    I have had an AT2020 USB for almost a decade now and still use it pretty often, recently bought the Rode NT1-A (XLR) and i am stunned at how good it is for voice overs! A podcaster friend on a budget bought a Samson Q2U and sounds pretty good too as a dynamic mic in their untreated room (the ATR2100 is almost a perfect same of it.)
    Great video as always Mike!

      All of these mics are very good USB mics and I realise this won't be too much help but obviously different mics suit different voices better. All I can say is all of them worked fine for me and you can hear in the comparisons the difference in my voice across the tests.

    AKG Lyra sounds best to me, followed closely by Beyerdynamic Fox. Both sound the most natural. The others had at least one flaw that went against them like high background noise, artificial sounding, hollowness, tone, too crisp.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому +1

      There is no definitive answer here I'm afraid. The rule is to make sure the background music remains in the background and doesn't compete with the speech. The answer depends on the background music being used and the processing used on the voice recording.

    • @MikeRussell

      Not all the mics have a mute function so I've done a comparison of the standard features so you can compare audio like for like.

    • @JRossHunter
      @JRossHunter 3 роки тому

      @@MikeRussell Understood. I'm not in the market for any of those mic, but was curious about how the function worked. What we called a "cough switch" was a separate switch so you didn't touch the mic. It operated silently. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the purpose of the mute button.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому

      I’d imagine a mute button on the mic would be impossible to operate in silence but as I say it’s not something I’ve tested.

    Hi Mike, nice video. I just wanted to ask how you get your songs on your laptop? Where do you download them as stereo? I usually download the music videos and then convert them to mp3 through Twisted Wave. However, Twisted Wave converts the audio to mono. Will that make it hard for me to isolate vocals or make a song instrumental? I saw your video on the first one and I noticed that your track was stereo at first, so I'm just wondering. I have also put songs I downloaded from iTunes onto my laptop as WAVE files and tried following your tutorials with but nothing seems to work for me. By the way, I use Audacity. I'd appreciate your input as I'd like to make mashups and megamixes as a hobby. Thank you.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  2 роки тому

      Hi Lisa. The choices are almost infinite for you depending on expectations and budget.
      First choice is XLR vs USB. An XLR mic will need an interface to plug in to to connect to your computer, a USB will plug directly into your computer.
      You then have the choice of condenser or dynamic which will be partially dependent on your recording space.
      I would recommend you avoid a gimmick mic that promises auto tune if you’re serious about singing, record raw and do anything you want in post processing.

    Is it possible to use BlueYeti for members sitting around a table?

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому +1

      Blue Yeti does have an omnidirectional mode but in order to use this effectively you'd really need to be in an acoustically treated space otherwise the amount of room tone and reflections picked up may ruin your recording.

      These are what I'd call budget mics. With microphones you generally get what you pay for so I'd look at getting something like one of these if you're looking to get decent quality audio.

    I bought a Blue Yeti a few months ago as I was venturing in to the world of becoming a voice over artist for a profession.
    I've already upgraded to a RODE NT1 with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen (will upgrade that in the future), because USB microphones don't seem to be able to capture the sound in the same way that XLR microphones do (to me, at least).
    If anyone wanted to get the best possible voice, i'd recommend steering clear of anything USB.

    • @MikeRussell
      @MikeRussell  3 роки тому

      Early USB mics were poor but most of the more recent mics are actually not bad now at all. The Rode NT1 is not a bad mic however and it’ll help you get your voice over business started.

      I have the snowball too. I was hoping Mike was going to review the snowball specs. I guess I"ll have to look, because I can't remember. The gain is PERFECT for VO work, coming in at around -8db with it mounted on a boom around 8" from my mouth. I had a Yeti years ago and it was the warmest sounding mic I've ever owned truthfully, only preceded by a Rode NT-1 which I was I still had, but I don't have a phantom Amp XLR interface anymore for it.

      Based on your requirements for a microphone that can highlight the different nuances of your high-pitched voice, I would recommend the AKG Lyra as it has a versatile pickup pattern and excellent sensitivity, perfect for capturing the nuances in your vocals.
