If only the enemy general had been as much of a boss as Iga, they could have duelled to the death and solved the issue right there without any further loss of life
(In ancient times such as Rome and apparently Japan, it was common for the leaders of opposing armies to duke it out one on one, mano y mano to resolve a conflict, and spare their men. They of course had to both be badasses though which apparently sadly doesn't appear to be the case here - and look at that, history remembers Iga, and not the other guy...)
On a random note, during my history studies I came across this very intriguing explanation for the kamikaze pilots in WW2, and why there were so many young men willing to undertake a suicide mission
It turns out the Japanese government was like 'it's what a Samurai would do! What you waiting for'
And the barely-adult guys were like 'f*ck yeah! I'll fly my plane into an enemy ship if it's what a samurai would do!'
Yes, some of them weren't that enthusiastic but the age-old combination of propaganda, pressure, and shame made a lot of them climb into their cockpits anyway, trembling with fear about to go to their deaths in what was clearly by now an unwinnable fight and only prolong the inevitable loss of the war amid mounting casualties
You have to applaud their bravery. They must have known this but were still loyal enough to go through with it to the end

@@adzi6164 I am talking about the "Chrysanthemum Taboo" its basically an unofficial law that forbids you from making fun or portraying the emperor in a negative way
Its unofficial because techinically the goverment has no such law but most japanese deeply respect the emperor (to an unhealthy degree if you ask me) this is the reason why you don't see the emperor in any anime

Keep in mind that its *unoffical* there is no goverment backing about its just a popular belief to be honest i would not be suprised if this was actually suppressed during the imperial era when the emperor was actually in charge although the themes of better dying than surrendering would probably be very attractive to the imperial military

I read a story about a samurai that got surrounded by his enemy. Not wanting to die by their hands, he cut his own head off with his short sword. The account says he made the cut, then his body held his head up by the hair for all to see and he glared at the enemy before collapsing.
