Got Goosebumps... I played this for countless hours. Not knowing much about it but figured everything out as I went. I’m so happy I came back to this memory. Good times back then.
The pinnacle of PC gaming, I don't care how good graphics and gameplay get there will never be classics like this ever again. This era of gaming didn't last long enough.
Who would've thought this was a game people thought was modern back in 1987. Now-a-days it's changed. I miss this era of games because of how much effort went into them. That work is seen through the nostalgia we get right now. Thank you Police Quest and SWAT series, your names are never forgotten.
As someone who's trying to use corporate software to build one single Sierra-like screen with a couple of NPCs and items to interact with (it's essentially just barebones coding with few amenities since this software was never supposed to be used for anything like this), even something as rudimentary as _leaving the damn pause menu_ is challenging and time-consuming to code. So many pitfalls that I weren't even aware of tend to keep me stuck for hours on end. For instance, even typing isn't straightforward since even a briefly pressed key triggers the same character signal over multiple iterations (so it's not really "w" that you type by pressing the key for a split second, more like "wwwwwwwwwwwwww"), so you need to think up a way around this. It's just thinking, thinking and thinking. I've really grown to respect the Sierra guys for what they did at the time. It may look unimpressive today, but so much crunchy shit goes into every single frame, you don't even have an idea.
My dad used to let me play this as a kid but only for 20 min a week so I never made much progress. Thanks for posting so I can finally know how this damned game ends.
The old Sierra games were awesome, Space Quest and King's Quest were great too. Had the Lytton map up on the wall in the computer room. I always died a least once a game by not doing the damned safety check on the car!
The actor that plays Sonny Bonds in Police Quest 3 bears a striking resemblance to Val Kilmer. I believe there's a picture of the actor in the game manual for Police Quest 1. Or maybe it's the Police Quest 3 manual. He also looks vaguely like Kilmer in PQ1 VGA.
This one gets me right in the feels. I played this game for hours. I didn't understand much of the lingo, nor the whole story (I wasn't aware of drugs and crime when I played this). But I remember I had found a walkthrough and typed my way to the end. It took much longer than 1:33:57. and I don't ever recall getting all the points. You somehow surpassed it haha.
I loved this game when I was a little kid! I used to play it on my grandmother's computer with my sisters back when I could barely read yet. The car was so damn hard to drive and I don't think I ever really understood what I was supposed to be doing
I played this game in 1993 when i was 7 years old on our IPC Dynasty PC. I don’t know how i managed to reach so far in the game without internet walkthroughs. And i don’t know what i’m doing here now as a 32 year old.
Oh, this takes me back. Probably the very first computer game I ever played, or at least remembered playing. I'm curious though; is this a new port? In the version I played, you'd get an automatic Game Over in the drugs bust if you didn't a) draw your gun before interrupting (because both the pusher and the kid would run) b) radio Laura before or during the interruption to tell her to grab anyone trying to bail (because the guy would catch her by surprise and get away) or c) read the kid his rights before questioning him (because not doing so apparently invalidates anything he says) Ah, Sierra. Man, the satisfaction you could get from completing their games really was second to none...
1986-1987 were the years that Sierra really bombarded the gaming world with some of the most memorable text based RPGs: BC, KQ3, SQ1, SQ2, LSL1, PQ1...SQ3 released in 1989 was my absolute favourite
It's a text adventure with a graphical interface, not exactly an RPG. Or, an adventure game. RPGs are significantly different enough. The broad usage of the term could apply to so many things, too.
Those turn of the nineties games were good learning material because the dialogue tended to be short and concise and most importantly, it was you who prompted it to pass. Later, after they introduced voice acting and took away the control of the dialogue box speed from the player, spontaneous dictionary lookups became all but impossible.
i remember playing this game with my brother when we were kids and my brother walked up to that guy in the shower and the guy said "what are you looking at" man that made us laugh so hard for some reason!!!
Loving all your waklthrough videos! They bring back fond memories of gaming past for me. My one eternal regret. I won't live long enough to see a Sierra Classics Collection of their best point and click series like this, King's Quest, Space Quest... and yes, Leisure Suit Larry. I loved this game! Sadly I didn't get the others ones past this, but this I got from Radio Shack on sale once and played it through. Good memories.
The quickest and funniest way to die in this game is to type in the commend 'drop pants'. Also you can make Sonny sing in the shower.. I think it goes.. "strangers in the night... la de da de da..."
This game was just amazing and beautiful back in the day. I remember watching my older brother playing it because back then he was the only one of us who could understand English. Good times lol
My partner showed me this game as an example of what he grew up playing and I am honestly amazed 😅 there is 7 years between us and I thought he grew up playing Spyro and Mario like I did 🤣 I guess not, this is amazing! So different!
I played this game for weeks on end - it was funny, smart and engaging! You had to think, not just hit random stuff. It’s also the reason I know English so well. Good times indeed.
It's exactly the same thing except. She reveals to you that she really is the Commissioners daughter etc. But after you put down the phone nothing happens.
i remember playing this in the old days, i made it pretty far.. but i didn't see the last part yet, i just did.. thank you so cool and so much memories!!
I remember when I was a kid playing this, my keyboard had left, right, up, down and it also had the diagonal arrows. Never see that anymore. Im being that's what they've got. But like you say, kudos to the driving skills!
I loved this game and I played it a lot during the late 80s, early 90s. It is a wonder that I got as far as I did considering English is not my native tongue. Back then I didn't know more than basic English as a kid.
Seriously a blast from the past. King's quest too, don't know if he uploaded that video too. How did you know what to do in this game, like the commands, where to go, etc.
When I was a kid I got stuck at the Hotel because I couldn't call a taxi and I didn't know how to get the taxi phone number. It was very frustrating. I live outside the US and had a pirate copy. I almost gave up in despair, and as a last resort I decided to dial phone numbers from 0 to 999, since I knew that there's a number 911. And... BANG! 411!!!! Still love this game.
This was a great game! We had so much fun playing PQ1, PQ2 and PQ3. This version has more than the standard PC single voice audio. Sounds better than what we played
I remember getting stuck for the longest time at the drunk driver and had no clue what I was supposed to do. I eventually bought the guide and it told me that I have to "administer field sobriety test."
My brother and I loved this game and the Space Quest and Kings Quest also. Soo hard. We ended up buying a guide that talked you through how to complete the game 😝
"Beat Cop" by Crow's Nest comes to my mind (Android; iPhone (Google Play store); the IBM PC and probably for other Video Game consoles (Sony Playstation 5, Nintendo Switch, XBox X). It was a 1980's era/period Point and Click (Text) adventure game, based in Brooklyn, New York.
I always had pirated versions of these Sierra games as a kid, so I was never able to progress very far because you needed to know certain phrases to use, etc. But man, do I remember driving around and stopping at the various places. You could interact with some more of the characters than what was done in this video. For example, in the locker room, you can talk to the guy in the shower and the guy sitting on the toilet...I think the janitor too. Not much happens with these interactions, but they are kind of fun regardless. These old games seem so tedious now with all the little things you need to do.
Probably because he is trying to show the fastest way to play and get points. He wasn't doing anything that didn't get his ass points. You got no points for the things you were talking about.
Yep. Too many of those who played pirated versions never realized that if they actually installed the game on the computer instead of using the appropriate floppy disc to play the game, they'd be able to progress.
@@joakimkempe1129 I progressed to a certain point, but there were certain phrases you needed to know that, I think, were in the manual or a separate booklet that came with the game. I remember finding out about one, "do field sobriety test," or something like that. As a young teenager, I had never even heard those words before so it would have been impossible for me to assume that would be something I had to do.
Kings Quest and Space Quest i see clear references and spoofs, Im not really sure how much police and detective TV or movies there was before this....whatever "just the facts" was, Columbo, the Pierce Brosnon 80s show....I guess the French Connection....what else? Are their references in this series?
I got stuck on this game as a 13 year old and wound up calling the toll number and went through the prompts to get a solution. So glad my parents didn't scour that phone bill as it must have been a few bucks for a call to California from the northeast. The place I got stuck was at the hotel I didn't know how to get rid of Sweet Cheeks. I see here you called Morgan and he told you to call a cab for her. I never called him and I remember you couldn't leave her in the hotel, you couldn't take her with you to the poker game, and you couldn't just tell her to leave. The Sierra hotline told me to call a cab for her, then I had to figure out how to call a cab and another clue told me to call 411 and ask for the number for the Lytton Cab Company. Sheesh...
The graphics and sound got much better in PQ2 (16 color EGA) and PQ3 (256 color VGA) but the driving in PQ1 was so much better than the later two games!
I used to watch my brother play this game when I was 4 until I started playing it myself and for the life of me I couldn’t figure out what the purpose of this game was. All I knew was that it was mesmerising, no music, open and close doors, give commands to improve my English, go random places and the game is over either when I crash while driving or get caught eavesdropping on the deal in the park.
Same here. Used to go to my cousins house (who was 6 years old than me) to play this when i was a kid, and no had idea wtf i was doing lol. Did not even speak English at that time either.
I was too young when I played this game (8 maybe?) and several times I tried to pull that sports car over but thought that getting in front of it was the way to do it. (Police in movies would yell at people to pull over from the side and then get in front of them) Needless to say they crashed into me several times and I finally figured out getting behind them was the way to go. I was dumb. Probably still am.
I definitely never made it past the first five minutes of this game. As a kid I could never understand how the driving game worked. Took me a minute even now!
Still love the text line commands games. Later on they became dialog based which took out the fun of just trying all kinds of silly things. Also the humor in these games was ace.
They could have had some good PQ games had Ken Williams and Jim Walls not had a falling out. Thats why PQ4 had a different director and it showed. I liked the Sonny Bonds trilogy and its good they at least kept his character going in Swat 2. Too bad we'll never get a revival of this series.
49:40 you left out the part where you have to USE RADIO after you load and draw gun but BEFORE you say halt. I had to look this up on several guides until I found out the solution.
Sierra, wow haven't thought of that name in years honestly. I remember they were pretty much the PC gaming authority when I was growing up, as Electronic Arts seemed to be for consoles at the time in my opinion (and still are apparently), whatever happened to Sierra games? Looks like I'm off to the great wizard of Google for answers..
I had this game on my Tandy 1000ex back in the 80's. I never beat is because there was no save feature and I always crashed or made a mistake. The furthest I have ever gotten was identifying the body at cotton cove! You crash the car and thats it, you have to start all over.
I remember I talked to everyone in this game and the other female uniformed officer would tell me if I kept wearing my cologne she was going to jump me. Lol.
Got Goosebumps... I played this for countless hours. Not knowing much about it but figured everything out as I went. I’m so happy I came back to this memory. Good times back then.
Exactly. Said well
This brings back a LOT of memories.
*Sniffs line of cocaine* SAME HERE!!!
Tigerman1138 damn, for real...
This game is why I became a racist cop.
Maaaaan sleepless nights playing this game

space quest in particular...i grew up on those, perfect balance of adventure and humour.
Sonny Bonds was a true legend in the law enforcement world, the police of today couldn't even carry his jockstrap!

I remember they were pretty much the PC gaming authority when I was growing up, as Electronic Arts seemed to be for consoles at the time in my opinion (and still are apparently), whatever happened to Sierra games? Looks like I'm off to the great wizard of Google for answers..
Ha, I love how you pretty much spend the whole game speeding. ;-)
did you Know That you can Take your Clothes OFF in the Police Station
Right in Front of Everybody and the Game ENDS Because of That 😁
I had this game on my Tandy 1000ex back in the 80's. I never beat is because there was no save feature and I always crashed or made a mistake. The furthest I have ever gotten was identifying the body at cotton cove! You crash the car and thats it, you have to start all over.
This is bloody amazing. Thank you.
Amazing how you kept winning all the hands.
I had Police Quest 1 2 3 and 4. Never continued on to SWAT though.
Love this game
Looks awfully similar to Leisure Suit Larry, must have missed this one!
This is the first game I ever played. Remember I had to ask some of the big kids from school to help me, as I couldn't understand or write English.
I remember I talked to everyone in this game and the other female uniformed officer would tell me if I kept wearing my cologne she was going to jump me. Lol.
I still remember this on my Tandy 1000 ex.
