I hope this helps you all get stuck into some great plug ins! They aren’t essential, but they can definitely be fun, creative and inspiring to use!
I have to say I've been really struggling to find someone to explain all of this properly.. I was having a nightmare trying to get more than one VST into Ableton, but you explained the single folder pathway so well it worked for me first time! Thank you so much! Also I'm using the free version at the minute, so it does work (I saw some other threads about it not working in the lite version.)
thank you
You are the best
You explain so clearly and perfectly with every small detail. Wish I found your channel before:( Good luck!!!
thanks so much buddy, perfect
The absolute best trainer for navigating Ableton! Thank you!
Agreed 👍
The best of the best💞✊
By far the simplest and easiest tutorial for installing VST's. I can't believe how simple it actually was to do in the end. Cheers.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! I finally was able to find my Waves plugin in Ableton because of this video!!! Not even the tech support at Waves could help me. You are incredible!
Was just about to punch a hole in my monitor after two days of trying to get Serum to work on Ableton...then I came across your video, and got this to work like magic. I'm still in sheer disbelief! You're the best, and thx a bunch!
GOT YOUR BACK FAM!
I had the exact same situation!!!!! This video is such a life saver!!!!!!!
Same here ;-) all sorted,
that sounds like such a nice feeling
first go to ableton>>>>>get to preferences(ctrl , or cmd ,)>>>>>>go to plug-ins>>>>browse>>>>>>select the folder where ".dll " file of ur plugin is present
ctrl + what?
@@JustAndrei ctrl + ,(comma)
@@takhetabyo871 bro wtf is that, like what is comma?
@@manigu6040 comma(,) it is located in the right side of the keyboard (in my case)
@@takhetabyo871 thx bro
HUGE thank you, my man... I've searched high and low for the right tutorial
didn’t know apple made an emoji for you. that was really nice of them🐐
Something I learned about, as I was setting up a new PC, was that for VST2s, Ableton will accept shortcuts to the DLLs as legitimate sources of plugins.
What this means in practice, is that I have one folder that I install my plugins into, and another that houses shortcuts.
This offers me 2 benefits:
1. I can change the folder structure of the plugins to be something that is more sensible, on the fly, without affecting the installed plugin. That means you can re-order the plugins that show in Ableton, and existing projects will *not* be affected. This is fantastic for when you discover new ways or organising things.
2. Ableton *only* scans the shortcuts on start up. This greatly improves load-in speed, as you won't have all the further nested folders that a plugin may have.
Caveat: This technique does not work for VST3s. Shortcuts are completely ignored, and they have their own folder structure that you don't get much control over at all.
PsyFar Nice - let me know how you go! Plug in installations for me were such a problematic scenario when first starting out and I am very computer literate due to being a pc gamer - I imagine a lot of people struggle who aren’t so computer oriented, hence this video!
@@CollectiveIntelligenceMusic Just confirmed it, and have edited my reply above to reflect that, and what it can mean. I suspect that it would still be a setup people that have long just used the actual install folder could adjust to too, if they choose so.
Your the first one that I found after searching for a while to define what the letters VST stands for! Thank you
THANK YOU so much for this video. I watched another tutorial before this and he didn't explain it nearly as detailed and efficient as you and i was still clueless... until I watched your video. : ) Again, thanks so much for the help.

Bro may God bless you with long life,
You are such a great teacher. Thank you for this video.
For anyone wondering VST2 and VST3 are different versions of the same type of file. I think VST3 files work on the VST2 Folder, but doesn't work the other way around. So maybe that could be a problem if you thought the numbers were only a different way of organizing folders... NO, they are different.
VSTs are the little creatures that go into your wallet every night and steal all of your money...:p
That's true! Haha
Fantastic easy to follow tutorial, learned a lot from this, Thanks very much
Great video mate, thank you. Well explained, clear and concise. Top stuff! 👍

Thanks buddy! This what I needed. Thumbs up!
thank you man! I had mine in the wrong folder!
I can't get a single VST I download to actually be recognized in Ableton
I'm having the same problem
same.
I'm also having this issue.
@@shaunschweg Just watched a video before coming to this one- a neophyte like me giving advice? absurd but did you ask ableton to scan the new plugin once you installed it? the gentleman explained you had to do that first- maybe that helps you or maybe I'm blowing smoke.....went back and listened again- so once you've downloaded the plugin go to preferences then file and folders then press rescan plugins and then it should be there....
I've used plenty of DAWs and Ableton's approach to this is convoluted - or perhaps it's my recent move from Mac to Win. Who knows..
absolutely perfect tutorial !
yo you saved my life, thank you honestly
Collective intelligence indeed. Dropped a like and subbed
Thanks! Complete beginner, this helped alot!
Thanks for this video, Truly an inspiration.
If you using Lite on windows go to Prefrences > Plug-ins > VST3 Custom folder and browse (cuz most my plug-ins are VST3) > select at least one folder that has your VST3 plug-ins for me I just chose Waves > then it should scan and your waves plug-ins should be available > to get the rest of the plug-ins go back to Preferences click on Plug-ins again and this time go to Use VST3 Plug-in system folders > this will scan the rest of your plug-ins and put them in order for you.
Thank you so much for your video!! Very helpful :D

An easier trick to see if you've got a 64 or 32 bit is to hold the windows and the pause key on your keyboard until a window pops up, the info is written there. Succes guys! :)
