    The stock IS20 in the '15 GTI Autobahn I bought 7 months ago as a one-owner 53K mile car is apparently at deaths door at 54K. Car came running Unitronic Stage 2 which was installed (w catted DP) at around 40K. First of all, pretty (VERY) shocked that it would go at such low mileage. Secondly, naturally since it needs replacing anyway am thinking of going IS38 or something like Vortex (heard bad things re: EQT...Garrett PowerMax?) but one thing I'm not doing is putting another POS OEM IS20...what a joke. I'll check your tuning vid but it seems like MK7 people either hate or love Unitronic. I loved driving their Stage 2 in mostly city traffic and their customer service is great....maybe it's a case of I don't know what I'm missing with other tunes...?? TY cheers dude!

      I’d recommend a OEM is38 from FCP (lifetime warranty FTW) if you’re happy with the power it makes now, although with any upgraded turbo should be paired with a upgraded intercooler (if you don’t have one already).
      2015 cars had early revision turbo and other engine parts, so a fresh current revision is38 should last 100,000+ miles worry free with proper maintenance.

      From what I understand it’s more expensive than EQT, so given their awesome track record I wouldn’t venture off into other similar offerings like HPA.
      As far as bigger & badder options with a larger budget PAG Parts has a Garret GTX based “TRX” turbo which should shatter all records once it’s out in the wild. Granted is38 vs EQT vortex is a far cry from that breed of turbo so it’ll be its own video once it’s fully released

    I been wanting to know if there's a big difference from OEM IS38 VS EQT Vortex. But I'm still a bit confused. This is the break down I got so far.
    OEM IS38 360WHP reliably. More power will decrease lifespan, even with fuel support mods. EQT Vortex is $799 more then OEM. And need supporting Fuel Mods to see the increase Power which drives Cost up.
    But than you mention needing a $500 Custom Tune from EQT for vortex cause they don't carry a Base Map for it. Or is that with the XL only or Both? I'm looking to upgrade the turbo of my car next month. And I'm looking at both OEM IS38 Turbo and Vortex XL. Tune by APR or COBB AP with EQT. I'm a Daily Driver and plan to do Autocross on the weekends. I would like 400hp with a reliable Turbo, hence why I'm leaning towards Vortex. I don't want to do any Fuel Mods except for HPFP and keep everything Pump gas. Now if the Vortex can't produce 400hp without more fueling mods or E85 best bet is to stay OEM IS38 I guess. What's the best Bang for Buck if I want 400hp reliably on pump gas and HPFP upgrade?

    • @SmkinBarrel
      @SmkinBarrel 3 роки тому +1

      My advice would be to not chase this “400” hp number. If you want a reliable turbo with a good amount of power and still have head room for more just in case you decide that you would like more power then vortex is the way. You can probably hit your “400” hp goal with HPFP but you wouldn’t be getting your money’s worth as the turbo is capable of much more. Just get a Vortex/Vortex XL IMO.

      Forget the vortex XL, it’s WAY Too Much turbo for what you’re looking to do. The standard EQT Vortex is what you’d want. NOBODY has a OTS vortex tune (for either version) and EQT doesn’t have one for is38.
      Based on everything you’ve told me go APR/FCP IS38 and you’ll love it. If the 400hp thing is a bucket list item just lie like Subaru owners and claim 400hp haha (it’s true for crank hp, but not a chance for WHP)

      93 octane is standard here as well (aside from some west coast states). I build two different size FMIC for these cars, and my V1 FMIC would suit your needs (although shipping would probably be prohibitively expensive).
      I run a OEM is38 on my personal car, and haven’t had any issues with it (including track days & daily driving). In the US a company called FCP Euro offers a lifetime warranty, which is better than buying a upgraded unit (because at the end of the day, a turbo is a wear item that’ll eventually wear out).

      As far as I know EQT hasn’t released a OTS is38 tune yet, so check with Ed but I believe you will need a pro tune

      Get a 5150 tune

    Is20 hybrids are 100% worth it, spools up much faster that an is38 and they can run more horses than an OEM is38. Is38 is kinda boring.

      Not saving anything at all in the long run.
      My is38 car is plenty of fun on a OTS is38 93 tune, traps 115mph, gets 30+ mpg & even with 121,750 miles on it still hop in and road trip anywhere.
      I’ve also got 10k in mods, there’s a good rule of thumb to remember. FAST, CHEAP, RELIABLE (pick two).

      Im at 82k but other then MPG we are tit for tat.. But with me running IE id rather buy a GT2260S if my is20 blows.. not much gains to be had on a IS38 specially when they don't usually do good in the 400HP range.

      I’d skip both and consider a Vortex or Vortex XL with e85 available, the Stage 1 Powermax will be maxed out in the low 400s regardless of fueling.
      The issue with pushing a turbo beyond its compressor map isn’t the risk of hurting the turbo, it’s everything else it can take with it (intercooler, cat, or worst case the engine).

    • @Carguylogan
      @Carguylogan Рік тому +1

      What happens when you are in my area with no E85 within 4 hours and forced to use 91 and get clapped by my 91 octane is38 car? Using a larger turbo is always an advantage. Is20 E85 is similar to is38 93 octane. But on E85 the is38 is faster. Why compare totally different fuels?

      Maybe I was having a off day, can’t say I remember since it was over a year ago. Regardless with over 6k views I can’t just delete it because my monotone-ness was worse that particular day.
      I’m not a actor, or a tv personality. Just a mechanic & fabricator who made a UA-cam Channel & shoots everything in one take on a iPhone. There’s plenty of UA-camrs who know absolutely nothing, but make it fun to watch which is great for entertainment (not so great for making informed decisions, learning to diy, or cross shopping products like my FMICs & line of exhausts.
      I really appreciate the feedback, but there’s nothing I can do about a year old video (you mentioned yourself I’ve had more fun with the newer stuff). It really comes down to shooting solo vs having someone to interact with (which makes it easier).
