Hey this not a fair comparison at all. Yes you can compare the L12 and the Tascam because they both can do multitrack recording onboard with an SD card one track=t at a time if need be.. But the Mackie can not do that at all!! It can only record a stereo SD card file no matter how many tracks you record. It is only a true multitrack recorder if hooked up to a DAW

Big Big win for TASCAM having additional global eq controls at the master output stage. That is a must for live sound. That’s more important than the looks.

I have the Model 24, rocking it old school. It works great for live club situations. Recording band rehearsals. And then coming back to my studio and dragging all the tracks into my DAW. For final mixing and mastering. I know there are many better boards out there. But in my honest opinion it is very versatile with a lot of features in the bang for the buck category. Thanks for your very honest and informative video.

I own the Tascam Model 24 and the SSl Big Six. I had bought the Model 24 just as the Big Six was released. The Tascam Model 24, is Pro Quality. It is SO WARM sounding. You get the analog vibe right out of the gate and even my wife could hear it. It might actually be to warm for younger guys or folks who prefer bright digital sounds. The model 24 also does some things that my SSL won't do. It has Reverb and fx built in that I can use live, without recording it. I can give the singer some reverb, but record him dry. The analog EQ does not record through though. The SSL Big Six does. I do prefer the SSL Big Six. But if you can't afford the Big Six, go for the Tascam. Or if you prefer a very warm, darker sound, go with the Tascam. The Big Six is bright and clean, but also warm. But it is bright and warm. Plus the Big Six has more tracking options and more mixing options (Bus Compression is KILLER).

Thanks for the review, I have been viewing all these machines and this is my own conclusion, the L12 is only good if you on a tight budget, the Onyx 12 looks good and has tons of connectivity + mains powered (no wall wart), however the Tascam Model 12 is the best for multitracking and also has MIDI in and out, therefore that is the one that most suits my needs and the one I'll be going for.

Best review I've seen on these! Gotta agree the Mackie is the way to go, but for a different reason. #1 reason for me is the "built like a tank" part. If I was ONLY using it in a studio, I'd probably go with the Tascam. We were playing an outdoor gig last month where it was 95 and we managed to fry a Soundcraft mixer. Bass player fortunately had a "backup" 5-year-old Mackie and it pulled us through. They do a good job of being "roadworthy", these things ain't cheap and stuff gets beat up at gigs.

I've had the Model 12 for over a year now and it fits well with what I wanna do. I like the Zoom for the headphone outs but recently I record solo and use the sub to feed a tube headphone amp. I want to have a one touch recorder so I can play without thinking about the mixing part. Then later I can stuff the mem card into a computer and mix there. For under $600 it was perfect for me. If I were to record in a band environment I have an older Yamaha mixer I could get all the drum mics into a stereo mix before sending it to the Tascam. Great video, thanks for the info.

I've literally just got the Citronic and the Akai this week so I will be testing them out before showing what they can do. I still have to learn the Tascam as it does need a bit of a deep dive. Thanks for making this video! I currently have the L-8 which I've used for a mixture of podcast/content creator and home studio recording. Unfortunately it's developed some problems with the USB audio, so I'm on the hunt for a new mixer. Oddly enough, I'm torn between the Model 12, and the Mackie DLZ Creator. Two very different devices, but both support the multitrack and live mixing features I need, along with enough EQ/FX options to suit my workflow. I'll be honest, your video has left me with more questions than answers, as before I watched this I was leaning towards the DLZ and thought the Model 12 wouldn't be much better than the L-8. I don't think either is a "bad" choice, but it's been very difficult to make the decision on which to prioritize - the hands on control and feel of the Model 12, or the ease of use and advanced podcast features on the DLZ Creator.

If any of them multitracked to the DAW and let you control the DAW at the same time I’d be interested. I accomplish this with a 8 channel interface and a Akai Midimix. The Midimix looks cheap as hell, but is actually pretty solid. Knobs and sliders have nice resistance and connectivity is seamless. I had the Model 16 once and it was disappointing to me so I returned it and got my current setup for this kind of workflow. I will say the model 16 looked great and sounded good to me. It was sad to me that it didn’t meet my needs.

oops.. didn't mean to write so much.. I guess I needed to vent more than I thought. very catharctic though so I'm going to post it anyway..lmao!
I have the zoom l12.. had it for a few years now. it's got a full feature set.. I do have some issues with how they implement the channel strip as part of the playback/monitor path only without any option to include those EQ and effect settings to the multitrack recording.
it's plastic build is a bonus for my needs. to be honest, I needed a multitrack mixer and recorder for portability. it's plastic, but it's also very light. I put it in a oversized laptop bag that I have for my old Alienware gaming laptop. it fits almost perfectly.. it's an over the shoulder bag, but has ample cushioning to protect it from bumps and falls.. the build is plastic, yeah but strong. no damage, no snapped faders or encoders.. surprisingly tough. don't let the plastic fool you. its very robust.
the quality of the recordings are great.. but the internal disk cache is horrendous. if you've ever tried copying a recording that you made on an SD card to a USB drive , then you know what I mean. just takes so long to transfer a couple tracks from SD to USB that I honestly can't see the logic in Zoom even suggesting that as a 'feature'... it's actually embarrassing how slow it is..
all in all, for that price, it really does everything that I needed from it.. and I like that the ridiculous amount of monitor sends for IEMs can be macgyvered to work as aux sends.
Really wished they included at least 1 insert points tho. ... aux sends just don't work the same as inserts..
BUT ZOOM CAN GO TO HELL. don't get me wrong. I like the product but I have to sell mine. I need to find something that was designed by people that have half of a brain.
I'm colour blind. that is not some obscure condition that no one knows about.. not at this day and age. not since the 1970s. FFS, I can't even explain why zoom would have chosen the shade of green that they use for their metering. and the thing that really gets me is that they have a "signal" led indicator... it flashes when there is signal coming through the channel. it flashes green. it took about 3 months of use of that thing for someone to point out that every once in awhile it flashes red... obviously red means clip or approaching clipping... I'm red green color blind. so is 75% of other color blind people.. the fact that I guess no engineers or employees in Japan have ever heard of color blindness that they would use the specific red and green in this mixer that basically looks identical. .. or the fact that they just put that red warning light on the exact same LED that shows the signal is a failure in basic UI design.
for 3 months, I didn't even know that clip indicator existed.. even if I read about it, I wouldn't have been able to see it easily. it would always look like the signal was fine.. only when I had an assistant at this one gig, that he pointed it out to me.
thankfully, I used my audio engineering education and common sense when using the mixer so I'm pretty confident that I had never ever clipped and my recordings all came out great.. but now as I use this God forsaken excuse for a mixer I am constantly staring at this one indicator trying to figure out if it's flashing red or not.. it's just a paranoia thing..
the tascam was something I was about to pull the trigger on as a replacement.. but then I have to pull the brakes because I couldn't find balance outs. BALANCED OUTPUTS. FFS.. how the hell do they not have a pair of balanced main outputs.
RCA outputs, sure...Tascam is basically telling us that this product was designed for a small tiny basement, setup right next to a home hifi stereo, or powered PA speaker. Jeeez.
for a company with such a rich history of pro audio and decades of experience from their legendary vintage studio consoles they used to make to their more recent live sound mixers, to not have a pair of XLR main outputs seems like a purposeful kick in the nuts and a cheap tactic to entice consumers to level up.
I never like mackie. I had their DFX6 mixer in the late 90s. I'll never forgive them for that POS. although they came out with their CFX lineup a few years later, and had apparently addressed all of the deficiencies from the DFX line, I can't easily forgive them for the years of anguish and despair they caused. It was the first real "pro audio" gear I bought as a teenager... They screwed me with that junk. I still have it tho... noisy pots, scratchy faders and all!... every once in awhile it needs a nice smack, kick or punch for the inserts to engage and allow the signal flow through the main channel strip. I'm sure they've improved, but still, I won't buy Mackie..
    THEY STEAL MONEY FROM TEENAGERS!!

If you're looking for yet another level of sound quality beyond the Mackie/Tascam stuff, try out the SSL Big Six. I had a Model 12 and liked it, and a ton of synths daisy chained through a bunch of Mackie mixers. When I added the Big Six, I noticed a SIGNIFICANT step up in sound quality. I've been using the L-8 for live shows with my 3 piece acoustic for the last year, and though in many ways it is fantastic, exactly like you said, it just falls a little shy on quality and reliability, and unfortunately, that just won't do. About 80% of the time I run sound through it, it's wonderful, but 20% of the time something seems off, static, noise floor, a fader simply not responding unless I flip the mixer on and off ... and so I need to get something a little more high-end. I mostly want to have a reliable, good sounding mixer for live shows with 4 vocal mics, 3 acoustic line in, and plus a couple extra lines to run some gear or whatnot. I am leaning towards the Onyx12. I considered the Tascam, but after the Zoom I'm feeling weary of digital and am drawn to analog for the mixer. Whattya think, man, am I making the right call?

  • @joelpoitras6226

Well i own a Model 12 for 3 months now and cannot recommend it. It's very buggy as an interface that i just quit that game and setup my 204HD behringer interface back again with my PC. So now i only use the Model 12 as a standalone unit. Even then, i'm having issues. I get no input signals and the unit is dead quiet. Then i power it off and on again, a loud boom cracks in the speakers and the inputs open up with the leds. I always have to power it off and on again to unfreeze it and get it to work, but now my power switch is starting to let go, it powers on once out of 3-4 times. The model 12 has been a nightmare and a regretful purchase exlerience. It's the most frustrating multitracker i have ever owned. Can't even assign an input to a track, you have to either unplug from the channel and plug into the other channel, or scroll the menu to swap/move the track after it's recorded. It's like they worked so hard to try to make this unit so complicated to do simple things for no reasons. There is always a long workaround for basic stuff that is so easy on other units. Also has small cheap 80s Casio calculator type mediocre screen.
I've seen bad reviews about it before purchasing. But i had convinced myself that it was those very few people troubleshooting on the internet and that the happy customers just never went online and carried on. So i took a chance on it and i did end up very disappointed.
I'm coming from 80s&90s Tascam tape multitrackers and in the 2000s i had and still do have the Zoom MRS1608 and Zoom R24 from 2010s which are far superior and alot easier to use. I thought i was upgrading for a vintage feel and a basic operational unit when i purchased the Model 12, but it has a steeper learning curve and long workarounds for basic operations. And as an interface, it's very buggy and if you have a loop sample in your PC stash that is at a different sample rate in the middle your project, it kicks off the model 12 off into a f mismatch screen and everything stops. You have to change the sample rate of projects all the time to accomodate your sound librairies.
I used to praise Tascam for equipment i once owned, but not anymore. As i mentionned, i owned Tascam tape multitrackers in the past and i currently own 3 Zoom multitrackers + PC Studio One 6 DAW.
So i'm not new to this technology and workflows, just to clarify.
The only positive aspect of the Model 12 is the vintage look.

Error: Specified configuration may not be supported by the device. Code: -22
I've tried unpluging, restarting the MPC, then plugging it in and no go. I was just starting to figure this thing out. Back to the drawing board. What I really want is a mixer that I can run to the MPC and to a computer but unless the mixer has 2 USB outs that is going to be a bit heady for me to figure out if a simply USB Y cable doesn't work.

Similar device and hardware compatibility issues happen with DJ and performancd hardware that purposefully try to restrict the user from using connecting to certain software like Rekordbox, serato and Ableton .. there's a whole 3rd party developer community that puts out fixes to restore MIDI communication from device to device...

There is a huge misconception about the Model 12 not being analog. The analog to digital conversion takes place beneath the inputs meaning inputs 1-10 are all analog. You can even change where you want the conversion to take place before or after the compression also before or after the EQ's. That's why the Model 12 sounds good because the preamps and inputs are analog.

    • @digitaldiezel5870
      @digitaldiezel5870 Рік тому

But the eq and the compression is digital. I think that’s the point some people try to make. The digital conversion takes place prior to the sound processing. Not a bad thing, great product, just preference for some.

The point of connection to usb can be moved to two different points so if you don’t output through that point it doesn’t convert to digital just make sure you set the point of conversion appropriately. One thing I will point out as distinction between the Mackie Onyx and the Tascam is that the Tascam only has +50 db of clean gain whereas the Mackie Onyx has +60 db, so if you have a gain heavy microphone like the Shure SM7B you will need a cloud lifter for the Tascam but won't necessarily need one for the Mackie which ultimately is why I'm upgrading from the Tascam Model 16 to the Mackie Onyx 24.

I have the Model 12 and it's great for what it is. A portable mixer/recorder. But the lack of INSERTS on every channel and having channels 7/8 on the same fader was a major oversight. I have no doubt the ProFX 16 sounds great, but I think it's worth mentioning that the ProFX series doesn't have onboard storage and only offers 4 outs over USB. All Tascam Model and Mackie Onyx series mixers allow you to do true multitrack recording onto an SD card or into a DAW directly. I went with the Model 12 because I really needed to be able to multitrack in my home studio. I find myself using the stereo inputs (7/8 and 9/10) for stuff I want to record in stereo anyway, like synths, instruments with stereo fx pedal chains, turntables, and drums (I can pan and level drums pre-fader on my MPC), so the combo faders haven't been an issue for me, personally. All depends on what you need!

The SSL is priced at Peter Gabriel's idea of what 'affordable' is .. a little too overpriced in my opinion..Its the SSL name, reputation..I know I know. I studied on their AWS 948 console in school .. just can't justify the Peter Gabriel premium price point . not yet at least 😉
The Yamaha DM3 is the one I'd suggest. actually I think Tascam came out with a compact digital mixer recently too. Not sure the price on that one, but if it's comparable to the DM3, it might be a viable option. I remember Mitch Gallagher doing a walkthrough video a while back. Seemed pretty dope. But also probably pretty pricey.
The Yamaha is a pretty damn good desk. And the price (with or without Dante) is very reasonable.
