I can't watch the other chess channels. They spend too much time talking. Mato says only what is necessary to explain the position and has a soothing voice.
That was utterly glorious. Mato has showcased some brilliant mating sequences for us, but this just might be my personal favorite. The inevitable and willing execution of the queen to a pawn.
Hey Mato, of all your games this has to be the funniest. I have laughed so hard that all my stomach muscles are hurting. You have a great sense of humor.
Mato, thanks for posting this game. What an excellent illustration of zugzwang....White's only remaining move loses his queen, and mate is imminent! Love it!
VERY interesting game. Thank you Mato. I always hit the "like" button for you. Really appreciate how you don't just post games but you post games with a theme and a purpose and pick excellent examples in your lessons. I've seen many games and also games with zugzwang involved but not as interesting as this one!
I remember a construct that sooo impressed me when I was studying chess 40 years or so ago.. at the time of the first Spassky Fisher match..... where there were loads of frozen pawns and for every move by white king to break in there was (generally) only one square for the black king to move to to maintain the draw. it so enchanted me that I mapped out the squares of possible movements. Of course I have lost that particular chess puzzle and can not find it... oh well...lament of an old man....(smile)
mato thank you for all videos. i love too much your analysis, presentation nd especially your accent :) 'we have reached the critical position of the game' and 'white/black resigned' are my favourite sentences because of you and your accent :) thank you again mato!
This is by far my top favorite Mato video. There were other way more tactically interesting videos, but this one for some reason I enjoyed the most and have watched it many many times.
Thank you Mato. I'm just beginning to learn chess thoroughly and I was having trouble understanding the concept of Zugzwang, but this video was an excellent demonstration of it.
I once had my opponent trapped in zugzwang. I just moved my pawn down the a file and my opponent resigned. While not favored by me, this style of play is something I can definitely respect.
7:43 Rook on f1 can move, but only along the same rank to keep pinning knight to king. Knight on g7 can move to any legal square, even to e6 (if Ne6 dxe6 then K can capture the newly queened e-pawn). King can move to any legal square, including g8 (the move actually played in the game).
I find it interesting to think how close some zugzwangs can be to stalemates. If one looks at the position at 8:13, which as Mato pointed out is a possible position had White not resigned when he chose to do so, try to imagine a white rook sitting on h3. If that were the case, with White to move, this would be stalemate. On the subject of zugswangs, although I like this one, Aron Nimzowitsch has an absolutely breathtaking zugswang in a game against Saemisch in 1923.
end1dream I think that's because of his East European heritage. I've noticed that others from the region (like Susan Polgar) also pronounce it correctly. It's only the Americans (and to a lesser extent the English) players who normally have a problem.
There is another game I saw similar to this but more subtle, a recent one decade back or so, between two grandmasters, where the king just simply walked up through the chessboard on a leisurely stroll to deliver mate and the other side could simply do nothing about it. I hope you find and cover that one, Sir MATO
It would make no difference. The game would be one turn longer and you always(if you dont want to torture your oponent) want to win as fast as possible.
+Sander You either didn't pay attention, don't know how chess pieces move, or are pretty much blind. All white has to do is move his knight from h3 to g1 to stop the check. People on UA-cam are the best at making silly, and funny, comments.
Most sadistic way to beat someone I've ever seen.
I was about to comment that. Looks like I was a year late.
Mato is a great coach and commentator.
I learnt a lot from this man .
Mato . I must thank you from my bottom of my heart.
mato is the best... no commercials before video
+lautaro Cuttica your right, I never realized that. Mato is the best.
+Nate Diaz Ripped Conor A New One lol 😂😂

+Pizza Shark It's my favorite too. Keep coming back to it. Never seen a king trap itself in the corner by his own men that brutally before.
+Pizza Shark The King's long walk is my favourite.. have u watched it
Hey Mato, of all your games this has to be the funniest. I have laughed so hard that all my stomach muscles are hurting. You have a great sense of humor.
'Black resigned in shock and awe!' is also one of my favourites :) keep up the good work Mato.
Very fantastic Game ! Thru this game only ,I learned the meaning of Zugwang ! Your commentary is also live as we could see your smile in the voice !
Mato, thanks for posting this game. What an excellent illustration of zugzwang....White's only remaining move loses his queen, and mate is imminent! Love it!
Another great video Mato. You have a great technique with the way you explain everything. Thank you very much for your excellent videos.
Thank you for your comment

Oh this is really fantastic.. I so love the way you present "these beautiful games"! Thank you so much.
i came here to see "killa move"
Awesome! I've never seen anything like that. Mato finds the coolest games.
At least the king had his queen in his tomb at his dying moments :'(

you have been studying chess for more than 40 years? geez. Care to answer how old are you and what is your rating sir? :)
68
And how old are you?
Very fan of your videos! Thank you! I like the gamification factor u apply when u tell us "pause the video and find the killer move for white"^^
Amazing game with amazing soft tongued analytical commentry clarifying the True Zugzwang..
mato thank you for all videos. i love too much your analysis, presentation nd especially your accent :) 'we have reached the critical position of the game' and 'white/black resigned' are my favourite sentences because of you and your accent :) thank you again mato!
Man..... This is the most amazing Zugzwang I have ever seen
This is by far my top favorite Mato video. There were other way more tactically interesting videos, but this one for some reason I enjoyed the most and have watched it many many times.
I am pretty sure that watching your videos has improved my chess game. Thank you.
'Killing me (him) softly' would be a good song title to describe this chess game IMO
Mato, I love when your voice gets super intense out of no where.
really a wonderful game and very nice narration! thank you Mato
I always like Zugzwang situations. Thank you for the video!
Out of all the chess games I've ever seen this is my favorite one
Thank you Mato. I'm just beginning to learn chess thoroughly and I was having trouble understanding the concept of Zugzwang, but this video was an excellent demonstration of it.
Great game! Great lecture; You are an artist!

Yes I can see Koala from where I am siting. I have a picture of them on the wall.
i experienced this kind of position and it hurts you can’t do anything
This is the most epic Zugzwang I have ever seen :O.
fantastic zugzwang!! your work is wonderful Mato..
beautiful clear explanations.......... fantastic. thank you.
Thank you
It was like watching someone paint themselves into a corner. Tangled up in knots!!
I sleep at night and sometimes during the day
White ............................ played a move........................ and black....... resigned.......
omar 23 it's actually black played a move and white resigned
@Omar: We’ve heard that expression a thousand times 😊👍
I've never seen an "ominous" chess game before.... this was too cool!
You learned to speak German in two months!? You're a cleverer man than I.
Great job!! as ussual Mato!!!
we missed you last week
thank you for this great instructional game.
Excellent example Senor Mato!! Gracias
Thanks to Jato M. - really like your style of analyzing - and also your selection of games and variation - msk
One of the best games you posted :D
always a pleasure. thanks for the upload
What a beautiful, slow, sadistic checkmate
7:43 Rook on f1 can move, but only along the same rank to keep pinning knight to king. Knight on g7 can move to any legal square, even to e6 (if Ne6 dxe6 then K can capture the newly queened e-pawn). King can move to any legal square, including g8 (the move actually played in the game).
Amazing game Mato, i think u should make little more details cus this is a marvellous game but u make it so simple :D .
Positional gameplay at its best, this video actually made me laugh more than it should
That is becouse I was on a Holiday in Germany (Göttingen) for two months and learned to speak German.
nice game - I use this tactic quite often in endgames - its absolutely demoralising for the opponent
Actually Mato is a awesome chess teacher :D
Very Nice Mato! You should start making videos again on the current tournaments happening.
My subscribers know that I am making them

That was an amazing game, a very peculiar situation.
One of the few non-German players who actually pronounce zugzwang correctly.
Mato, I must say... "What a presentation"!
Fantastic game,thanks Mato!
FANTASTIC TOMB GAME!
i am looking for a 4 - f attack with the sicillian defense , can i get some help please ??
It looked like most of my positions.
good game I enjoyed it thank you.

love it! evil laugh inserted here .. mwaaaahhhaahhhaa
nice .. 👍👍👍

I hope you find and cover that one, Sir MATO
Brian Cho you probably are referring to Nigel short's king walk
Great game!
Unbelievable! 🔱
HI THIS IS MATO
+mychannel we have reached a critical position :D
+octaviane andracles If you wish, you can stop the video and try to find the killer move :D
+toxico tamper It is black to move ... what would you play in this position?
White played a move and black.... RESIGNED
Is it too soon? Let's see how it plays out.
so what series of moves correspond to zugzwang ? didn't understand it
Bravo! 👏
The word is variation or narration?
mato, you are amazing
I hope never to get in a Zugzvang, in chess, life or love...claustrophobia my man !!!!
you're awesome Mato!
Yeah, I heard "sugswang" so often now in youtube videos :D
Wow. Great game. Thanks!
Nice match :)!
Seems so easy when you explain it.
this game is legendary
at 5:48 doesn't Rf1+ win?
wjat an awesome gammee :) !!,
Excuse me Mato, wouldn´t rook to F2 on 5:59 be a good move?
@6:32 34. ...g4 -- a beautiful move that sealed white's fate
i wonder why
there are 3 unlikes for this video. It is a literally tomb.
burhan bozkurt they came for lara croft's tits
maybe agad fans
Thanks for the vid!
Doesn't A.Karpov strategize in similar fashion !?
Why didn't black, instead of moving the king at the end, capture the pawn on a5?
It would make no difference. The game would be one turn longer and you always(if you dont want to torture your oponent) want to win as fast as possible.
Jonáš Chromý Oh wait, you're right. I forgot that
I wonder if GMs plan these endings at certain points in games like ten moves away? A good chess player is an artist.
where is the "killer move"
the ending is ingenious
I'm agree, thanks Mato.
aww. i feel so depressed after that. getting that far in a game and getting crushed so dominately
At the end when you asked what would you do, i took pawn on A5 :(
cant't black force mate at 5:48? by checking with rook.
+Sander You either didn't pay attention, don't know how chess pieces move, or are pretty much blind. All white has to do is move his knight from h3 to g1 to stop the check.
People on UA-cam are the best at making silly, and funny, comments.
+TheLastMoonsmith Not seeing the knight is very easily done for a beginner chess player
Wonderfull game
