Crazy. I was just about requesting a breakdown of the string section as well, because it sounded so Clare Fischer to me (Prince's favourite string arranger) - now i read your comment learning it actually is a Fischer arrangement (by Clare's son).
This is so cool, I did an arrangement of this tune for a show, the more I dove into it the more I'd discover about D'angelos almost flexible use of harmony and form. I could have used this information for sure, it's challenging picking the chords out by ear, great job
Nice to see you still rocking D'Angelo. Congratulations on your newborn! Would be nice to see you dissect Erykah Badu - Other Side Of The Game, another great track by soulful R&B neo soul legends.
Great videos, my high school students had a great time jamming with Just the Two of Us in class prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. Love this tune, so slick!
I love your channel. Im a soul singer/ sax player that writes with keys. Your ideas been giving my tunes flavor. I also love your harmonic minor and Brecker licks. I use them at jazz jams.
damn, have been looping your old breakdown analysis vids, wondering where you've been, but congrats for the second kid Jeff!!! by the way, that new circle of fifths chart with those arrows are amazing!!
It's always a pleasure watching your vidz. Really helps improving harmonical understanding which (sometimes) isn't so easy for us bass players:) By the way, your back light looks like a full moon:) Keep on doing that good stuff! And enjoy the time with your second child!
Congratulations and welcome back. I've been listening to this song every day this year and now you're analyzing it. Did you spend time away spying on subscribers? If yes, thanks for doing my song first lol
This is my favorite song ever. That being said...you're off the mark in the harmonic rhythm breakdown. The Em7 chord comes in as a two count pick up, not on the downbeat. The element of swing is really important in digesting the song as a whole. Also, will there be a breakdown of the bridge/B section back into the A section?
Jeff I love the video editing as well as tutorial content. Do you mind disclosing what program you used to edit so that the photos and text slide into frame. Thanks
Congrats on your second ONE! Good luck. Hey I love this this type of videos, they are pretty simple and helpful and full of good hints. Variations on 6-2-5-1 will never be out of fashion, this composition shows the author has imagination. Thanks
I am not sure to understand B7 doesn't belong to E minor (because E flat which is the third of B7 doesn't belong to the key of E minor). From my perspective it should be Bm7 (Phrygian). Someone can explain maybe?
The way that V chords work is that if you're going from V->I they're allowed to be dom7 no matter what. This is because of how well Vdom7 resolves to a I , even if the I is minor. So when he talks about using the B7 being a secondary dominant, basically he's referring to the phenomenon that if you're going somewhere (going to the Em), the V7 of THAT CHORD will always sound good before it. So the composer's thought process here is "I'm going to Em, and a chord that always works before Em is Em's V chord" which in this case is the B7. I'm using absolutist words like "always". While it's not technically correct, it's best that you think of it that way for now until you get better enough to know when that's not the case.
If it resolves to E I wouldnt interpret it as a secondary dominant, but borrowing the 5 chord from the parallel harmonic minor. It's a really common thing especially in classical music. Ancient and common
It's like modal interchange. Exchanging phrygian for phrygian dominant aka V7 in harmonic minor. Borrowing the natural 7 as the major 3rd of the 5 chord resolves stronger than a minor 7 because it is temporarily visiting a scale with more tension.
Question. I would like to make a transcription channel for piano scores. Do I have to contact the owners of the audio performances before I sync audio with sheet music? Thanks a ton!
Ah, the good old 6-2-5-1 progression. 😍
Would love to see more D'Angelo breakdowns, absolutely fascinated by his writing, and I love your explanations!

Hi Jeff! I wonder If you could breakdown chord progression from Chopin prelude in e minor?
Hi! How do you split your screen and add the cam for your piano? Big thanks!

Question. I would like to make a transcription channel for piano scores. Do I have to contact the owners of the audio performances before I sync audio with sheet music? Thanks a ton!
When people start talking music language I just take that time to think about something else meanwhile
