    I use the Model 12 with my Macbook and Ableton. You can move the general output to the stereo channels (I use 9/10) in Mac's Audio Midi Setup -> Configure Speakers. Then in Ableton, just set the Master to output on 9/10 as well. This frees up channel 1 and 2 to use for inputs.

    I absolutely love my model 12. Sometimes I wish I'd have gone for the 16 channel or even the 24. I purchased it after the MPC firmware update allowing interfaces and it's just been fantastic. I use it heavily between my instruments, MPC and my primary brain of the system - an RC505 (now MK2). Appreciate all the high quality content y'all have put out on all this hardware.

      I upgraded to the 16 but went back to the 12. The 16 was a bit noisier and the XLR on 2 cut out. I also prefer the sound of the 12 which may b the all digital path. Overall, the 16 felt cheaper so back to the shop it went.

    Awesome! I got a digitakt / ableton / synth / modular kind of setup (starting to grow) and my soundcard quickly started getting limited (in multiple senses). Seems like a mixer like that, maybe even the model 16, would be ideal. Great review, thank you!

    I recorded the basic tracks of Blue Leech, a Neutral Earth song, off our cd- Current Volts &Ohms (which is available for listening on UA-cam). I basically use my model 24 as a mixer, recording into my Tascam DP32. I’ve never tried recording a live setting with it, but given I’ve done that with other equipment, I think this would work quite nicely.

    Just picked this Model 12 up and I love it! I use with a patchbay to route a few pieces of outboard gear.
    You have to understand routing with different gear and your DAW routing to appreciate this mixer/interface.
    It opens up a lot of flexibility for routing IMO
    And the I/O interfacing is straightforward.
    It’s not UAD quality but if you are using outboard gear 🤷🏽‍♂️ it’s does the “Do”

      One more thing; I found in Ableton (or possibly any DAW) you can change the Master channel output from 1/2 to 9/10 or 7/8 and open 1/2 channels on the Model 12 in PC mode to be free on 1/2 👍🏽Sidenote: PC WINDOWS AUDIO will always be on channels 1/2 by default but Voicemeeter Banana has a work around to have PC audio to be on 7/8 or 9/10

    I bought one for the same reason -- MPC compatibility -- and it is superb. Then I tried the Soundcraft Signature 12 MTK. Same "interface" for the MPC but without the SD recorder. I ended up returning the Tascam and keeping the Soundcraft. To my ears, it sounded more transparent and I like the weird Saphire EQ. Both mixers are great additions to a small studio running an MPC along with a DAW.

    I bought one of these in April 2021. I now mix and record all my gigs with it. The only connection between this and a DAW is when I load tracks from the M12's SD card onto my computer and then open them in Logic for final EQing. The DAW becomes a mastering tool, which the M12 was not intended to be. I believe strongly in getting the sound and performance right, wherever you record to. Think of the great recordings that were done on machines that had nowhere near this capability. Musicians and technicians got it right, in the studio.

      Are you able to export each channel individually to a DAW to mix? I’m want a mixer that can record a live performance then export each individual channels’ recording to mix in a DAW, not just a stereo file of the entire mix.

    I'm guessing the best workflow is using it as an audio interface into the daw to multi track record. Any tips, suggestions would be amazing before I dropped the money on the 12.

    HI, thankyou for the videos they are great! and so is the music you make!! I am wanting to go to the 16 or 24, but my main hesitation is that neither of those seem to have a midi input. This will be my main interface with a 15-inch dell xps, so not many other inputs on the computer side. Do you think the lack of midi on the larger boards will be an issue or is there a better workaround that I am not aware of? I have also been eyeing the new Yamaha dm3, but my needs are more recording and studio than live. I just like the option of doing both. Thanks, it's a lot just wanted whatever guidance you had.

    I have the MPC Live and the Model 12 and when the MPC firmware gave us access to external interfaces, my mind was blown (your vids have been quite helpful in tackling that integration). As far as upgrading to a Model 16/24, I want to put it out there that the Behringer X32 rack and a X-Control make a formidable semi-compact combo that can handle outboard and DAW duties. I racked up mine with the X-control on a sliding rack shelf, into a 6sp rack, and have all my synths and some outboard gear all connected. You can couple that with the optional SD multitrack recorder card, and you have a sick "all-in-one"...and there are LOADS of effects. If you are patient, you can pick up an X32 Rack for less than a grand (I bought two for work, refurbed by Behringer, for $750 each). The X-Control isn't cheap, but jeeze! Flying faders and crazy DAW control. The X32 will also give you the max inputs on your MPC. Sooooo...just throwing that out there. Thanks for your vids. Very helpful.

    • @TheLordcasio
      @TheLordcasio 2 роки тому +1

      @@michaels5166 The Focusrite Rednet stuff is pretty popular in studio and broadcast, but it ain’t cheap…actually most DANTE enabled devices are pretty expensive. Audinate (the company that created the DANTE protocol) keeps a rather extensive list of DANTE enabled gear on their website. Keep in mind, you need to buy the DANTE software (pretty cheap) but you do not need a specialty PCIe card for the ethernet.
      AVB and MADI are also good protocols. AVB is the newest and most accessible in audio interfaces. There are trade offs, but for music recording, I don’t think AVB has a downside.
      The great advantage to any of the three (DANTE, MADI or AVB) is running multiple interfaces in multiple locations, over one cable. Got drums in the basement, vocal set up in the bathroom, guitar amps in the garage and a control room in your bedroom? Then this could be good.
      If its just you in a room, it might be overkill.

    I’m thinking of getting the Model 12 to record rehearsals and gigs. Kind of inspired after watching the Beatles documentary to get a bit more done live.
    There’s also the Zoom LiveTrak L12 which could achieve the same thing. Has anybody compared the 2 units? My perception is that the Tascam will sound a bit better, but not sure if that is true. The Tascam does look better for live use having physical knobs for E.Q. rather than in a menu.

    Tascam recently sent a software fix so you can now move your main outputs to either channels 9/10 or to the main. If you use the main you have headphone issues so I’d suggest using 9/10. Also using this mixer with your Daw you’ll see right off the bat that whether it’s digital for the most part if not it sounds great. Especially when you combine it with outboard gear. Nice video !

    ★★★★★ Awesome overview. Can’t wait to receive my Model 24 to pair with my Maschine+ for everything you mentioned there, and then for use as a 22 channel analog EQ / Summing board for mixing through from Logic during the mix phase. That ability alone is worth the price upgrade from the Model 12, for me. Well, that and the extra 12 channels, obviously. 🤓
    Once I have my Model 24 I’ll make a video on my channel about using it with the Maschine+ and I’ll mention your initial MPC + Model 12 video (and put a link to it) in my video as it was the root of my inspiration in going in that direction.

    The video is a year old, so this is a bit late, but if you are using the Model 12 as an interface, you can do a post-FX send from the main bus (in Reaper it’s a “hardware send”, I don’t know about other DAWs) to channels 9/10 and then you can use channels 1 and 2, as well as the inserts on those channels. (Maybe someone already said that.)

    The inability to record effects to the card is criminal. This could well be a all in the box unit with a few modifications and they wouldn't cost Tascam a lot to do it.
    I'm a big fan of their stuff, and even have a Tascam DP24SD, but the Model 24 has been attracting me for quite awhile.
    But I would like to be able to do everything right in the mixer and card, if I need to take a break away from DAW recording.
    Yes, you can feed an external processor into empty tracks, but that kind of loses the idea of all in one box mixing/recording.
    Thanks for taking time to do an honest, hands on review.

    I just started using mine for the first time this past weekend... I love it. Took me some trial and error before I figured out all the little button and sliders, and how they all work in unison. I used to use an old drive-based Tascam DP-01. I am realizing, however, that since it's an SD card, I can't cut/copy-paste sections of my tracks like I could on the DP-01. Anyone have any info on that? I don't see anything about cutting/copying-pasting data within tracks in the user manual. :(

      @@TeftyMeems Yeah, the Zoom can be an audio interface but not a control surface, from what I've gleaned.
      I think I'm in the "want a recording set up in a different part of my studio" category. My jam space is in my basement but my production PC (also my day job machine) is in my home office where I do all my in-the-box work and simple recording, but I can't turn into a full-blown studio.
      I'm leaning toward getting a Model 12 because it's small enough I can record to it in the basement, where I can have all my gear (especially synths) set up all the time, and either just bring up the SD card or the whole thing to act as a control surface when I'm mixing and doing heavier production; that workflow sounds appealing to me by forcing me to not overly focus on production details in the DAW when I'm getting recordings down.

If I then wanted to fly an edited work mix (WAV File) back to the 12 as a guide for for additional tracking does the unit allow that kind of back and forth between the unit and PC? Thank you!

    I’m looking at the model 12 for live rehearsal and band recording, despite my studio setup which is UA Apollo x4 and UA plugins (channel strips, compressors, eq, reverbs, delays, auto-tune, etc.). I have a MOTU 8 pre connected via ADAT giving me 12 inputs in total. I can use the Apollo x4 + 8 Pre for live, but in all cases I’m relying on my M1 MacBook, UA Console and Logic. I’ve used this for live rehearsals and band recording in my studio, but it’s not really a mobile solution. So, I’m struggling with “what do I get with the Model 12?”

    Have you had any of the issues with pops and clicks on recording into the MPC when using the Model 12 as the MPC’s audio interface? There’s been a lot of chatter in the MPC community about these issues with certain audio interfaces.

      Personally I have not had those issues, but I do watch the levels like a hawk and as soon as it's going into the red on the MPC I notice it immediately. Clicks and pops from an audio interface POV is usually a buffer/frequency problem. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some bugs lurking. I do wish Akai was faster at fixing issues 😞

    Hello sir
    I am extremely new to this. Last one I had and still have the Porta 4 cassette. I want get back into.
    I'm desperately trying to decide between the model 12 or 32. Midi may or may not be important to me. Like u suggested I found midi dp24 and was ready to pull the trigger on, but thinking that only 8 simultaneous recording and I just don't think will work. Also tacam will not support version 1 anymore.
    I do want to get into Floyd style old school synths but with 1/4 I can record w/o issue. And it appears that the 12 midi is pretty limited. Tho, midi could be helpful for backing tracks live.
    Thoughts? I like the 12 but after stereo there is no tracks left. And if the midi is not needed then will go more simultaneous.

    Very helpful. I have been considering a small mixer for my setup and have gone througha few. I am using now a compact keyboard mixer, the Radial Keylargo which sounds good but I can not record the individual inputs. It would be nice to capture individual stems for mixing later. The question for me is whether with the gigs I am doing I want to put the trouble to capture each channel or simply record the stereo mix on a Zoom H6 which I do now. I love your content and channel. Peace.

    • @TeftyMeems
      @TeftyMeems  2 роки тому +1

      Hi John! I'd say it comes down to your needs. Do you find yourself wishing you had the multitrack to mix later? If not, then you're better off just capturing the performance from your H6. If you perform a lot, then mixing all those performances afterwards could get time consuming as well. But like said, all depends on your needs. Thanks for watching 🙏

    If I have multiple instruments can, how many can use stereo configuration at one time? I mainly use my daw to record in audio and piece things together from there, so it won't be a live performance, but I want to avoid unplugging cables all day. Currently I use a Steinberg Audio Interface and this seems like an affordable option to replace my audio interface and use it as a mixer. I don't mind switching cables here or there, but I want to avoid it for the most part.

    I did not initially want the Model 12 for DAW control, but after testing it out it took a permanent spot on my desk. Unfortunately, I had to take an audio interface(24-bit/192Khz capable with much better pre-amps) and MPC Live 2 off the desk to make room. There's probably very few options that can do what this thing does at this price-point.

    • @TeftyMeems

    • @GrayGhostDog1
      @GrayGhostDog1 2 роки тому +2

      @@TeftyMeems Well... now I am using it as a DAW controller + audio interface. I have a mic in 1, keeping 2 & 3 open for guitar/Headrush MX5, Peak in 7/8 and Take 5 in 9/10. That leaves channels 5 & 6 open for mono-synths or a poly-synth, if needed. I use the faders to manipulate my levels in Ableton... I prefer drawing in my automations rather than using faders/pans, anyway, so I'm not missing motorized faders or recall. It's not perfect, but what out there is? The pre-amps are okay... barely capable of pushing an SM7B, but I don't use that mic. Yes, I initially acquired the Model 12 for a DAW-less setup w/ MPC Live 2, but I'm impressed that the Tascam can do all of this at this price-point. Seems like the drivers are decently written.
      I have a Focusrite Clarett + 2Pre available, but it's been doing duties with my laptop.

    I've been experiencing some wonkiness with swapping tracks. I might try to swap track 1 with track 6 but when I listen back, it either didn't swap or another track got involved somehow. Also, if you want to mixdown 4 tracks to a stereo frack, all the tracks that have recording on them will automatically be included in the mixdown. Even if you bring the faders down, it doesn't matter. I've had the Model 12 for a year and I still do not fully understand it.
