How to fit Door Frame Linings 🚪 - Розваги
I can't thank you enough for this video. I'm slowly building my own extension (total novice, just keen DIY-er), and today it was time to fit the door linings. Re-watched this video this morning, and now I've got one done which is spot on, and I'm half way though the other. Would never have got it done well without this video and Pete's insight. Thanks again!

I'm a carpenter and the way I do door linings in studwork is, I plumb my timber packings on the hanging side, fix the frame to the hanging side. Plumb the head then two fixings top and bottom on the clashing side, then hang the door, get the gaps right on the clashing side and final fix, then I foam up any gaps behind the frame. Obviously check the wind,before final fixing. Every one has there own method I guess.
Level the head😮😅
Top tip, rather than using a batten across the bottom on one side, cut a piece of 1x4 or something similar the same size as the internal head measurement a place it between the legs on the floor.
That way your opening at the bottom will be dead square, this is a must if you are putting thresholds in between like on fire doors for example 👍
Just wondered if it would be an idea to put some wood glue on the wedges to stop them coming loose in the future if the door was slammed for instance?

Great video mate, the way I like to do it is clamp the 6ft level to the lining with the festool track clamps, brings the lining straight with the level then very quick to get it plumb. I used to have my doubts about wedges, I've seen a lot of old linings where the linings have slipped so used packers for a while, but wedges are a lot quicker and I think this day and edge if you're foaming the gap, they aren't going anywhere.
You are a proper craftsmen, absolutely know what your doing.

Have you ever used tulip wood for door linings I was told it's the best wood to use if your doing wide linings because it doesn't twist later. I put them in my kitchen doorway lovely to work with. Great video.

Amazing video - quick question what if you fitting in old openings and the walls are not plumb. Do you fit the lining to the wall shape?
Exactly how I’d do it. Never understood why people throw the liners in. An extra 10-15 minutes spent getting it right can save you an hour pissing around planing. Great job

Anyone got any insight, one part of the process I don’t understand is how he prescrews an then still manages to push out the frame with a wedge. Does the screw not hold the frame and prevent it being pushed. I have run into the problem of having packers slipping out when trying to pack
Its all about the lining when fitting doors.
I'm a 32 year old self taught chippy.
I've made some big mistakes out of overconfidence.
Took on a weekend job, 13 pre finished oak veneered doors to be hung in very old frames out of whack frames.
Reckoned I could get at least 4x done each Saturday.
Went in cheap coz I was confident I could do a good job. I was wrong.
On a good day I'd get two done, by the time I got to the last few I was insisting on ripping out the old frames and installing new ones, which the customer wasn't okay with.
Ended up costing me about £600 and a month and a half of Saturdays.
I envy the UA-cam tradesmen who have a good enough reputation to charge well and actually enjoy their jobs.

Any tips for working with 20mm solid oak linings? I can't go crazy with screws/nails without having a lot of holes to plug.
I'm purposely leaving this job to the very last so I'm not having to mask-up 14 new doors & frames.
Oak linings 20mm, nightmare to fit being so thin but hide screws with traditional 12mm plug and pellets
I'm planing to replace all my internal softwood doors and linings with oak. Any suggestions on how to hide the screw /nail fittings without using wide door stops?

Good tips there Pete, but what do you guys do on refurbs when the walls aren't plumb and using of the shelf linings. I've come this problem and ended up with the frame sticking out past the wall on one side, causing a right pain when doing the architrave.
Hi kevin we always add on timber scribe on the jamb and kick the door hinges slightly it makes life a lot easier all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE Good idea Tony never done the scribe piece but have played around with the hinges so to get the doors right on the latch side. Keep up the good work lads 👍👍
Pete, whenever I fit door casings at 765mm, I still have to trim the lead edge of the new door a couple of mm as it hits the jamb when I swing it. Is it because I’m using the ballbearing chrome hinges? The casings I used yesterday were factory trenched and I still had the problem of having to back cut the door 2mm. Thanks . Paul

Hi there, very good explanation. What method do you have to make sure the legs are perfectly in line when you can’t stand at an angle to sight down them?
It’s great when you can swing a door and can adjust the slam side to suit, but as you know that’s not always an option. Would you use your laser for example?
String lines across the diagonals any gap where strings meet or one string pushing the other inwards the jambs are not plumb/parallel on the architrave faces.

Hi Paul Pete might use his level straight edge, when we would do price work we plumb hinge side square head hang door and plumb latch side to door, best me a friend did on price in one day was 54 fire doors between us we were earning great coin those were the days 😂 all the best Tony 👍
@@BuildWithAE I like to do the same. I have found I put frame in square and parallel, to find when you swing the door the door is not always true, can have small twist. So if you can plumb the latch side to the door. Not always possible

Im a carpenter and have fitted 100s of frames and linings and i can fit one in 5 minutes and only put 4 pairs of screws down each side and use a level not a laser

How do you go about a leading edge on pre finished doors? Do you leave more clearance or do you plane a leading edge and re-lacquer just the edge?

Hi Joe leading edge I was waiting for that, you should definitely always put a leading edge on all doors and if lacquered then it would need recoating but sometimes this does not always happen because of who doing the doors after they have been hung. I remember putting leading edges on the top of the door as well as the sides if anyone can remember that far back showing my age now 😂 all the best Tony 👍

You got lucky with this, you should have checked your head first, what would you have done if you needed to lift hanging side up? Back all ya screws off and readjust.
