I couldn't disagree more. Colin is being extremely faithful to the source material here, both in terms of musicianship and singing style. The only real difference is obviously in his voice sounding different than Cooke's, and a more folk influenced sound as opposed to soul. Cooke's version is just as subdued and 'lazy' as you say. I feel like the only possible reason one might hold that opinion is simply that a white man is singing a song written by a black man in this particular case.

Dammit, I really wanted to hate on these Sam Cooke covers because quite frankly I could never stand Meloy's neurotic voice (and this from a drum-bashing, flag waving worshiper at the altar of Violent Femmes) and we're talking Sam Cooke here. SAM COOKE! One of the great singers of the 20th century. A man who could make a crowd faint in a giant wave like a faith healer with a single "Woo." A man with SOUL. And let's face it, Meloy has about as much soul as Wonderbread. But these are actually ok, pretty good. They're just folk songs. I wouldn't consider this so much a cover of Cook, however. It's actually very similar to Pete Seeger's rendition of Summertime, which I've always loved. So I guess I owe Meloy an apology. I still have a hard time saying the names Colin Melpy and Sam Cooke in the same sentence, but I really appreciate what these renditions do to immortalize Cooke not just as a singer but as a damn fine songwriter in his own right. To pair a Cooke song like Cupid with an "American Songbook" classic like Gershwin's Summertime really emphasizes this. Thanks, Meloy.

"Meloy has about as much soul as Wonderbread." Oh how I beg to DIFFER, and I say as a singer. I get not digging his voice but mother of CHRIST does that man emote. It's not soul how your typically think of it but it is SOUL no doubt.

      “Gadzooks! Punk’s dead...
      Last good gut wrenched.
Antennae Sam Cook, black book Pushead.
Cat skulls stacked to the black hole sunset.
Olive on a toothpick, Dagwood Bumstead!“
