The small Fender Tweed Combo behind the classic KISS guitar tone!

- To most people Kiss is about Marshall full stacks. Ace revealed in a video that much of their tone actually came from a small Fender Combo! In this video we play this mystery 1x10" Fender Tweed Combo that Ace Frehley and Kiss used to get their classic tone in the mid 1970s
That's probably the best guitar amp tone I've ever heard!
Thanks, it’s great to hear that! Cheers
It's a good tone, but check out the Carr amp that Johan presented recently. That thing is amazing!
The tweed is so thin that you can see the finger joints of the cabinet. This amp is a "Where did the last 12 hours go?" kind of amp. Play it all day.
Yeah, we had a blast playing it! Cheers
Thank you Johan for sharing so freely the wonders of tone. The world wouldn't be the same without you
Cheers.
Thanks my friend, Cheers!
sharing so 'Frehley' I guess..
Certainly sounds like the core of Ace's tone around 1975. Absolutely classic, iconic tone!
That sounded absolutely "ACE"! Love it. Great find Johan, some amazing tones.
Thanks Isaac!
Damn,
Johan, you coaxed incredible tones out of yet another amp!! Keep on rockin’ brother!
Thanks Brother!
Wow, that’s probably one of the best tones on your channel. That’s some serious amount of drive with that volume on 5.
Superb choice of pairing the LP and the Vibrolux for the demo! The tone was magnificent! Thanks Johan!
Glad to hear it, thanks!
Damn, I knew this would be epic, sorry I missed the premiere, cheers Johan🎸🎶👊
Thanks Blackcountry! Cheers!
One of the best tones I remember hearing out of the channel, Johan.
Thanks lago
Thank you for this video, The amp has a beautiful vintage tweed tone!
Thanks Angie, glad you like it!
Such a great tone, good week-end !
Thanks Michel, have a great weekend!
Man, that bark that you just can't get out of most amps!!!! This amp sounds badass!!!
Always great! And also the furniture and design of your living rooms - good taste!
Thanks! Great to hear that!
Great sounding amp, I'm loving more and more tweed amps lately. I'm getting old I guess!
Hahaha! Cheers Davide! I’m already old, Welcome to the club!
Hey man ,,,if you love the sound of marshall in the 60's you are listening to a tweed bassman with british tubes and speakers with minor changes in the tone stack.
This is where rock and roll was BORN !!!
You and Simon both have such great playing styles!
Thanks, it’s great to hear that!
I have a ‘57 Harvard (non-vibrolux) and love it, especially when a variac. Mine was modified years ago for a 12 and I put a Celestion EVH, really sounds great.
Awesome rock'n'roll tones there in an unexpectedly small package, and those dynamics with the P90!
That sounded great, what a sweet sounding amp.
Thanks Ron!
Jesus! That's a tone to die for! Love that "Bluesy" piece at 2:31
Damn, what a great sounding rig...great playing too 👍🏻
Thanks Carl!
That’s quite a smooth overdrive tone. Sounds really nice. I had no idea the Harvard/Vibroluxes could rock that hard. Very cool. A guy I built a Deluxe for wanted to know if I’d build a Harvard clone. That may just have to be next up on the list to build. Thanks for the great video & demonstration!
Thanks Mike!
Sounds so good!
That tone/technique you demonstrate at 4:22 is a premium example of where that guitar and amp can go when the player is not trying to blow someone's head off. Such taste!
Oh, and the vid effects - very entertaining!
Awesome! ⚡⚡
Desert island amp would say Fender on the front and have tubes in the back.
I bought the newest Tweed Pro Junior with the Jensen P10R stock. Would love to hear your demo and thoughts. I love it.
There is a demo of a early dumble with tremolo on UA-cam and this amp is very close to it in dynamics and tone. Would love to here it with a slide. Phenomenal sound !
Glad to hear that!
Amazing tone!
Thanks!
Always thought the LP jr looked cool. This one sounds great. The amp is very very nice too, there is some Ace in there for sure. If you do have the opportunity it would be interesting to hear it with different guitars. Keep up the good work and cheers!
Cheers!
For sure small Fender Tweed combos were the main core sound, at least in the studio, for many : Ronnie Montrose used his beloved one in Montrose first albums, there' s a picture online of Ace Freheley in the studio with a small tweed along with some teles and strats, the guitars were used for layering sounds!

Neil young,Clapton, ect
Thanks for the pic! Ace looks 12 feet tall!
@@samfosdick9874 you are welcome! Yes, he looks like a giant in a tiny room! :-D
That's an awesome picture, thanks
@@jon.wilson You are welcome!
Sounds effing amazing.
Thanks! :-)
What's effing? Does that have to do with mrs. Claus and elves?
Great tone for blues and classic rock! I was expecting a Les Paul with a Super Distortion to match the Frehley's sound but it's close as is.
I got a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe III and is awesome when I play some hearly kiss stuff.
Just amazing.
Hi Johan. I'm not a kiss fan, but the fan sounds gorgeous and your ( you and Simon ) was very good. Your clean bits redefined the word chimey in my book. Have a great weekend. See ya Monday.
Sorry I mean the amp sounds gorgeous and not the fan 😁
Thanks my friend, you have a great one too!
Thank you! I was looking for the topography of the vibrolux and harvard. Great because of lots of neg feedback. More drive without the smoosh.
Hey Johan same week same feeling of big surprise, thanxx a lot... yes it reminds me earlier Kiss LP's. Nice Frehley's tone mate. Cheers Im thirsty of music and beer today
Cheers man! :-)
Wow, what low end on that little speaker. Great tones.
Thanks DC!
Hoy did you processed the last part? It looks awesome!
See also: 70’s Aerosmith. ‘Sweet Emotion’, ‘Walk This Way’ etc.
mtemps 79 Aerosmith used Ampegs for Toys in the Attic
Awesome, haha, never thought of that. Have to listen to old Kiss records again.
Thanks :-)
Did you use an overdrive in front of this amp and what settings did you have it at for the heavy/od sound? Thank you for all your vids!!
Thanks Jeffrey! We went straight into the amp. I think volume and tone was about at 75%
@@JohanSegeborn Thank you!
There are 2 mikes in front of the amp. What are they plugged into? If we’re not hearing the direct Harvard tone, tell us or show us what the mikes are doing to the mix. I see lots of demos with miked amps, but I am never sure what the miking is doing to the tone. Thanks for the demo and the great playing. . .
oh yeah, that's glorious..that's the tone I've been chasing
Such a big tone from such a small amp!
Thanks Patrik! Glad you like it!
This will be interesting👍
Sounds great recorded! How did the 10 inch speaker fill the room?
Thanks, it does a surprisingly good job actually. Cheers
What a lovely tone! Would like to hear with him buckets and also a strat.
Thanks!
Awesome tones, nice to see Simon play something besides a strat. Pretty wide difference in tones just from the difference in pick attack.
Thanks Skyler!
Killer tone!!!
🌞🌞🌞 amazing!
Sick tones Johan!!!! Cranked small amps rule!!! Would be interesting to hear a side by side of this amp and say like a new cranked Princeton Reverb!
Thanks, that would be interesting indeed!
I have a kit clone of this amp, with a 12” speaker. It sounds amazing
My dog likes to lay down in front of it while I play so I have to go in the garage if I want to crank it. It gets loud for a small amp!
One day I hope to try a real one to see how close mine sounds
Wow, that tone starting at 3:15!!!
Edit: Wow, the tone through this whole clip!!!
First. Welcome back, haven't seen you in a while Johan. Always good to hear from you.
Thanks! I have actually been releasing a clip every other day for the last couple of years. Was it missing in your feed for a while?
Did not expect this amp to sound so good. Looks like one mic off axis towards cone and the other mic more towards speaker edge?
Thanks, yeah I try to find to mic positions that complement each other, usually done by trial and error. Cheers
Great Black Crowes tone at 3:15. Just goes to show that you don’t need a stack to get a great guitar tone.
Thanks Mike
Sounds great. Did ace use super distortions in the studio or just live?
Thanks! He probably used it in the studio as well
Yeah, THAT was all over Dressed to Kill! I have it in 'Nothing to Lose - The Making of KISS' Binky, stated Ace was using a small amp in a cardboard box with a mic in it to get a punchy sound, and he drew an amp design on the box with a Sharpie marking pen! LOL!
So it WOULD have been something liek this. But I think his solos WERE done thru a Marshall 1/2 stack, as in another excerpt from Binky Phillips said he saw Ace plugged into a Marshall to lay down some lead guitar tracks.
So he may have used something like this for his rhythm guitar tracks.
These amps sound epic through a couple of old G12H30s...... Try it!!!! You won't regret it!!!! Cheers, this is one of my favorite amps of all time 👍
Thanks Jeremy! I believe you! G12H30 is my favorite open back 1x12 speaker
That tone is nice.
Johan ! Is that reverb coming from the amp and room ? Or is that added to the recording ?
It’s mostly from the room, but I added some in post as well to make it bigger. This room is amazing
Fender tweed amps had no reverb and the tail sounds quite long. Added to the recording is my guess.
Wow,I want one now.
Cheers Mark
Hi, Johan!
I hope, maybe I will find a way to get one like this Combo. This is not so hard, but the main problem is money. Anyway, I wish, something will bring me all I need. Have a nice weekend!
See you!
Zigfrid
You have a nice weekend too my friend!
Ziggy...work on your English dude and call me! Also...come down to the "states" and jam with me and my boys!!!
@@samfosdick9874 Yeah, I made some mistakes. I'll call you soon. \m/
Nice!!! Try the Mark 1 boogie for early hard rock tones !!!!
Nothing like the glory day of KISS in the mid 70's! Know you are fan Johan! Cheers...
So, you think it was Marshall? Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn So many greats recorded on smaller amps in the studio. Must be a thrill for you guys to be able to play through that amp.
You forgot he also used a Electro-Harmonix LPB- 1 booster into this amp, big difference, along with super distortion pickups
Could there have been some sustain unit added to this on solos? Im not too familiar with the early kiss, but maybe tracks like strutter I can see it being used on the rhythm tracks. However the likes of God of Thunder and Detroit Rock City I think maybe uses some other gear.
MAKES me wanna rock n roll all nite, & party every day!! \m/
Cheers DMS!
@@JohanSegeborn AWK!
I got to borrow a 50's wide panel Fender and when cranked it had the almost identical tonal characteristics as heard here. Some fizz on top combined with a pronounced low-mid push. And in the middle is just pure tone. These are literally 3-dimensional tone producers.
That is really fantastic tone!!! Of course the volume is ear shattering to get the vibralux to overdrive like that, but still, wow! Not enough people give credit to a Les Paul with humbuckers through an old cranked Fender amp.
Thanks Colin!
Have you ever heard of Neil young, Keith Richards, Robbie Robertson, Buddy guy ? I'm sure there's plenty more people I can't remember off the top of my head right now but those are a few big names that come to mind when talking about "who played humbucker equipped guitars into tweed fender amplifiers" but yeah, if you look there's plenty of historical info on the players and their gear here on UA-cam. 😉
Not to split hairs, but wouldn't a Tweed Princeton be more similar to a Harvard than the Vibrolux? I have a 66 Princeton amp, and the lack of the extra circuity (for the reverb in this case) makes it's a *very* different sounding amp than the Princeton Reverb. I don't know if the tremolo circuitry of the Vibrolux would change the tone as much as reverb circuitry, but it seems like it possibly could?
Cool effects reminds me of a scanner darkly
Thanks!
Harvards are the best! Vibroluxes are great as well, great demo to be followed with some strays and télés I hope!
Thanks! We’ll keep it in mind!
Maybe this amps more modern aquivalent is the fender Pro jr v.? It have the same concept. Mine sounds very cool with a ts808...
I hear Dressed To Kill tones !
Yeah, I got those vibes too!
i should listen to some old kiss this tone is great
Glad to hear it, Dennis! Cheers
The treble:y tone definitely sounds like Kiss/Ace Frehley. I listened to Cold Gin and Deuce for comparison. Cheers 🍻
Cheers Daniel!
That's funny. Steve Cropper used a Harvard for those classics of Booker T and the MGs.
Wow didn't Randy Rhoads have one also I love the sound of amp and guitar Awesome
Thanks Jason!
Let's go!
:-)
The Harvard 6AT6 triode part is very similar to a 5751(only a lower max operating voltage). If you really want to get close, use a 5751 in V1 of the 5F11 Vibrolux.
Thanks Matt
Sound fkn great!
Thanks man, glad to hear it!
This is my grail amp
Did you try this amp with a super distortion loaded Les Paul?
No, I’ll bring one next time
Awesome! That's when I think the Ace Frehley genie will come out of the bottle.
Steve Cropper used a Harvard in Early Booker T and MGs. Like the Junior with that amp, P90s are "FAT" and single coil, petfect!
Wheres the black beauty? Not a huge kiss fan, may have been if not for the costumes but your tone is always good. I think using such different amps for live vs studio is a testament of a good mixer.
ALIVE! was a LIVE setup ( Marshalls, Ampegs, Pearl drums) and they played straight through each track. Obviously this was an attempt to sound as LIVE as they could under a controlled environment. Maybe Ace overdubbed a little with his Harvard ? I personally only hear MARSHALL.
I think most all of Ace's stuff on KISS' studio stuff was a Harvard being cranked and pushed ( ehx lpb1). Exceptions are 'Hotter than Hell' and ALIVE! and ALIVE!2 (1959 Marshalls set to clipping).......I Think that 'Rock and Roll Over' has Ace's best overall sound and performance ( probably the Harvard).
The Gibson P90 pickup is even too hot for that sensitive beast! Wow.
I think he used the OX amp behind it
How different does a 5F2a Princeton sound from a Harvard?
Bump bump
I have the need for tweed.... I may be trading a 100 watt marshall 1973 superlead plus a 2015 les paul junior for one of these today.
Que opinas del fender princeton de 1957
Small in size, HUGE in timbre!
Yeah, it sounded huge indeed!
@@JohanSegeborn Whoa! What a wonderful combination... the P90 really pushed the circuit into glorious sounding overdrive, but backing off cleaned it up so wonderfully. Coupled with he tremolo, (and talented players with the gift of subtlety) I think we can agree that this rig is fully capable of every sound and nuance that we might need. Reverb would be nice, but I'm not sure it's needed on board the amp with all the different colors of tone.
This is one of my favorite vids or yours... I really didn't want it to end. Bravo!
I thought at 5:16 he was gonna play Livin on the Edge by Aerosmith.
Dream rig
Cheers Jake
Me too ! That green guitar DC LPJR and the tweed tremolo reverb amp is all I need !
Mine has a 12” in it
Great guitar-amp combination. Scandinavia just got a little hotter and swampier I think.
Hahaha! Cheers :-)
Traynor bassmate YBA 2B is based on the harvard. Mine sounds unreal with an ocd fulltone Better than a marshall.
