Gotta give props to my iPad for being able to reproduce that maddening CRT whine, people back in the day got so used to that and fluorescent light buzz that they would argue that they didn’t make noise
It's a good day when you upload. Good to see you back again. Great video too, I recently got myself a Model M keyboard (2nd generation, manufactured July 17th, 1992) and it's absolutely fantastic, though I'm aware the Model Fs feel better to a degree.
Thanks man. Model Ms are pretty sweet too, I think it really comes down to personal preference. The model F just has a lighter feel. My personal favorite is probably the M2 actually, they get a lot of hate but I personally find them to type the nicest out of any IBM buckling spring keyboards.
@@ScanLinesAU Man where do you even find so much retro PCs. Usually they are sold online not cheap at all or in a rather good and preserved condition yet you still find them so new looking. I need to know where you are getting them from..
Now this is a really cool channel. Reminds me of when I was starting playing with old computers back in the late 90s and early 2000s. It used to be really easy to find these, and then I noticed they became rarer. So when I build my barn, I've started collecting every single computer I come across in the trash. I figure I'll let people dig them out in 20 years when the are actually rare. And then it'll be a really great barn-find of computers saved from the trash.
I got a 5160 in 2013 and have done a few period correct updates. NEC V20 replacing the 8088, pulled the slow but still working 10MB Seagate ST-412 and Xebec controller, installed a 40MB Seagate ST-251 and Western Digital hard drive controller, added an adlib card, and got the clock card working again. For now it has a VGA card until I can get an EGA setup. DOS 3.3 and Windows 2.03
nice video, thanks ! You can transfer files to old computers using null modem LPT cable and Norton Commander 4,0 or laplink software - I use good old Nortonn Comander, as it's anyway installed on all my retrocomputers)
Love this machine. This brings back memories! I found a 5160 in near mint condition with an NEC monitor (made a video like 8 years ago about it). I think it had a VGA card and a near silent 10MB hard drive. Never did much with it, but it was a joy to own :)
Oh man. I miss those old power switches... Also this reminded me of my first pc, a 286 with a whopping 31mb hard drive. Being a nerd, obviously I overclocked it from 6 to 8 mhz and added a 80287 :D
Hello, nice to see you back. Your videos keep getting better and better. I just watched a video from ctrl alt Res about a similar machine, he modded the PSU using modern internal parts just like Jan Beta use to do with 8bit computers power supplies, what are your take on this?
Thanks! Haven't seen either of those videos, not sure what he's moding exactly. He has a 5150 though, PSU is significantly different on those systems since they are much lower wattage compared to the 5160 PSU. Also, they contain RIFA capacitors most of the time, which need to be replaced. My PSU surprisingly has no RIFA capacitors.
I would love to buy a system like that but I’m a high school student without a lot of money and I’m also saving up for an Sun/Oracle server, most people think that Sun servers cost a fortune witch is true but the Sparc T4-2 models only cost around 400-500 US Dollars, at least without Hard drives.
Haha well I'm only 16 myself actually. I know what you mean though, these systems seem way more out of reach especially when you're younger. If you'd have asked me 2 years ago whether or not I would have one of these by now I would've definitely said no, but sometimes things just fall into place, which this computer did. Sometimes the things you're after most are in the places you least expect them. Good luck on the Sun server though, those systems are pretty cool. I've got an Ultra 5 myself.
@@ScanLinesAU Good luck on you’re channel to, it’s nice knowing that I’m not the only one who likes to mess around with computers twice my age, I’m 15.
Puberty. Actually, this is the first vid by this guy I've seen, so my first impression was "Wow, he sounds really young to have a computer this old.", so it's funny to think he apparently sounded even _younger_ before this.
Please post an email we can send a one time payment paypal to. I don’t want to send hardware from across the pond. These memories are fond to us 40 somethings. But once we are gone it’s just you.

It should be cleaned a little bit.
Haha yeah, it took me a while to repair the machine, completely forgot to clean it before making the vid after all the work i'd already done to it
Seems, your passion is away
