Call Me goes so hard, so sultry and filthy. Like walking into a dive bar at midnight
Real
Plaintive, deeply driven.
Call me feels like something that would be playing as a psycho killer like Anton Chigurh stalks his victim.
That's what I thought too, it's so effortlessly gritty and sludgy
RIGHT? it sounds like something Max Payne would listen to while on a 3 week painkiller bender in Philly.
Simon's newer music is fine, but I do miss this sound, it's too bad we'll never get to see where they could have gone from here. RIP Alvin.

Bro why is this unironically so fucking good? Like I keep coming back.
I understand, my day is no longer complete without an unhealthy dose of sludge.
it's so fascinating. the first time i listened, i was under the impression that this was some sort of twisted cover band or maybe even heavily manipulated originals. on the second listen, ive been blessed with the context of a lot of these songs and related albums being not just covers, but Alvin and the Fucking Chipmunks covers slowed down. it's been incredible really. idk how i can have something so perfectly mesh with my sense of nostalgia and contemporary tastes... bro... it reminds me of slowing down and speeding up my favorite tracks as a kid, via cassettes, CDs and then digital. this is the best of that concept...
I'd bet anything they knew exactly what they were doing,.
doom metal is addicting lol

@@nathanfoley I have a pitch shifter plugin for youtube when im testing tracks for djing - about 30% is actually really good sounding but its way less haunting and scary
This might be getting a bit into conspiracy territory but I don’t buy Alvin’s death being a suicide. There’s a lot of things that the papers either downplayed or didn’t mention; signs of struggle in the room, the fact that Simon’s alibi was later proven false, the unexplained marks on his arms, his messy divorce, Dave’s disappearance for several months immediately after (not even attending the funeral), and the fact that Theodore looked more scared than sad in the interviews and never took off his sunglasses, it all points to something darker happening.
Everyone likes to say Simon killed Alvin - and he did! Just not with the gun. There were so many times where Simon could’ve just said no, and really stood up to Alvin when he was at his low points, but Simon was an enabler. And everybody likes to forget that he was doing some heavy shit too, but just because the rest of the band was doing it more, Simon kind of gets forgotten about. But Simon was always there with a needle when Alvin burst into the studio jonesing for his fix
So yeah, without Simon there egging him on, maybe Alvin would’ve gotten help if he had somebody to tell him “no”. Dave cared about the money, he wasn’t gonna step in. But Simon had his chance and he threw it away. THAT’S how he killed Alvin
Alvin was shown to be an abusive and manipulative person, even IF Simon killed Alvin there are many interpersonal factors that we don’t know about there relationship. But I’m willing to bet that Alvin was very abusive. Either way it’s a sad situation as a whole.
Was Simon a monster? Absolutely. Was he murderer? I'm not sold on that. The obvious fear Theodore had that was visible in the interviews can easily be explained by two things: Theodore hadn't completed his court-ordered rehab, and his proximity to Simon, the person who got him addicted to heroin in the first place. Theodore had every motivation to get clean, but if you watch his body language when he's around Simon.... it's weird, like he's surrendering and just trying to get through the encounter so he can get back to the world that makes sense to him.
@@mikefortier3518 I don't think for a second that Alvin felt that he had any other way out than the one he tragically took. The drugs were secondary to the fact that Simon was caught on tape in 1996, saying that Alvin and Brittany's second child was actually fathered by him. *that's* how he kept Alvin in line.
i went to Alvin’s funeral. i was probably only 8 or 9 at the time, it was my dad’s weekend to have custody of me. he apologized to me and said he didn’t want to go, but he had to. he told me he was specifically requested in Alvin’s will, even though it was at least 13 years old, “back when the problems had just began, but before they all caught up to him.”
when i got there, i understood why my dad didn’t want to go. everyone there seemed mad at him. no one came to talk us. my dad was furious that Dave didn’t even show up, said it was the least he could have done. i overheard people kept asking each other where Simon was. there was someone tall that watched from afar, from under a tree on a hill, but they left before the casket was lowered.
i’ll never forget seeing the Chippettes cover “You Were Always on My Mind.” i was scared of Britney because she looked dead herself, but i knew from her voice she was still alive, still feeling, still hurting. she never finished the song. Jeanette said “show’s over, folks” and flicked her cigarette butt at the coffin.
everyone seemed in a hurry to leave when it was over. i think they had already done all their mourning well before this day. but my dad, he told me to wait by the car because there was one last thing he needed to tell Alvin, in private.
i wasn’t alone for long. Theodore came up and knelt down to talk to me, told me it was very good of me to come with my dad that day and be so patient with all the adults. i asked him why everyone was mad at my dad.
he nodded and thought for a moment before he explained “some people think today would have never happened if Alvin never met your daddy, but your daddy isn’t to blame. Alvin did this to himself. being a grown-up means making decisions for yourself, like knowing when to stop and knowing when to get help. Alvin may have been old enough to do this, but he wasn’t strong enough. you see, Alvin was in a lot of pain. all the time. and your daddy, well, he helped Alvin not always feel that way all the time. like when the doctor gives you medicine so you feel better.”
though i know better now, i was confused at the time. “But Dad isn’t a doctor,” I told him.
Theodore sighed and smiled weakly. “I know, sweetheart. I know.”
When my dad returned, he looked worried to see Theodore talking to me. He looked at me, then asked “What did you say?”
Theodore just replied “That this wasn’t your fault” and hugged him before walking away.
we sat in the car for what seemed like an hour afterwards while my dad cried. he kept saying “i’m sorry, i’m sorry” but i never figured out if it was to me.
we never spoke of this day again, but listening to this album now, i can still see Britney’s eyes and hear her voice when “You Were Always On My Mind” plays.

I really weirdly met Alvin as a kid. My parents and I went to this convenience store in our neighborhood, I went to go get a Lipton which was right by the beer, and ALVIN WAS THERE. I was all excited and stuttering but I managed to say "You're Alvin!" and he was so kind, which was surprising, bc ppl always talk about how bad of a mood he was in at meet and greets. He was super attentive and nice to me, Alvin even bought a disposable camera for us and had the clerk take our picture. He and I are doing the "rock on" sign with both hands and my star struck parents are just standing there awkwardly lol. I'm so lucky I have it tho! I think Alvin was nice bc I was a kid too, so thank God for that. RIP Alvin, we miss you ❤

legend has it swans’ entire catalog is inspired by this album
This whole album gives me an incredibly vivid feeling of stepping out the back exit of a downtown brick and mortar into a slush covered back alley. It’s the weekend after thanksgiving. The alley is peppered with cracks from decades of temperature extremes. An amalgamation of grime stained blackened ice and slush line the sides of every building and the rest of the street is sprinkled with oil stained puddles. Yellow humming street lights suspended by wire bounce off the reflections in the puddles. The harsh yellowish white light contrasted by a starless night sky in the inner city. You chugged a bottle of otc cough syrup a few hours previous and time has long lost its meaning in the moment you are in. You are overcome with a paradoxical feeling of sinister benevolence. You have developed a new core memory. No amount of explaining will adequately describe why this moment is significant to you, and this experience will never be replicated again.
It's like a sort of hopeful grime, yeah.
Like, there's a power and reserved enthusiasm in the lyrics, but the slowed-down instrumentals have this oppressively depressing vibe that is unshakable.
it's like the singer is fighting back against what's all around him, all while he keeps getting dragged down deeper and deeper...
By the sludge
Way too specific, dawg

1980s:
- The 1980s mark the peak of the Chipmunks' fame as they dominate the airwaves with their music, star in successful TV shows, and become a merchandising powerhouse.
- They embark on extensive tours, performing sold-out shows worldwide and amassing a dedicated fanbase of all ages.
1984:
- Signs of trouble emerge as Alvin's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, showing up late to performances and exhibiting manic energy on stage, causing concern among fans and industry insiders alike.
Late 1980s to Early 1990s:
- Despite continued success, internal conflicts and personal issues begin to take their toll on the group's dynamics.

1994-1996:
- Alvin's descent into drug abuse becomes more apparent, with rumors swirling about his addiction and its impact on the group.
- Simon, while initially resisting, becomes complicit in Alvin's drug use, leading to strained relationships with Theodore and David.
- Theodore, influenced by the toxic environment, struggles with his own addiction, further exacerbating the group's problems.
- Concerts are marred by incidents of violence and reckless behavior, reflecting the chaos consuming the band behind the scenes.
- Alvin's personal life spirals out of control with a messy divorce and rumors of paternity scandals, adding to the turmoil.
Alvin's Death:
- Alvin's untimely death occurs under mysterious circumstances, sparking speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding suicide, foul play, or a fatal overdose.
- The aftermath of his death leaves the remaining members of the Chipmunks and their associates grappling with conflicting emotions, unresolved issues, and a shattered sense of stability.
Aftermath:
- The Chipmunks' career suffers a significant blow following Alvin's death, with attempts to continue without him met with criticism and skepticism from both fans and industry insiders.
- Simon and Theodore, grappling with their own demons and the loss of their brother, struggle to navigate life without Alvin, facing battles with addiction and personal trauma.

Do you have some recommendations that fit into this genre?
In 1980 Three 18 year old boys formed the band “Chipmunkson16speed” they where a regular post punk band until 1981 when there was a radio glitch that made a song play on 16 speed. The boys, satisfied with this type of sound started recording an album with this sound. Much to Dave’s (Their Producer) dismay. They also experimented with effects a lot, which made the iconic bass boost reverb and heathy delay sound they are known for. However as exciting as this sounds. The band wasn’t in good condition. While Alvin hadn’t started drinking or doing drugs yet. Their first step into the hell-fest they would experience was Simons depression diagnosis. The band had switched the roles between Alvin and Simon, Simon was originally the vocalist and Alvin was originally the writer when it came to lyrics. However now that Simon was the writer Dave abused his depressive attitude to make better and more emotional songs. This would make the finished album much better but it wasn’t worth torturing Simon. Theodore however helped Simon whenever he needed it, especially after being abused by Dave.
Theodore even tried to get a new producer. One good candidate was Ian Hawke, a good friend of Theo’s that he met at a bar. However Alvin said that if Dave was gone the bands lyrics would be mostly generic and uninteresting. After the album was out the band started to tour for the first time. Some of the songs from Sludgefest like Call me and My Sharona found their way into this tour. However as successful this tour was. It was when Alvin started to drink. He was convinced by Dave that alcohol is the greatest thing ever and had a drink, he was instantly addicted. After the tour was over complete progress on Sludgefest started. Simons lyrics where getting uncomfortably dark. Alvin and Dave where almost scared of him for this reason and the occasional violent outbursts that he had. However Theodore being the caring guy he is, wasn’t really scared of Simon. More just worried if he was okay. One of the songs that did make Theodore a bit scared was “My Sharona” a song about getting hard AND WANTING TO FUCK A 17 YEAR OLD. Alvin was also drunk most of the time. And later that year he was also introduced and getting addicted to drugs. Sometimes Alvin couldn’t even do the vocals because of how much alcohol he drank. Like in Call me and Refugee. How do I make you has Simons vocals for a different reason tho. Eventually the band finally released Sludgefest. It was an instant hit getting number 1 on the charts. The main single Call me was also really successful and they got a top of the pops appearance. However on their 2nd and final tour. Alvin drank some alcohol while playing heaven is a place on earth. He dropped the bottle on his head. Knocking him out, he died exactly 5 minutes after waking up. Leaving Simon and Theodore to grieve his death. Rip Alvin (1958-1983) Just explained his death And Simon (1957-1997) Stabbed himself in the heart after his Girlfriend broke up with him. Theodore is still alive today and occasionally plays some of chipmunkson16speeds discography with his current band.

I saw these guys open for Big Black and Laughing Hyenas at a Touch and Go showcase at the Cabaret Metro in 1987
I want to see these guys live in concert. Obviously it’ll take them about four days to complete a set but I’m prepared for that.
Saw them back in '84 when they played a local show at the club down the street from my childhood home. The raw energy of this group was unmatched at the time, and still is by any new artists. It was really something ethereal, and once in a lifetime. Alvin had made a habit at the time of arriving to the shows late, and this was no exception. The rest of the band had started without him and the crowd was definitely irritated at first until Alvin rushed the stage looking manic. I had managed to meet Alvin face to face after the show, he didn't have much to say but left me with a quote I will never forget, "In a world of chaos, remember that even a chipmunk can find harmony within the noise." I have reflected heavily on this ever since he passed. RIP Alvin, and my condolences to his family, and bandmates. I wish you all the best, and look forward to the reunion show.
[Edit]: After many years the club that hosted the infamous show has been demolished, and it has been hitting me hard, those memories are behind us now but the spirit and energy of this iconic group still remains, partly I hope we will see another revolutionary project that matches their utter rebelious and righteous vibe but I know it is unlikely. We would all be so lucky to get to live through these experiences again.

i think the reason this is so surreal is that the vocals (which are the part you usually focus on) are pushed to the side for the downtuned instrumentals which gives you way more time to actually listen to the intricate rhythms you usually don't notice listening to the originals
I simply can't believe how good this is.
This is like drinking the melted ICEE
that shit burns ur throat
Made For Each Other on this is legitimately one of my favourite songs of all time
Got the chance to see them on their first tour at their show in Detroit, must have been 83? 84? Wild night, met my first wife down in that basement. Miss you every day Judy.
it's genuinely horrible that dave tried to keep the band alive after alvins death using fucking cgi and sped up voices. just sickening.
My cousin did sound work for these guys back in 88 and said Simon was a sweetheart but he was joking around with alvin and hid his hat in the green room one night at a show in Bridgeport CT and Alvin absolutely lost it and held a gun to his head he went absolutely ballistic my cousin said his eyes were like completely glazed over it was like a different person was there. He later tried to apologize to Alvin and knocked on his hotel room door. Alvin came to the door with a needle hanging out of his arm and said he didn’t even remember being mad at him. It’s crazy what drugs can do to someone
You means the 1800s?
Notice how Simon is facing away from his brothers? What if this is symbolism for how he was the only sober one in the band, free from the grips of Dr*g addiction.
Nah he melting too
@@Blankult He was still addicted, but he thought he was different from the others. He wasn't.
Straight edge Simon is a meme, and more importantly it's his fake ass branding. he was never sober in these recordings, he was just a functional addict. Idk why he's been trying to tell people he was all goodie goodie when we have those old interviews with Dave lol
@@Blankult crap your right
This sounds so much better than original speed. Just changing the speed can make it sound like a different genre than it actually is.
"call me" gives me this weird feeling of adrenaline, like I'm about to get in a fight.
It definitely gives weird vibes of walking into a space with a bunch of men who are going to try and kill you
@@samuelstensgaard4828this. Exactly this vibe.
You Were Always On My Mind:
"She's gone. I know she would have waited for me. She did the best she could, but my wounds ran too deep. And now that she isn't here, I have no light to find my way out of this darkness. The flowers on my hands are wilting, and the only warmth I ever felt is fading.
If only I had tried harder..."
I remember the summer I first heard this record. There was a small article in the back of rolling stone talking about Alvin leaving the Miami Sound Machine over creative differences. Then he brought in his cousins and moved back to his hometown to record. .Pure magic… sumner 83.
Lots of hints of "The Residents" in this too.
This makes the room smell like burnt almonds
The vibes are so powerful I can feel Alvin coming inside me 😫😩😩
I hate you
????
🤔
You just gave me severe flashbacks to when alvin covered himself in shit and tried to crowd surf but then failed. To which in response he put ketamine in the air purifiers which caused almost everyone to get high at like, his last tour. this does have no relation to any of the words in your statement but like.. yeah.
AYOOO
Not going to lie, when Alvin pops the question to the full cup of Nightmare Lean, it moved me to tears.
Good to see this scene is still alive, i wasnt so sure after the OG videos vanished
I always knew their producer Dave was hard on them during this era… but man, you can really hear the pain in Alvin’s voice in ‘Heaven is A Place on Earth’. The drugs, abuse, and grueling touring schedules must have been such a massive part of their fraying relationship. I can understand why Simon “The Quiet Chipmunk” briefly got into Eastern religion and transcendental meditation. #rockandroll
(Simon still makes good music btw, you guys are just hating old heads).
I also wanted to point out that yes, I know Alvin was an abuser himself and hit women (as well as the feces incident) and that Theodore had to deal with that but that doesn’t mean he deserved to die in a microwave. We also have to remember he was a tortured soul, he’d been this way since his father left at age 3 and his mother died in that acorn accident when he was just 15. It’s just a shame he took to heroin to “medicate” his chronic stomach issues.
Walk Like an Egyptian was always meant to be tomb metal.
Diamond Dolls is just so much better than the original.
Alvin may have OD'd. But his music will live on forever.
9:03 sounds bad ass
...BAD is unreal. Are you kidding me? Wow.
I can't stop listening to this, I'm enthralled
I met Theodore once in the lobby of some hotel in Chatanooga, I didn’t want to say anything in an effort to not seem like a pest but before I knew it we were in an elevator together, He looked like he just got through a long night, But I mustered up the courage to ask for an autograph, he was alot nicer than I was expecting, but I could tell he was mentally drained, after learning about the kind of things the band did during there peak I knew that he didn’t want to live that life anymore, I heard he’s now a Pastor down south and him and Simon got together for a small reunion show in a park in Denver a few months back. After what happened with Alvin those years ago I can see that what happened to him changed Theodore and opened his eyes to the mistakes he made in his youth
this is so cool. it sounds like the soundtrack to some gnarly, fringe indie movie lol.
I'm late for the party, these comments had me spending the last half hour searching google for the real "human" chipmunks rock band, as i was digging this track, and honestly feeling quite humbled by the fact that I didn't know music like I thought if I never heard of these "human" chipmunks dudes🤦🏾♂️
Now I must spend the next half hour getting the story behind this fantasized version of the chipmunks bcuz i still don't know what tf is going on.?.?.
Alvin was the definition of dedication. He wanted the audience to really feel the despair and hopelessness of this album, so for most of his vocals on the album, he recorded them completely alone in a rental house in San Francisco. He would purposely put himself in a mood where all seemed lost, so he could then let it all out through his vocals. He would isolate himself, shutting everyone out, leaving him alone for days at a time. He forced himself to get hardly any sleep. Sometimes, none at all. He also repeatedly caused harm to himself, so he was in physical pain. He strongly believed all these factors would lead him to make the album sound as dark and chilling as he intended it to be, and it definitely did.
The synth solo in Call me is so fucking cool and ominous
We didn't know how good we had it in 2015
Holy shit sludge fest is actually real I thought it was a made up album for that whole "why Alvin and the chipmunks broke up"
dude same
Bad seems to be a Primus song
More like NIN imho
@@predotter9883 yeah for it to be primus it would need more slap and cool bass fills and of course dissonant guitar noises
heaven is a place and my sharona are actually flawless
nobody talks about "I love a rainy night" on here and i think we should
They turned walk like an egyptian into a back alley confrontation where you get teased on to spill to the cops but your already cornered. Genius.
Were you guys there when Alvin started crying on stage? It was around 84. I was in the back of the concert with a couple buddies and then he just started crying. Very weird but an enjoyable experience. Fly High Alvin.
And Venus was her naaaame..... *SCREAMS OF AGONY*
So, thanks for putting this up. I just wish I had speakers massive enough to set up at my park, and push play to my neighborhood at 3 in the morning.
Track 11 is crazy,i can't believe Alvin wants to marry a sumerian demon
Made for each other should’ve been the ending it would’ve made a great ending
it should be, this version prolly isn’t chronologically correct
Grimmace what do u mean by that bro
@@InklingFan77Mettaton1936 he probably meant that the uploader just grabbed a number of tracks by “chipmunks on 16speed” and put them into a single volume.
The actual 1st album might have been a different mixture of these songs and songs from album 2 in a different order.
Deggas oh yeah my bad still this would’ve made a great ending
There might be more to David Saville than I'd given credit.
I thought this was a joke, but I assure you: this is no joke. "You Were Always on My Mind" is badass.
I swear to god some songs were added recently. Bad, Mony Mony, I Love a Rainy Night, Made for Each Other, and Venus were NOT on here before! Please tell me I am not going crazy.
It's a remix of the original two uploads, I think the original videos got removed
this is the bandcamp version, the other upload is the soundcloud uploads
i just stumbled upon this what the hell is happening and why is it good
