I cannot look at that Chipmunk Punk cover art without thinking of Sludgefest lol
That's what I thought this video was about lmao.

I love that we all came here for Sludgefest 😂😂😂
Unironically such a good album
shoutout to the sludgefest fans who clicked on this video lol
I cant believe they forced Alvin into the studio after he shot up his girlfriend with that fatal overdose. They had to shove him into the record label's company car just as they shoved her stretcher into the ambulance. This recording perfectly captured the guilt he was trapped with inside the mic booth. The chambers of his heart being eaten alive. Not knowing by the time he finished laying these tracks down, she would be dead, and he would be laying her casket down as well.
if by "They," you mean Simon, you'd be correct. I'm not saying that some of the shit Alvin got up to wasn't fucked up. It was, and it was horrifying. But if you look at the big picture and read between the lines, you can see Simon's influence smeared like feces on an asylum wall.
the funny sludgefest

That footage of punks moshing to this music comedy gold
Thank goodness someone appreciated that. Haha! Thanks!
Admit it. You clicked because you thought it was Melvin and the Sludgerats!
Sludgefest got me through the last stretch of highschool not gonna lie, listened to pretty much the whole album every day as I did my work. The first time i found/listened to it I had a terrible fever, and I didn't like it much. But I came back to it, and fell in love. I wasn't around during the peak of the chipmunks franchise, but I'm now fond of those silly little rodents, might get some vintage plushies of them :) Honestly, id say Sludgefest is one of my top 3 favorite albums of all time. So glad I gave it another listen despite not liking it the first time.
A little know fact is that bjork and Simon had a kinda fling when she was still in the Sugarcubes she does an interview where she basically admits that the peyote fueled jam sessions with Simon provided her inspiration for the vespertine album. The interview is for her hometown paper so it's in Icelandic and hard to find
I wouldn't call abusing a power dynamic a "fling." Simon had already been in the game for over a decade before Bjork came on to the scene. And the fact that Bjork hasn't talked about it in all this time is only more damning to me.
I know that there's only one actual punk track on the album, and, come on. Alvin and the Chipmunks covering "Julie's been working for the Drug Squad", "Anarchy in the UK" and "53rd and 3rd"? Hilarious, and I wish I could live in a reality where that exists.
Sludge never dies
5:08 holy shit that’s good, somebody else did this and released a record centred around the idea. However that is packed with effects and generally just not authentic at all. Can you please release the entire album like this?
Thanks, but it was nothing special at all. I just highlighted a section of the audio in Audacity, clicked EFFECT and then CHANGE SPEED. 50% seems to be the most authentic sounding. Easy enough to do.
@@TeeVeeGames I’m on mobile, don’t have the record and all the uploads sound shit when they are slowed down. At least give me an mp3 of call me
Edit: it also has to be the full song slowed down and high quality or at normal speed but high quality
Edit 2: also if your record player can play songs at 16 speed just do that and make a high quality mp3 and give it to me lmao
@@thecaring9616 I'm not able to do that right now. But someone's already done it anyway.

@@TeeVeeGames 1. I already mentioned that
2. Okay I understand take your time
3. That’s the wrong upload you dumbass

@thecaring9616 what are the effects on Sludgefest?
I’m glad they modified the animation. So much better in the 80’s!
Ironically, DIC had a reputation for making very cheap animation like their predecessor Ruby-Spears, which was formed by the creators of Scooby Doo, which came out of Hanna-Barbera.
That tip-of-the-hat to Buster Keaton shown at 6:21 makes me want to watch the show!
Sludgefest for life
I got this for Christmas when it first came out. I was only 5 but even then I understood just what a killer album this really was.🤘
As for me I have been a fan of The chipmunks for Sixty years now since I was three years old. I wish all twelve albums would be rereleased again. Yes I have all twelve original albums
Frankly, I think some of those albums are underappreciated as music, perhaps because of how ubiquitous digital signal processing has become. They had to actually sing at half speed to do this.
That is NOT trivial. It's rather difficult to merely *speak* at precisely half speed such that the result sounds natural played 50% faster. As a fan, you likely recall how they still seemed to be getting the knack of it in the earliest episodes: even the dialogue had a sludgy tempo at times, if memory serves me (I was born in 1980). I think a lot of younger people don't consider that they didn't have computers to do this. Any mistake, and they had to actually physically cut the tape and splice it together--or else do it all over again.
Just for context, my favorite band is Velvet Underground, lol, and most of my favorite music has never been popular (at least in the US). I couldn't care less that this is so-called "novelty" music. I call it like I see it, and so have to hand it to the Bagdasarians.
Very cool. Thanks for putting this together.
I'm from a generation where I'm old enough to remember watching the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon in the late 80s/early90s and being old enough to discover the wonderful rabbit hole that is Sludgefest. It's wild, yo!
Wow! What a long strange trip it’s been.
Even as a kid I remember being surprised at how good the animation was compared to say, transformers or GI JOE.
Great video, more well researched than some others I've seen on the topic
hey, this isnt chipmunks on 16 speed?
Sure is. Story goes that Borcherdt had the Chipmunk Punk record lying around and experimented playing it at 16 speed on a suitcase turntable, and thus, Sludgefest was born.
I had the Chipmunk Punk LP lol!
And yes, thank you for this!
I know you've probably gotten enough sludgefest related comments to be sick of hearing about it, but when you played "Call Me" at the original pitch the audio sounded very crisp and high quality. Did you just insert a high quality snippet into the audacity track, or did you actually slow down the audio file? If it's the latter then I'd really like to know how you did it, because normally with audacity there's a noticeable quality loss upon slowing down a track (heck, I just did it with Call Me myself and you can hardly make out the vocals sometimes) so having a method to avoid (or minimize) it would be huge.
To be honest, I didn't do anything fancy. I just took my vinyl rip, highlighted a section, reduced speed by half and played it back.
The tracks were ripped to WAV, so I wonder if compression like in mp3 files would introduce undesirable effects when slowing it down. I'm honestly just guessing. Maybe someone more familiar with audio can offer up some input.
@@TeeVeeGames I think that might be it in a roundabout way. What I (and if I had to guess a majority of other people) do is find a rip of the audio online and slow that down as opposed to ripping it from a vinyl. UA-cam probably compresses the files so no matter what way I try downloading a track, it's probably gonna be compressed, so you having a vinyl rip without worry of compression probably lead to those clean results. Thanks for your input, though!

a certified sludgefest moment
I remember seeing them in 89. Alvin was visibly wrecked on heroin and you really started to see how bad his track marks were when he would take off his shirt (this was before he started shooting into his groin) simon was basically delirious on peyote and Theodore was really deep into his "clean living" phase and was emaciated because he would only eat like a couple pieces of celery after nightfall. Still an amazing friggin show even with the violent overdose of Alvins girlfriend towards the end of the set
This came up because I was listening to sludgefest again 😂
Chipmunk “post”-punk would be close enough
Why you published this video same day when i puplished a full album of chipmunk punk ????
this appeared in my recommendations after i watched sludgefest
I have the chipmunk punk album😅
Soooo.... Sludgefest didn't save the Chipmunks career?
Of course not.
SludgeFest!!!!!!
Sludgefest forever !
Ok there's no way this is real,
It's all in the mind.
@@TeeVeeGamesoh
I remember when Chipmunk Punk was initially released. This is very real.
once i saw chipmunk pumk i saw sludgefest
I LITERALLY JUST REALIZED, sludgefest is actually fake. They’re taking existing songs by the chipmunks and making they’re voices lower so they sound different. So this whole time sludgefest didn’t exist at all
...yes? It's slowed down. Isn't that the whole premise?
