    Living with parents is a good way to save money. Having a child around family and having the support of family, parents in particular is golden. You are fortunate to have the support of family.

    Haha..."we want the child to become a part of our lives, rather than us changing our lives to do kids things."
    Oh man...I'm sure it wasn't meant the way it sounded, but I laughed a little :P.
    When you have kids, your whole life revolves around them...where is laundry, where is the potty, where is the closest playground, who are their friends and do you like their parents (I'm learning right now you don't get to pick their friends).
    I'm totally on board with the idea that you are guiding their life, I moved to a whole new country on a new continent to give my little one the best life I can for them...and it was a tough choice, moving away from family and friends, but it was a journey we're taking together, because it's a journey that's meaningful to all of us. I can see that you want to share your travels with your little one because you (rightly) feel that it will be meaningful to share that with them.
    But just the phrasing made me snort...

    • @susannegerber7360

      i did not laugh, actually. What does it mean? That their kids have no time for a childhood? That they have to share this kind of a grown up life from the beginning? Sounds sad to me.

    Oh hey, I have one parenting tip to share: Please keep a journal for your child. Cute things they say or do, life events that happen and how you and/or they react, emotionally, to them, etc...You think you'll remember stuff, and you think you'll catch it all on video or photos, but you won't and you won't. My girl is 22, and I still occasionally add journal entries, and soon I will turn it over to her to read whenever she is ready. Meanwhile, I can't tell you how many times I have looked back on entries from when she was little and find some adorable or profound thing she said, which I can guarantee I would not have remembered if not documented. And along the way, I also added different article, song lyric, horoscope, etc...clippings to the folder in the journal, and some bits of my own life guidance, as well. I always give this tip to new parents and they always seem grateful as no one has told them this before. This, and the fact that "This, too, shall pass", whether it's a "good" or a "bad" phase. Obvious, but as parents, we still need the reminder, sometimes. xox

    17:14 I was gob-smacked by this question. You handled it very well. There's nothing wrong with having 2 children, these replace the parents on the planet without growing the population overall. In the meantime, you can raise those children to be careful consumers and to be friends of the environment. Thanks for your candour in answering all these questions, Leah & Levi. You're great people and I reckon your kid's going to be awesome, too. 🙂 PS. The names Ferdinand, Jett, Jeffrey and Noah all mean "traveller". Then there's St Christopher, the patron saint of travellers. #JustSaying 😀

    I don’t think there’s anything wrong with changing your life for your baby. Tried the whole baby fitting into my life approach turns out she doesn’t enjoy going out for dinner, late nights, or being out of her routine for naps 😂

    • @thatblvckhippie1911
      @thatblvckhippie1911 11 місяців тому +1

      Totally but depends on the tiny human too. Mine loves those things and would be so relaxed when we were out or excited when we'd do nature stuff. I was similar as a babe. My mom called me her little gogo baby lol because I loved being out and about having adventures with her and alone (with friends). Sometimes I feel bad because I don't take mine on as many adventures as my mom took me.

    • @gemandblueskies
      @gemandblueskies 11 місяців тому

      @@thatblvckhippie1911 totally, all baby personalities are different. I have a lot of friends whose babies love just chilling in their stroller for hours watching the world quietly and it makes it easier to go out for dinner or late night outings. Mine likes running around, can’t sit still and is very grumpy if she misses her bedtime. Mine also loves nature a lot but is more settled with routine and her own bed :)

    So excited for you both!! One thing I would ask is that as you build your new rig, you hire a CPST to check the car seat you install for the little one is safe. We found when planning a big trip with our 9 month old that the only real safe option was to tow something with an actual car (so we could use LATCH etc) rather than trying to rig our car seat into the back of an RV and it not actually being safe for the babe.
    Travelling with kids is not easy but it’s so worth it! Good luck!!

    Hey guys! Thanks for this thoughtful, well versed Q&A. My parents are in Nanaimo as well (right by the Gabriola ferry). Maybe next time I get over to visit them I'll see you on the Seawall there!
    Since I started following your channel, I've realized that we probably hold some vastly different political ideas /views, and yet our values, not so different - in fact surprisingly similar.
    I've gotta admit, I truly appreciate your ability to diplomatically respond to what someone from my side of the fence might think of as lunacy, lol.
    It reveals not only common sense, but a level of respect that I believe is truly important (and also often lacking). I will accept that as a teachable moment so that I might pause before refering to someone as a 'crank'.
    On the other hand, it is also true, that, as a society, we seem to accept and even promote a lot of dogma and claims that are unfounded. An example, is that public schools give students credit for protesting "man made climate change due to burning of fossil fuels" -- the protests involve blocking all traffic over the Lion's Gate bridge for 5 hours on a sweltering hot Friday afternoon and causing enormous gridlock on either end of the bridge -- hello -- not helping! We all should (and most of us do) care about the environment and pollution. Less dogma and more common sense and courtesy will serve us all better.
    Cheers, and Welcome Home!...from North Vancouver.

    Really appreciated your answer about having children and the environment! I hate how environmentalists keep repeating the overpopulation myth when the real issue is overconsumption - the countries that have the biggest impact on the environment (so mainly western countries/the Global North) have had declining birth rates for years. Of course it's good that more people are making conscious choices about whether they want to have kids, but people really should stop shaming others for whatever choice they make! I loved following your journey for the past year and I can't wait to see what you're doing next - I'm sure you'll be wonderful parents raising wonderful eco-conscious kids 💚

    re traveling with a kid. we travelled with o8rn7 year old from UK to USA, Canada and New Zealand as we were home schooling. We became even closer as a family, experiences we still talk about and he learned so much about the real world. I miss that but now he is 16 he wants to travel more and is into photography like his dad. We travelled in an RV the same size as the Canadian one you had. we also had one where the side went out when static. We are not rich and I am super ethical and were able to do it as ethically as we could. RE kid numbers. I agree to reduce the amount of children but The one I was luck to have comes with intention and encourging him to live intentionally. Good luck guys. xx Sorry if this doesnt all make sense but I am typing without my glasses which is somewhere downstairs .....

    Just found out my future wife (we get married this Saturday) is pregnant. We liked to go on big adventures and have always said that a child would not get in the way of future adventures, we just have to carry and support the child through that as well. It’s for our benefit and theirs. We don’t give up anything of ours, and our child will experience things that some adults our age have never done. Win win! Thanks for your videos, and best luck with the rest of the pregnancy journey!

    My husband and I's choice to not have children isn't driven by empowerment or guilt, but rather this deep fear of a child's future in a world suffering from climate change. The guilt part would be the potential anxiety and fear the child would live with, resulting from our seemingly selfish decision to have them. I have gone back and forth for years, but I already see that fear in my niece's and nephew's minds, which would break me. I hope we collectively leave the world better than we found, so those children and your future child may thrive.

    People think having kids is bad for the environment, but alot of the things kids need can be bought second hand, or hand me downs. Plus if you teach your kids to take care of the environment, garden etc. using cloth diapers helps with the carbon footprint too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      True! Children change your goals. But that’s ok - massive transitions have that effect. You really cannot know how it will be until you have that child and learn that particular little being and their particular needs.
      This is not to say you can’t travel with kids - in the mid 2000s, my spouse and I spent 7months travelling through SE Asia with 3 kids ages 6 and under, but the pace is different. I will say SE Asia in general is very family friendly!

    • @aidanknight

      @@mitrajordan Totally! Travel with kids is great!
      You will figure out what works for you and your family - every kid is different and being flexible is a big part of parental life. That being said, you *will* adjust your life to suit them, they are gravitational forces that make travelling, home life, everything different and more complicated lol

    The "aren't kids bad for the planet" question I hope was asked by a highschooler because it's pretty obvious that if you're a person that even considers the concept of your environmental impact...you should have kids. If you haven't seen Idiocracy, you should at least look up the concept it puts forth that has a real truth to it. Environmentalists, scientists, people with good intentions should be having as many kids as possible to prevent future generations soley being made up of mindless consumers. The person asking that question should try to have an original thought for once and not just regurgitate something they heard on twitter. Humans are far to narcissistic and ununified to come together as one people to save the planet, it's going to take a small minority smart enough to make the major changes and technological advances required to continue our society as it is today.

  • @asthmatictuna
    @asthmatictuna 11 місяців тому

    The kids question interesting. You’re perfectly entitled to have them, and I wish you both the absolute best, but the species would survive if you didn’t :P The main ones to question should be those with the highest per capita emissions, with Canada being 7th behind the petrostates. Also again, I hope you’ve had an amazing year, but while boring and not great for content, you must admit it’s more sustainable to live in one place. You might be downsized living on the road but stationary downsized is still more sustainable. Transport is Canada’s 2nd largest emitter. Tourism is 8% of global emissions and transport is 16% but with 50% of the world's population living on less than $7 a day and 25% living on less than $3.50, heck even 60% of US population living paycheck to paycheck, travel for leisure really is a modern affluence that only a small number can afford. People complain about the developing world having so many kids, but with 1 US IT worker having the same emissions as 20 Ugandan subsistence farmers, it clearly has a different impact. Regardless, it’s not fair to expect Leah or Levi to ‘save the world’ nor hold any other individuals responsible (unless they’re billionaires) 😉
