spacing jumps to 1" its getting a headache to be honest. Any advice would be welcome

    • @TheParrotTeacher
      @TheParrotTeacher  Рік тому +2

      Don’t forget the gap is because we don’t use the bars!
      You can also eliminate it somewhat even without the bars by using wooden runners or folded card!
      It’s something I should have mentioned in the video as this was filmed around clean out day so not everything was perfectly in place!
      It should be suitable for a couple of conures for sure. Pickles and Scampi share one and get on fine in there with plenty of space! There’s does have a slightly different set up with perches and toys though !
      There’s also a decent one on my amazon store that has less depth but LOADS more height depending on your preferences. Louis and Kipling share one like it!

      Thanks for the reply. im terrified in advance of what could go wrong😢 i intend to use substrate, so i under stand about the gap but the thought of getting their little heads stuck is anguish! my bitds are going to get the best, but i just want to get it right x
