In this video, we'll be talking about Aegirocassis, a larger relative of Anomalocaris from the Ordovician period, and the earliest giant filter-feeder known. We'll also discuss some of its unique features, and what they tell us about the relationship between Radiodonts and Arthropods.

Genuinely thought this mans hair was being blown by a fan above him but no it was just an eight legged big boy
GOOD GOD
"Sir, there's a little something on your head..."🤣
Put that thing back in its box!
i cannot unsee this
You had me hooked the first time I saw that spider on your head, with no explanation, or context.
Arachnophobes are going to have to change their pants.
@@CraftyZanTub
arachnophobe here. i instantly paused the video and going to block this channel.
Hate to break it to arachnophobes, but this channel is very unlikely to appeal to you, with or without the spider in this particular video.
@@omnius1357 didn't have to announce your useless opinion. no one cares that you're scared of spiders. didn't have to announce you hated this channel so much you had to block it.
@@Velkhana_The_Myth
First of all, this is a comment section, so I commented.
Secondly, you need to read before steppin in a rage! I did not say, nor imply "hate" for this creator, channel, or the hat you are wearing.
Thirdly, your judgement of my oppionions, fellings and fears about spiders is really hateful, misunderstanding, and intolerant. Moral genius..
Bye
Thank you for the great series! I'm an old guy now, and the mysteries of the early origins of complex life were open to much speculation. Now with your generation, so many of the pieces have been put in place, integrated and analyzed, I'm grateful to be a witness to this.
I would like to agree except we've only seen probably less than1% of the total number of species that were present during a given period of evolution. For every weird wonderful thing we've uncovered there is something vastly weirder we will never know existed.
Man they’ve found so much in the last two decades it’s crazy
I’m still in my twenties, yet the progress that’s been made since I first took interest in prehistory has been incredible.
What sticks out to me the most is how prehistoric animals no longer feel like semi-mythical dragon-like creatures; reconstructions look like real, flesh and blood animals.
Spider is in a good mood today.
She’s always chill
@@BugsandBiology if she is always chill, you've been always chill around her :3
As a nerd and musician, I love how many band names and song titles there are in the names. "Please welcome Anomalocaris with their special guests, The Gilled Lobopodians and Engorged Priapulida!"
Your pristinely-executed deadpan delivery of the "need to get a fucking life" punchline just got you a sub
Deadpan humour does seem to be a bit of a specialty of mine. Not that I'm capable of any other form of delivery...
Anytime you post something talking about radiodonts i feel like that "god i fucking love this bread" feeding the pidgeons meme. Can never get enough of anything having to do with these funky little prehistoric guys
Radiodonts are honestly such underrated animals. Definitely deserving of a lot more attention in media.
@@BugsandBiology most animals before the Triassic period are underrated
I love this kind of video where you learn about something completly different from anything else, gives me so many ideas and possibility for speculative evolution of what could be
Thanks!
Speculative evolution seems like a fun thing to indulge in.
The huntsman crawling on your head did it for me. Great video.
took me an embarrassing amount of time to notice the huge spider chillin in ur hair. what a nice little guy
Once again, you've outdone yourself. So glad to see your videos getting some views-you deserve it. It is quite clear that you put a ton of work and care into each one. You're brilliant! Can't wait to see more.
Thanks!
Very happy to see a recent burst of activity on my channel, especially for palaeontology content, which was originally a poor performer.
Aegirocassis is absolutely fascinating as one of the first giant filter feeders. It’s just so interesting seeing the modern baleen whale niche being filled by an arthropod. Thanks for the video, and helping me familiarize myself with a period in earth’s history I’m not terribly familiar with!
Thanks!
Of all the animals to fill that niche throughout history, Aegirocassis was definitely the oddest.
I have no idea who you are, but your love for spiders is enough for me to subscribe.
Sorry I’m a bit late to this one!! You’ve started my obsession with radiodonts, before watching this and your other two videos I had no idea what they are, and now I wanna learn as much as I can!! Thank you for this!! I’m loving the new paleo related content, and I’m hoping your new found audience are also gonna enjoy your bug content as well. And I hope the adorable little huntsmen becomes a recurring character lmao
Much appreciated!
I’ve gone down something of a Radiodont rabbit hole myself lately. But I reckon that I’ll give the early Paleozoic a break for my next couple paleo-vids. Arthropleura won the poll (predictably), so that’ll be the topic.
As for the spiders (this is actually a different individual to the one in my last video), I intended for their guest appearances to be a one-off thing, but now I feel like sticking to it just to spite the whiners.
I love this series. Informative, engaging and so funny.
You’ve earned yourself a humble sub. Enjoy your presence and presentation. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the sub!
Glad you enjoyed the vid
fantastic video mate, keep it up
I'm so so glad I found your channel. Keep it up! ^^
I appreciate that you give the etymology of many of the binomials that you’re discussing.
Hiya Jackson your varied interests amaze me how do you find the time enjoyable and educational video keep it up mate
Absolutely superb presentation! A model of clarity, succinct mess and information-rich. I've become a subscriber!
I’m glad you found it “clear”. I always worry I go too heavy with the jargon in my videos.
@@BugsandBiology I might be slightly biased.... I'm a biologist :)
Give our host a couple of beers and he'll be the life of the party.🤣
Well, a few drinks at my workplace’s Christmas party had me wildly dancing on a stage, so you’re probably right!
I've never seen our channel before, but i love your voice and cadence to bits.
This is attenborough-level good
Wow, that’s one hell of a compliment. Thanks so much!
What a great presentation. Definitely watching more

How can you see into my eyes like open doors?
Leading you down into my core
Where I've become so numb
Without a soul
My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold
Until you find it there and lead it back home
Wake me up inside (save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up)
Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up)
Before I come undone (save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
Now that I know what I'm without
You can't just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring (bring) me (me) to life
Wake me up inside (save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up)
Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up)
Before I come undone (save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
Bring me to life
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside
Bring me to life
Frozen (frozen) inside without your touch
Without your love, darling
Only (only) you are the life among the dead
All of this time, I can't believe I couldn't see
Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me
I've been sleeping a thousand years, it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything
Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don't let me die here
(There must be something more) bring me to life
Wake me up inside (save me)
Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up)
Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up)
Before I come undone (save me)
Save me from the nothing I've become
Bring me to life
I've been living a lie
There's nothing inside
Bring me to life
Absolutely loved this video, glad you gave this giant recognition! You could perhaps make a video on Shinderhannes next!
Arthropleura will be my next feature, as determined by a recent poll. But I’ll definitely discuss that species sometime.
Radiodonts are some of the coolest organisns ever, especially because they were the first megafauna
Just found your channel and I love it!!
Thanks!
Amazingly clever presentation. I wish you were every high school students science teacher
Much appreciated!
I’m no educational expert, but I do think the way science is taught in schools leaves a lot to be desired.
Radiodont madness wooo! love the reconstruction and can see how you've improved from the Omnidens video
Well, yeah. I actually remembered how to say organism this time.
@@BugsandBiology lmao
Love the video and your cadence! My only recommendation would be to include backround music that's a bit more befitting of oceanic atmosphere. Fun vid, you got my sub for sure!
Great video! I’ve been trying to do a few documentaries on my channel as well. Your videos are always extremely informative!
Thanks!
Looks like the "Vortex Snake" enemies from Ecco The Dolphin: Tides of Time.
Great content, and *I love your pet!*
Very well explained, thanks
You have a f#*@ing life, my friend and binomial classification is my favorite language to listen to.
Amazing videos on the Cambrian bro
Isn't Aegirocassis in the Ordovician period?
@@Orthosaur7532 yes this is correct but the order is from the Cambrian. When you look at Aegirocassis it looks Cambrian a lot. But I digress
Great narrating mate!
More please. Most excellent 👌
Very educational!!
loving the vidos on the cambrian, hope you'll cover the evolution of arthropods through the paleozoic. would also love a brief into to our guest star each episode.
the definition of staya in that intro👌
3:09 bro been on the hub again.
I found the feet interesting. I saw the image you shared but I'd also enjoy a video on the step by step evolution of arthropod feet.
Have you considered making a video about Timorebestia koprii? Before radiodonts, cephalopods and vertebrates took over, these animals where the dominant predators in the water column in the prehistoric oceans.
This video made me hungry. I'm going to need to head to a Greek restaurant afterwards.
I salute you for the great choice of music.
It’s…odd. But it does the job, I think. Glad you like it!
Thank you algorithm gods! Truly enjoyed.
Glad you enjoyed!
Feel I should be thankful to the algorithm gods myself, given the activity I’ve seen on my channel lately.
Subnautica Below Zero definitely saw this
You should consider doing a video on the last radiodont Schinderhannes bartelsi
The first thing that went through my mind seeing this is the Ice Worm from Below Zero
Normal People: Freaking out over the presence of a spider.
Me: Immense concern that the spider could get hurt when allowed such free reign.
Hi Bugs and Biology love your videos especially about the funnel webs!! Just wondering if you plan on ever doing a video on things to be cautious about when having pet funnel webs, like common illnesses or fatal problems as I never see any info on that in arachnid owning groups! Just tarantulas 🥺
I likely will make care guide videos in future.
As for funnel-webs, they aren't all that different from tarantulas. But they are much more vulnerable to desiccation.
I cannot believe we missed a whole bug update we were patched far too late to experience all the other previous content.
You sir, have a great sense of humour 😂
Haha, thanks. Definitely not for everyone though!
I immediately fell in love with your lovely cohost! (Yes, you could say that I have a thing for invertebrates)
Anyways, if I'm not mistaken, the oxygen content at the time was much different from today, and I do remember reading that if you were to breathe in the air from hundreds of millions of years ago, you would get dizzy, and possibly pass out. It seems that the oxygen content wasn't as high, while the carbon dioxide level was higher. No surprise, since there were no modern trees as of yet. But giant 'shrooms! Yay!!!
Conversely, I'm not sure how the modern climate would affect specimens of the Aegirocassus if they were somehow transported into modern times.
Unfortunately, it appears that we were never meant to share the same environment, as amazing as that would be.
Anyone speaking casually as giant spider crawls over their head is to be trusted
AWESOME
I wonder what it looked like when they swam with those double fins? I'd love to see an animation of it.
This dudes a legend. How does having a tarantula his face not faze him? I understand not being scared of spiders, but it's got to be, at the very least, annoying and uncomfortable. Yet this dude makes entire videos with them just chilling on his cheek. I respect that
Huntsmen are extremely light and soft. Honestly you barely feel them unless they’re moving fast.
So what was found in the fossil record before the Cambrian and would you do a video on it?
Very possible. I've only recently started branching into paleo content, minus a couple vids from over a year ago.
It’s nice to find you again. I wanted to show someone your funnel web spider videos. I searched through my subscription list but couldn’t find you. So, I searched for “funnel web spider feeding.” Your channel icon or name wasn’t showing up but this icon and name kept repeating. That gave me the bright idea to search for “centipede feeding!” That’s when I saw a video that showed I already watched it. I found you! Took some detective skills. Now I know this is you. I’m still❤ subscribed. You give me all the cool geeky buggy taxonomy knowledge I could ever want. Keep putting out those educational videos. I personally like the videos you make about the creatures in Australia. Would you consider making videos on the wild parrot populations? Connect it with evolution to make it fit the education vibe you have going. Australia is interesting. Oh! It would be really awesome if you could visit Steve Irwin’s zoo. That man is a legend. He told the world we should cherish all animals. You help the general public appreciate various “bugs.” Ok, I’ll shut up now and end this before it becomes two novels. I only meant to say it’s nice to discover this you now. Have a good day.
Thank you, Bruce Lee!
very interesting.
3:28 what do the colours mean? Like do they say what the animal ate? If so, what did they eat?
I like to imagine that you haven't noticed the animal on your head
That spider crawling on your head really creeps me out...
This man, with a poisonous beast crawling around his head, spouting knowledge of ancient monsters says he needs to get a life.
The spider’s basically harmless. Safer than a dog.
Interesting glimpses into the early days of life. I like it. The fossils of some of those earlier creatures looks awfully similar to the giant whale fossils in BoTW.
THERES A BLOODY SPIDER ON YOUR HEAD MATE!!!
SERIOUSLY ITS HUGE.
STOP IT😢
There's a... There's a spider... On your head! A big spider!!! 🤨
Bugs eating bugs… or rather, bug-eating bugs eating bugs eating bugs… but that would be bug-eating bugs eating bug-eating bugs eating bugs…
3:33
Looks like a Pikmin monster.
I've always asked myself if there was some amphibian whale (from the Amphibia class).
Since tadpoles are filter feeders already, it is reasonable to imagine some Amphibia which kept that trait even as an adult.
huh, if I were to blur my vision, I see some inspiration for subnautica.
Am I right in thinking radiodon are also the forerunners of species like ammonites and belamnites?
and what sort of spider is your little friend he/she is amazing
What species is that there hair stylist you've got working on your braids??
Some kind of huntsman spider (Sparassidae).
Beregama aurea (golden huntsman)
so if someone is a bug enjoyer, does that make them a bugger?
@3:05 happens to the best of us
Que bonito...
What did it filter feed upon?
Plankton
Bro are you Peacocking with an arachnid? Because it's working so hard..
Ice-Worms in Subnautica arent real, they cant hurt you...
Coooool 😎
I really like this video. Now, is it just me or does this guy sound like Boris Karloff.
Dude! you've got a spider on your head!
I love the information, but dude is unhinged for talking with that big ass spider crawling around his face
that shit look like the ice worm from subnautica
3:05 ... but the Ordovician was also a biological explosion he-he-he
These videos are peak B&B, keep it up my man! 🕷
Onychophoran affinities?
Distantly. Closer to arthropods than Onychophorans.
I wonder what predator made them develop the heavy armor that a-pods had
not sure using a cat for scale works because i got a 10 pound cat and a 30 pound cat. also nice spider.
i am going to keep this giant creature as a domesticated pet
Triramous lifeforms when?
I won’t mention it, everyone else seems to have mentioned it, I won’t be drawn in…..damn it…huntsman, head, hair…there I said it.
**Hmm nice, a video on Ordovician life, hmm his fans on way to hard lol**
**Gets further into the video, suddenly develops a life long arachnophobia**
First Ratatouille, now this?
There's uh... Something on your head there...
The bug has taken this man under its neurocontrol and is now spreading bug propaganda.
What's your spider's name? It doesn't like the bright lights.
