- In this 2nd video from our new series, we are reviewing our subscriber's bird cage set ups! If you want to submit yours for this series, send it to info@birdtricks.com. Here is the criteria we are taking into account on each set up:
1. Size

1. Quantity: Is there enough to keep bird engaged?
2. Quality: Natural vs plastic/metal/fabric toys (could link to the 5 Bad Bird Products video)

I concur about what he states about the pear shaped quick links getting caught on birds lower beak. I have an African grey and a few pear shaped quick link toys attached to the top of the cage near a perch. When I got home he had opened the link and slid it over the bottom of his beak and couldn't get it off. The quick link still had it's chain on and was attached to the roof of the cage. So he was literally sitting on his perch, at the top of his cage, attached to the pear shaped quick link that was chained to the roof of the cage. It was terrifying thinking of everything that could have gone wrong if I didn't have that perch there and hadn't put his toys in reaching distance of that perch.

I put vet wrap on my rope perches, and make sure the vet wrap is always free of spots that have been chewed through. If anyone else wants to keep their rope perches this is always an option.
I wrap mine with sisal rope.
These are helpful. I have a Nandy parakeet whom I adopted from my friend when she passed away. The cage was new but tall and narrow. I recently replaced it with a wider cage and my bird enjoys being able to go across from one end to the other. I’m working on getting foraging toys as well as getting him into better health. 👍
We use wild bird feeders with small birds to avoid nesting.

I don’t have a dishwasher so I do everything by hand 🤚 it’s a big process but worth it
It would gross me out to put my perches in the dishwasher. I use an old putty knife and a little wire brush from the hardware store to clean them off.
There's a product called poop off. If you let it sit for a few minutes in makes cleaning perches really easy.
Some bird experts recommend removing the grate as it's hard on the birds feet and providing a substrate base like easichick (pine shaving) which is more natural and can be 'poo picked' daily to keep clean and changed weekly.

Wayfair has amazing cages and they are powder coated and well made I own two large cages and wide is so important not tall. Another thing ceramic bowls are better if possible metal also seeps heavy metals into water and food. I use a steamer and F10 disinfectant spray for cleaning and clean everyday. You both are the cutest couple so nice you both care so much and have dedicated your life to help birds.
When it comes to Bird Channels on You Tube, Jamie and Dave are The Best . They're very loving, knowledgable, selfless, and truly have hearts of Gold. They are damn good examples, teachers, parents, and the Best Trainers in the USA. They also have a very well raised daughter, that is wise beyond her years. I've been a huge fan of this channel for years, and I love the fact that they help so many loving bird owners be The Best That They Can Be. Love the pinecone idea!!! Our macaw is a chronic plucker, but what’s helped is a special preening toy, but I believe it falls into the “rope” category 😕

I like Ceramic because metal is cold on their feet. My first Lovebird loved to sit on the curved water spout. No others do that.
Ceramic is also cold on feet.

You should give the people who are shown in your videos a gift card to your shop and then you could also do a update on the cages in the future. :) But either way a gift card so they can make your improvements and for giving you content would be nice.
Birds are an expensive pet and come with costs. If we are not willing to spend more money for their health, we don't deserve to have them.
@@texmex01 In a perfect world maybe but the truth is many birds the choice is a home or not so any extra that allows for a better life for them is good.

Always someone looking for free stuff. The gift is the suggestions given to them by the video to improve the birds cage life. Nothing more needed then that.
i figured this would be the best place to ask, i was wondering if a cage size of 100cm x 50cm x 50cm is a good size for 1 budgie? obviously it wouldnt be spending all day in there it would be out most of the time and only really going in there to eat and sleep

I just recently got a caique. I have a thirty something double yellowhead, and a 10 year old african grey. Both my parrots have a playpen in which they stay all the time. They have food dishes and water bottles from which they drink with no problem. I tried to do the same setup for the caique. He quickly learned to drink from the water bottle; however, he does not stay in his playpen for longer than an hour. He has a variety of toys, but he chooses to jump onto the african grey's play pen, or onto the couch, or the floor; anywhere but stay on his play pen. I'm wondering if because caiques are such busy birds, and so curious if I will not be able to train him to stay on his own playpen. Any advise/suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you.

I am finding it so hard to find a good feed dish. Some stainless steel reflects like a mirror. For my small birds (budgie/lovebirds)
None of my steel feeding bowls are that shiny. I think they should be fine with them.
@@nataliebutler yeah i have been noticing that. I have found some small stainless steel ones for food & the larger ones for water.
I think its cause they were new. 🤩
Hey so please no hate! But I’m researching to learn on what to do/ not to do. I’m looking at getting a parakeet NEXT year. And I want to research before I do. So I pretty much don’t know anything about them except probably the general knowledge. But I’m wondering why you don’t want birds to nest. When I think of a bird sleeping I guess I think of them in a nest but at the same time I suppose only mother birds need a nest? I can understand not having mirrors for hormones for behavior reasons. So i guess I’m trying to figure out the nesting point of view.
How to wash the rope perches ?
Someone else here said they cover their rope perches with vet tape. Perhaps you could do the same, and just remove and replace the vet tape as it gets soiled.
I'm not sure if I caught the reason, but why get rid of bells? Hormones?
Birds can detach, swallow, and choke on the clappers of bells. Also, many metal bells are made of toxic metals such as alloys w zinc. Those are a couple reasons I don't use them ❤🦜❤
@@groucrow9709 I'm not sure if mine would start chewing on them. My panama amazon likes the noise but I worry if it's over stimulating him.
@McQkorean Personally, I try minimize the unknown and risk. So, I opt for safety and avoid the metal since metal toxicity is cumulative, can be deadly, and has no easy and reliable remedy. There are bird-safe "tubular bell" type toys made out of stainless steel with internal clappers that can not be accessed.
You could also try removing the bell and seeing how your PA behaves without it. It would be interesting to hear if others' birds are over-stimulated by bells. Do you think that your bird may be aggressive, overactive, or stimulated into breeding mode by the bell?

Flipping the cage on its side, use the cage door as a platform when open.
Why are bells bad?
They are shiny and the bird sees his/her reflection and they make noise. Both of those things are a known trigger to hormones. The reflection can seem like a mate to the bird. And noise is a trigger bc birds sing to their mate when they want to woo eachother and they confuse it for another bird singing. They can get obsessed and even swallow the ringer..
Some of the bells can cut the birds beak or tongue. My first Lovebird cut her tongue almost all the way through. I have no idea how she did that. Her tongue eventually healed & grew back together. I was so shocked. Birds can get into things. They need the safest environment. They are very curious, in my thoughts, almost like a puppy.
So many bells are sharp & the bird can harm themselves. People who make bells must not be thinking of bird safety.

Why are bells not a good idea?
They can break off the piece inside and hurt themselves. They do sell safer ones though. But then they sometimes use them to rub up against becoming more hormonal

I forgot, why are bells bad for birds?
They make bells that don’t have those little bits, like the bells I have for my birds
They can seriously injure themselves on them. I've seen birds who managed to split the lower half of their beak on the edge of the bell. They also can sometimes get stuck in the rings suspending them. If the quality is bad, heavy metal poisoning is also a concern.
I’ve seen birds get their beaks stuck in the little dangly bit in the centre. That’s the main concern with bells. You can take that bit out. Also keeping an eye on rust over the whole bell.
Some birds get hormonal from them too
