  • Rachel Willis-Sørensen and 2017 Richard Tucker Award-winner Nadine Sierra sing the Act III duet "Sull’aria" from Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro.
For almost 40 years, the Richard Tucker Award has been granted to an American singer poised on the edge of a major national and international career, with a list of winners that reads like a "who's who" of American opera stars, including Renée Fleming, Stephanie Blythe, Lawrence Brownlee, Matthew Polenzani and Christine Goerke.

I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't wanna know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and it makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you those voices soared, higher and farther than anybody in a grey place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made these walls dissolve away....and, for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.

When I was a kid I found a cassette tape walking home from school that had only this song on it. I must have listened to it hundreds of times and never knew the words or composer. Every time I hear this song it gives me such a warm feeling. Such a beautiful song.

The first forty or so comments do not even mention the composer....as though we just expect perfection from Mozart without even acknowledgment.....truly great performance ladies by the way...

Saw a live concert for first time at the State Opera House, Vienna. Marriage of Figaro. I cried tears at seeing and hearing the genius of Mozart. Best part was knowing the libretto. April 2022.

It is beyond belief that WQXR would post this without listing their entire names. It is their vocal talent on display. And then the non sequitur about Richard Tucker award. Did one or both win this award? What in the world. NADINE SIERRA. RACHEL WILLIS-SORENSON.

The fact is that I had been listening to classical songs from our local radio stations when I was a little boy... Not hearing any word wasn't an issue, I only cared about the sounds from the background. Not knowing the composer, was never, an issue but the voices from the oratorio. Growing up to finding the likes of Pavarotti and Bocelli and etc from the Internet gave me a relief. Till this moment, from my phone to my home and car, all I listen to is songs of this nature. The likes of Bartoli and Fleming, Mary Poppins ( Julie Andrew), Beethoven, Pachelbel's Canon, Handel, Mozart etc... Give me excess of these songs 🎵 I am well pleased. Blessings 🙌

Remains one of my favorite duets in Buffa to this day. I return over and over to it when I want to hear sublime beauty. (and by the way - for those that don't know the opera - The Countess is dictating a letter to Sussana to trick the count - but the undertone is just how much she still loves him, cad that he is, and as she says with memories of the first love - he will understand). God I love it!

Perfect. Genius Mozart. I love this duet so much. Contessa and Susanna's voices should always share this kind of compatible warmth. It helps to justify the plot they're hatching to expose Il Conte. Bravissimi.

First time a heard this was in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" ua-cam.com/video/p8STa0EoUwI/v-deo.html where the leading actor (Tim Robbins) made the other inmates listen to it.
