It is harder to understand why it's preferred if you don't own one. I am feeling convinced to swap to a humbucker. I put a hot rail in the bridge and it is a huge improvement, but I have a feeling an actual humbucker would be even more of that goodness. Also that clean playing is very beautiful

Unrelated to this video...I took your advice and bought Yamz for ML drums on their black Friday sale. Best decision I ever made. Thank you for your recommendation. On most of these examples in this video I prefer the stock tone. It's brighter and pops out of the mix more.
Thank you so much! I personally love the Yamz. I ended up taking that video down because I forgot to mention some of the flaws, like you can't use it in pro tools and you can't separate kick in and out, snare top bottom etc, also because I called them "the best" and a lot of people made the great point that I haven't tried A LOT of the drum vsts out there so it's not fair for me to call them the "best". BUT, I still love them and use them on my personal tracks because they're my favourite drum tones I've ever used. And I definitely see where you're coming from. It's hard to say because the amp tone was created for the stock pickups and copied to the Impulse. I think if I created the tone for the Impulse the results may be different.
@@BrendonKPadjasek yeah that's fair. With the yamz though I found that I don't have to do a lot of extra processing and also don't separate them like I would other drum vst's and I finally get that kick drum thud to poke out of the mix. I know it's a bummer to do it now since you've gone through the process recently, but it's an easy task and you can do it yourself for sure. What if you had a push pull that could coil split or have the humbucker in parallel instead of series? It would open up new tonal character and possibilities. I’ll have to experiment with that stuff but there were some strange routings with the grounding wire, due to the 4 way switch that I’ve never seen before and makes me think I’m not knowledgeable enough to do it myself
Nice Video! Tbh, I like the stock SCs more. In my opinion the tiny bit of note definition isn´t worth the upgrade money. I have two Subzero Rogue VI and i wanted the Impulse for both so bad but they are pretty expensive in Germany. So I ended up with a Dimarzio Titan in both of my Rogue VI and I can´t be happier with them.
Haha, I’ve had a similar experience with a different L&M in Ontario. Dropped off a 7-string to get it setup with 8-string gauges in a lower tuning and get the nut filed, went to go pick it up, and got it back with just the top 7 strings in standard. Maybe they have some sort of protocol to not allow any niche physical alterations to the guitar itself. Nevertheless, I’ve been setting up my guitars on my own since

Wish they made 8 string impulse pickups! Im in alot of similar tuning as you so it makes sense. What eq do you do on your di before the amp commonly for that bass vi? Sick vid as always!
That would be sick. Maybe I'll see if Josh is planning on that in the future. I don't typically do any, I just choose a gain pedal that I like that cuts out some of those problem areas. I like will putney stl for the gain pedals, turn off the amp and cab and run it into the II II II II or use the ableton stock pedal. I don't often find that scratiness to be a problem to me, I kind of like it, but i haven't found a good way to combat the lack of note definitely that comes from needing to pick in front of the middle pick up. That's why I dig this Impulse
@red240red2 it’s his hole amp sim tonality which is a lot to pay to just use the pedal side of things lmao. I feel like and tube screamer type pedal would do what I want it to do
@@BrendonKPadjasek I ordered an Aristides 080S about six months ago and wanted to get an Impulse singlecoil in the neck, but they checked with BKP and said they couldn't do any rail pickups at that size. Hopefully that changes!
Would I need to do any crazy routing or anything if I wanted to get the single coil impulses instead of doing the crazy humbucker way like you did? haha
What do you think about Fishman Fluence’s instead of the impulse? I’m leaning for a more deathcore style of writing with this guitar and I know nothing of the bareknuckle impulses.
Hmm I’m not sure tbh. I haven’t owned or played a guitar with fishmans so I’m not sure. I have 3 guitars with different bare knuckle pickups and k love them all. I have the pain killers in one 7 string, the aftermath in another and now the impulse in this. I love them. Amazing quality. I’m sure fishmans are sick too though
@ I think I might just play it safe and go with the Bareknuckle then. I feel like adding the active element to it is just over complicating it, thank you for getting back to me man! Already called a shop and had the guy telling me to use a different pickup as well 😂. Also told me I won’t be able to find a pick guard so I wanted to ask one last thing. Did you just have your guy cut your original one to fit the humbucker?
the people saying it “sounds better” with the old pickup are just hearing more top end and less low mids because it’s a single coil, which tricks your ears into thinking it’s a better sound. In the video though, he shows pretty clear examples of how the fundamental note of what he’s playing translates way more effectively with the humbucker, which is much more important from an audio engineering and songwriting perspective. He could easily EQ match his guitar DI before the amp so that the new pickup has a similar EQ curve to the old single coil, and then he’d have the best of both sounds. But I don’t think that was the point of this video lol
Question for ya : I know in previous videos you had mentioned a couple times that the output of the stock guitar was extremely low compared to other guitars. With upgrading the pickup, did you see much of a different in that area?
Thanks for asking! Totally forgot to mention that. There’s not much of a difference tbh, maybe a few db, but I think now that I can pick closer to the bridge pickup and get great results it’s definitely louder when I need to do single notes/ bends. It was definitely quiet as hell and noisier when picking over the middle pick up to get any useable note. Can’t believe I didn’t mention that either. My bay
Not really no. I just throw a gain/ Overdrive plugin before and let er rip. If I need to I’ll lower or increase the input gain but I usually leave it to +2 and leave it as is. I might do an in depth tone creation with the plugin soon
I bought that exact guitar in part for this channel and it's been an adventure, to say the least, I haven't put it down since! But I have a question, my intonation with the sixth string is all over the place and I'm not that low. I'm at double D standard. Picking on it makes it go waaay higher than its actual tuning. Any advice on that? Thanks!
@ I just got the 100 - 24 gauge from Fender. What do you think? Hope it holds up better than the ones that came by default when I bought it hahah. Also, haven’t tried the flipped neck trick, but once I try to intonate it again with the new strings, I’ll see how it holds up, and if not, I’ll flip it!
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned at all, but I assume some hum probably went away when you dropped from single coil to humbucker unless I am mistaken?
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t mention that. It’s definitely better but it’s not 100% gone. I’ll have to do a separate video on that. Thanks for mentioning it! When making a video some things go under the radar so I appreciate that!
Hmm, can you give me more info about what you’re doing and what you don’t like about your tone? Including amp sim, tuning, recording technique and as much info as possible
my problem is with the simulations which always hiss in the high band... if I use the equalizer I start to lose those frequencies and something is missing in the guitars... Thank you for your interest in the topic 🖤

I definitely love the jangle they create. In a perfect world I'd have the jangle of the stock, with the low end definition of the Impulse. Maybe I should have got the impulse single coils
@BrendonKPadjasek it's Matt's but yesir they're still stock but in the 7 string on the ep you mixed they were Impulses and I still have that bad boy and it's my favorite
I would keep it stock myself, I like the stock pickups brightness and wildness. the barenuckle pickup sounds a lot more composed if that makes sense, it sounds way more sofisticated actually. Both sound amazing, but I do love the single coil sound, albeit a little lost goosey sounding.
That actually makes a lot of sense. Since the pick up is “composed” for low tuning and for being a guitar where, as fender describes, the instrument is meant to be treated as a bass. It just happens that those stock pickups sound amazing for metal
It’s nice to know that it sounds great as is out of the box. I prefer the Impulse for the reasons I stated in the video, but also like I said, I was already incredible happy with the stock pickups

@@BrendonKPadjasek that would be awesome!
Ill have to check out stls pedals!
@shinokugt that’s good to know thanks for commenting that for others in the same boat
Would I need to do any crazy routing or anything if I wanted to get the single coil impulses instead of doing the crazy humbucker way like you did? haha
Hahahaha very good question. I don’t believe so no but I do think you can email Bare Knuckle and confirm
@jacksodudee ahh interesting. Yeah I have such limited experience with them it’s hard to say. Luckily the guy routed it for me
the people saying it “sounds better” with the old pickup are just hearing more top end and less low mids because it’s a single coil, which tricks your ears into thinking it’s a better sound.
You nailed it! And I guess I’m looking at it as an audio engineer and knowing what sacrifices I have to make with the stock pickups
Not to mention knowing the difference between what makes for a good tone in a vacuum, jamming by yourself, and what sounds good in a mix
@shinokugt you gotta spend a lot of time training those ears but for sure
Question for ya :
I know in previous videos you had mentioned a couple times that the output of the stock guitar was extremely low compared to other guitars.
My bay
Do you do any difference in input gain when using otto 11 compared to other amp sims?
Not really no. I just throw a gain/ Overdrive plugin before and let er rip. If I need to I’ll lower or increase the input gain but I usually leave it to +2 and leave it as is. I might do an in depth tone creation with the plugin soon
$600 for a pickup change and a bit of routing? with a week of downtime? damn, I'd love to be a guitar tech wherever you are.
half of that price was the pickup itself haha so he actually charged just under $300 CAD. So like $210 USD
@@BrendonKPadjasek that's still like a $100/hr job... ah, a man can dream.
Thanks!
Interesting. Did you do the bridge flip and push the top saddle as far back as possible? Also which string gauge?
@ I just got the 100 - 24 gauge from Fender. What do you think? Hope it holds up better than the ones that came by default when I bought it hahah. Also, haven’t tried the flipped neck trick, but once I try to intonate it again with the new strings, I’ll see how it holds up, and if not, I’ll flip it!
@joex-mn4we that’s the gauge I use and have had great luck in drop A0 and drop B using it
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned at all, but I assume some hum probably went away when you dropped from single coil to humbucker unless I am mistaken?
Wow I can’t believe I didn’t mention that. It’s definitely better but it’s not 100% gone. I’ll have to do a separate video on that. Thanks for mentioning it! When making a video some things go under the radar so I appreciate that!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but my guitar never sounds like it does in the creators' videos.
Hmm, can you give me more info about what you’re doing and what you don’t like about your tone? Including amp sim, tuning, recording technique and as much info as possible
It's probably a good thing , you don't want to sound like everyone else
my problem is with the simulations which always hiss in the high band... if I use the equalizer I start to lose those frequencies and something is missing in the guitars... Thank you for your interest in the topic 🖤
@@BrendonKPadjasekyeah I’ve dealt with the same thing. I run an Ibanez RGT62 >DI box(passive)> focusrite> ndsp gojira or amped roots. NOW I KNOW I don’t have a pair a of studio monitors yet but I do have headphones. Also had my guitar set up professionally a couple months ago.
@@BrendonKPadjasek
I've tried many guitars, both expensive and cheaper :) the interface I record with is SSL2, inspired by your riffs I decided to buy Squier, but the problem remained😆

Sounds thicc n sick to me! I have that pickup in my 28.5" parts thallstick and it sounds nice
That’s amazing. Which tuning are you using for that guitar?
@@BrendonKPadjasek it's in e standard an octave down (E1). I had an evertune put on it and it sounded better before which was a bit of a bummer but it's still cool
Oh really? What characteristics are you finding about it now with the evertune?
@@BrendonKPadjasek just sounds kind of dead / hollow. They also kind of sucked to deal with which is another story. it's weird because I have other guitars that came with ET that sound fine; I'm still an ET stan for recording at the end of the day but I do regret that one a little.
Yeah it’s interesting knowing what could have been haha. I guess maybe they had to carve out too much wood out of the guitar and that killed some of the tone? Not exactly sure how ever tune works
Wow that story aboit the guitar tech sounded so annoying hahahaha. Sorry you dealt with that dude. Crazy that you were paying this guy and he had the nerve to criticize you like that 😂 pickup sounds very nice but oddly enough, i really liked the sound from the stock pickup as well!
Hahaha I know right? I was to be honest baffled by him. He ended up doing a great job but definitely strange as hell.
Yeah it’s really nice to know that you can get away with the stock pickup and have a great sounding guitar for as cheap as it is
i think i might like the stock more. it sounds more ignorant, but in a good way lol
I definitely love the jangle they create. In a perfect world I'd have the jangle of the stock, with the low end definition of the Impulse. Maybe I should have got the impulse single coils
@@BrendonKPadjasek you already spent enough money on this endeavor. Don't let endless possibilities make you feel guilty about your purchase. 👍
@ixijmackixi lmao that’s exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you haha
Gosh, I hope my tech is cooler about routing. 😅
hahah there's only 1 way to find out
It's literally the best pickup for low tunings
I love it so far. Very happy with my decision. Are you still rocking the stock pickups on yours?
@BrendonKPadjasek it's Matt's but yesir they're still stock but in the 7 string on the ep you mixed they were Impulses and I still have that bad boy and it's my favorite
@brianwilliams7930 that guitar sounded great! Are you guys working on new stuff?
@BrendonKPadjasek thanks brotha and yes we are!
@brianwilliams7930 very glad to hear that!
I like the stock way better, seems a lot clearer to me while the impulse loads too much bass for the tones... I'll have another listen tomorrow
It’s nice to know that it sounds great as is out of the box. I prefer the Impulse for the reasons I stated in the video, but also like I said, I was already incredible happy with the stock pickups
You: "Let me know what you want to see."
Me: You, laying in bed, hugging your pillow and crying over all the adsense money you just wasted on this pickup swap.
Moral: Listen to your guitar tech friend Al. What good is having a fantastic guitar tech friend like Al if you don't listen to him?
He tried to save you all the time & expense, but you still LITERALLY PAID MORE THAN THE COST OF A BRAND NEW SQUIRE BASS VI FOR THIS SILLYNESS!!!!!!!!!!! #.# .... I see you Al. I see you.
^^^^ That being said... your playing, recording and mixing skills are ON POINT... regardless of what pickup you have installed.
hahahaha well I don't think I'll make a video of that but you raise some very good points. I knew this going into it as well but since a lot of people seemed interested I went through with it so people can decide for themselves if its worth the upgrade or if they'll pass on it. Al is phenomenal at what he does for sure
@@Cacophonous_Cat thank you!
@@BrendonKPadjasek Earned compliment young man. I was impressed. Also... you should TOTALLY make that video. After all, you did spend more than the cost of the Bass VI on a pickup. Just ask Al, I bet he would agree. :)
The bkp’s don’t sound better once it’s mixed. Pickups are super overrated especially by the time it’s fully mixed and mastered
You're 100% right that the right engineer will make whatever you use sound great. BUT , as I pointed out the amp tone was created for the stock pickups so if I catered the tone to the BKPs you might say the BKPs sound better.
stock is better dude.
Definitely agree for certain tone parts but like I said, being able to pick near the bridge like I normally do is reason enough for me to roll with them. but the stock is strangely good. Great to know you can roll with the stock and get amazing tones. I think I'm gonna get a second Bass VI to experiment
The single coils sound better for these tunings honestly. P90s sound even better, it's what the newest Silent Planet album is recorded with.
P90's are hella fun to play with, the only downside is that they are daaamn noisy + low output. I hate bass vi stock pickups, they have that specific sound which I just can't deal with.
That album sounds great but it’s also a Buster mix so whatever they use would would amazing cause he’s a genius haha
@beanpastekabana that’s my reason for enjoying the Impulses. There’s a jangle that I have to work around
