"X" is one of my favorite movies of all time. His direction in that movie was so amazing. Between X and School Daze I had both of those movies on repeat in my dorm room during my time in college. Spike isn't talked about enough imo, so I'm definitely happy to see his name pop up in your series!
Completely agree Chris. Spike Lee is definitely not talked about enough and what he accomplished and did for the filmmaking world was too much to summarise in one video!

Excellent work once again, T! Highlighting some early favorites here. 'She's Gotta Have It' and 'Do The Right Thing' are life changers for visual artists and storytellers. Later works like 'Summer of Sam' and '25th Hour' have some intensely strong visuals and movement that came to mind watching this.
Completely agree. I actually watched summer of Sam recently and actually knowing the full story I was so impressed and jeez that film is completely underrated in my opinion. Thank you for watching John!

Great insight. As a photographer, I’m recently starting to learn/appreciate the differences between what a director vs a cinematographer brings to the visuals of a movie. Spike definitely had an influence, but cinematographer Ernest Dickerson worked on most of the early Spike films. Also, be sure to check out the work of Bradford Young; he blends the principles of cinematography and still photography very well.

Yeah, like a DP is to give the viewers the best visual experience while the director need to balance the movie's dramatic moment with the visual experience or not to overcome by it. Back then, I was fortunate to have a chance to learn about being a director, working in a broadcast TV control room. The control, mindset and experience were different from being a camera person, editor, photographer, etc. While today's B-roll, color grading, etc. are new and exciting to many, but I think directing is the unicorn.

I bought & learned to frame pictures on a 14mm lens I brought & omg it has been so challenging, I got it bc of Wes Anderson movies lol
My favourite Spike Lee films are School Daze, Mo Better and She's Gotta Have It. The former two are very influential in style, you can see a lot of the style from 'She's' and Mo Better' in a lot of blockbuster movies for the next couple of years after the release of each. Ernest Dickerson had a huge effect on the end product as well which is worthy of note.

Great video . Do the right thing it was a mind lights on for me , when i watch it for the first time on tv in the middle 90s . Of course it was nothing to really relate it to as i grow up in the hoods of Buenos Aires . But the strong sense of morality and humanity is worldwide .

Ah Brooklyn! My spiritual home. I think Spike Lee's use of color and angles has definitely influenced a whole generation of younger film photographers who prefer a more vivid palate than just the Porta 400 desaturated look to the point where there is a California vs New York look to over generalize.
