This is really beautiful to watch. Thank you for your analysis and break down with the match. I have commitment issues to my pieces and it is tremendous pressure to sacrifice them. I never feel confident with an exchange
Mato, at 11:37 white could checkmate in two immediately, but he gives another check with the knight just to torture the black king. Sadistic! I love your videos!
Mato, I'm glad you made a video for Karpov. We can learn alot of positional ideas from Karpov just as we learn chess from tactical players like Tal & Fischer. In my opinion, Karpov is one of the most underrated chess players in history. This checkmate is called Philidor's checkmate, first described by Lucena's 15th century!
Mato, I'm very glad you made video of Karpov. Thank you. Suggestion: You should make video of Karpov's immortal against Topalov. I think its very good game.
Great video, and great comment/ instruction as always, Mato. However it seems the audio on this video was too low. I'm not criticizing, my friend, just letting you know there might be a minor misadjustment in the volume. Thanks for all your work, and your teachings. I respect you, admire you and will follow you no matter what. Best wishes. Elmer.
Rook to a1 King to h2 Checkmate on Queen to e6 looming now, black has to move queen while defending checkmate so black must play b8, other option is check on c7 and then after pawn to g3, queen to d8 If queen to d8, then knight to g6 check, king to h7, knight to e5 check from bishop and if king moves back to h8 then knight to f7 forking king and queen. If pawn blocks then queen to f7 check and king can only move to h8, then knight takes pawn on g6 checkmate. If queen plays to b8 instead of d8, then knight to g6 check, king to h7, knight to e7 check from bishop and after king to h8, knight to c8 and queen cannot take the knight or he will lose his queen, if he ignores this move and plays another move, for example, rook back to a8, after queen to e8 check and, it is checkmate. If he plays pawn to g6 then queen to f6 check, if king to h7, queen takes g7 pawn check and after king to h8, checkmate on h7. If king goes to g8, then simply knight to e7 checkmate. At least that is the continuation I worked out - 3years old comment but this might help any new watchers
Karpov is a genius. It is no exaggeration to assert that Bobby Fischer would have no chances of defending world championship against such a player for more than one championship cycle

Couldn't Shirov have moved his Rook to a1 to get check with Karpov's King and then check again with Qc7 thus avoiding the attack from the bishop on his queen?

this guy made me feel like he was telling a story about some kinda real life war. really fantastic video, sir. Cheers
"Knight and bishop are dancing on the light squares.Having party" God, that made my day! xD
Good to see them enjoying themselves!
I am using new mic.
It was on low to avoid background noise.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention
Mato you are the best. I love the killer moves and I like how you can make us laugh with your "Just kidding" moments
Lesson learned: always capture the piece that is about to mate you.
I really enjoy Karpovs matches.

Fischer was not a tactical player, he was a positional beast !!!

What a wonderful smothered mate!
Stunning checkmate pattern! Loved it!
I can't wait to turn my laptop on, knowing Mato uploaded another great video. Thanks Mato!
I didnt see the smother mate. THAT WAS AWESOME!

I don't hate anyone.
Thanks for making videos Mato!
Luv dat game blessings king man nufff razpek
Gret Video as always Mato.
Thanks mato, you're the best
At 11:04 black could have played Ra1+, save his Queen and continue to fight.. Did i miss something?
Still black would lose with Bishop, Knight and Queen's attack combinations on King side :)
Rook to a1
King to h2
Checkmate on Queen to e6 looming now, black has to move queen while defending checkmate so black must play b8, other option is check on c7 and then after pawn to g3, queen to d8
If queen to d8, then knight to g6 check, king to h7, knight to e5 check from bishop and if king moves back to h8 then knight to f7 forking king and queen. If pawn blocks then queen to f7 check and king can only move to h8, then knight takes pawn on g6 checkmate.

At least that is the continuation I worked out - 3years old comment but this might help any new watchers
Play it again
fantastic mate
Knights are lethal around a king in a tight spot, like a hand grenade.
@11:01 why not black play R1+ followed by Qc7+ would that not save the game ?
even if white plays Qxf6+ black can play Qg7 .
Am i missing something ?
Mato you made a mistake, 11:38 instead of Qg8+ directly and Nf7 mate you repeated the Nh6 part
It would be nice to have more: ''What plan would you do in this position?".
Thank you for the video.
What is the motive of black by wanting to exchange rooks at 09:36? It seems like a fatal, illogical move.
Black would like to get rid of that dangerous rook on the 7th rank, perhaps
amazing chess game as well as mato's analysis
This game is the example of mastery of strategy.
Karpov is a genius. It is no exaggeration to assert that Bobby Fischer would have no chances of defending world championship against such a player for more than one championship cycle
Mato you are great
On 7:04, wasn't it better, instead of capturing the pawn back, to play Be4?
Yea, didn't see that continuation. Thanks!
Awesome game. Small advantage > small advantage .> small advantage > BLAM!
why not ra1 check at 11:08
Rook to a1

Continuation that I found
I love the way the video becomes dramatic so suddenly.-"Here...white made a move......and...black resigned". DEN DEN DEN!!!!!!
At 12:03 can play white Qf5 ? And then Qh7 for mate.
P.S. I love your videos ! :)
at 11:38 the best move is Qg8. After rook takes Queen, the Knight can deliver checkmate on f7
11:37 mate in two moves; Qg8 Rxg8, Nf7 #
mind boggling..
Couldn't Shirov have moved his Rook to a1 to get check with Karpov's King and then check again with Qc7 thus avoiding the attack from the bishop on his queen?
11:38 Even there he could have check mated in 2. why taking pawn? pain for shirov?
Mato you are a very strong player, are you a GM? Please answer me!!
I am MJ. Mato Jelic
MatoJelic Michael Jordan of chess! Haha
+Pedro Chess It sais online that he's technical considered an expert
"Grand mother" 🤔
I think he's around 2100 or higher but not quite a GM. He would still embarrass me in any game of chess. He has very good tactics.
MATO dearest;
Everybody loves you.
11:00 - 11:10 the rock can go to a1 with check, which enables the queen to save the situation.
Rook to a1

Continuation I found
I found Queen to F5, but Mat's mate was going to be quicker then one or two moves
*Mato
Wow Karpov
Gr8
"Hell of a party!"
very unusual way for Karpov to play !?
Not smothered mate, suffocation.
Shirov had Knightmares!!!! lol 😆
best on town
Your voice is too low
Please check
Aethiest !
