The real reason malware written for MacOS or Windows doesn't run on Linux is because Linux has different interfaces (syscall APIs and libc) that programs use to interact with the rest of the system. In practice this means that most of the actual malware code probably just needs to be run through a compiler again so it can bind against the Linux interfaces. However, if the malware needs a special exploit to get a foothold on your computer, the exploit isn't likely to impact multiple operating systems (or at least might require a decent amount of work to get said exploit working). Additionally, the common file paths where valuable user data may exist on Windows or Mac often simply do not exist, so a bit of additional effort is needed on the part of malware authors to make their malware work properly on Linux.
Writing this for the 1 or 2 other Linux users here that might be looking for it.
Really enjoyed the vid and the "explained like you're a middle schooler" editing style 😁

also don't let the internet fool you, there is *tons* of malware for Linux. The internet's entire backbone is Linux, why the hell wouldn't they write malware for it? You can't trust random packages from NodeJS, you gotta containerize everything.

So basically, linux is very secure unless the user is stupid, containers while allowing finer control also make stupid actions take longer.

Sorry, but I want to interrupt for a sec. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
This distinction is important when discussing Linux as opposed to Android or ChromeOS, both of with utilities Linux kernel, but less so for GNU utilities. 😊

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux." The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long." With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

Reducing the virus issue to "different file systems" is a bit misleading. Most viruses, worms, ransomware etc. that exists today, infests the ecosystem of the Microsoft Office suite, plus Active Directory shared filesystems. The problem is aggravated by many corporations who look at IT security through middle management checklists and buzzwords, instead of giving their technical staff enough room to do things properly. It also used to be, a long time ago, that the Windows permission system was inferior, but that hasn't been the case for decades - provided that it is set up properly. And finally, as you have hinted at, Linux' Open Source approach is really useful in fixing security issues as soon as possible - while Microsoft's closed-source, for-profit approach time and again gets in the way of that.

      Yesn't.
Both Torvalds and Stallman came at this problem from different angles:
Stallman wanted to create an operating system and wrote a whole bunch of UNIX-compatible tools for the end user to use. He also wrote the Hurd-Kernel but it wasn't as stable and feature rich as the whole suite of user space tooling he created. Basically it was created out of necessity to have a FOSS kernel that ties everything together.
Torvalds wanted to create a UNIX-compatible kernel to use a whole bunch of UNIX-tooling on top of that. So he focused more on the kernel development.
In the end they both paired up with their projects, Stallman having done a lot of early user space tooling and Torvalds providing a stable kernel.

I think the thing about open vs closed source that people don't get is just how big the difference is in the number of people working on the codebase. Don't get me wrong Microsoft's a huge corporation. They can afford to pay thousands and thousands of engineers to work on Windows. However believe it or not there are even more people who work on Linux. Some of them are full-time paid employees whose job it is to write code for the Linux kernel from places like Intel and AMD, who both contribute to the free open source project. Others are volunteers who maybe just submit patches every once in a while. But either way with the code being open there are just more people actively working on it all the time. That makes it better code than closed source operating systems. Not just in terms of security but in terms of everything about the code quality.

I think saying that Linux has X% of market share is a bit misleading, since most Linux distros are free and you don't technically "buy" them. (Unless you're running a server and want to purchase support, that's a different matter.) I don't know the exact percentage of people running Linux, but I'm guessing that number will only increase, especially since Microsoft has introduced their "Recall" spyware. People are getting tired of that crap.

Linux as of recent, is also really good for gaming.
I personally use linux as my main way of gaming. As if the game doesn't have anticheat, its basically 100% supported.
If a game has anti cheat, its kinda a 40 - 60 right now. Some games work like Helldivers 2, Apex legends, Battlebit, etc. But other games like Rust, fortnite, etc don't work.
VR is also kinda hit or miss, its great when it works, but not so great when its broken.
As I usually do when I talk about linux. If you want to give it a try heres a few distro's I recommend as a seasoned linux nerd.
    Beginner :
Linux mint : Windows 7 like, has that oldish feeling. Good for beginners
Kubuntu : More 10 / 11 like. Looks more modern. Another good distro for beginners.
Ubuntu : MacOS like, if you ever wanted a macOS experience, ubuntu is a good choice. Also good for beginners.
Advanced, I do not recommend using these unless your tech savvy, and are whiling to deal with the terminal often.
CachyOS : My personal distro. Arch based, meaning you get the most updated software, that may be unstable.
It also offers a easy installer, and many desktop environments to suit what you like, and your needs.
Garuda linux : It's a gaming based distro, with many tools that make this Arch based distro a bit more user friendly than CachyOS.
Expert, Seriously not recommended, unless you want no hair.
Arch : A very do it yourself distro, support forums are generally toxic towards new comers due to the elitism of using Arch.
Linux from scratch. : Just no. You will not want to be living.

a few things that technically aren't 100% correct, but definitely the most fun explanation of "Linux" I've ever seen/heard!
for a (probably incomplete) list of things that I noticed:
    1. RMS like to call "Linux" GNU/Linux or GNU+Linux. GNU has the basic system utilities and Linux is the Kernel, as GNU's Hurd Kernel isn't that usable (yet)
    2. When somebody says they installed Linux, they do probably meant they installed a whole Distro, but that most probably includes the Linux Kernel (else it wouldn't really be called a LINUX distro), so, technically they *did* install Linux aswell, so they're not wrong, it's just not the whole story
idk why I made that list, i just kind of felt like i wanted to

Linux has its excellent use cases. Overall they are great for those who value their privacy since windows is basically spyware nowadays. However, its absolute hell to try to game on, tho most productivity uses can be relatively easy to accomplish. I dual boot linux mint and a tweaked version of windows together.
3:07 is actually a good thing as it means there are likely a lot of very skilled individuals using that distro who look into the code and find vulnerabilities and can then either fix it themselves or report it back to the creators which means it will get patched much quicker provided the devs of that distro actually take it seriously and still actively maintain it well.

Your video was good. But would have been great if it was faster for the modern attention span starved brains. You can try reducing idle time between dialogues

I mean you're not "incorrect" if you say that you installed linux, you're just not being specific. Saying you installed "windows" is just as unspecific, because you could have any windows version.

Hey! Desktop Linux has made strides in recent years! Windows kept breaking after updates for me and after I switched (and learned a lot) I've been happily running Linux for my desktop and servers for the last 3-4 years :)
