Hello and welcome to the Scan Lines UA-cam channel! Here you'll find vintage computer related videos, with a focus on hardware specifically, however sometimes the odd software video will be published.
New videos are published once every fortnight on Monday at roughly 10:00am AEST, but sometimes I'll put out a video in between if I have something to share.
I’ve been really interested in vintage computers for about 5 years, and I’ve been collecting them for about 3-4 years so far.

not only gf2 mx was cheaper but also it had hardware t&l compared to voodoo 4 so that also one of the main factors why gf2 mx sold so well compared to voodoo 4
Came to find out about replacing caps - shocked to see its the exact same board I have! great video. just ordered some replacements and going to give it a go!.
hey kid we need numbers...
Very cool to see a young lad repairing vintage electronics we have to preserve them they are becoming more rare and valuable :) good work young man!👍👍👍👍👍
Can it use WarpStream where you can use UA-cam in flash instead of HTML5 like it's 2007?
Hello, thanks for the videos but maybe you can help me, I have a Diamond Monster 3D ll 12mb, The card works, the driver it is detected, I can enter the settings without it freezing. 3DMark99 passes all the tests finishing at 640x480 and 800x600 but the problem comes in 3Dmark2000, at 640x480 it passes all the tests and finishes but at 800x600 in test 21 it freezes and stays there. Playing Quake 2 it works fine for a while at 640x480 for about 10 minutes then it freezes, at 800x600 it freezes in a few seconds, what could be the problem?
11:01 IS WINDOWS🪟 98
One of my first computers!
As someone who built these back in the day. Good build, props for having the gusto to deal with the old hard drive. It is definitely a mix of parts you could have seen back in the day particularly late in a systems life. The only thing missing would be the 2X IDE CDROM drive. A few tips. 1: Put the standoffs in and slide the motherboard in. Takes a little practice. 2: Interesting way to rig up the fan. We literally never added extra fans back in the day, but I guess it is okay to preserve vintage equipment. 3: Put the screws in the HD before you put the MB tray in. Those old drives really needed four screws on all sides. (Though in full admission I was lazy back in the day and many times on my own stuff, I only used two LOL). 4: As far as VLB master. I never payed attention to that.. and I never saw it made much difference. Running the Multi IO card cables around the video card was a PAIN, and I just didn't do it. Video always went in the bottom, multi IO in the top. 5: Those slots never quite lined up back in the day. You learned to futz with it. Not a consideration today. But I always kept the modem and sound card as far away from each other as possible. So sound was always at the very bottom, and the tiny 8 bit modem always in that top 8 bit slot on my board. Here is what my 486 Build consisted of back in the day. (To my best recollection, and at the end) QDI 486 motherboard. AMD 486DX4-120 20MB of ram. Two 8MB 72pin simms. and four 1MB 30 pin simms. VLB Multi IO card VLB Trident 9440 VLB Card ISA Sound Blaster 16 14.4K Modem (8 bit) 500GB Hard Drive Digital ISA Network Card DE205 2X Mitsumi IDE CDROM 3.5 inch floppy. Overall thumbs WAY up.
Gotta give props to my iPad for being able to reproduce that maddening CRT whine, people back in the day got so used to that and fluorescent light buzz that they would argue that they didn’t make noise
Liked and Subscribed, hope you're OK.
Got the same board from eBay today, is really nice but picky with memory indeed
I can't believe I got emotional looking at this stuff. I guess other memories must be tied to those days of building a PC in my first little house and raising kids.
Hey there. I'm impressed as all get out. Doing a video ram soldered upgrade to fix an old card is something most won't even attempt. You're a sharp one you are!
VLB IO cards were always fickle. 32MB RAM is pretty good, but more the better. Use it for disk caching.
Abit boards are my favorite for slot1 or socket 370. no jumpers required, it can all be done in BIOS Important to note you need a pre August 1998 cpu to have an unlocked multiplier
I need to recap my acer aspire m5201 from way back as it's used for cnc control and no way can i rebuild the models i made for the cnc program. Remember, replacing just the visually swollen caps might not be the best idea as ALL the caps will be of the same age ,also you should reform the oxide layer as the caps will have been lying on the shelf for a while and if not reformed the caps may be out of spec for ESR and leakage current. Not going to go well for a mobo if the caps are for critical use areas. Always measure new caps for mobo's,make sure they are within spec. Some manufacturers state to add series 1k resistors and apply full rated voltage , the method i know uses series resistors but apply the voltage incrementally over a period of 3-5 hours, use a bread board and raise the voltage no more than the lowest voltage caps, going in voltage rating stages removing each batch of rated voltage caps until all caps are done,so going from say 1vdc to 6.3vdc in 3-4 hours removing the 6.3 caps and discharging them using a 220k resistor then measure ESR. Watch this video-ua-cam.com/video/L-u8JhVgQlY/v-deo.html - and you may make a tool for this very endeavour .
Seems, your passion is away
Fullyawesomeness!!!
Do you need an Iomega drive to read Iomega disks?
Muy bien explicado!
The Faster was cyrix 586.
hey man i just wanna let you know if i can use your vids in a presentation of mine for my college work hope you dont mind
Thank you!! Just found out I may have to replace caps on my betamax I've never soldered before needless to say replaced a capacitor lol😅
I used to have one of these back in the late 90s / early 2000s! Sadly the clock chip died and my dad sent it to the tip. How did you come by this unit by the way? That's a fantastic find with the matching peripherals and in this condition. Very nice!
Very cool video, I have a rusty old case and was debating if it still has some usefulness, time to restore it!
What an awesome tutorial. Complete with bug workarounds and sensible settings. The setup is so unintuitive it would have been an ordeal to do it without this video. For Win11 though I had to add FileZilla Server to the Windows Firewall Defender, and use Port 21 (unencrypted FTP) on the client for it to work.
Thanks! I have a Dell Dimension 2400 mobo I'm suspecting has faulty caps. It's probably not worth fixing money wise considering how eager people are to get rid of them but I need to get better at soldering and I think it'll make a decent "retro" gaming rig
We miss your videos! Did your retro computing bug died out ? :-)
hey buddy! I just found an internal 250mb ZIP drive in a dumpster and I am watching your video :)
This is a great demo.
This system started me on my journey of building custom gaming systems! One day I decided to play a 3d game on it and was immediately disappointed so I took it all apart and reassembled it from ground up. That’s how I’ve learned things all my life! Fast forward in 2024 and I’m still building systems for friends and family.
You cannot swap caps with lower voltage-rated ones, true. But in this application (most of these caps are parts of step-down voltage regulators or simply filtering voltage ripples) there's no harm in going higher. Manufacturers just aim for the lower value that will (somewhat reliably) do the job. Board real estate is another factor.
You just saved my day, thanks man. Even if I can rewrite some CD-RWs it's too much of a hassle, this makes things much easier for me to install the drivers I need.
Sounds like a real Rager setting up that beast.
Crystal Caves 😍
were expensive
Many years ago, I had a NexGen 586 on a VLB motherboard. Can't remember the speed, perhaps 90 mHZ. Ran great!

You sound like a young person. I admire your knowledge on this subject. Thank you for the info!
Good job💯💯
glad to see the vintage computing community isnt just shriveled 40 year old dudes
This certainly gave me some direction. Thank you!!
Great video!
Hey dude, even you are at a young age today, your explanation was crystal clear and one of the best out on youtube. I hope you excel in this area of interest and you'll become a professional not to mention, you are already 1 in my eyes. :D
very good
So what did you do with the board?
Great Video! I found one of this boards which has the capacitors bulged badly, almost leaking. Hopefully i can recap it, since it's one that supports the Tualatin up to 1.4GHz. Thanks for your explanations!
when i was googling for this i didn't expect a 12 year old kid explain it to me. this guy is gonna grow up into an engineering genious
My Asus motherboard is from 2002...having a number of bulged electrolytic capacitors....but strangely it is still working
