Holy crap you did The Hip! These guys are Canadian Royalty. When the lead singer Gord Downie died it was a national day of mourning up here! Their last concert (he had terminal brain cancer so they knew it was the end) was televised and was basically must watch TV. Please do more!! Greatest Canadian band ever! Thank you!!
Agreed! Also The Guess Who and The Band are great Canadian bands.
I was there in Kingston (where I am now) (birthplace of Bryan Adams). They played the concert live behind Kingston city hall (cause the concert was sold out). I was 6 rows from the stage. It was incredible. 27000 people on the streets. They aired the entire Kingston concert on CBC during the Olympics. They cut the Olympics short just to show the concert. Thanks for reacting to this. Made me smile.
@@kellysmith2241 I’m from Halifax. That night was my good friends Wedding (obviously planned before the tour was announced) and we legitimately played that concert during the reception. I also recorded it and I’ve watched it many times but I can’t imagine being there live. What a special experience.
@@kellysmith2241 They (The Hip) would also normally play a concert for the guys/girls at RMC (Royal Military College) in Kingston as well. Great Band and Canadians.
It was a great show! R.I.P Gordie ❤🍻
Gord Downie probably one of the greatest Canadians to ever live. He was helping with indigenous residential school survivors while battling brain cancer before he passed =O
Adding Burton Cummings to the list . Hoping they do The Guess Who soon!
I'm not even the hugest Hip fan... but they're always cool, empathetic and engaged. And when they hit, they hit hard...
@Earl Lemal TB and Smallpox killed those kids...
Guy toured knowing days numbered to say goodbye like just the best
Gord downie will always be a Canadian legend but I think terry fox
Takes the cake on greatest Canadian to ever live
Canadian legends! RIP Gordie baby.
DO MORE HIP DO MORE HIP
The Tragically Hip are criminally underrated with a very unique sound. The lead singer Gord Downie is practically Canadian royalty and as others have noted very sadly passed away but handled himself with great composure and Grace throughout the entire process.
They have a lot of great songs you two should check out
Ahead by a Century
Grace, Too
At the hundredth meridian
Wheat Kings
Etc
"Bobcaygeon" is a beautiful Tragically Hip song. And a beautiful place from what I've heard. I thank the local Chicago radio station for introducing me to them about 20 some years ago.
Speaking as someone who lives in Bobcaygeon, it is indeed a beautiful place.
@@mookie7688 Totally agree mookie! My daughter works there and I'm a Kawartha neighbour.
Bobcaygeon is my favourite Hip song
You must visit it, north of Toronto, cottage country.
@@shonaboufford7342 mine too
Fun Fact: Gord Downie wrote most of the Hips songs but shared publishing royalties equally among the band. He explained it was hard to have a cohesive band when one guy drove a Porsche and the rest had to ride 10 speeds.
To be clear, he wrote the lyrics. Music was much more collaborative.
@@johnm.2633 I saw a documentary and everyone involved attributed the writing to Gord. From what I know about the Hip I have no doubt it was run as a Democracy and if someone had a better idea then thats what they did.
To be accurate
Gord Sinclair The bass player wrote most of the songs for first two albums including this masterpiece.
It was after this album that Downie took on roll of lyrics and the band was collaborative
Thank you for finally giving The Hip a listen. Like everyone else here has said, the impact this band had on Canadians was indescribable…Gord Downie was Canadas Poet Laureate and a lyrical genius. I hope this opens up a whole new world for your subscribers ☺️
Neil Peart has entered the chat
Not just Canadians, I grew up in NY on the Canadian border. These guys were royalty to us too
A big thank you to Lex's mom for wanting to listen to this song. It didn't get much love in the polls, likely due to the fact that they aren't well known outside of Canada. But in Canada, they are huge. Thirty three years together, 13 studio albums of which 9 of them reached number 1 on the Canadian charts, and 16 Juno awards. They were essentially Canada's house band.
To give an example of just how big they were in Canada...
In May of 2016, lead singer Gord Downie revealed he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, and that there would be one final tour of Canada that summer. Tickets sold out for all the shows within minutes of going on sale. Their final concert took place in Kingston Ontario on August 20, 2016... and was broadcast live and uninterrupted by CBC on tv, radio, and the internet. Roughly 11.7 million Canadians tuned in, representing about 33% of the population. By the end of that show, there likely wasn't a dry eye among those 11.7 million Canadians.
Sadly, Gord passed away on October 17, 2017.
If you want to check out more of their songs (which we Canadians would love for you to do), may i suggest..
Cordelia
Locked in the trunk of a car
Little Bones
Twist my arm
Trickle down
Wheat Kings
Hell, i could list out 30 or 40 songs, so i'll leave it at that.
There's a great documentary about that final concert. I think it's called "The Tragically Hip - A National Celebration". I'm not Canadian but I'm a big fan of The Tragically Hip.
@@timmarkley9309 it's called "a long time running" which is also a song by them
Well known in every border town...Buffalo!
AND in Border towns, especially along the Great Lakes. For those of us Americans who lived minutes from the border or on the southern shores of the Lakes it was just as hard to lose Gord. I'm from Ohio, so with songs like Chagrin Falls (which is near Cleveland) and other more American topics like Gus, he spoke to us, too. And I thank Gord every day that Canada shared him with us.
It's weird too cause I think they toured a lot in the US as well, but like only border-states might have heard of them because of Canadian radio lol
Welcome to Canada!! Soundtrack to a generation. Made me weep a little. Happy tears.
U got it. Dig it
The Tragically Hip is huge in Canada but didn't quite take off in the US I have no idea why they're a hell of a band
Probably didn’t help a large amount of their songs were about Canadian culture. Like a song like 50 Mission Cap, Wheat Kings or Fireworks aren’t going to play as well to Americans. But they definitely deserved to be bigger in the states.
I agree, and they never lost that bar sound. Love them so much
@@chrisi1466 I thought because they probably didn't participate in (payola) so radio stations didn't play them in the U.S EH
@@chrisi1466 You hit right on the head but they were cool with just being Canada's band something we didn't have to share for once and just keep as our truly Canadian band. Yes I would have loved for them to go world wide but in the end they were ours just ours to keep.
Much of it has nothing to do with the actual music, but more how much money the record label put into the marketing and the fact it was a Canadian record label...etc.
We can thank Lex’s mom for this. It lost the vote but she said she wanted to listen anyway.
This was mama's pick during the stream, I have no idea where she got the idea for the song, but as a Canadian I was pumped when they actually listened to it. They're in the Top 3 Canadian bands as far as I'm concerned and have a ton of great songs. Check out Fiddler's Green, Hundredth Meridian, and Grace Too.
Long Time Running, Scared, Wheat Kings. A few more just in case you need them. But don't worry they have lots of great songs.
Ontario here!
Agreed. Also with so g suggestions. Start with hundredth meridian though!
I would watch every single reaction lol. Love seeing people discover the hip
Top 3? They're Number 1. Rush is great, but they ain't The Hip
Yes!! The Hip! 🇨🇦🇨🇦 Along with Rush and the Guess Who one of Canada's most beloved bands!
Loved Lex's stank face! Courage,
Twist my Arm, Grace Too, 100th Meridian, Cordelia are a few to check out. Gord Downie the lead singer and lyrist passed from brain cancer a few years back. They did one last tour just before then and it was televised across Canada. Mama's got good taste!
Cheers
Another fan of the stank face!
YES, the Tragically Hip are a Great Canadian import and can really crank it up when they want, they freaked us out when they opened for Page & Plant in the mid 90s. Please do Grace Too, both studio and live, it is one of their most Killer Tracks! Enjoy. 🎸
Always amazes me how HUGE the hip are in Canada and no American has heard of them. They got a big catalogue of great songs 👍
I live near the Windsor border on the US side. LOVE the Tragically Hip for years now
I live 5 min. South of the Canadian border, I've seen tragically hip, Matthew Good band, Gob, and a handful of other Canadian bands, so many good concerts in years past, good times.
I am an American who has enjoyed their tunes for 25+ years and will for the rest of my life. Then again, I was an avid UFO fan these past 50 years or so when most of the general public has no clue how good a band they were. These bands belong in the R & R Hall of Fame and are better than many bands already there...
They were huge in Buffalo!
It's more Southern states who haven't heard of the hip. Northern boarder states you'll find more fans. Couple reasons for this.
1. When the hip really started to take off was in the early 90s and that's when grunge was exploding and
2. They wrote and sang about Canada which was hard for Americans to relate to
WHAAAT!?!? ONLY MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE PLANET!! THANK YOU!!
The Hip! You came to the mountain! The boys are THE BIGGEST band EVER in Canada. Absolutely revered. Miss ya Gordie, baby!
While Seattle’s grunge scene was at its height, Canada was putting out equally amazing stuff that didn’t get much play outside of the country. Check out The Tea Party, Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth etc. The Tea Party is one of the most underrated bands ever.
I lived close enough to the Canadian border in Washington to get several BC rock stations so I was always up on what Canada was putting out including the ones you mention.
Could not agree more about The Tea Party. So good.
Matthew Good Band too.
Danny to your list I'd add the band Moist and also the solo stuff by its singer David Usher. I saw The Tea Party open for Rod Stewart before any of us in the audience had ever heard of The Tea Party. They outperformed Rod. I remember thinking Jim Morrison of the Doors must have been reincarnated!
@@rossmacintosh5652 For sure! I actually saw Moist in concert and David Usher dived into the mosh pit, told us to hold him up, and while standing on a moving mosh pit, sang, “Silver” better than the album version. So talented.
More of them please!
I’m an Aussie who was introduced to the hip when I was friends with a couple of guys from Alberta. Saw them in London in 1990 and 1992…awesome band. Love Little Bones and Titanic Terrarium always gets its hooks into me. Great stuff guys, would to see Lex react to Locked in the trunk of a car…
As a Canuck who's a big fan of Midnight Oil and the Tragically Hip, I kind of always saw parallels between the two. Gord championed the rights of our First Nations, much like Peter did. Both bands have a remarkable way of musically evoking their national landscapes and experiences (including the troubling ones).
Lock in the Trunk of a Car... watched cold and without context... oh dear... It might seem a touch disturbing (well, it is supposed to be, but you know what I mean).
Cheers from Halifax mate :)
Buffalo NY here right on the border. I love me some Canada!! RIP Gord !! You are a legend... Please do more Hip !!
The Canadians are all whispering "killerwhaletank" during the instrumental. Thrilled you guys have found The Hip. Check out Wheat Kings and Boots and Hearts, my personal favourites :)
LOVE this song!
yes, we need more hip
Greetings from north of the border! Thanks for playing a Canadian national treasure. We don't always understand all the lyrics (Gord Downie was a published poet as well as a songwriter) but we loved the songs. "Ahead By A Century" is my personal favourite - check it out!
Wow Tragically Hip! Very impressed 👍🏼
I have loved this song for many years. Another of there's I like is , The Hundredth Meridian .
These guys are like royalty in Canada. Fully Completely is a great LP from them & "Courage" an excellent track.
GenX and Boomers love them in Canada! Not so much the younger generation.
@@alexandermacneil4430 I'm 21 and I like the hip
@@alexandermacneil4430 millennials know them from their parents, well ontario millennials at least
nautical disaster by the hip is some of the best lyrics you will ever come across
The first time I saw The Hip live, they opened for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in TO in '92. What an amazing night!!
the hip AND rush!! wow! that would truly be a perfect night.
Wow - it's very rare to have ANY Hip reactions on here. Thanks for giving them a listen. Definitely Canadian royalty. Blow at High Dough is another great one.
Wow did not expect a classic Hip song. Nice. This song came out in 89. Some songs to check out Its a good life if you don’t weaken, Wheat Kings, Grace, Too… such a deep catalogue
Thank you for doing the Hip! As someone with a brain tumour I was in total awe of the way Gord Downie was able to tour across the country and give Canada one last farewell concert. He handled himself with courage and grace too.
I can’t think of anything the Tragically Hip would love more than seeing all three of you bounce on the couch to their music. Couch mama in particular is making Gord Downie smile, wherever he is.
🇨🇦🇨🇦YES!!! They are a national treasure!!🇨🇦🇨🇦Thank you!!!
Such an underrated baseline!
I visited New Orleans from Canada and stopped in at Pat O'Brien's. In the Piano bar I requested this song and the woman on on piano immediately said "Ladies and Gentlemen can we get a round of applause for our good friends here from Canada!"
Thanks fer checking out the Hip
The Hip! That's the good stuff!
Surprised seeing someone reacting to the Tragically Hip. I've been listening to music since the late 60's but i had never heard of them. About 10 years ago my son who has a huge cd n album collection picked up 4 of their cd's at a thrift store and when i listened to them i easily found enough songs on them to make my own personal best of mini-disc of them. ( liked this cut as well )
Must have been listening to them while they were still in school
wow!! I never thought you'd guys have "The Hip" on the channel. They are Canada's band.
Sadly the lead singer (Gord Downie) passed away a few years back due to brain cancer but the Hip got to do a Canada-wide tour before he passed.
I'd love it if you checked out 50 Mission Cap, Courage, Ahead By A Century, At the Hundredth Meridian and Poets.
So happy you check them out though, great reaction!
I’m not Canadian, but I’m from New York, and the Hip is huge here!! They are the Pride of Canada!
We love our Hip here up north!
I've been asking you to do The Tragically hip for a long time I'm glad you finally did it, they are a Canadian gem 🇨🇦
Thanks for doing the Hip! You made your Canadian fans super happy, they have a lot of great tunes. Canadians are super proud of this band, we love sharing them since they seemed to only be huge at home. They did a final concert on CBC before the lead singer passed away, very powerful, he knew it would be his last performance.
As a Canadian makes me happy to see everyone enjoying! RIP Gord Downie
Wheat Kings is my favourite. Other great ones are Bobcaygeon, Courage, Darkest One, Fully Completely, 38 Years Old, Last Recluse, Love is a curse, Grace Too and Fiddlers Green
20 years for nothing is nothing new. no one wants to hear about what you didn't do.
RIP Gord Downie. Canada thanks you Brad & Lex
Love seeing the Hip reactions!!!
Great Canadian band, thanks for the reaction
Oooo, B&L, you just tapped into a band that will blow your mind if you follow through.
I had the pleasure of seeing this band @ least ten times, thru the years being up here in VT.
They did an outdoor gig in a field up here. These guys sat down and had a beer with us at our tent and just chilled. I miss Gord.
Awesome awesome group......tons of great tunes. Among the greatest Canadian bands ever.
Actually saw them live in New Orleans
I can tell RIGHT AWAY Lex is going to DIG the The Tragically Hip. She gets it. Not everyone does.
THE HIP! More Hip Please!!
I love The Hip.....still have my long sleeve Hip T from the 90's.......when I listen to them I always feel special to be ' in on the secret '
Some others I don't see mentioned here so far: Locked in the Trunk of a Car, and, It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken
As a Canadian, I have to say "thanks so much" for showcasing these guys. This is my favorite song of theirs. I used to play drums and sing lead on this song in the garage band I was a part of a few years ago.
Greatest Canadian band of all time.
I saw them live twice. First time I saw them live, Gord Downie walked across the seats and fell into me and my best friends arms. He said "thanks boys" and we helped him up and he kept singing. One of the coolest moments of my life.
Long live the Hip
This is one rabbit hole that you should go down!
Oshawa ,Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 Rocks with you !!!!
Wow. The Hip. Thanks.
Thanks so much for listening to this song! Just rockin to the tune up here in Canada!
So glad you found The Hip, as we know them. Sadly they never got the airplay in the US they deserved. Poets was my favourite of theirs.🇨🇦🤠
One of my favourite bands. I met and interviewed the boys while working as a journalist back in Toronto. They were Canadian music royalty. RIP Gord
Canadians are TIGHT . Guys a freakin poet
Awesome! I'm Canadian and love that you guys are checking this out! Tragically hip rule. Also, thanks for the music video...kinda...the effort is there!
R.I.P Gordon Downie!!! The Hip… Canada 🇨🇦 is well represented… 🍻 cheers
RIP Gord! I true legend!!!
This made my day. Thank you! 🇨🇦 RIP Gord, you were a one-of-a-kind.
The Hip represent a huge part of my youth. Many parties and many concerts! RIP Gord. In Gord We Trust.
Amazing...a band that means so so much to Canadians. Thank you for the video!
Another little-known but great Canadian band is The Tea Party. This is the advantage of living in Western New York, we get acquainted with a good deal of Canadian music.
Gord was one of the best performers I've ever seen. He was an entertainer filled with passion to th3 very end.
Greatest Canadian band ever! They are like royalty in the great white north. Thanks for checking them out. :)
You guys discovered a gem of a band. One of the greatest of all time. Don’t know where to start on all the great songs.
OMG, The Hip!!! Yay shout out from Canada. Saw these guys in concert a number of times. I am from their hometown Kingston. Gordie rocked out until the day he died. His final concert was the most touching thing ever. You need to do more.. so many good songs. LITTLE BONES, 38 years old ( never kissed a girl), 100th meridian, Fiddler's Green. ( These are all old ones to start with)
Thanks to Couch Momma for this! We Canadians love The Hip as much as we love hockey! Try Blow At High Dough next if you want to hear more from this band! They have many great rockin' songs as well as awesome ballads...
LOVED IT! Never heard this before and it was awesome to have listened to it for the first time with yall, and MOM! Shout out to whoever it was that suggested this. I had seen it mentioned in the Live stream chats many times, and thought about checking it out myself, glad I waited. Being from SE Louisiana it certainly picked up the vibe of this area perfectly. I would still love to see yall react to Die Antwoord= I Fink U Freeky, and watching the vid. Its been a while since it has fit into the genre of one of the live streams, so havent suggested it in long time. Something totally different than anything you have heard before, but epic. Love you guys
Wow Momma gets it, yes! A lot of their success was due to their appreciation live music in bars around Kingston until they were discovered. Thanks for doing this! Proud to say I am from the Limestone city as well. Rest in Peace Gord, a lot of us miss you.
Nice job y'all, Wheat Kings, Fiddler's Green, 38 years Old, Bobcaygeon are all very good
Thank you soooooooo much for highlighting the Hip. They are legendary Canadian rockers, poets, and humanitarians. Do all their songs pleeeeeeeeease!
They are legends here in Canada 🇨🇦 RIP Gord Downie. I'm tearing up right now.
Great Canadian band, loved listening to them growing up on the Canadian prairies. Takes me back to my younger days.
I can't believe I missed this one. I subscribe to your channel, and I thought I got notifications, but better late than never. There's a line in the song that says, "I got my hands in the river, my feet back up on the bank, I look up to the Lord above and say, 'Hey, man, Thanks.'"
Live, that line is changed by the Audience to say, "I look up to the GORD above." Since October of 2017 that has been truer than ever.
As an American I fell in love with the Hip in 1989 or 1990. Earlier than some Canadians. And it was because I lived in Ohio across Lake Erie from Ontario. Listening to Canadian Radio was the best thing that could have happened, because I got to have nearly 30 years of listening to Gord put out music.
Thanks, Couch gang, for listening to The Hip.
this song was actually banned from canadian airwaves during Katrina, just to respect those affected during that time, but it still remains a kick ass tune for us canadians and the world.
Loved seeing mama get right into this, really grooving by the end. ❤
There was a part in the second verse where all three of you were bopping your heads at the same sync and it was so cute. I’m glad my Canadian superstars can make y’all’s head bop at the same time.
my home town boys. The kept the lakeview manor jumping when they were the house band there.
OMG You did the Hip! Thank you thank you thank you! WE LOVE THEM SO MUCH. "Bowie mixed with the Doors." Damn that's good Lex. Gord Downie, the lead singer was an absolute icon. They were Canada's band. The Hip did one last tour across the country when Gord had brain cancer. They finished in their hometown of Kingston and there wasn't a dry eye in the country that day. Incredible show. So emotional. Never seen anything like it. Last great gathering of Canadians too.
I just subscribed, both because you guys seem like awesome people just enjoying new music, and also because now I’m hoping for more Tragically Hip reactions 😁 I will click into those so fast lol
These guys were from my hometown of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. They were the hottest concert ticket in Canada for over 2 decades.
I knew the lead singer's parents for ages and worked at the bank where the guitarist Rob Baker and his girlfriend banked. Very down to Earth and always got the inside scoop on any upcoming albums. Their song, *_"Fiddler's Green"_* was playing on one of my mix tapes at the restaurant I worked at, when Gord's parents asked me what radio station it was...
Long story short, they introduced themselves to me and told me the song was about their grandchild who passed away - very touching song - you should check that one out.
Yes, The Hip are awesome. Try The Luxury, Blow at High Dough, Scared…
Darn I missed this live!// I never thought this would happen
Loved her genuine reaction!
Seeing the Hip on Canada Day few years is the ultimate Canadian band to see - they’re the most Canadian band ever and listen to everything haha
Yes, you found the Hip! 🤙🇨🇦
Blessed to have seen & heard these magicians perform over 15 times since 2000.
Love this song. Great video you three. 🙂
FINALLY!!! i thought you'd never get to The Hip. this hole is a deep one. impossible to suggest specific songs, because the list is absolutely endless. but check out '38 years old' and 'nautical disaster', brad should love those. also 'blow at high dough', etc, etc, etc, etc, etc......................
