About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: registered Berkshires, Tamworth, Registered Kune Kune, and Hereford.

Thanks for the cost breakdown! We are 4 months in with $6500 in our 7 cows, ~$1500 in fencing, and our oversized horse trailer cost $3500 a few years ago. When we look at the property taxes we save with our Ag "exemption" it seems reasonable, but otherwise it hurts when you put it down on paper! 😂😢
Yeah adding them all up over the last few years was an eye opener lol
Gotta start somewhere. Looking awesome guys! Have a wonderful day.
great info thanks for sharing!!
That was a great video. Super informative & I liked how you shared each cow/bull/steer/heifer. 👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Love Yalls Videos!
Thank you!
Getting our first Dexters, this is an excellent and informational vid. Thank you..
Awesome. They are addictive 😄
Excellent video and information, Looking forward to starting our Missouri farm here in the near future.
Glad it was helpful!
Well done guys was very helpful. We are starting ours soon here in South Carolina.
Awesome. They are great little cows.
Do you have a video on the breakdown cost of pigs? I'm looking at getting introduced to Pig's .
I don’t think I have things like hog panels in this video. I am going to make a new video in a month after we take a group to butcher. This is from last year.

Fence is a sizable investment and keeping your fence lines it is clear is worth the effort. Good information, nice video.
Thanks for the video. I've just learned about Dexter cow's.And now I know about how much it cost to start a heard.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! I've been researching Dexter's for a while. Ready to make the jump. I'm in Oklahoma and looking for a bred heifer or a milking cow. I have a Jersey and raise Lamancha Dairy goats, as well as kune kune pigs.
Congratulations! I don’t know any breeders in OK but if you go to the ADCA website they have a breeders directory and marketplace where you should be able to locate local breeders.
Lovely folks / family, Lovely herd. ❤
Thank you!
love your guys farm and family
Thank you Jeremy!
We also went big but were already broke! 😂😂😂 And as of today, we still broke!😂😂😂 We haven't gotten any returns back, so our profits are still in the negative. Our herd is 23 now, and out of those 13 are due in a few months. A few things that you may be able to profit from, since Mr. President has such good genetics, you should look into collecting from him. 1. In case of a sudden event, you'll still have his genetics. 2 A few years from now you can reintroduce his genetics back to your herd. And 3. By selling straws out of him to other breeders for AI, you'll have the potential to make good money since he's packed with excellent genetics. (Not telling guys what to do, just exchanging ideas between farmers)
Ps: Any updates on Ghretta? As always, excellent video!
Greta has a week left unfortunately. Good ideas we appreciate it. I can’t remember Do you have Dexters?
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan American Aberdeen
Helpful. I think starting smaller gave you experience you needed. Maybe you already had, but for a startup, wise
We only raised steers out before starting with Dexters. Finding and waiting for the right animals took time and needing the money available to purchase as well.
Now we have too many 😄
Freya, aka Ladybug, was born in Tennessee. Don't forget that heifer tastes good too. ;) Cattle are a long-term investment. It will take about 7 years to recoup your costs. Pete at Just A Few Acres Farm has an awesome breakdown on how to price and make your farm sustainable. Search his UA-cam channel.
I couldn’t remember 😄 thanks Ruth
How can you eat those sweet girls lol😄
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan one bite at a time ;) LOL🤣🤣🤣
We watch Pete!
What does the whole A1&A2 and A2&A2 thing mean with Dexter cows?
It’s genes for the beta casein milk protein. A2/A2 is sought after for family milk cows since those proteins are supposedly easier to digest by some people.
I like your videos. Yes it takes a lot of start up money
But when you have your own meat in the freezer. Will be happy with how good the meat is where it came from.. you will never want the what is it meat from Walmart or wherever again. Stay safe and good luck with your family farm
Yes we totally agree! And it’s an investment that can be made incrementally over time. We’ve built our herd slowly over time.
Prez can see but not touche, hope your good at fixes fences you tease
I'm afraid this number shows I'll never have a farm! My county doesn't even allow chickens. Greta is still there??
Dr. Quin is nice looking!!
One more week for Greta 🥲
👍👍
If the Female is Not pulled, You can still get a horned calf from the two. Even if the Male is Pulled.
If the bull is hetero polled correct.
How does your herd do on the amount of pasture you have? How many can you stock per acre, grass and hay only or grain too?
They do just fine. What they have access to is enough to keep them clean in the summer and a snack. We are hoping to purchase some land from a neighbor soon.
We only recently started giving about 1.5 lbs of grain a day. Not because they need it but to see if it would cut down on the hay consumption. You can put 1-2 dexters per acre of high quality pasture. With our current program they only micro graze seasonally.
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan thanks for the info, like your setup!
I don't know how you do as many animals as you do on 6 acres, I think it's voodoo magic, lol. I'd be interested in a video on how much feed it takes to get you through the winter.
We are hopefully going to buying some land soon!
I am going to do an updated cost to raise pigs video after I send a group to the butcher. We are going to be down sizing our pigs to just support our freezer sales. So if you are interested in a gentle giant Tamworth boar you know who to contact 😂
Movie (UA-cam) magic lol
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan Tempting offer on the boar, lol. I have no interest in year round pigs. I'm going to cheap out and raise feeders. I watch too many youtube videos to fall into the pig breading trap.
@@TimBinns68 if you do get kunekunes those are the easiest.
Hey you wouldnt change a Thing because I know I wouldn't xxxx Cheers Denise- Australia
You are right we have too much fun😃
So! I think I may have the solution to our buying any more cows and pigs!! We agree to force ourselves to borrow each others' trailers! Yup! It wont matter that you'll have more room to fill using our 28 foot goose neck because you'll have to drive clear out to Montana to get it and vice versa!! Also, our rig had the axles turned over so the trailer sits up much higher in the air because the first owners used it to haul horses into the back country for hunting. Dexters could never jump high enough to get into our trailer and our cattle would be baffled at yours being smaller so they would refuse to go in. There ya go! Problem solved! 🤣😂
😂😂 excellent idea! Your trailer is probably buried under 10 feet of snow so we would be limited to maybe one month out of the year to have access to it 😄
The person I am buying steer calves from said they had a 3rd available and I could take it if we wanted it…. 😇 $350 each…
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan 🤣😂 FACT!
How do you graze that many cattle on six acres?
We don’t. Most of what our cattle eat is hay that we buy in. We are fortunate to be able to buy in lots of high quality hay from nearby farms. We do manage small pastures, graze cattle in crop residues, and cover crop with winter rye with the cows love.
Mike, I bet you'll wanna keep a heifer that is born on the farm!!
I don't see you selling them all. 😂
Lol no they will all go! 😂
I just came across some Aberdeen Angus and so far so good, homozygous polled. What are you getting for steers going to processing.
We charge $5/lb plus processing. Everyone we sell halves and wholes to get right back on our list.
What farm in TN was you buying from?
Mark and Kathy Chaney
Mr. President is the man!!
Can you rent a bull to come to your farm and breed?
Some people do. For bio security reasons we don’t offer stud services.
Can I DM you? I have some questions? Thanks.
Send an email to sweetbriarfarmllc@gmail.com
Why does a cow wear a bell around it's neck?
I don’t know why?
Do you need to buy a bull ? Or can you put money into Cows then pay for a bull to breed them?
People do offer stud services with their bulls. Or you can AI them. We have heard mixed results when doing AI. We prefer to keep a bull since Dexter bulls are typically easy keepers and efficient at getting the job done.
Is cattle math like chicken math?
Pretty much 😄
I think it’s even more twisted than goat math! -Kelsey
@@SweetBriarFarmMichigan 😄
u need more land for feed
Thanks for your input
Horns come from mom also
Only if our bull was heterozygous polled could any of the horned or heterozygous polled cows and heifers have horned calves. Depending on the cows genetics and the bulls genetics lead to different possible outcomes. But it is genetically not possible for any of our cows to calve animals with horns since our bull is homozygous polled. Meaning he has two copies of the polled gene and is a dominant trait.
Thanks for explaining that in a way that I can now understand
Registration is just another way people put their hands in your pockets for money and status in order to sell you the cow. I get it, but it's not really our thing on a hobby farm. We started our Dexter journey a few months ago with our first heifer and calf, and a bull. No registration. But if you can't see it's a Dexter, then go find a registered one and pay more.
To each their own.
Unless u r bound and determined to be eat dexter beef any steers will do, jerseys r milk cows
Not sure what you are getting at here? We are eating a jersey heifer right now… she wouldn’t get bred so we put her in the freezer.
