Kurt Cobain's Steps in Aberdeen

  • Follow the footsteps of Kurt Cobain before the days of Nirvana. I filmed this piece in close order to the Walking Tour provided by the Aberdeen Museum of History. As a fan of music history and Cobain, I understand the importance of capturing these sights on film and making them available to fans around the world who may never make it to the Pacific Northwest. Please excuse any ads that pop up. These are not mine, but UA-cam's for my using copyright music. The song is "Oh Me" recorded by Nirvana though as many fans will note, the song is not written by Cobain, but great nevertheless.
Here's the timeline for the five-minute documentary:
    :00 - :30 Entering Aberdeen
    :30 - :55 Kurt's childhood home
    :55 - 1:28 Rosevear's music store
    1:28 - 2:15 Dave Crover's (Melvins) House
    2:15 - 2:38 Site of Kurt's 1st arrest (vandalism)
    2:38 - 2:56 Lamont Shellinger residence
    2:56- 3:19 Site of Kurt's 2nd arrest (trespassing)
    3:19 - 3:44 Krist Novoselic's mom's hair shop
3:44 - end Young Street Bridge
To learn the history behind these places, go to: www.aberdeen-museum.org/kurt.htm.

Down the alley from Kurt's childhood home lies a brown house. That's where my Father lived. Dad would feed their dog, Cricket. He was a nice dog. After Kurt passed, I told my Dad that I wanted to walk over and give my condolences to his family. I'll never forget what my Dad asked me after I told him. "Would you be going over there for them, or for you?" I thought about that for hours, and never ended up going. Kurt's music was there for us. If his family does ever read this, I hope they know how much his music meant to us.

I can understand your fathers point.I was fairly young when the guy died myself 17 or 18.Easy to be a little starstruck.I think it would have played out the same if it were me and my dad. I live and went to school in Elma and down in Raymond before that.My uncle drank wine and showed some chords to Kurt I guess and I was in pacific county jail with his childhood buddy the one in the documentary they interviewed his dad where Kurt stayed on their couch when one of the times he left home.I wasn't really a fan of the music more rock and metal not punk or alternative but it all brought some notoriety to the area. Its not a flashy place around here.People are real around here. Kurt I think would tell people to stay home its just a real place like any other don't waste your time. That's how he was didn't go in for fame & pop culture shit.I met a kid like a year after came from Japan to see his grave.Couldn't believe it.Especially since apparently he was cremated and there's no grave.Shit what a waste coming from Japan stupid ya ask me.

I lived in Thunder Bay for a while, and there was a street named for Paul Shaffer (David Letterman's piano guy) 😂
It made me laugh at the time that the crappy town would have named that little street for him as some desperate attempt to say, "See? Not everyone that comes out of this town is a total loser"

Great job on this! Went to Aberdeen and did this exact tour this summer. I have wanted to go for past 20 years and finally was able to make it happen. It was surreal being there and seeing all of these places. Your video brought it all back. Thanks so much for posting it.

I saw on the end of that one sign..."our beloved hero". There's an interviewer talking to Kurt & he said, " people come up to you like you're a fucking God. " Not sure how well Kurt would take that word "hero". He just wanted to be normal & play music.

Aberdeen is an old, run-down logging town. It was much more "bustling" when Kurt was growing up there.
The houses you are showing have all been remodeled and would have looked much different when he lived in them.
