Wow, never thought I'd hear a childcare professional admit they're not really in the business because their passionate about kids but more for the financial aspect. Kinda of scary but I also appreciate the honesty. I always thought unless you LOVE kids you shouldn't go into the childcare business. I've been battling with this. I like kids a lot (I work with them now), and I have kids and would like the opportunity to stay home with them more but because I don't have burning desire to work with other people's kids this has kept me stagnant on opening my own daycare.
Did you end up opening a daycare? I struggled with this as well. I have a master's degree in education, but I always taught high schoolers because I prefer older students. I have four children I stay home with and homeschool, so I've been considering opening a daycare. In our county, there are only three daycares and they have long waiting lists. It is definitely a need and pretty recession proof.

I have been wrecking my brain on this subject due to I have read non profit daycares are able to recieve funding such as such as start up loans and grant's more so than for profit. It is the blue print your business follows. You plan the growth and development, income and expenses, and daily operations on paper. If it works on paper, there's a higher chance of it working in reality. Also, the plan helps you set and achieve targets and prepare for anticipated obstacles. It's like travelling with a map to increase the chances of arriving successfully, rather than leaving it to chance, not knowing the stops along the way or how much it will cost.
As far as I know there is no early childhood business major unfortunately. However, you do not need any degree to start a day care or any business for that matter. It is advised to be knowledgeable of your field and be an expert or working on becoming an expert. I got my bachelors in childhood education (grades 1-6). I'm about to receive my masters in early childhood and special education (birth - 2nd grade). I did not take any courses in business or marketing. I gained my experience as I learned from my mistakes and success.

I actually got really lucky with my set up for my first day care location. I was searching for an appropriate house that could be approved for a day care according to my state standards. I searched for months and finally came across my house. It used to be used as a day care by the previous tenant so my landlord luckily was already familiar with the concept. So there wasn't much convincing in that aspect. I just had to sell myself as an appropriate, trustworthy tenant being that I was so young. Everything just worked out honestly. Most landlords are afraid of the liability and the house being damaged, I understand that.

You do not need a degree to start your daycare but you do need certain certifications such as CPR/First Aid, Orientation training, etc. Depends on your state though
